University of Iowa’s Official Warning From the USDA: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding the University of Iowa’s Official Warning from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its violations of federal animal welfare regulations:

The University of Iowa rakes in millions of taxpayer dollars for experiments on animals but can’t manage to abide by minimal animal welfare regulations. A just-released federal report obtained by PETA reveals that the school has received an Official Warning from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act discovered in October. The university’s obscene neglect resulted in the deaths of baby ferrets—including one who sustained a bone fracture after her leg became caught in a cage and four who died after their mother was held in an inappropriate enclosure. The warning won’t undo the trauma and agony endured by the ferrets, but it shows that the University of Iowa should get out of the dirty animal experimentation business and redirect its resources toward modern, non-animal research methodology that will actually help humans, and we urge officials there to adopt PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.
