The election of Zohran Mamdani, member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), as mayor of New York City on November 4 was a kick in the teeth for United States President Donald Trump and his “Make America Great Again” movement, and a beacon of hope for socialists around the world.

Mamdani’s win was built on an exciting campaign in which more than 100,000 volunteers were mobilised to promote his platform, which included tackling the cost-of-living crisis by freezing rents, implementing free buses and publicly owned supermarkets.

Winnie Marion, a DSA member based in NYC, joined the Green Left Show to discuss the campaign and next steps for the socialist movement.

Marion is speaking (via zoom) at a public forum, organised by the Socialist Alliance on November 22.
