  • UNITED NATIONS: Although current agri-food systems provide nourishment and sustain economies, they also impose huge hidden costs on health and the environment – the equivalent of at least $10 trillion annually – a new report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a Rome-based UN agency, has revealed.

APP reported that the figure represents nearly 10 percent of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the 2023 edition of The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) – the agency’s flagship report – which covers 154 countries.

It introduces the concept of the hidden costs and benefits of agrifood systems, offering a framework through which they can be assessed.

The aim is to help decision makers steer global agrifood systems – the whole industry encompassing food and non-food agricultural production – towards greater sustainability.

“In the face of escalating global challenges: food availability, food accessibility and food affordability; climate crisis; biodiversity loss; economic slowdowns and downturns; worsening poverty; and other overlapping crises, the future of our agrifood systems hinges on our willingness to appreciate all food producers, big or small, to acknowledge these true costs, and understand how we all contribute to them, and what actions we need to take,” FAO Director-General Dongyu Qu said in a statement.

The report found that the biggest hidden costs, more than 70 percent, are driven by unhealthy diets that are high in ultra-processed foods, fats and sugars, leading to obesity and non-communicable diseases, and causing labour productivity losses. This is particularly the case in richer countries.

One fifth of the total costs are environment-related, from greenhouse gas and nitrogen emissions, land-use change and water use, with all countries affected.

Meanwhile, low-income countries are proportionately the hardest hit by hidden costs of agrifood systems, which represent more than a quarter of their GDP, compared to less than 12 percent in middle-income countries and less than eight percent in high-income countries.

Hidden costs associated with poverty and undernourishment are also the most significant in these nations.

The report calls for more regular and detailed analysis by governments and the private sector of the hidden or “true” costs of agrifood systems through true cost accounting, followed by action.

Although there have been previous attempts at measurement, the FAO report is the first to disaggregate these costs down to the national level and ensure they are comparable across cost categories and between countries.

The UN agency said it will dedicate two consecutive editions of the SOFA report to the same theme, marking a first. The current report presents initial estimates, while the 2024 edition will focus on in-depth targeted assessments to identify the best ways to mitigate them such as through taxation, subsidies, and legislation.

FAO has urged governments to use “true cost” accounting to transform agrifood systems to address the climate crisis, poverty, inequality and food security, which will require investment and innovations in areas such as research, data collection and capacity building.

“I hope that this report will serve as a call to action for all partners – from policymakers and private-sector actors to researchers and consumers – and inspire a collective commitment to transform our agrifood systems for the betterment of all,” Qu said.

  • WASHINGTON: Amid escalating Israeli air and ground attacks against besieged Gaza, the United States will transfer $320 million worth of precision bombs to Israel, multiple news outlets reported — as calls for a ceasefire grow, according to APP.

The news comes shortly after the White House said US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “discussed the possibility of tactical pauses” to allow civilians to safely depart from under-attack areas, amid increasing calls for a ceasefire.

The report said US President Biden’s administration has informed Congress of the planned transfer of Spice Family Gliding Bomb Assemblies through a formal notification sent to congressional leaders on October 31.

In New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres led the calls for immediate calls as Palestinian authorities reported that more than 10,000 people have been killed in deadly Israeli air strikes on Gaza.

The secretary-general told reporters that Gaza was becoming a “graveyard for children”, with more than 4,100 killed since the fighting began.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the deployment of new military aid to to Israel, said that Rafael USA, a weapons manufacturer, will transfer bombs to its Israeli parent company for use by Israel, an aid package that includes support and testing, according to the newspaper.

Guterres, the UN chief, also underlined the need to support a $1.2 billion humanitarian appeal to help nearly three million people across the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

“The nightmare in Gaza is more than a humanitarian crisis. It is a crisis of humanity,” he said, speaking to reporters at UN Headquarters in New York.

He also voiced ongoing grave concern over rising violence and an expansion of the conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas, stating that “the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is at a boiling point.”

Guterres highlighted how “the unfolding catastrophe in Gaza makes the need for a humanitarian ceasefire more urgent with every passing hour,” stressing that the protection of civilians is paramount.

