Caged PETA ‘Monkeys’ to Rattle UMass Graduation Ceremony

To protest the University of Massachusetts–Amherst’s (UMass) shameful and invasive “menopause” experiments on marmosets, a group of resolute PETA supporters will cage themselves—along with realistic-looking stuffed monkeys—right outside the school’s graduation ceremony on Friday.

When:    Friday, May 13, 3 p.m.

Where:    20 Stadium Dr., Amherst

Purportedly to study menopause, UMass experimenter Agnès Lacreuse cuts into and screws electrodes onto monkeys’ skulls, cuts into their necks, deprives them of water, restrains them for hours at a time, and torments them in various other ways—even though marmosets don’t even experience menopause. To simulate the condition, Lacreuse surgically removes their ovaries and then uses hand warmers on their bodies to mimic hot flashes.

“As UMass graduates plan for their futures, marmosets will remain trapped and tormented in the school’s labs,” says PETA neuroscientist Dr. Katherine Roe. “The class of 2022 will surely agree with PETA: Monkeys don’t deserve to have their bodies violated for worthless studies.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
