According to Associated Press, a man seemingly disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair threw a piece of cake at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum and shouted at people to think of planet Earth.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said Monday that the 36-year-old man was detained following Sunday’s incident and sent to a police psychiatric unit. An investigation has been opened into the damage to cultural artifacts.

Videos posted on social media showed a young man in a wig and lipstick who had arrived in a wheelchair. The man, whose identity was unknown, was also seen throwing roses in the museum gallery to slack-jawed guests.

The cake attack left a conspicuous white creamy smear on the glass but the famous work by Leonardo da Vinci wasn’t damaged.

Security guards were filmed escorting the wig-wearing man away as he called out to the surprised visitors in the gallery:

“Think of the Earth! There are people who are destroying the Earth! Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this.”

Guards were then filmed cleaning the cake from the glass. A Louvre statement confirmed the attack on the artwork involved a “patisserie.”

The 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece has seen a lot in its over-500 years in existence.

The painting was stolen in 1911 by a museum employee, an event that increased the painting’s international fame. It was also damaged in an acid attack perpetrated by a vandal in the 1950s and has since been kept behind glass.

In 2009, a Russian woman who was angry at not being able to get French citizenship threw a ceramic cup at it, smashing the cup but not harming the glass or the painting.

According to the Fox5NY, New York State is now offering driver’s licenses with an “X” gender identity marker, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday.

The “X” option for licenses, learner’s permits, and non-driver identification cards is being implemented in conjunction with a state law approved last June.

Proponents of the change had argued that limiting gender identity on licenses to either male or female discriminated against nonbinary New Yorkers.

The option is open to new applicants as well as New Yorkers with existing licenses. They will have the option to change their gender marker from “M” or “F” to “X.”

“Every person, regardless of their gender identity or expression, deserves to have an identity document that reflects who they are,” Hochul said in a prepared statement.

According to Saudi Gazette and Chalkbeat, officials of New York City, the largest city in the United States, have announced that public schools would teach Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) heritage starting this fall, with an eye on reducing injustice against the minority group.

The city will have a pilot curriculum for all grade levels at first and introduce it to the whole school system by the fall of 2024.

At a press conference at Tweed Courthouse, the education department’s Manhattan headquarters, Chancellor David Banks said the curriculum “honors all that our Asian American and Pacific Islander students and families contribute daily to our school communities and city.”

“We want each child to be heard and seen for who they are, to feel deep in their bones that they are respected and important,” Banks said.

This new curriculum will cover stories from numerous AAPI figures and a multitude of communities who have left their mark on this country, said Banks.

Banks added one of the ways to combat racism and hate is by teaching and learning about each other’s stories and histories.

“We are a better city, a better people when we know the history of our fellow New Yorkers,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who called the development “historical.”

The city would also work on professional development for teachers to integrate the new curriculum into their broader school lessons as well as new resources and books.

The lessons are part of the city’s roughly $200 million investment in Universal Mosaic, a curriculum under development that aims to provide more culturally representative lessons for the nearly 1 million students in the nation’s largest school system.

According to Associated Press (AP), once again, one of America’s deadliest mass shootings happened in Texas.

Among the latest victims were 19 children in the small town of Uvalde, west of San Antonio, where on Tuesday an 18-year-old gunman opened fire inside an elementary school in the nation’s deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade and the latest gruesome moment for a country scarred by a string of massacres.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott identified the gunman as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos. Two other adults also died in the attack. The gunman was killed by authorities.

The attack began about 11:30 a.m. when the gunman crashed his car outside the school and ran into the building, according to Travis Considine, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. A resident who heard the crash called 911, and two local police officers exchanged gunfire with the shooter.

Officials did not immediately reveal a motive, but they identified the assailant as Salvador Ramos, a resident of the community about 85 miles (135 kilometers) west of San Antonio. Law enforcement officials said he acted alone.

Ramos had hinted on social media that an attack could be coming, according to state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who said he had been briefed by state police. He noted that the gunman “suggested the kids should watch out,” and that he had bought two “assault weapons” after turning 18. Before heading to the school, Ramos shot his grandmother, Gutierrez said.

But President Joe Biden appeared ready for a fight, calling for new gun restrictions in an address to the nation hours after the attack. President Joe Biden angrily made a renewed push after the tragedy.

“When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?” he asked in an address from the White House.

The school has nearly 600 students in second, third, and fourth grades. The vast majority of the students are Latino.

“My heart is broken today,” said Hal Harrell, the school district superintendent. “We’re a small community, and we’re going to need your prayers to get through this.”

The tragedy in Uvalde was the deadliest school shooting in Texas history, and it added to a grim tally in the state, which has been the site of some of the deadliest shootings in the U.S. over the past five years.

According to BBC, a Kinross man has achieved a childhood ambition to break the world record for the longest marathon on a swing.

Richard Scott, 51, completed the 36-hour challenge on Sunday, beating the existing record by two hours. The father-of-three was cheered on by supporters during the challenge, which is awaiting final confirmation by Guinness World Records.

Mr Scott said he felt fine after the challenge, despite hitting “the wall” at the 18-hour mark.

