Australians can expect more new policies to turbocharge the industries of the low-carbon future from an Albanese government gearing up for an election in less than a year.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hinted at the shape of Labor’s election platform at Sky News’ Economic Outlook event on Friday, with voters told to expect new policies that are “about the immediate but are also about the future”.
“The Future Made in Australia agenda is how we set ourselves up,” he said on Friday.
Tax breaks for hydrogen and critical minerals are at the centre of the plans, which are broadly intended to shore up priority industries important to the net-zero transition and the nation’s economic security and resilience
Mr Albanese said it was about working with the resources sector to keep exports humming along, as well as moving further up supply chains and adding value.
“Our plan for a future made in Australia seeks to bring new growth, new secure jobs and new opportunities to every part of our country,” he said.
The prime minister also said he was elected on a platform of “not leaving people behind”, with lifting Commonwealth rent assistance an example of this commitment in action.
“Looking into aspiration” was also highlighted, as well as continuing to repair international relationships.
The federal election must be held by May 24, 2025, and Mr Albanese has indicated he wants to serve a full term as leader.
The address followed a glum set of national accounts for the March quarter, with the quarterly growth pace a meagre 0.1 per cent.
Despite the weak economy, Mr Albanese said Australia was in a better spot than most other advanced economies.
“There are a number of countries that are in recession. We are not.”
