Disney-owned US broadcaster ABC has reinstated Jimmy Kimmel to his Jimmy Kimmel Live! show from tomorrow, after suspending him indefinitely because US president Donald Trump and other ‘MAGA’ figures had taken exception to Kimmel’s comments about Trump’s reaction to the murder of far-right podcaster Charlie Kirk. Kimmel had mocked Trump’s pivot to talking about construction at the White House when asked about his feelings about the murder – and Trump reportedly told regulator the FCC to punish ABC if it did not remove Kimmel.
But a mass public reaction against ABC and owners Disney threatened to wipe almost US$4bn off Disney’s profits, leading to ABC’s announcement and its claim that it had changed its position after ‘thoughtful conversations with Jimmy’.
The suspension had led to mickey-takes from other presenters like Jon Stewart, who introduced his own show with a satirical, North Korea-like segment praising the infallible wisdom of the great leader, who ‘only’ wanted the
respect and deference that any sun-god would command.
