JD Vance gives ICE ‘absolute immunity’ – and guess what happens next?

Following the murder of Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota, JD Vance said that agents of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have ‘absolute immunity’. Since then, border patrol agents have allegedly shot two people in Portland, in a sign that federal agents may now feel like they can act with impunity:

A report from the Portland police bureau explained:

Two people are in the hospital following a shooting involving federal agents.

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 2:18 p.m., Portland Police Officers responded to the 10200 block of Southeast Main Street on a report of a shooting. Officers confirmed that federal agents had been involved in a shooting. Portland Police were not involved in the incident.

At 2:24 p.m., officers received information that a man who had been shot was calling and requesting help in the area of Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. Officers responded and found a male and female with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers applied a tourniquet and summoned emergency medical personnel. The patients were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown. Officers have determined the two people were injured in the shooting involving federal agents.

While FBI Portland did post the story to X, they’ve since censored themselves:

The rampant rise of authoritarianism in the West has sparked fear for many on the left. We wrote in September how Trump has vowed to ‘take out’ opponents to fascism, with Skwawkbox reporting:

Defiant Oregon Congresswoman Janelle Bynum said ‘stop fucking with us’ on X, arguing that deploying these forces to American cities amounts to state-sponsored terrorism:

Deliberate fascist agenda

Bynum issued a stark warning to people in Portland, arguing that Trump is deliberately targeting Portland due to its history of exposing “how ridiculous” Republican policies are. She plead with local US citizens not to ‘take the bait’ which would then reward the government’s blatant provocations with a license to bring fascism to their communities.

As we reported, politicians like Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch have expressed an intention to bring ICE-style enforcement to the UK.
