According to Reuters, In the weeks since the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan from a US-backed government, reports have highlighted how biometric databases might be exploited by the new rulers to hunt their enemies. Google has temporarily locked down an unspecified number of Afghan government email accounts.
In a statement on Friday, Alphabet’s Google stopped short of confirming that Afghan government accounts were being locked down, saying that the company was monitoring the situation in Afghanistan and taking temporary actions to secure relevant accounts.
“In consultation with experts, we are continuously assessing the situation in Afghanistan. We are taking temporary actions to secure relevant accounts, as information continues to come in,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement obtained by The Post.
One employee of the former government has told Reuters the Taliban are seeking to acquire former officials’ emails. Late last month the employee said that the Taliban had asked him to preserve the data held on the servers of the ministry he used to work for.
“If I do so, then they will get access to the data and official communications of the previous ministry leadership,” the employee said.
Publicly available mail exchanger records show that some two dozen Afghan government bodies used Google’s servers to handle official emails, including the ministries of finance, industry, higher education, and mines. Afghanistan’s office of the presidential protocol also used Google, according to the records, as did some local government bodies.
Commandeering government databases and emails could provide information about employees of the former administration, ex-ministers, government contractors, tribal allies, and foreign partners.

The book is out in Britain on Thursday and for pre-order in other countries, with the aim of worldwide publication. Jolie’s book will be published in the U.S. in October.
In an Instagram post Hollywood actress while announces her book release talked about children’s rights and said that,
“Here’s a truth you may not know: As a young person, your rights have equal status to the rights of an adult. Not when you reach adulthood, or leave home, or get your first job, but now. Whoever you are, wherever you live – your life is of equal value to any adult or any other young person on the planet”
“Know Your Rights and Claim Them” written with human rights lawyer Geraldine Van Bueren, one of the original drafters of the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, aims to equip kids with the knowledge to safely challenge injustices.
Children have rights just as adults do and they should have the power and agency to claim them. Over the last couple of years I have been working with @amnesty and Geraldine Van Bueren QC on a book that aims to help young people do just this, Jolie added.
Jolie, the special envoy for UN refugee agency UNHCR, said she hoped the book would also remind governments of their commitment to the global treaty enshrining children’s civil, social, political, and economic rights.
The book addresses identity, justice, education, and protection from harm, among other issues. It provides guidance on becoming an activist, being safe, and a glossary of terms and organizations.
“Through the book, you have to find your own path forward, because we are very concerned about the safety of children. We don’t want children just running around screaming for their rights and putting themselves in danger,” Jolie said in an interview with Reuters.

Production on the new “Mission: Impossible” movie was shut down seven times due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday that accuses the film’s insurance company of failing to pay out for all but one of the costly stoppages.
Filming on the action series starring Tom Cruise was delayed four times in Italy, and three times in the United Kingdom between February 2020 and June 2021, said the lawsuit filed by Paramount Pictures in U.S. Federal Court in California. The stoppages were caused by positive coronavirus tests among members of the cast or crew or quarantine or lockdowns imposed in countries where the thriller was being filmed.
The lawsuit accuses Indiana-based Federal Insurance Company of breach of contract, saying it has agreed only to pay out $5 million for the first stoppage. According to the lawsuit, the Federal Insurance Company has refused to pay out for the disruption. Documents lodged in the court accuse the insurers of breach of contract, and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.
Federal Insurance did not immediately return a request for comment.
Paramount said in the lawsuit that the insurance company argued there was “no evidence that those cast and crew members could not continue their duties, despite being infected with SARS-CoV-2 and posing an undeniable risk to other individuals involved with the production.”
Paramount did not say how much the shutdowns had cost but said its losses “far exceeded” the $5 million that Federal had agreed to pay for the first instance of coronavirus in February 2020. Paramount is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

According to AP news, European Union plans to recommend that its member states reinstate restrictions on tourists from the U.S. because of rising coronavirus infection levels in the country, EU diplomats said Monday. A decision to remove the U.S. from a safe list of countries for nonessential travel would reverse advice from June when the 27-nation bloc recommended lifting restrictions on U.S. travelers before the summer tourism season.
The guidance could come as early as this week, according to the EU diplomats. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the review process was still ongoing. Any decision would be nonbinding, however. The EU has no unified COVID-19 tourism policy and national governments have the authority to decide whether they keep their borders open to U.S. tourists.
The threshold for being on the EU list is having not more than 75 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days. Coronavirus cases have surged in the U.S. in recent weeks, running at more than 1,100 a day, the highest level since mid-March.
The EU safe list currently includes Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Montenegro, New Zealand, Qatar, Republic of Moldova, Republic of North Macedonia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Ukraine, and the U.S.
According to Catholic News Agency, Pope Francis on Sunday urged Christians to intensify their prayer, penance and fasting for the situation in Afghanistan, as he entrusted the souls of those who have died to God’s mercy. Pope Francis expressed his “great concern” at the tragic situation in Afghanistan and prayed for all those who died in the suicide bomb attack last Thursday outside Kabul international airport.
He said Christians cannot remain indifferent in historic moments such as this one, and he called on them not only to give humanitarian assistance but also pray and fast.
“In historical moments like this we cannot remain indifferent; the history of the Church teaches us this,” He said, “I appeal to everyone to intensify prayer and to practice fasting, prayer and fasting, prayer and penance. This is the time to do it. I am speaking seriously: Intensify prayer and practice fasting, asking the Lord for mercy and pardon.”
Pope Francis spoke on August 29, after leading the traditional Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square, as he does every Sunday.
Pope Francis said he is following the situation with great concern and he participates in the suffering of those mourning for the people who lost their lives in the suicide attacks.
He appealed to everyone to continue to help the needy and to pray that dialogue and solidarity may lead to the establishment of a peaceful and fraternal living together and offer hope for the future of the country. “I entrust the dead to the mercy of God,” he added, referring to the 13 U.S. troops and the estimated 170 Afghan civilians who were killed in the attacks.
The Pope also thanked all those who are seeking to help the people of that country put to such trial, especially the women and children.
“I ask everyone to continue to assist the needy and to pray that dialogue and solidarity will lead to the establishment of a peaceful and fraternal coexistence and offer hope for the future of the country.” “I participate in the suffering of all those who weep for the persons who lost their lives in the suicide attacks last Thursday, and (in the suffering) of those who are seeking help and protection,” Francis said.
