Kate Myers named interim COO of Center for Public Integrity

Veteran nonprofit journalism executive Kate Myers has been named interim chief operating officer of the Center for Public Integrity.

Myers, who served most recently as executive director of revenue and operations of First Look Media Works, the parent organization of The Intercept, will lead Public Integrity’s business operations while the nonprofit investigative news organization completes its ongoing search for a new chief executive officer.

At First Look, Myers led revenue strategy and business operations for The Intercept, Field of Vision and the Press Freedom Defense Fund. Myers spent a number of years at National Public Radio in roles that included digital product work, business development, audience development and corporate strategy. She also served as vice president for business development at Inside Higher Ed. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and has an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

“The Center for Public Integrity plays such a central and important role in the investigative journalism industry,” Myers said. “This is a critical moment of transition for CPI, and I’m honored to be here to ensure the work continues and can grow.”

Myers, overseeing business operations, and Public Integrity Editor in Chief Matt DeRienzo, overseeing the organization’s newsroom, will report jointly to the board of directors while the search for a new CEO takes place.

“The Board is delighted to welcome Kate to Public Integrity to serve such a critical role during the transition to our new CEO,” said James Kiernan, chairman of the Public Integrity board of directors. “She combines excellent non-profit operating skills, very successful fundraising experience and a deep knowledge of and passion for non-profit journalism.  We are very fortunate to have Kate and Matt to lead us through this transition.”

Former Public Integrity CEO Susan Smith Richardson announced earlier this year that she would leave to take a new role this spring as deputy editor in chief of The Guardian U.S.

Public Integrity is a leading nonprofit investigative news organization founded over 30 years ago. It is building on its historic mission to protect democracy and inspire change by exposing abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust through investigative reporting with a focus on inequality.
