According to the France24 News, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is facing a backlash from Chinese web users on Tuesday after Beijing said its space station was forced to take evasive action to avoid hitting two of the satellites launched by his Star link Internet Services project.

China’s Tiangong space station was forced to take preventive collision avoidance control during two close encounters with SpaceX’s Star link satellites in July and October, according to a document submitted to the UN’s space agency by Beijing this month.

On both occasions, the satellites moved into orbits that prompted space station operators to change course, the document said. “The maneuver strategy was unknown and orbital errors were hard to be assessed”, Beijing said of the satellite involved in the October incident, adding that it took action to ensure the safety and lives of in-orbit astronauts.

Chinese social media users blasted Musk and his companies over the incident, with one hashtag racking up 87 million views by Tuesday morning.

California-based SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Although Musk is widely admired in China, the reputation of Tesla, which sells tens of thousands of vehicles in the country each month, has faltered this year following a spate of crashes, scandals, and data storage concerns. But Tesla is still hugely popular and sells around one out of every four of its cars in the country, as well as building a rare wholly-owned factory in Shanghai.

According to CNN, when Physics Professor Vinod Menon returned to in-person classes this semester, he was greeted with some junk mail and a nondescript package in a battered cardboard box that weighed 4 pounds, 8 ounces.

Menon, the chairman of the physics department, at first thought it was some sort of memento sent by a former student, but when he opened the box, he found stacks for $50 and $100 bills, $180,000 in all.

“I’ve never seen this kind of money in real life in cash form,” Menon told CNN. I was shell-shocked and I just did not know how to react.”

There was an unsigned letter in the package explaining that the donor graduated long ago from The City College of New York (CCNY) with a double major in physics and mathematics, then got an MA in physics there and went on to get a double Ph.D. in physics and astronomy.

“Assuming that you are a bit curious as to why I am doing this, the reason is straightforward: the excellent educational opportunity available to me, which I took full advantage of at CCNY gave me the basis to continue to develop,” the letter said.

It had been delivered to CCNY on November 12, 2020, long after the school had moved to distance learning in March because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Menon said he has been going to his lab pretty regularly during the pandemic, but not to the science building where he taught classes.

The letter asked that the money be used to help junior and senior students also double majoring in physics and math who need financial support to continue their studies. Menon said he called the Dean of Sciences immediately and they contacted campus police and the department that handles gifts when they realized how much money they had.

Before CCNY could keep the money, officials had to make sure that it wasn’t the proceeds of some sort of criminal activity. After investigating, officials determined the money was clean. They were not able to identify the donor, there was a name on the package, but it didn’t match anyone in the CCNY alumni records. The return address didn’t solve the mystery either, Menon said.

Once they knew the gift was legit, the CUNY board of trustees voted unanimously to approve a resolution accepting the money. Menon said that his department would honor the anonymous donor’s wish by giving out two full-tuition scholarships each year. Tuition at CCNY is about $7,500 per year, so the gift will fund the scholarships for a decade,

Menon said. “I’d like them to know that firstly, we are thankful for the gift. I’m really honored that he or she decided that this was the right place to spend that kind of money on,” Menon said. “And I’m also proud of the fact that the person had a wonderful career based on the education that they received at City College.”

NYC Mayor-Elect Eric Adams has officially scrapped his mayoral inauguration come January 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adams, Comptroller-elect Brad Lander, and NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams made the somewhat expected announcement Tuesday morning in a joint statement.

“Dear fellow New Yorkers, it is clear that our city is facing a formidable opponent in the Omicron variant of COVID-19, and that the spike in cases presents a serious risk to public health. After consulting with public health experts, we have decided that our joint inauguration ceremony will be postponed to a later date in order to prioritize the health of all who were planning to attend, cover, and work on this major event,” the statement read in part.

During a press conference, Adams said that if the trajectory of the COVID spread in New York City didn’t change course, he had no problem pulling the plug on an inauguration.

According to a source close to the mayor, Adams never really wanted a big event, adding that if ultimately canceled, the money earmarked for the celebratory event would go to charity instead.

“I don’t need anything fancy, I’m still the mayor!” Adams said Monday. “This is not for me…I don’t need anything at all,” he went on to say. “All I need to do is move my mattress to Gracie Mansion and sleep on the floor.”

The ceremony was supposed to have taken place at Kings Theatre. In their statement, Adams, Lander, and Williams thanked the locale for offering to host the inauguration.

“We thank the King’s Theatre for their interest in hosting this exciting moment in our city’s history, and everyone who has been working hard to plan this celebration”, statement.