“Gaza is becoming a graveyard for children. Hundreds of girls and boys are reportedly being killed or injured every day,” he said.

“More journalists have reportedly been killed over a four-week period than in any conflict in at least three decades. More United Nations aid workers have been killed than in any comparable period in the history of our organization.”

The humanitarian appeal – launched by the UN and partners – will assist the entire population in the Gaza Strip and half a million Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Guterres said that although some aid is getting into Gaza via the Rafah crossing from Egypt, this “trickle of assistance does not meet the ocean of need.”

Over the past two weeks, 400 trucks have made the journey, compared with 500 a day prior to the conflict, and the aid deliveries have not included desperately needed fuel.

“Without fuel, newborn babies in incubators and patients on life support will die,” he warned. “Water cannot be pumped or purified. Raw sewage could soon start gushing onto the streets, further spreading disease. Trucks loaded with critical relief will be stranded.”

The Secretary-General said the way forward is clear, repeating his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law.

He reiterated his appeals for the unconditional release of all Israeli hostages and for the protection of civilians, hospitals, UN facilities, shelters and schools.

“More food, more water, more medicine and of course fuel – entering Gaza safely, swiftly and at the scale needed. Now. Unfettered access to deliver supplies to all people in need in Gaza. Now. And the end of the use of civilians as human shields. Now,” he said.

Addressing the wider impacts of the conflict, Guterres pointed to the “spiral of escalation from Lebanon and Syria, to Iraq and Yemen”. Calling for an end, he said “cool heads and diplomatic efforts must prevail.”

Hateful rhetoric and provocative actions must also cease, he continued. Guterres said he was deeply troubled by the rise in antisemitism and anti-Muslim bigotry, noting that both Jewish and Muslim communities in many parts of the world are on high alert, fearing for their personal safety and security.

With emotions at a fever pitch and tensions running high, “we must find a way to hold on to our common humanity,” he said.

“I think of civilians in Gaza – the vast majority women and children — terrified by the relentless bombardment,” he said.

“I think of all those tortured and killed in Israel nearly one month ago and the hostages.”

The Secretary-General also joined the UN family in mourning 89 staff from its agency that assists Palestine refugees, UNRWA, who have been killed in Gaza.

Many of these colleagues – who include teachers, school principals, doctors, engineers, guards and support staff – were killed along with their family members.

Among them was a young woman called Mai, who “did not let her muscular dystrophy or her wheelchair confine her dreams”, becoming a top student and eventually working in information technology for UNRWA.

  • NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams today unveiled plans to bring back and expand the popular holiday season Open Street along Fifth Avenue and around Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan this December. Building on the success of last year’s groundbreaking program, the 2023 version will set a record for New York City’s largest-ever holiday season-specific Open Street — expanding geographically by nearly 25 percent to reach Central Park and running again on three Sundays in December (3, 10, and 17) between noon and 6:00 PM.

This year, the iconic Fifth Avenue corridor will be fully open to pedestrians between 48th Street and 59th Street, in addition to the area around Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall that will be pedestrianized throughout the holiday season. This dramatic expansion of public space in one of the world’s busiest neighborhoods at this time of year will significantly ease crowding — facilitating access to the iconic holiday window displays and creating a more pleasant holiday environment while also enhancing public safety for New Yorkers and visitors.

Mayor Adams’ bold vision for a pedestrian- and family-friendly Fifth Avenue has also proven beneficial to local businesses. During the program in 2022, businesses saw an additional $3 million in spending — a 6.6 percent increase — according to a study conducted by Mastercard, in partnership with the New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) and Chief Public Realm Officer Ya-Ting Liu. To deliver these commercial and safety benefits all year round, the Adams administration is working with the “Future of Fifth” partnership and their core consultant team to permanently reimagine Fifth Avenue as a safer, less congested, pedestrian-centered boulevard. Today, the Future of Fifth partnership launched a new website and a public survey for all New York City residents and visitors to kick off the community engagement and visioning process for the Future of Fifth. The survey takes approximately two to three minutes to complete and will be open through February 2024.

