A second Labour MP has called for Starmer to step down

Earlier this month, Labour MP Clive Lewis called for Keir Starmer to step down as PM. Now, a second Labour MP has joined him:

When asked if Labour needs new leadership, Whittome responded:

Yeah, I do.

Whittome isn’t alone in this, with vast swathes of the public now willing to vote purely to oppose Starmer’s Labour:


Whittome continued:

For a long time I said that we need a complete change in direction in the party and that doesn’t necessarily have to mean a new leader as long as the current leader learns lessons. I think it’s clear that we’re way beyond that point now. I think there does have to be a new leader.

I mean, even if Keir Starmer had a radical change of direction, I don’t think people would believe him

Once again, Whittome is in line with public sentiment:

Starmer dug this grave for himself, of course, by constantly going back on his word. A liar cannot rebrand as a truth teller, and once a person realises he’s the former, they’re done with him:

Back to Whittome, she added that even if Starmer did want to change:

I don’t think the people around him would allow that to happen, so I think there needs to be a change of leadership… and a completely different direction for the party — that taxes extreme wealth, reduces the obscene wealth inequality that we’re seeing just balloon in this country, tackles poverty, funds our public services, while at the same time standing firmly against racist politics of divide and rule, and the scapegoating that Reform and the Tories rely on.

Good for something

For a long time, Keir Starmer did a good job of neutering much of the Labour left. This was obvious in the poor showing for votes like the following:


At the time, fans of Lewis and Whittome would possibly have said these politicians were keeping their powder dry. Those people may have been right, as it’s Lewis and Whittome who are now leading the charge to get rid of Starmer. MPs like John McDonnell and Diane Abbott, meanwhile, are just kind of hanging around in the Labour Party while their pal Jeremy Corbyn sets up Your Party.

In summary, left-wing Labour MPs will disappoint you more often than not, but every so often they will make moves, and sometimes those moves will be pretty good.

We don’t think the PM will step down purely on the objections of Lewis and Whittome, but fair play to them for getting the ball rolling on what’s looking like Starmer’s end game.