“Health and safety must come first. We encourage all New Yorkers to get vaccinated, get boosted, and get tested. That is our pathway out of this pandemic, and we will come out of it together.”

More than one in three adults in the U.S. has high blood pressure or hypertension. This can be dangerous because high blood pressure can lead to life-threatening conditions like a heart attack or stroke.

Early diagnosis, a healthy lifestyle, and adopting a few positive habits instead of ignoring them can keep high blood pressure from seriously damaging your health.

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Anyone can develop high blood pressure, but age, race or ethnicity, weight, gender, and family history are certain factors that can increase your risk.

If you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you might be worried about taking medication to bring your numbers down. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you might avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication.

Eat a healthy diet: To help manage your blood pressure, one should limit the amount of sodium, and increase the amount of potassium in the diet. Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 11 mm Hg if you have high blood pressure.

Lose extra pounds: Being overweight or having obesity increases your risk for high blood pressure. Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Being overweight also can cause disrupted breathing while you sleep, which further raises your blood pressure. Weight loss is one of the most effective lifestyle changes for controlling blood pressure. In general, you may reduce your blood pressure by about 1 millimeter of mercury (mm Hg) with each kilogram about 2.2 pounds of weight you lose.

Exercise regularly: Exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower your blood pressure. Regular physical activity, such as 150 minutes a week, or about 30 minutes most days of the week, can lower your blood pressure by about 5 to 8 mm Hg if you have high blood pressure.

Limit the amount of alcohol: Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. By drinking alcohol only in moderation can potentially lower your blood pressure by about 4 mm Hg. Drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points. It can also reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications.

Quit smoking: Each cigarette you smoke increases your blood pressure for many minutes after you finish and puts you at higher risk for heart attack and stroke. Stopping smoking helps your blood pressure return to normal.

With every new college semester, students are faced with multiple syllabuses outlining the subjects in their classes.  But do students read them thoroughly? One Tennessee professor put it to the test.

Associate head of performing arts at the University of Tennessee, Kenyon Wilson, had decided to put an Easter egg in the syllabus for his music seminar class this past semester. A Tennessee university professor hid a cash prize on campus to see if his students fully read the class syllabus.

Music Professor decided to hide $50 in a random locker and bury the combination for the locker in the middle of his syllabus.

The hint read: “Thus (free to the first who claims; locker one hundred forty-seven; combination fifteen, twenty-five, thirty-five), students may be ineligible to make up classes and …”

This would have led students to a locker that contained a $50 bill, free to the first student to claim it. But at the end of the semester, when he went to check the locker, the bill was still there. This showed that none of his 70 students cracked the code.

“It an academic trope that no one reads the syllabus,” Wilson told CNN. “It’s analogous to the terms and conditions when you’re installing software, everyone clicks that they’ve read it when no one ever does.”

Wilson told CNN that his syllabus typically doesn’t change much, but with Covid protocols, there was some new information this time around.

“There’s a standard boilerplate that doesn’t change. But on the first day of class I told them there was stuff that had changed, and for them to make sure they read it,” Wilson added.

When Wilson put the reward in the locker, he left a note inside that read “Congrats! Please leave your name and date so I know who found it.” He was also sure to set the combination lock with a certain number in the noon position, to determine whether any students had tampered with the lock, but the combination was never even turned.

“I had great hopes, and I’d be just as happy having this conversation if one of my students found it on the first week,” Wilson told CNN.

Wilson’s Facebook post not only sparked a reaction from students but gave other professors and teachers around the nation an idea. “Perhaps spring 2022 will be the most well-read syllabi ever,” Wilson noted.

According to The Guardian, Albert Einstein’s handwritten notes on the theory of relativity fetched a record €11.6m at an auction in Paris on Tuesday. The manuscript had been valued at about a quarter of the final sum, which is by far the highest ever paid for anything written by the genius scientist.

It contains preparatory work for the physicist’s signature achievement, the theory of general relativity, which he published in 1915.

Calling the notes without a doubt the most valuable Einstein manuscript ever to come to auction, Christie’s, who handled the sale on behalf of the Aguttes auction house, had estimated prior to the auction that it would fetch between €2m and €3m.

The 54-page document was handwritten in 1913 and 1914 in Zurich, Switzerland, by Einstein and his colleague and confidant Michele Besso, a Swiss engineer.

Christie’s said it was thanks to Besso that the manuscript was preserved for posterity. This was “almost like a miracle”, it said, since Einstein would have been unlikely to hold on to what he considered to be a simple working document. Today the paper offered “a fascinating plunge into the mind of the 20th century’s greatest scientist”, Christie’s said.