“Open Streets are good for people and good for business, and we can’t wait to bring back the iconic Fifth Avenue Open Street this holiday season — bigger and better than ever,” said Mayor Adams. “I felt the energy walking down the middle of Fifth Avenue last year — it was electric. And as we get excited for more of the same this December, we’re moving full speed ahead on permanently reimagining Fifth Avenue, so people can have this incredible experience every day of the year.”

“We look forward to welcoming New Yorkers and tourists alike to Fifth Avenue Holidays Open Streets again this year,” said Chief of Staff Camille Joseph Varlack. “These events offer a model of public-private partnership to boost our economy and available open space. We appreciate the significant effort of our city’s agencies — including DOT and NYPD — in making these events happen.”

“Here in New York City, our streets are our front yards — and especially during the holiday season, New Yorkers deserve wide-open front yards where they can walk, play, and shop,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi. “We delivered that this summer with the city’s largest-ever Open Streets and Summer Streets programs in all five boroughs, we’re delivering it again this December with our expanded holiday Open Streets on Fifth Avenue, and we’re going to keep delivering that as we reimagine Fifth Avenue — for good — and transform what it feels like to be outside in the greatest city in the world.”

“We are excited that under Mayor Adams’ leadership, we are bringing back the Fifth Avenue Open Street,” said New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “Whether you are window-shopping or taking in the Rockefeller Center tree, we are building upon last year’s successful program to add improvements this year that will make the Open Street an absolute must-visit part of the holidays for New Yorkers and visitors. And with expansion of the number of days to include the Sunday of the busy Thanksgiving weekend, we expect the Open Street will be more popular than ever.”

“The Fifth Avenue Holiday Street was a tremendous success last year, and I’m delighted that we will be expanding the program and working to design a Fifth Avenue that works for pedestrians and local businesses year-round,” said Chief Public Realm Officer Ya-Ting Liu. “As we learned recently through our partnership with Mastercard, the Fifth Avenue Open Street can result in millions of dollars in additional spending at local businesses, and a delightful holiday experience for New Yorkers and visitors alike.”

Fifth Avenue: On December 3, 10, and 17, from noon until 6:00 PM, Fifth Avenue will be open only to pedestrians between 48th Street to 59th Street. In addition, throughout the entire holiday season, moveable barriers will be placed on the east and west sides of Fifth Avenue, between 48th Street and 52nd Street. On days the street is not designated an Open Street, beginning in the early afternoon on weekdays and in the morning on weekends, these barriers will be used to repurpose a lane of traffic on each side of the avenue as additional pedestrian space. To accommodate high pedestrian traffic, westbound vehicle right turns will be prohibited from Fifth Avenue onto 47th Street, 49th Street, or 51st Street.

On the designated Sundays, Open Street visitors will be able to enjoy a range of performances and other forms of entertainment on multiple stages, along with street activations. Food and beverage vendors will also serve the area, and public seating will be provided.

Rockefeller Center: Starting with the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree on Wednesday, November 30, through January, the city will pedestrianize the streets surrounding Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall, using movable barriers to partially or fully close streets to cars and alleviate foot traffic along sidewalks. With the support of Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and New York City Councilmember Keith Powers, West 49th Street and West 50th Street, between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, will be open only to pedestrians during the most congested hours, between 11:00 AM and 12:00 AM every day. The New York Police Department will help ensure that vehicle traffic does not enter those streets.

Details on Open Streets programming along Fifth Avenue will be announced in November. More information about DOT’s Open Streets program is available online.

  • UNITED NATIONS: Opium poppy production in Afghanistan has plummeted since the Taliban imposed a drug ban last year, according to a new survey by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, as reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

According to the Afghanistan Opium Survey 2023, released by the Vienna-based agency on Sunday, the supply of opium declined by an estimated 95 per cent, falling from 6,200 tons in 2022 to 333 tons in 2023, corresponding to a fall in the area under cultivation, from 233,000 hectares to just 10,800 hectares over the same period.

The near-total contraction of the opiate economy is expected to have far-reaching consequences, UNODC said, highlighting the urgent need for alternative development support for rural communities to build an opium-free future for the Afghan people.

“This presents a real opportunity to build towards long-term results against the illicit opium market and the damage it causes both locally and globally,” said Ghada Waly, UNODC Executive Director.

