According to the national media, a look at gun violence in New York City shows a concerning pattern when it comes to kids. An NYPD assistant commissioner is sounding off about what he says is the cause of a disturbing pattern of rising gun violence among teenagers.

According to the reports, 64 minors were shot across the city in 2019. In 2020, the number nearly doubled to 125, then increased again in 2021 and 2022. There have been 149 shooting victims under 18 this year, as of Dec. 18, according to Police Department data. That’s notably higher than the number in 2021 when 138 children were shot. In 2017, when gun violence hit historic lows, 75 shooting victims were children.

According to the police department, this year about one in every 10 New Yorkers struck by a bullet was a child, and at least 16 died.

The annual number of people under 18 shot across the city has more than doubled since 2019, and the number of kids committing shootings is also on the rise.

According to the data provided by the Police Department, 105 people under 18 were charged in shootings through the end of September, compared with 102 in all of 2021

Experts say that the pandemic’s upheaval in school and home lives, the proliferation of guns, and the economic devastation of low-income communities over the past three years are some of the main reasons for the increase in gun violence among teenagers.
