In 2024, human rights defenders across Asia faced another year marked by intensifying repression and shrinking civic space. Authoritarian governments continued to use laws to silence dissent, restrict freedom of expression, and weaken democratic institutions. In countries such as Myanmar, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong, peaceful protests were met with violence, new repressive laws were passed, and defenders were subjected to threats, harassment, and forced exile. The need for truth, justice, and accountability remained urgent in the face of worsening humanitarian crises and widespread abuse of power.
Despite these challenges, 2024 was also a year of resilience, solidarity, and action. Human rights defenders—especially women, young people, and marginalized communities—continued their work with courage and determination. Across the region, people gathered, organized, and spoke out. From Timor-Leste’s public hearing on the crisis in Myanmar, to Afghan women raising their voices at the United Nations, to student protests in Bangladesh, movements continued to grow. FORUM-ASIA contributed by providing support, building capacity, strengthening alliances, and helping bring grassroots voices into regional and international spaces.

The report shares key updates and achievements from across our programs and member organizations in 23 countries. It highlights the stories of human rights defenders, collective efforts across borders, and the ongoing push for justice and equality. We are deeply thankful to our members, partners, and donors, whose unwavering commitment and solidarity make this work possible. Together, we continue striving for an Asia where human rights are upheld and freedom is a reality for all.
