The Green Party hits 170,000 members — and still climbing

The Green Party is celebrating another milestone, with their party membership hitting 170,000 members. As leader Zack Polanski said, this means over 100,000 people have joined the party since he became leader:

Green Party is still growing…

On 28 October, we reported that the Green Party had hit 150,000 members. It’s taken nearly a month for them to hit 170,000 members, which means two things:

  • The pace at which they’re taking on new members has admittedly slowed.
  • They’re still welcoming members at a pace which the other parties can only dream of.

When it comes to members, we know that Labour are actually experiencing the opposite of what the Greens are. This is exemplified by all the former members who react to every Green announcement:

The Green Party is also doing what the establishment would tell you is impossible, and that’s motivating young voters:

It’s important to remember that membership isn’t just an indicator of support; it’s a sign that membership fees are flowing into the party and that door knockers are joining the ground operation. This gives the Greens the power to organise campaigns and reach voters, which in turn gives them the power to win elections, which in turn makes them more attractive to new members.

In other words, it’s an exciting time to be a Green:

Your Party

It isn’t just the Green Party who’ve experienced sudden growth, of course, with Your Party standing at 50,000 members. While Your Party has certainly been rocked by controversies and misfires, it’s also obvious that the people who have signed up have done so because they want to fight for a socialist future:

We imagine that a lot of the new members probably aren’t on Twitter, and as such they’re not privy to the weekly pronouncements of Your Party’s demise (not to denounce those who are privy, of course, as we understand these people are only so invested because they care).

If there’s a will to succeed among Your Party’s tens of thousands of members, anyway, there’s no doubt there can be a way. And as Curtis Daly notes, whichever way you look at it, we’re certainly seeing that there’s a hunger for new politics among the British electorate:
