Photographing the George Floyd Protests

Lynsey Weatherspoon is a storyteller who has found freedom through her camera lens. Living in Atlanta, Georgia as a Black queer woman, Weatherspoon’s work has largely centered on portraiture and magnifying the beauty of the Black South. But it wasn’t until May 29, 2020, at the height of the nationwide outcry over the death of George Floyd, that Weatherspoon documented a protest.

The experience shaped her, telling VICE News that the day is “forever etched in my memory … it was a deeply spiritual moment.” For this episode of Shutter, Weatherspoon spoke at length with VICE News about the impact of that moment and the importance of Black photographers documenting Black stories.
