Florida has been in the national spotlight over the ongoing mask row between school officials, parents, and the government. According to BBC, a doctor has been removed from his hospital job amid reports that he offered parent medical letters to circumvent school mask requirements in Florida.

Local school rules require masking unless a medical reason is given. Tallahassee physician Brian Warden was reportedly advertising such medical exemption letters for $50 on a Facebook group for anti-mask parents.

The issue of mask mandates in schools has sparked debates nationwide as the new academic year begins. Dr. Warden’s employer, the Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee, told the BBC that it began the process of removing him from providing services to their patients “immediately” upon learning of his actions. According to updated national guidelines published on Tuesday, overweight and obese should start getting screened for diabetes earlier, at age 35 instead of 40.

The new advice stems from rising rates of both obesity and Type 2 diabetes, and research showing the health benefits of prevention methods and early treatment. Three out of four U.S. adults are overweight or obese, which increases their chances of developing diabetes. Among adults aged 18 and older, 14 percent already have diagnosed diabetes, and 33 percent have pre-diabetes.

The guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an advisory group to the U.S. government, was published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It updates the task force’s 2015 recommendations and says even earlier screening should be considered for overweight or obese American Indians, Black people, Hispanics, and the other groups with disproportionately high diabetes rates.

Screening means blood tests to measure sugar levels and sometimes involve drinking a sugary liquid first. The new guidance suggests that people whose tests are normal could be screened every three years. Type 2-diabetes impairs the body’s ability to use insulin to regulate blood sugar, leading to high levels that can cause heart problems, organ damage, and blindness. Pre-diabetes means higher than normal blood sugar levels that can lead to full-blown diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes incidence has increased in recent years along with obesity rates. A 2001-17 report in the same journal shows the rate nearly doubled in kids aged 10-19, jumping from 34 cases per 100,000 kids to 67 per 100,000.

The task force’s guidance says evidence shows diet and physical activity can prevent or delay diabetes in adults with pre-diabetes. A JAMA editorial says evidence shows that few U.S. adults with pre-diabetes are referred to diabetes prevention or weight loss programs that could help them avoid diabetes and its complications. It calls for a broader range of effective prevention programs that are covered by insurance and accessible to people who need them most.

New York Times reported that Facebook has approached academics and policy experts about forming a commission to advise it on global election-related matters, citing five people with knowledge of the matter, a move that would allow the social network to shift some of its political decision-making to an advisory body.

The proposed commission could decide on matters such as political ads and their viability and concerns around election-related misinformation, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the discussions were confidential. Facebook is expected to announce the commission this fall in preparation for the 2022 midterm elections, they said, though the effort is preliminary and could still fall apart.

Social media companies have grappled in recent years with how to handle world leaders and politicians who violate their guidelines. The commission, if formed, would not be the first time Facebook has set up external groups to help it make major decisions. In 2018, the company created the Oversight Board, a panel that includes former politicians, academics, and policy experts to rule on whether Facebook is right to remove certain content from its platform.

According to APP News, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday inaugurated the country’s first ‘Smart Forest’ in the Rakh Jhok area of Sheikhupura. The prime minister planted a sapling in the forest, which is the first of its kind being equipped with technology sensors and surveillance systems.

Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and senior officials of the Punjab government were present at the event. The Rakh Jhok Forest is a project of Ravi Urban Development Authority covering 24,000 kanals of land.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said the Ravi River Urban Project, besides its environmental benefits, was expected to generate $40 billion in revenue for the country.

“The project will not only prove beneficial for Lahore, but for the entire country in addressing the environmental and financial problems,” he said at the launch of the country’s first-ever ‘Smart Forest’ near Sheikhupura under the Ravi Urban project.

The prime minister said the project would stop the sewage water seep into Punjab’s River Ravi, which ultimately flowed up to the River Indus passing through Sindh. Under the Ravi Urban project, he said, around 10 million trees would be planted beside the construction of three barrages at the river. Filtration plants will ensure the provision of clean water to the public, he added.

He asked Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar to remain undeterred amidst challenges and work towards the timely completion of the project.

Imran Khan termed water scarcity, deforestation, and glacier melting the biggest challenge for the country, which was among the ten most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. He said massive forestation was vital to save the country for the coming generations.