“At the same time, there are important consequences and risks that need to be addressed for an outcome that is ultimately positive and sustainable, especially for the people of Afghanistan,” she added.

The survey noted the sharp reduction has had immediate humanitarian consequences for many vulnerable rural communities that relied on income from cultivating opium.

Farmers’ income from selling the opium harvested in 2023 to traders fell by more than 92 per cent from an estimated $1,360 million for the 2022 harvest to $110 million in 2023, the survey added.

“Today, Afghanistan’s people need urgent humanitarian assistance to meet their most immediate needs, to absorb the shock of lost income and to save lives,” Ms. Waly said, noting that over the coming months, the country will require strong investment in sustainable livelihoods, to provide farmers with opportunities away from opium.

UNODC also emphasized that though there are high levels of opiate use within Afghanistan, evidence-based treatment options remain limited.

It called for evidence-based treatment to be integrated in public health measures and assistance, including to prevent people with opiate use disorders from turning to potentially even more harmful substances.

Beyond Afghanistan, less heroin may lead to reduced trafficking and use, or it could spur the emergence of harmful alternatives, such as fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, UNODC warned.

Data on seizures indicate that traders are selling off their opium inventories from past record harvests to weather the shortfall in 2023, while heroin processing has decreased.

However, trafficking in other drugs, namely methamphetamine, has surged in the region.

  • NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, and Lyft today unveiled plans to expand and improve the Citi Bike system to meet ridership demand and growth and to promote cycling and micromobility.

By the end of next year, Citi Bike will double its electric bike fleet and pilot at least two electrified charging/docking stations, with plans to electrify 20 percent of stations in the coming years. Citi Bike will also introduce new price caps to its e-bike pricing model, and has already added 2,800 classic bikes and replaced 2,200 existing bikes as a part of its Phase 3 expansion.

Since its launch 10 years ago, Citi Bike has become a ubiquitous part of the fabric of New York City, and now is the largest bike share program in the nation and the fastest-growing transportation network in the city’s history with 200 million all-time rides. Lyft and the city have doubled the system’s number of docking from 1,000 in August 2020 to 2,000 in September 2023. In August 2023, the system set a monthly record with over 4 million rides, up 63 percent from 2019. A record-breaking 161,422 Citi Bike rides took place on October 28, 2023, representing approximately one-quarter of the total estimated cycling trips on an average day in New York City. Additionally, as of October 29, there have been 30.7 million Citi Bike rides this calendar year – setting a new annual record with more than two months left in the year.

“Biking in New York City wouldn’t be what it is today without Citi Bike, and we’re launching a new era of our city’s two-wheeled history by expanding and improving this system,” said Mayor Adams. “I’ve biked all across the city — from High Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge — and this agreement with Lyft ensures that public bike share will be available for New Yorkers to do the same for the next decade. As we work every day to promote safe cycling on bikes and e-bikes, we will never stop making it greener, cleaner, and easier for all New Yorkers to travel across our great city.”

“Our shared bike system has become a fundamental part of our transportation network as more New Yorkers choose to bike every year,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi. “We’re glad to extend our congratulations to Citi Bike for setting a new monthly record of four million rides in August. We’re excited to continue this partnership, expand the Citi Bike service to more communities, and add a greater share of e-bikes to the total fleet.”

“We’ve seen bike share grow to become an essential part of New York City’s transportation landscape, with hundreds of thousands of Citi Bike trips taken every week. Biking is often the fastest way to get around the city—and these new initiatives will make Citi Bike an even more convenient option for commuters,” said DOT Commissioner Rodriguez. “We look forward to working with Lyft on these important program improvements.”

“E-bikes are a game changer, and New Yorkers are continually raising the bar, riding and enjoying them more every week this year,” said Caroline Samponaro, vice president for micromobility and transit policy, Lyft. “Riding an e-bike makes the Big Apple feel small, helping riders cross bridges and travel longer distances in less time without breaking a sweat.”

Under Mayor Adams’ leadership, New York City has launched and completed significant bike infrastructure and greenway projects across all five boroughs. After winning a $7.25 million federal grant, the Adams administration launched a groundbreaking effort to expand the Harlem River Greenway seven miles into the Bronx — delivering critical public space in a community too often left behind. The administration has also completed and launched major bike infrastructure projects in East New York in Brooklyn, on Soundview Avenue in the Bronx, on Third Avenue in Manhattan, and more.

The Citi Bike system has grown to more than 30,000 bikes and 2,000 stations, more than quadrupling its fleet from 6,000 bikes and 332 stations at launch in May 2013. After the completion of the current Phase 3 expansion, Citi Bike will have deployed more than 40,000 bikes. . This year’s expansion areas include Ditmas Park and Flatbush in Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Corona, and Elmhurst in Queens; and Bathgate and Marble Hill in the Bronx.

  • New York: New York City Comptroller Brad Lander announced a settlement with the family of Kevin Bryan, who died in Department of Correction (DOC) custody on Rikers Island in 2022, for $2.25 million. Then 35-year-old Kevin Bryan died by suicide on September 14, 2022, six days after being arrested for trespass and with bail set at $5,003.

The Comptroller’s office is empowered to settle claims against the City prior to litigation when doing so is in the best financial interest of the City.

“While no amount of money can bring Kevin Bryan’s life back, we hope to achieve a small bit of justice by reaching this settlement swiftly,” said Comptroller Lander. “Following a judicious review of the facts and the law surrounding the family’s claim, my office reached a settlement with the Bryan family that is in the best financial interest of the City of New York.”

“The family of Kevin Bryan has suffered a tremendous loss that could and should have been avoided. A mother lost a son, a sister lost a brother and a grandmother lost a grandson. In bringing the civil action to a conclusion it is our deepest hope that this tragedy sheds light on the systemic problems at Rikers Island which have existed for many years. Inmates at Rikers Island should not be facing a death penalty when incarcerated,” said Michael J. Aviles, Esq., counsel on behalf of the Bryan family.

The court set bail at $5,003, which Bryan could not make, and sent him to Rikers Island to await trial. The BOC report revealed a lack of supervision and failure to adhere to internal DOC protocol as contributing to Bryan’s death by suicide. The report further indicates that the Correction officer on duty allowed Bryan access to a DOC staff bathroom and did not appropriately supervise him for nearly an hour, which contributed to Bryan’s death by suicide. After being allowed into the bathroom, Bryan locked himself in, and staff took over 50 minutes to break open the door. DOC personnel subsequently called emergency medical attention, but resuscitation efforts failed.

Comptroller Lander continued, “Since well before Kevin Bryan’s death, I have been calling out the crisis at Rikers as being out of control, yet more and more people are being sent there, and too little is being done to address the crisis. Pre-trial detention should not be a death sentence.”

To learn more about the Comptroller’s oversight of the DOC, visit the DOC dashboard.

Under Chapter 5, Section 93 of the New York City Charter, the Comptroller has the authority to settle claims made against the City. Claims & settlements data can be found in the Comptroller’s Annual Claims Report.

The settlement was led by Justina K. Rivera, General Counsel and Deputy Comptroller for Legal Affairs; Seunghwan Kim, Assistant Comptroller, Bureau of Law and Adjustment (BLA); and was brought about by the investigation and negotiation of BLA Director of Litigation, Lynell Canagata and Deputy Director, Rohit Mallick. • UNITED NATIONS: Amid Israel’s escalating attacks against Gaza that have killed nearly 8,000 men, women and children, Israeli settlers have displaced more than 820 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank, worsening the already terrible situation in the ravaged enclave.

APP reported, Israeli settler violence has increased significantly, from an already high average of three incidents per day in 2023 to seven a day now, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OHCA).

During this period, OCHA recorded 171 settler attacks against Palestinians, resulting in 26 different casualty incidents, damage to 115 Palestinian properties, and some 30 reported incidents of both property damage and casualties.

Cases of harassment, trespass and intimidation are not included in the reporting, although they too increase the pressure on Palestinians to leave their land, the Office noted.

An increasing number of Israeli settlers have moved onto West Bank land, occupied by Israel since 1967, undermining a potential two-State solution to the long running conflict, where two States live peacefully side by side.

