Authorities in Oman said they found the body of a man who disappeared when floodwaters swept him away from his vehicle. On Sunday, as the storm made landfall, they said a child similarly drowned and two people died in a landslide.

When its eye crossed land, the cyclone was carrying winds of between 120 and 150 km/h (75 to 93 mph), Omani authorities said. It was throwing up waves of up to 10 meters (32 feet). Up to 500cm (20 inches) of rain was expected in some areas, raising the risk of flash floods.

Cyclones steadily lose their power over land and Shaheen was downgraded to a tropical storm after it cleared the ocean, the meteorology service said on Twitter.

The national emergency committee said the power supply would be cut in al-Qurm, east of the capital, to avoid accidents. Aid agencies transferred more than 2,700 people to emergency shelters. Authorities said roads in the capital would be open only to vehicles on emergency and humanitarian work until the storm dies down.

In Iran, state television said rescuers found the body of one of five fishermen who went missing off Pasabandar, a fishing village near the border with Pakistan.

Omani state television broadcast images of flooded roadways and valleys as the storm churned deeper into the sultanate, its outer edges reaching the neighboring United Arab Emirates which has issued warnings to residents that the storm was coming.

Police in the United Arab Emirates were patrolling near beaches and valleys where torrential rains were expected to ensure the residents’ safety.

Government and private-sector employees in al-Ain, on the border with Oman, were urged to work remotely on Monday and authorities called on residents to avoid leaving home except for emergencies, the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office said.

“Authorities are working proactively around the clock to evaluate residential units in expected affected areas and transport families to safe locations until it is safe to return,” it said.

According to NBC News, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday issued its strongest guidance to urging pregnant women to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

According to the CDC, the lack of vaccination has led to more than 125,000 cases, 22,000 hospitalizations, and 161 deaths among pregnant women with COVID-19. Twenty-two of those deaths came in August alone, the highest number on record for a single month. Yet, less than a third of pregnant women have been vaccinated, the agency reported.

Data from hospitals across the country show that roughly 97% of pregnant women who were hospitalized with a confirmed case of COVID-19 were unvaccinated. Along with the risks of severe illness and death for pregnant and recently pregnant women, the virus also puts babies at increased risk of preterm birth and admission to the ICU, according to the CDC.

The CDC strongly recommends the shot for women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or who may want children in the future.

It’s well proven that people with underlying health conditions and pregnancy are at high risk for Covid complications. One of the main complications of Covid during pregnancy is preterm birth, which puts a newborn at risk, as well. In general, premature babies are more likely to have compromised respiratory function because of their underdeveloped lungs. But if a premature baby with underdeveloped lungs ends up with Covid, that newborn is at risk for additional breathing issues.

“I strongly encourage those who are pregnant or considering pregnancy to talk with their health care provider about the protective benefits of the Covid-19 vaccine to keep their babies and themselves safe,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky in a statement.

Doctors say that communicating the risks of Covid to pregnant women is neither easy nor straightforward. Many such women loathe getting the shots, sometimes falling prey to misinformation about the vaccines’ safety and effectiveness.

The CDC, which announced there was enough data to deem the vaccine safe for pregnant women last month, issued the alert to accelerate vaccinations to protect higher-risk pregnant women and their unborn children.

According to Reuters, a man pelted French President Emmanuel Macron with an egg while he was visiting a restaurant and hotel trade fair in the south-eastern city of Lyon on Monday. The egg hit his shoulder, but bounced off without breaking, as he walked through a crowd while a protester shouted “Vive la revolution” (long live the revolution).

The assailant was quickly subdued and removed from the room, with Macron saying he would try to speak with him later.

“If he has something to tell me, let him come,” Macron said at the International Catering, Hotel and Food Trade Fair (SIRHA). “I’ll go see him afterward.”

It was a startling disturbance of the warm welcome by fair attendees for the centrist president, not least after he announced that restaurant tips paid by credit card would no longer be taxed.

Eggs from irate protesters are a common occupational hazard for French politicians, and Macron is no exception.

When he was still a candidate for the presidency in 2017, an egg exploded against his head during a crowded visit at the national agriculture fair in Paris. More recently, a man slapped him across the face while he was shaking hands with well-wishers in the southern city of Valence in June. The man was ordered to serve four months in jail.

Macron’s security detail is expected to be on high alert in the coming months as the centrist leader multiplies his public appearances ahead of a widely expected re-election campaign.

So far he has not officially declared his candidacy for another five-year term in voting set for April.

According to Reuters, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of the murder of African-American man George Floyd in 2020 says he will appeal against his conviction. Derek Chauvin says there were issues with the jury at the trial and that it should not have taken place in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In documents filed on Thursday, Chauvin alleges that the trial judge abused his discretion at several key points of the case. Chauvin raised 14 issues about his prosecution, including the court’s denial of a request for a change of venue that he believed supported his request for an appeal.

The former officer said he had no legal representative for the appeal process as the Minnesota police department’s “obligation to pay for my representation terminated upon my conviction and sentencing”, the Associated Press news agency reports. He has asked the Supreme Court to review an earlier decision to deny him a publicly-financed lawyer.

Chauvin said that in his opinion the judge abused his discretion when he denied requests to sequester the jury throughout the trial. Chauvin also listed issues with the trial itself, including the addition of the third-degree murder charge and the court’s failure to make an official record of numerous sidebars throughout the trial.

Chauvin was sentenced to over 22 years in jail after kneeling on Mr. Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes. His death sparked mass protests against racism and police brutality in the US. He was found guilty of second-degree murder and other charges were barred from owning firearms for life and was also told to register as a predatory offender. The verdict was seen widely as a landmark rebuke of the disproportionate use of force by the police against black Americans.

Chauvin, 45, was given 90 days from the date of his sentencing on 25 June to appeal against his conviction.

“You lied about Iraq being a threat,” shouted Prysner, who was interrupted by Bush telling him to “sit and behave.” The veteran says that Bush “sent him to Iraq in 2003.”

“My friends are dead. You killed people. You lied,” Prysner managed to add before being forcibly removed by staff at the auditorium where the former U.S. president was delivering a speech at Beverly Hills.

“My friends are dead because you lied,” Prysner shouted, telling Bush: “You need to apologize! Apologize!”
