Greens surge ahead in landslide by-election victory

The Green Party has won a by-election in Long Ashton by a landslide, with 55.6% of the vote.

Mike Dunn, of The Green Party, received 1,254 votes, with no other party coming close. The Tories received 399 votes (17.7%), and Reform got 349 (15.5%).

Reports from Long Ashton suggest that the Green Party was the only party that actually campaigned.

The Green surge

The Greens also won in the Wincheap by-election in Canterbury.

In August, the Greens also won a seat in Newcastle’s South Jesmond by-election, coming from third place.

A glimmer of hope

On November 12, Zack Polanski appeared on stage with the legendary Rizzle Kicks, where he led ‘tax the rich’ chants. Just five days earlier, he featured on the late-night television show, The Last Leg, with Adam Hill.

It seems that Polanski is employing a strategy similar to Mamdani’s. By appearing in places where younger voters or those put off by politics will take notice β€” like concerts and shows that take the piss out of politics β€” he is showing us that he’s willing to do things differently.

And in doing so, Polanski and the Green Party, more widely, are restoring a sense of hope many of us have not felt since the Labour Party ousted Jeremy Corbyn.