Access restrictions, typically imposed by the Israeli authorities, have also intensified throughout the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. These are particularly severe in areas near Israeli settlements and in the so-called “Seam Zone”; the Palestinian area isolated by Israel’s 712-kilometre-long barrier in the West Bank.

Settlers too have imposed movement restrictions, OCHA said, blocking access roads to Palestinian communities, limiting their access to essential services and livelihoods. In some cases, settlers have also damaged water resources which herding communities rely on.

Humanitarian assistance services, including health and education, have also had to stop since the restrictions intensified, OCHA added.

The Office also noted the use of firearms to intimidate Palestinians, with more than one in every three settler-related incidents since 7 October involving settlers using firearms to threaten Palestinians, including by opening fire.

On 12 October, eight households, comprising 51 people, were displaced from the Shihda WaHamlan herding community in Nablus in northern West Bank, after settlers threatened them at gunpoint, saying they would kill them and set their tents on fire during the night, according to OCHA.

It added that in almost half the cases, Israeli security forces “accompanied or actively supported” the attackers.

Many of the latter incidents were followed by confrontations between Israeli forces and Palestinians, where three Palestinians were killed, and dozens injured. Eight Palestinians were killed by settlers directly, as of the end of October, the Office noted.

Damage or destruction was caused to 24 residential structures, 40 structures used for farming, 67 vehicles and more than 400 trees and saplings.

Meanwhile, according to the latest estimates, Israeli strikes on Gaza have killed over 8,500 Palestinians, including 3,500 children. An estimated 1 million people have been displaced from the northern half of Gaza, according to the United Nations.

Calls for a halt to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza have continued to grow as Israel’s military operations ramped up in recent days.

  • New York: The Bureau of the General Assembly’s Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People reiterated its appeal for an immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip leading to a cessation of hostilities.

In a statement, it said that Israel’s relentless and heavy bombardment of densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip, since 7 October, and its recent ground invasion of northern Gaza has resulted in nearly 9,000 Palestinians killed, mostly women and children, some 22,000 others wounded and 2,000 are missing, most likely under the rubble, said a press release of bureau.

“These indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian objects constitute grave breaches of international law and must cease immediately,” it said.

“Israel, the occupying power, must comply with its obligations, including to allow and facilitate immediate and unimpeded humanitarian aid for Palestinians civilians in Gaza including food, water, fuel, electricity and medical supplies,” it added.

The Bureau once more demanded full respect for international humanitarian law and human rights law, and for a halt to the indiscriminate attacks against Palestinian and Israeli civilians and protected objects, including hospitals, schools, places of worship and UN facilities. It said some 70 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) staff members have been also killed during the bombings.

The Bureau also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive, as per the resolution adopted by the General Assembly.

“The international community cannot stand by and watch as this horrific Nakba continues to be inflicted on the Palestinian people.”  The Bureau condemned the persistent voices in Israel inciting against and dehumanizing Palestinians, as well as the provocative calls for their forced transfer from their ancestral land and for the “destruction” of the Gaza Strip.

The Bureau stressed the urgency of the gathering of evidence by UN international mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court, to ensure accountability of all the crimes being perpetrated.

The Bureau is also gravely concerned about the escalation of tensions and settler violence in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem as Israeli government officials have openly distributed assault weapons to extremist Israeli settlers who have increased their attacks and forcibly displaced entire Palestinian villages in the South Hebron Hills, with the support of the Israeli occupation army.

The Bureau cautioned that such actions will further destabilize the West Bank and lead to more violence.

“Force will not end the legitimate Palestinian national aspirations. Only the fulfilment of their inalienable human rights, including to self-determination and return, and a credible peace process leading to the implementation of the two-State solution will do,” a press release said.

“This reflects the overwhelming consensus of the international community, and its parameters are well known: two States, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security, and with East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.” “This formula, based on international law and UN resolutions is the most viable path to a just and lasting peace to the region.”

  • Pakistan has called on UN Human Rights Council to address the massive rights violations taking place in situations of foreign occupation and intervention, highlighting the terrible ordeals in Gaza and occupied Palestine as well as Jammu and Kashmir, according to Associated Press of Pakistan (APP)

“Human rights must be promoted comprehensively and in a balanced manner,” Ambassador Munir Akram told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday while underscoring the need for avoiding selectivity and double standards in the 47-member Council’s approach.

