According to BBC, the two stolen notebooks written by Charles Darwin have been mysteriously returned to Cambridge University, 22 years after they were last seen. The small leather-bound books are worth many millions of pounds and include the scientist’s tree of life sketch.

Their return comes 15 months after the BBC first highlighted they had gone missing and the library launched a worldwide appeal to find them.

“I feel joyous,” the university’s librarian Dr. Jessica Gardner says. She grins broadly as she breaks the news. In fact, she cannot stop smiling.

“They’re safe, they’re in good condition, and they’re home.”

But who returned the two postcard-sized notepads is a real whodunit. They were left anonymously in a bright pink gift bag containing the original blue box the notebooks were kept in and a plain brown envelope. On it was printed a short message: “Librarian, Happy Easter X.”

Inside were the two notebooks, wrapped tightly in cling film. The package had been left on the floor, in a public part of the library with no CCTV, outside Dr. Gardner’s office.

“I was shaking, but I was also cautious because until we could unwrap them, you can’t be 100% sure,” says Gardner.

An agonizing delay of five days followed between finding the package and the police granting permission to open the cling film, examine the notebooks and confirm they were genuine. She admits she had feared the notebooks would not be returned in her lifetime.

“I thought it might take years. My sense of relief at the notebooks’ safe return is profound and almost impossible to adequately express. “I was heartbroken to learn of their loss and my joy at their return is immense.”

The notepads date from the late 1830s after Darwin had returned from the Galapagos Islands. On one page, he drew a spindly sketch of a tree, which helped inspire his theory of evolution and more than 20 years later would become a central theory in his groundbreaking work On the Origin of Species.

Country is facing worst economic crisis in decades since March while doctors also fury over a shortage of medicine.

Rajapaksa, governing the country since 2019 with family members on top positions, revoked a state of emergency late on Tuesday after five days as dozens of lawmakers walked out of the ruling coalition, leaving his government in a minority.

The debt-laden country has been struggling to pay for imports due to a shortage of foreign exchange.

Sri Lankans have been suffering from shortages of fuel, power, food, drugs and other items for weeks, and doctors say the entire health system could collapse.

Street protests began a month ago and have intensified in recent days, with people openly defying the emergency and a weekend curfew to demand the ouster of Rajapaksa.

“May I remind you that 6.9 million people voted for the president,” Highways Minister Johnston Fernando said in parliament in response to criticism from the opposition and cries of “Go home Gota”.

“As a government, we are clearly saying the president will not resign under any circumstances. We will face this.”

After Fernando’s speech, nearly 200 doctors, some in blue scrubs, marched on national hospital road in capital Colombo, chanting slogans and holding pla cards “Strengthen people’s right to live. Declare a health emergency.”

“The patients who are on chemotherapy, we have to monitor them carefully. Daily we have to monitor these investigations,” Samararathna added, Sri lankan Media reported.

“So, if we can’t do it, we can’t decide the way forward. We can’t decide on the proper management. Sometimes our chemotherapy drugs are causing severe side effects, so the only way we have to find it is by doing these investigations.”

Cancer drugs mainly Filgrastim and Cytarabine, antibiotics, were in short supply he added.

Another doctor at Colombo’s Lady Ridgeway Hospital (the largest free-of-charge facility)for Children with some 2,000 beds, Vasan Ratnasingam, said they had run out of at least one vital drug, Digoxin, given for heart conditions.

“And other than that, 102 essential drugs are in shortage. Some of those drugs are frequently used, such as for respiratory tract infections, for urinary tract infections,” he said, warning doctors would have to stop routine treatments and surgeries if immediate action was not taken.

According to IG News, a chalk or crayon image of a bald man with a large nose peeking through a wall with the caption “Kilroy was here” is actually the world’s first viral meme.

Although the meme was not started by American soldiers in World War II, it was definitely associated with them. The meme remained popular for some time after the end of the war.

This little drawing became a public joke. Citizens competed to make the meme, even on the American Statue of Liberty torch, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Marco Polo Bridge in China, the George Washington Bridge in New York, and on the bellies of pregnant women in hospitals.

The name is thought to be derived from JJ Kilroy, a welding inspector at Bethlehem Steel Shipbuilding Company in Massachusetts, USA.

According to the New York Times, Kilroy’s co-workers were annoyed with him for not inspecting his work, so Kilroy was annoyed to write Kilroy was here on ship parts and instead of marking it as usual. And on top of that he started making a bald man with a long nose because Kilroy himself was bald and had a long nose. When these ships went to ports around the world, the warriors would find this drawing when they opened the sealed compartments.

The Kuwait’s Prime Minister, Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah, submitted the cabinet’s resignation to Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the official KUNA news agency reported.

The move comes a day head of a parliamentary vote on a letter of non-cooperation. Ten lawmakers submitted against the PM after he had been accused of committing “unconstitutional” practices, including corruption.

Oil-rich Kuwait has been shaken by disputes between lawmakers and successive governments dominated by the ruling Al-Sabah family for more than a decade, with parliaments and cabinets dissolved several times.

Kuwait is the only Gulf Arab state with a fully elected parliament, which enjoys wide legislative powers and can vote ministers out of office.

Earlier, in February, the country’s interior and defense ministers resigned in protest over the manner of parliamentary questioning of other ministers.

Parliament had questioned Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nasser al-Mohammed Al-Sabah (royals) over corruption claims and alleged misuse of public funds.

Sheikh Ahmed survived a no-confidence vote on February 16, but Defense Minister Sheikh Hamad Jaber Al-Ali Al-Sabah said the lengthy grilling was an “abuse” of power.

“Interrogations are a constitutional right but parliamentary practices are hindering us from fulfilling the aspirations of the Kuwaiti people,” he was quoted as saying at the time by Kuwaiti media.

The country’s last government was sworn in December, the fourth in two years, after the previous one resigned in November amid political deadlock.
