Plant-based companies have witnessed a spike in investment this year, despite declines for cultivated meat and fermentation. Here are the 10 largest future food funding rounds of 2025, featuring animal-free eggs, yeast proteins, and Beyond Meat.

1) Beyond Meat

Embattled plant-based giant Beyond Meat has reported declining sales, introduced products that don’t mimic meat, became a meme stock, and was forced to deny bankruptcy rumours. But it raised $100M in debt financing from Unprocessed Foods, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ahimsa Foundation (a non-profit advancing plant-based diets), to shore up its liquidity.

2) Nxtfood – €49M ($58M)

The French producer behind the Accro brand of meat alternatives secured €49M ($58M at the time) from existing backers Creadev and Roquette Ventures, and new investors Clay Capital and IRD Invest (Groupe IRD). It was Europe’s largest raise for plant-based meat since 2022, with the funds being used to triple its production capacity and expand into new markets in pursuit of profitability.

3) The Every Company – $55M

Solutions to the egg crisis were among the biggest future food themes of the year, and California’s The Every Company banked on that with a $55M Series D round led by McWin Capital Partners, through its McWin Food Tech Fund. It is using the money to expand production of its precision-fermented egg proteins, which are now featured in a product at all Walmart stores nationwide.

4) Formo – €35M ($35.8M)

German fermentation specialist Formo had secured the third-largest alternative protein investment in 2024, and it backed that up with another €35M ($35.8M at the time) in a quasi-equity venture debt loan from the European Investment Bank this year. The startup will use the funds to scale up manufacturing of its koji protein cheeses and secure regulatory clearance for its precision-fermented casein in the US and the EU.

5) Vivici – €32.5M ($33.7M)

Dutch precision fermentation startup Vivici closed a €32.5M ($33.7M at the time) funding round led by state fund Invest-NL and pension fund ABP. The firm said the capital would go towards scaling up its recombinant beta-lactoglobulin protein, expanding into new markets, and launching bovine lactoferrin under its Vivitein brand.

6) The Protein Brewery – €30M ($35M)

Another Netherlands-based fermentation player, The Protein Brewery, bagged €30M ($35M at the time) in Series B funding from Invest-NL, the Brabant Development Agency, Novo Holdings, Unovis Asset Management, and Madeli. It’s using the funds to launch its fungi-derived Fermotein ingredient, which is high in protein and fibre, having secured approval in the US and Singapore, and expecting it imminently in the EU and the UK.

7) Liberation Bioindustries – $31.5M

Shortly before rebranding from Liberation Labs, US biomanufacturing company Liberation Bioindustries brought in $31.5M from investors, including Saudi Arabia’s state-owned NEOM Investment Fund, with an aim to build commercial-scale precision fermentation factories in Richmond, US, and Saudi Arabia. This was on top of the $19M in raised in 2024 as part of a $75M convertible note round that the firm is looking to raise.

8) The Better Meat Co – $31M

With the goal of making its mycelium protein cheaper than commodity beef next year, California’s The Better Meat Co raised $31M in a round co-led by Future Ventures and Resilience Reserve. The startup, named one of Time Magazine’s best inventions of 2025, said the funds will help it scale to commercial-volume production of its Rhiza mycoprotein and expand the ingredient’s applications towards dairy alternatives, baked goods, and nutrition bars.

9) Aleph Farms – $29M

Pioneering cultivated meat firm Aleph Farms secured $21.5M from a SAFE conversion and another $7.5M in the first close of a new funding round, taking its total raised this year to $29M. The news came mere months after the company laid off 30% of its staff and filed for approval in Switzerlandthe UK, and Thailand. It’s now working on a second closing of the investment round, targeting a cumulative raise of $20-25M.
