On May 6, 1933, stormtroopers raided the Institute for Sexual Science directed by the legendary Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, known for having coined the term “transvestite” in his 1910 book that featured the word in its subtitle. Proud, smart, and unapologetically gay, the bushy-mustachioed Hirschfeld had long been a target of the right. The Nazis didn’t just destroy the building that day, they also killed Dr. Hirschfeld’s maid “Dorchen” Richter (no relation to Walter), the first known trans woman to have received a vaginoplasty.