He said: “We were in a marquee that had no sides on it, so I was facing into the blackness and although there was a big moon above, I couldn’t see it. So I was sitting for about six hours looking into the black. My legs were really sore at the time and I was getting really tired.”

Fortunately, he was allowed a five-minute break every hour, which could be saved up.

“I had a half-hour break, so in that time I had to go to the toilet, stretch and sleep,” Mr Scott said. “So I got 12 minutes sleep and that kind of reset things.”

He was kept going by family and friends and found concentrating one of the main challenges.

“There were occasions where I was talking to somebody and I’d actually forget to swing,” he said. “The people watching me said I was slowing down too much. But the people around me kept me going.”

The record-breaking challenge at Loch Leven’s Larder cricket pitch, was watched by independent witnesses, working in four-hour shifts.

The whole event also had to be filmed with a clock in shot. The documentation will be sent to Guinness World Records and will take up to three months to verify.

Mr Scott said he “didn’t really have a clue” what was going on after completing the challenge, which was supported by Kinross and District Rotary Club. He said: “I was so tired, I almost felt like I was drunk. People came out with Prosecco and it was a real party atmosphere.”

According to the Associated Press of Pakistan, he was taking part in a debate at the United Nations Security Council here on the issue of Conflict and Food Security. He said throughout history, hunger and war had been grim handmaidens, although the world had made progress in promoting prosperity.

“The systemic causes of conflict and poverty have yet to be overcome. Inequality and insecurity are the hallmarks of our era.”

The minister said, “In this decade of action to achieve sustainable development goals, we instead have confronted a series of disasters, the COVID pandemic, economic recession, spiraling prices, and the escalating impacts of climate. These have reversed global growth and for the first time in 30 years increased poverty and hunger.”

“Eighty percent of the 800 million undernourished and 40 million facing famine, inhabit countries riven by conflict or emerging from conflict.”

Bilawal said the UN initiative on global food security will go a long way in addressing the immediate crisis of food security and the leadership behind such humanitarian efforts must be appreciated.

“The call to action will help ramp up food production, help keep supply chains open, address blockages, mobilize financial and agricultural resources to where they are needed and help poor farmers expand local production and much more.”

He said Pakistan looked forward to playing its bold part in this UN call to action.

“The people of Ukraine go hungry due to ongoing conflict. 95 percent of the people of Afghanistan are under the threat of poverty as a direct result of the conflict. People of occupied territories in Palestine and Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir are constantly imprisoned by perpetual conflict. They are arbitrarily and inhumanely suffering from immense misery including hunger. Kashmir has become a symbol of the dysfunction of this institution and this council.”

The actions of August 5, 2019, and May 5, 2022, by India in Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir is not only an assault on the people of Jammu and Kashmir but it is an assault on the United Nations and the Security Council and its resolutions and the fourth Geneva Convention.”

The minister referred to the inaction of the UN on the internationally recognized disputed Kashmir region.

“The inaction of this forum while the Muslim majority of Kashmir is being turned into a minority in their land and home leads the youth of Kashmir to question as to who will resolve this conflict and who will deliver the peace they were promised,” he remarked.

He said, “Resolve the Kashmir dispute and open the doors to peace in South Asia and watch how the farmers in Pakistan and India can feed the world.”

He observed that the world was in the middle of the most deadly pandemic of our time. “Millions have died, people continue to die and the health and economic toll of this pandemic will outlast this pandemic.”

“Our continents are sinking, our planet is under threat. Is it not the right time to rise above conflicts of man and face the threats to humanity?”

“They say history repeats itself, first as a tragedy and then as a farce. When new wars end old wars return. At the end of the last cold war what we saw was the beginning of the new war.”

Bilawal said, “From our own experience we most humbly and respectfully appeal to you to deploy dialogue and diplomacy in the pursuit of peace before and not after the next Great War. Save another generation of humanity from the misery of conflict and then watch as the new generation unlocks its true potential.”

“We can rise to the challenges of our time. We can be the generation that ends hunger; we can be the generation that saves our planet. We can be the generation that breaks this cycle,” Bilawal concluded.

According to Associated Press, Massachusetts on Wednesday reported a rare case of monkeypox in a man who recently traveled to Canada, and health officials are looking into whether it is connected to small outbreaks in Europe.

Monkeypox is typically limited to Africa, and rare cases in the U.S. and elsewhere are usually linked to travel there. A small number of confirmed or suspected cases have been reported this month in the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Spain.

U.S. health officials said they are in contact with officials in the U.K. and Canada as part of the investigation. But “at this point, we don’t have any information that links the Massachusetts case to cases in the UK,” said Jennifer McQuiston of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Though it’s the only U.S. case the CDC is aware of, “I do think we are preparing for the possibility of more cases,” she said.

The U.S. case poses no risk to the public, and the Massachusetts resident is hospitalized but in good condition, officials said.

McQuiston said that the man traveled to Canada at the end of April to meet friends and returned in early May. A CDC statement said he used private transportation.

The case is the first in the U.S. this year. Last year, Texas and Maryland each reported a case in people who traveled to Nigeria.
