I’m writing this letter sitting in a van set up for car camping in the Pacific Northwest. This little trip reminds me of my early days at CounterPunch when Alexander Cockburn was still taking trips all over the states in his boat-like 1960s cars, often on his way to speak at events around the country, or heading up for a meeting of the minds with Jeffrey St. Clair, our long-time editor and co-editor with Alexander. Alex drove like a maniac and when the engine was hot, slapped a steak on it to cook while typing out his latest piece with his index fingers pounding his portable typewriter before rushing it to the nearest fax machine to send it to me to enter in the computer and disperse via pre-email methods. He worked on the six-page newsletter this way until CounterPunch bought our first iMac and we were officially in the digital age. We’ve come a long way since then!
CounterPunch has certainly made upgrades and done our best to keep up with the rapidly and endlessly outmoded methods of distributing articles to our readers. But there is one thing we have seen all three decades–a steady increase in CounterPunch readership. There are more of you than ever: at the moment I’m writing, 54,000 of you are reading CounterPunch articles! 60% of you are in the U.S. and the rest of you can be found on nearly every continent around the globe! As our community of readers rely on us, we rely on all of you for your ongoing support to keep CounterPunch going! We’re in this together! So we’re asking you once again to chip in what you can.
The 30th Anniversary: a milestone that serves as a testament to the resilience of CounterPunch and the dedication of our readers. Three decades of support evince CounterPunch is still punching: dedicated to providing fearless journalism and thought-provoking commentary. Together, the international CounterPunch community of writers, readers, supporters, board members, and staff have navigated the difficult waters of staying afloat through the transitions, challenges, and growing pains. Now, all of our voices are more critical than ever, so support from our readers is even more essential.
CounterPunch dedicates itself to remaining fiercely independent and guided by a commitment to social justice and civil liberties, which we’ve done unwaveringly for three decades. We cannot do it alone. We are 100% reader supported and we continue amplifying critical voices that are continually marginalized, invalidated, and ignored. By uniting our commitment to truth and transparency, we become stronger, more diverse, and able to expand in ways that we would have never dreamed at the inception of the first six-page photo-copied newsletter in December 1993. Please join in this crucial effort by donating today what you can. Together, we touch more lives, raise more voices, and build a foundation for a future where truth, justice, and liberty are not just ideals but realities.
This is true grassroots fundraising. Even the cost of a cup of coffee is an appreciated donation. The average donation is $25! Your support has a profound impact that will reverberate well into the future. If non-cash donations are a possibility, please contact our business office for information on Donor Advised Funds, stock transfers, Qualified charitable distributions, cryptocurrency and more.
By supporting CounterPunch, you are joining a movement of individuals passionately committed to creating a world where the power of journalism is used to inform, mobilize, and empower.
Onward!