“If we want to hand over a green and clean Pakistan to our next generation, the plantation is the foremost solution,” he said.

The prime minister regretted deforestation in the country over time, terming it disastrous in terms of climate change. He recalled that Lahore, once used to be called as City of Gardens, had turned into a polluted place with pollutants touching hazardous levels.

“Therefore, the Ravi project is not only important for Lahore but for the entire country,” he stressed.

The prime minister said the growth of every plant would be monitored in collaboration with the tech giant Huawei. He said sensors would keep a vigil on the ruthless cutting of trees and expressed confidence that the project would be replicated in other parts of the country.

A one-day series between Pakistan and Afghanistan, scheduled for next month in Sri Lanka, has been postponed until 2022 following the Taliban’s takeover of power in Afghanistan.

The two countries were due to play three ODI matches in early September in Sri Lanka, but the Pakistan Cricket Board said late on Monday that the Afghanistan Cricket Board had requested the series be postponed.

“PCB has accepted ACB’s request to postpone next month’s ODI series due to players’ mental health issues, disruption in flight operations in Kabul, lack of broadcast facilities and increased COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka,” the PCB tweeted.

“Both boards will try to reschedule the series in 2022.”

With commercial flights from Kabul airport yet to resume, media reports said the Afghanistan team had been looking to travel to Pakistan by road and fly to Colombo via Dubai. But the logistical challenges increased after Sri Lanka last week announced a 10-day lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19, as surging infections and deaths overwhelm the island’s health system.

The Taliban have said they would not interfere with men’s cricket in the country; Afghanistan’s biggest sporting success of recent years. The fate of the women’s program, however, remains unclear.

There has been a surge in the creation of short films in Pakistan with many of them proving to be huge hits. Pakistani short film ‘Bhai’ has been selected to premiere at Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The movie has been written and directed by Hamza Bangash and executive produced by Mina Husain of Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL) and Salman Ahmed. It has been co-produced by Taha Sabri of Taskeen and Westbury Group and Carol Noronha.  The creators have cast a differently-abled actor, Ayan Javaid, to play the lead. This is huge for the representation of differently-abled people in Pakistani media.

Bhai is a story of two brothers who go out to celebrate Independence Day at a restaurant. The younger brother, who is autistic, has an episode while he is waiting for his older brother to return with their food. The older brother is watching the struggle, however, from inside the restaurant and he must make a choice: help his brother or ignore him.

Amid the bustle of Karachi on Pakistan’s Independence Day, the tumultuous events portrayed in Hamza Bangash’s bracing, tension-filled drama widen the gulf of understanding between two brothers, Bhai as described on the TIFF’s website.

The film is about the choices we make, shame, trauma, brotherhood, and finding a small sliver of happiness in a brutal world.

“In 2021, for the first time, I’m going to get to experience the festival as a filmmaker,” said director Hamza Bangash, sharing his previous experiences at the festival as a volunteer and an intern.

Hamza expressed his gratitude to the film’s team and wrote, “It’s a film about choti khushiyan [little joys], and about everyday bravery, the kind that Karachiites have in spades.”

The film will be screened at the festival in September 2021. Hoping this is just the start of more Pakistani movies and artists being internationally recognized and appreciated.

According to Gadgets 360, the Apple II manual, a rare collectible inscribed and signed by late Apple founder Steve Jobs in 1980, has been auctioned for a whopping $787,484 on August 19. The buyer is Jim Irsay, the owner of the American football team Indianapolis Colts. Boston-based RR Auction sold the 41-year-old Apple II Reference Manual last week. The manual, which ran into 196 pages, was inscribed and signed opposite the ‘Table of Contents’ in blue ink by Jobs and Apple’s former angel investor and second CEO, Mike Mark Kula. The manual contains technical details of Apple II’s architecture and operation.

Jobs had written, “Julian, your generation is the first to grow up with computers. Go change the world! Steven Jobs, 1980.”

He referred to Julian Brewer, whose father Michael negotiated exclusive distribution rights for Apple in the UK in 1979.

In a note on its website, RR Auction stated that “Jobs’ inscription, penned in the year of Apple’s stock market flotation, powerfully conveys his grand ambition and vision for the future of Apple Computer, Inc. and personal computing as a whole”. It adds that when Jobs and Mark Kula signed the Apple II manual, they were in the UK to promote the company.

The note further states that the manual was “in fine condition, with a few small stains on the front cover”.

Brewer, who was a teenager when Jobs signed the manual, was quoted as saying by RR Auction, “I was sitting in my bedroom writing games on my Apple II when dad called me down to meet some guests. To my amazement, it was Steve Jobs and Mike Mark Kula. I had the manual with me and only later understood how rare it was for Jobs to sign anything, let alone to write an inscription like this. He got on well with dad, so I feel the inscription was made with care.”

While expressing what the Apple II manual meant for him, Irsay said in a statement provided to the auction house that Jobs was among the “most innovative minds of the past two centuries.”

Normally Zoom is used to teach and meet in the global context of the epidemic, but many have described it as an exhausting experience. In response, Facebook has developed a virtual reality app that allows you to chat with friends in a more realistic way.

According to AP News, Facebook is trying to pull in workplace users with a new virtual-reality meetings app called Horizon Workrooms. However, it does require a 300 Dollars VR headset, the most popular of which is the widely used Oculus Quest 2. People without a headset can join with a video call. Up to 50 people can be on the call, but only 16 can be in the VR space with avatars. For the full VR experience, users need to have a Facebook account.

While entering the Horizon workroom, you see cartoon characters of different people sitting around a table in a room, which gives a sense of the real scene. With this app, you can also choose different outfits, avatars, and clothes. People wearing headsets will move their fingers and hands, so their digital avatar will also move their hands and fingers. In addition, the lips of their digital characters will also move whenever they speak. The virtual conference also has a whiteboard where you can share presentations and writings with others.

Facebook aims to enable people to use Oculus for fun as well as serious activities and to have a unique virtual dating experience.

“We’ve been using the app internally for over a year now, but 18 months of epidemics and lockdowns have shown that such platforms are the best for a meeting,” said Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Realty Labs

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a fan of the “metaverse,” a vague concept that encompasses augmented and virtual reality with new ways of connecting. He expects it to be the next stage of how people experience the internet.

Virtual reality has never really taken off, even during the pandemic, when remote work became the norm for millions of office workers and made the videoconferencing service Zoom a household name.

On the other hand, Facebook staff have said that they can present themselves in a more confident way in the Horizon workroom than in Zoom, and it is much easier to talk to each other thanks to virtual characters.

  • Kabul, Afghanistan,

The UK Ministry of Defense has said in a statement on Sunday that “conditions on the ground remain extremely challenging but we are doing everything we can to manage the situation as safely and securely as possible”.

Mod added: “Our sincere thoughts are with the families of the seven Afghan civilians who have sadly died in crowds in Kabul.”

A panicked crush of people trying to enter Kabul’s international airport killed seven Afghan civilians in the crowds, the British military said on Sunday, showing the danger still posed to those trying to flee the Taliban’s takeover of the country.

The deaths come as a new, perceived threat from the Islamic State group affiliate in Afghanistan has seen US military planes do rapid, diving combat landings at the airport surrounded by Taliban fighters. Other aircraft have shot off flares on take-off, an effort to confuse possible heat-seeking missiles targeting the planes.

The US Embassy issued a new security warning on Saturday telling citizens not to travel to the Kabul airport without US government representative instruction. Officials declined to provide more specifics about the IS threat but described it as significant. They said there have been no confirmed attacks as yet by the militants, who have battled the Taliban in the past.

On Sunday, the British military acknowledged the seven deaths of civilians in the crowds in Kabul. There have been stampedes and crushing injuries in the crowds, especially as Taliban fighters fire into the air to drive away those desperate to get on any flight out of the country.

The United States was to blame for the chaos at Kabul’s airport as thousands of Afghans clamored to be evacuated, a senior Taliban official said Sunday.

According to a Taliban official, Amir Khan Mutaqi, “America, with all its power and facilities has failed to bring order to the airport. There is peace and calm all over the country, but there is chaos only at Kabul airport”.

Thousands rushed the airport last Monday in chaos that saw the US try to clear off the runway with low-flying attack helicopters. Several Afghans plunged to their deaths while hanging off the side of a US military cargo plane. It’s been difficult to know the full scale of the deaths and injuries from the chaos.
