Gina McCarthy’s Fracking History at Odds With New Climate Position

WASHINGTON – News reports indicate that the Biden team has selected Gina McCarthy for a new senior position to coordinate domestic climate policy.

In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter released the following statement:

“Gina McCarthy played a key role in implementing the Obama administration’s fossil fuel friendly ‘all of the above’ energy policy. In real terms, that meant massively expanding the dangerous form of drilling known as fracking, and suppressing vital investigations into fracking’s impact on clean water. Under her tenure as EPA administrator, the agency released a scandalous study that whitewashed fracking’s impact on drinking water, and McCarthy even refused to meet with members of the communities whose neighborhoods had been turned into fracking sacrifice zones.

“Years later, there is a staggering amount of evidence about the risks that fracking and drilling waste pose to human health, our air and water, and to the climate. The science is clear. Gina McCarthy owes it to the communities being harmed by fracking to redeem herself in this new role, and to push for policies that move the country off fossil fuels.”
