‘Dead Calf’ at Starbucks? PETA to Challenge Vegan Upcharge

Following reports that Starbucks will drop its nondairy milk surcharge in the U.K. but will continue to charge extra in the U.S., PETA will cause a ruckus outside the chain’s Old Naples location on Thursday with a lifelike calf stuffed into a Starbucks cup to remind would-be customers that calves are torn away from their mothers soon after birth so that humans can drink their milk. PETA is calling on the company to drop the surcharge everywhere, as Starbucks already admits that vegan milk is better for the planet than cow’s milk, the chain’s biggest source of greenhouse-gas emissions.

When:    Thursday, January 13, 12 noon

Where:    Starbucks, 796 Fifth Ave. S., #101, Naples

“Starbucks’ vegan milk upcharge leaves a bad taste in the mouths of customers who care about animals or the environment,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Starbucks to drop the surcharge in the U.S. next, because dairy is cruel to cows and fuels the climate catastrophe.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
