In 2023, FORUM-ASIA faced a year marked by significant challenges and upheavals across Asia. The region experienced a surge in authoritarianism, with governments increasingly deploying repressive laws to stifle dissent and undermine democratic processes. From violent crackdowns on peaceful protests to the suppression of media freedom and targeting of human rights defenders, the landscape for civil society and human rights advocacy became increasingly perilous.
Amid these struggles, however, 2023 also witnessed a remarkable convergence of activism across diverse communities. From labour rights to gender equality, and environmental justice to pro-democracy movements, changemakers united in their resilience and collaboration, demonstrating the power of collective action.
FORUM-ASIA is proud to present its 2023 Annual Report, titled “Stronger Together: The Coming Together of Changemakers in Asia” This report highlights the collaborative efforts of human rights defenders, grassroots and international movements, and civil society organisations throughout the year. It reflects a milestone in FORUM-ASIA’s journey, showcasing both challenges faced and solidarity that emerged in response. Featuring also in-depth profiles of human rights defenders (HRDs) told through art, stories from our dedicated staff at the Secretariat, and an overview of our financial status, the report captures the essence of our collective efforts and achievements. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our members, partners, donors, and stakeholders for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in driving forward our missions.