Speaking in a debate on the annual report of the President of Geneva-based Human Rights Council, the Pakistani envoy said that it must address the massive human rights violations which take place in situations of foreign occupation and intervention.

“The heart wrenching slaughter that is taking place in Gaza and occupied Palestine is visible on our television screens today,” he said, pointing out that the occupying power –Israel — has enjoyed impunity for these violations for over 50 years.

“The massive violations in occupied Jammu and Kashmir are also well recorded,” Ambassador Akram said.

In both instances, he said, the occupying powers — Israel and India — have sought to suppress the legitimate national liberation struggles under the guise of combating terrorism.

“The most recent conflict in the Middle East illustrates the danger of allowing the persistence of foreign occupation,” the Pakistan envoy added, referring to the Israel-Palestinian conflict .

At the same time, Ambassador Akram pushed for a “much more robust effort” to counter the rise of racial hatred, religious supremacy and extreme and violent nationalism and fascism in certain parts of the world.

“Islamophobia is a major element of the new phenomena manifested in the discrimination and attacks against Muslims, hijab ‘bans’, the repeated burning of the Holy Quran, blasphemous caricatures and the vandalization of Islamic symbols and holy sites,” he said, adding that such acts cannot be allowed under the cover of “freedom of expression’.

“In our eastern neighbourhood — India — the pandemic of Islamophobia poses the danger of Muslim genocide,” the Ambassador Akram said, saying that the menace should be frontally dealt with by the Council.

“The greatest weakness of the Human Rights Council is selectivity and double standards,” the Pakistani envoy said, noting that no special mechanisms have been created to address human rights violations in a developed country – only in developing countries.

“Unfounded allegations are made against one large developing country – a veiled reference to Iran — which is declared as a strategic adversary, while another large developing country – — India — considered a strategic ally – enjoys a free pass, even through several (UN) Special Rapporteurs and Mechanisms have repeatedly expressed serious concern about the widespread human rights violations being committed by the extremist ruling party in this country.”

The priority of the Human Rights Council must be to promote rapid and equitable development by seeking urgent support for developing countries facing food, fuel and finance crises, and reform the unequal financial, trade and technology regime, the Pakistani envoy said.

He said the adoption of the international covenant of the right to development will be the key component to promote economic and social rights.

New York: We all love New York City. And this year, New Yorkers have been showing their love by lending a helping hand as part of our Spread Love campaign. Since March, nearly 30,000 New Yorkers have given more than 235,000 hours of their time to help out our neighbors in need.

Thanks in no small part to the sacrifices of volunteers, our city is back better than ever. Jobs are at an all-time high and crime is down. We overcame the darkest days of the pandemic because of the selfless work of everyday volunteers. But so many of our neighbors — especially young people, families, and older adults — still need our help. Imagine what would happen if every New Yorker committed just one hour a week to an act of service. The result would be transformative.

There are so many opportunities to get involved. It can be as simple as helping an older neighbor shovel snow or pitching in to clean up your local park. If you don’t have time to spare, you can also donate directly to community organizations that support New Yorkers in need. Organizations are happy to take extra food items, clothing, hygiene products, technology, and supplies.

As cold weather approaches, you can also donate winter coats and jackets to keep your fellow New Yorkers warm. Just this past week, we launched the annual New York Cares coat drive, with the goal of collecting and distributing a record 250,000 coats. You can help make history by reaching into your closet and dropping off old or unused coats at a location near you. Find out where at newyorkcares.org/coat-drive.

When you give to others, you won’t just be helping New Yorkers in need — you’ll also be helping yourself. I have felt the joy of giving back firsthand. Every Wednesday, I hand out food to our brothers and sisters in need. It is one of the most meaningful moments in my week. And that’s why we launched the We <3 New York campaign: to help every New Yorker discover the satisfaction of engaging with their communities.

The opportunities to help out are nearly limitless and our city’s NYC Service office can help connect you. At NYC.gov/Service you can easily find volunteer postings near you from more than 500 community organizations across the city. You can search by interest, keyword, location, and more. You can sign up by yourself or with family and friends, because volunteering together is even more fun!

