Ray Torres has loved basketball since he was a kid, even using his favourite ball as a pillow. He was born with learning disabilities and growing up was tough, but he felt at home on the basketball court. So when his home nation of Spain started an intellectual impairment (II) basketball team, he was thrilled to make the cut, and it was a dream come true when he was asked to captain his country at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia. The tournament couldn’t have gone better – they beat all-comers, landing gold with victory over Russia in the final. But back home, stories in the press were raising questions about some of Ray’s teammates.
