‘Survival at Stake’ Prescribes Respecting Animals to Fend Off Human Extinction

Survival at Stake: How Our Treatment of Animals Is Key to Human Existence is a new book by PETA U.K. Senior Vice President of International Affairs Poorva Joshipura that explores how major crises affecting us right now—including pandemics, antibiotic resistance, the climate catastrophe, and polluted air, water, and soil—are inextricably linked to our treatment of animals. With a foreword by United Nations Secretary-General Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals Dia Mirza, the book—which will be released by HarperCollins on December 23—provides readers with a roadmap for changing these destructive patterns.

Joshipura warns about bird flu and swine flu threats in the U.S. and around the world, shows how antibiotic resistance stems from factory farming and how SARS and COVID-19 likely originated in wildlife markets in Asia, stresses the public health risks that animal experimentation poses, and highlights how the climate catastrophe, pollution, and species extinction are linked to meat, egg, dairy, and leather production. Survival at Stake is essential reading for anyone who cares about other species—or the fate of our own.

“Poorva Joshipura’s wise words show that when we treat other animals with respect, dignity, and compassion, it’s a win-win for all,” says Marc Bekoff, Ph.D., author and professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado–Boulder. “Survival at Stake is a must-read for a global audience, and animals around the world will thank us for doing so.”

Hard copies of the book and interviews with the author are available upon request.

Joshipura is also the author of For a Moment of Taste: How What You Eat Impacts Animals, the Planet and Your Health, published in 2020. She has spent over two decades with PETA entities, during which time she has conducted eyewitness investigations into laboratories, slaughterhouses, and other facilities. Victories under her leadership include convincing regulatory agencies to end specific animal tests; overseeing investigations into the use of animals for food; urging major fashion retailers to stop selling items containing down, angora, and fur; and rescuing animals from abusive circuses.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, or Instagram.
