Australian Prime minister Scott Morrison announced on Monday to reopen borders to tourists from February 21. A country strictest and longest-running pandemic travel restriction has ended.

Morrison chaired a meeting of the national security cabinet and stated that, “It’s almost two years since we took the decision to close the borders to Australia”. Australia’s borders slammed shut in March 2020 in the hope of protecting the continent against a surging global pandemic.

For most of the time since then, Australians have been barred from leaving and only a handful of visitors have been granted exemptions to enter.

Prime Minister Morris announced the borders will reopen to all visa holders “on the 21st of February of this year,” adding, “if you’re twice vaccinated, we look forward to welcoming you back to Australia.”

The rules have stranded nationals overseas, split families, hammered the country’s multi-billion-dollar tourist industry, and prompted often bitter debates about Australia’s status as a modern, open and outward-looking nation.

According to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Every month of border closures has cost businesses an estimated $2.6 billion.

In recent months, rules have been gradually relaxed for Australians, long-term residents and students.

The latest decision will see almost all remaining caps lifted.

It comes after the country’s long-standing “COVID-zero” policy was abandoned, vaccination rates skyrocketed and the once stellar track-and-trace system collapsed under a wave of Omicron cases.

Only a handful of countries remain closed to tourists among them Japan, China, New Zealand and several Pacific Island nations.

The 64-year-old Labor peer and Former Lord Nazir Ahmed were found guilty and have been jailed for five years and six months. The Sheffield Crown Court heard the sexual assaulting case of two young children.

Nazir raped teenage girl and attempted to rape 11 year boy in the 1970’s when he was a teenager and lived in Rotherham. The defendant Nazir Ahmed was about 16 or 17 years old but the girl was much younger. Ahmed was also found guilty of a serious sexual assault against a boy under 11, in the same time period.

According to Independent, Judge, Mr. Justice Lavender jailed Ahmed and said his actions had “profound and lifelong effects” on his victims.

According to a victim personal statement from the male complainant read in court and said being sexually abused by the three men had

“Affected me on a daily basis”.

    He added that,

“I buried the abuse and carried it with me on my own for years and years. I feel shame because of what these men did to me. This is not about revenge, this is about justice.”

The victim of the attempted rapes read her own victim personal statement in court, saying that “An overwhelming feeling of shame remained with me throughout my childhood and early adult years.

“It was a burden I was made to carry, and it silenced me for many years.

“It is now time for me to pass that burden to him the pedophile who I know feels no personal shame.”

Ahmed‘s two older brothers Mohammed Farouq, 71, and Mohammed Tariq, 66, were also charged with indecent assault in relation to the same boy that Ahmed abused, according to Independent.

Both men were deemed unfit to stand trial, but a jury found that they did the acts alleged.

Farouq and Tariq were both given absolute discharges after the judge said the only other two options a hospital order or a supervision order would not be appropriate in this case.

According to Mr Justice Lavender passed judgment, “Your actions have had profound and lifelong effects on the girl and the boy, who have lived with what you did to them for between 46 and 53 years. “Their statements express more persuasively than I ever could how your actions have affected their lives in so many different and damaging ways.”

He jailed Ahmed for three and a half years for the offence of buggery, and imposed two more sentences of two years for each of the attempted rapes.

Former Labor member Ahmed resigned from the House of Lords in November 2020 after reading the contents of a conduct committee report which found he sexually assaulted a vulnerable woman who sought his help.

The report made him the first peer to be recommended for expulsion, but he resigned before this could be implemented, Independent reported.

Zhang has promised a “totally innovative” ceremony but conceded that the pandemic and freezing weather will limit its scale compared to the Summer Games. Web Desk:

The sudden hit Wordle, in which once a day players get six chances to guess a five-letter word, has been acquired by The New York Times Company. The smash online word game will integrate the daily word puzzle into The New York Times Games suite of word games.

Wordle was acquired from its creator, Josh Wardle, a software engineer in Brooklyn, for a price in the low seven figures, The Times said. The company said the game would initially remain free to new and existing players.

Wordle first appeared on a no-frills, ad-free website in October, and had 90 users on Nov. 1, that number grew to 300,000 by the middle of this month, and now millions play the game daily, according to the Times announcement. The game is played online and allows you to share your daily performance with colorful square emojis.

The game was originally created by Wardle as a gift for his partner, Palak Shah, after the two of them got hooked on word games (like the Times’ Spelling Bee and crosswords) during the pandemic. It was publicly released in late 2020, but has since exploded in popularity, thanks in part to the viral, emoji-based messages that allow players to share how they did on the daily puzzle without spoiling it for others.