Recent volunteer opportunities include a chance to work with furry friends, helping older New Yorkers take care of their pets. You can also sign up to develop your green thumb by volunteering at a local garden, help neighbors get access to healthy food by working at a food pantry, tutor local high school students in language, or support our newest New Yorkers through an asylum seeker volunteer opportunity.

Love means taking action. Love means serving others. Love means getting stuff done for New Yorkers in need. Now is the time to spread that love to every block and borough. Together we can make a real difference in the lives of our fellow New Yorkers.

Speaking to an international youth delegation at the Pakistan Mission, he said that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East highlighted the need for a push to settle old disputes. The delegation comprised youth delegates from various countries who were in New York for a 4-day Global Peace Summit, which concluded on Saturday.

Ambassador Akram told the delegation that India had denied Kashmiris their inalienable right to self-determination in contravention of international law, the UN Charter and the UN Security Council resolutions. The 76 years, he said, have witnessed exemplary sacrifices rendered by the different generations of Kashmiris in their legitimate, just and indigenous struggle for freedom from India’s illegal and immoral occupation.

He briefed the delegates about the Kashmir dispute and Black Day, which was observed on Friday, identifying various facets of the Kashmiris’ freedom struggle. The Black Day said was commemorated to remind the international community of its commitments made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir as well as to express solidarity with them.

Ambassador Munir Akram lauded the youth’s commitment to peace-building and fighting climate change. Youth’s involvement in matters that were critical to shaping a bright future was commendable.

He said technology brought the youths belonging to different cultures, backgrounds and regions together on a shared agenda, adding that it formed unity of thought and action for positive outcomes.

WhatsApp introduced “Channels” this summer as a new product, and it’s already being used by private companies, celebrities, sports teams, and newspapers around the world to reach tens of millions of people.

“Our administration is ‘Getting Stuff Done,’ and we want to tell New Yorkers what we are doing and how it can improve their quality of life,” said Mayor Adams. “Our administration is committed to reaching all communities that call New York City home, including immigrant and international communities who already use WhatsApp daily to communicate daily. This outreach in English and Spanish is one more way we’re making sure New Yorkers know what their government is doing for them and how to access services, engage in events, and learn about great things happening in New York City.”

“This administration is making communication with all New Yorkers a top priority, so we’re using one of the most popular communication tools in the world to get it done,” said Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy. “Just like I communicate with friends and family over WhatsApp, so do millions of other New Yorkers, and we’re excited to test out this new platform to share so much of how our city continues to deliver for New Yorkers every day. From direct e-mailing via the ‘Hear From Eric’ to SMS texting via ‘Text With Eric’ to the ‘Get Stuff Done-cast’ podcast and ‘Hear From The Mayor’ monthly call-in radio show, we are constantly adding new ways to reach New Yorkers and get their feedback.”

“In order to build stronger connections with the people we serve, we have to go directly to where New Yorkers stay connected with family and friends,” said Chief Technology Officer Matthew Fraser. “Mayor Adams’ new WhatsApp Channel is another important step in our continuing efforts to democratize access to information and raise awareness of all the impactful work this administration is getting done on behalf of New Yorkers.”

Today’s announcement builds on a series of actions taken to fulfill Mayor Adams’ vision of making this administration the most accessible in the city’s history. In August, Mayor Adams launched “Text With Eric,” an SMS-based communication program to converse one-on-one with New Yorkers about anything they want to discuss. In July, Mayor Adams launched “Hear from the Mayor,” a live, call-in radio show where New Yorkers can regularly call in and discuss issues they care about with the mayor. In January, Mayor Adams launched both “Hear from Eric,” an email-based direct communications program designed to reach New Yorkers where they are about local issues and priorities, as well as the “Get Stuff Done-Cast,” a podcast where he highlights the amazing things New Yorkers from all walks of life are doing to push New York City forward every day. Additionally, in May, Mayor Adams kicked off “Talk with Eric,” the administration’s second series of at least nine community town halls following last year’s successful series of eight “Community Conversations on Public Safety.”
