  • New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced the launch of the New York City Government WhatsApp Channel, available in both English and Spanish, to expand and enhance direct communication between the Adams administration and New Yorkers via one of the top-five most used apps in the world. Beginning today, Friday, October 27, 2023, the Channel will provide subscribers with updates directly from the Adams administration, information about city services, and content about New York City’s communities, activities, and culture.

WhatsApp is used by 2.4 billion people worldwide and more than 98 million people in the United States, making it a key communication platform for immigrant and international communities within New York City, where approximately 40 percent of the population was born outside of the United States. WhatsApp introduced “Channels” this summer as a new product, and it’s already being used by private companies, celebrities, sports teams, and newspapers around the world to reach tens of millions of people.

“Our administration is ‘Getting Stuff Done,’ and we want to tell New Yorkers what we are doing and how it can improve their quality of life,” said Mayor Adams.

“Our administration is committed to reaching all communities that call New York City home, including immigrant and international communities who already use WhatsApp daily to communicate daily. This outreach in English and Spanish is one more way we’re making sure New Yorkers know what their government is doing for them and how to access services, engage in events, and learn about great things happening in New York City.”

“This administration is making communication with all New Yorkers a top priority, so we’re using one of the most popular communication tools in the world to get it done,” said Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy. “Just like I communicate with friends and family over WhatsApp, so do millions of other New Yorkers, and we’re excited to test out this new platform to share so much of how our city continues to deliver for New Yorkers every day. From direct e-mailing via the ‘Hear From Eric’ to SMS texting via ‘Text With Eric’ to the ‘Get Stuff Done-cast’ podcast and ‘Hear From The Mayor’ monthly call-in radio show, we are constantly adding new ways to reach New Yorkers and get their feedback.”

“In order to build stronger connections with the people we serve, we have to go directly to where New Yorkers stay connected with family and friends,” said Chief Technology Officer Matthew Fraser.

“Mayor Adams’ new WhatsApp Channel is another important step in our continuing efforts to democratize access to information and raise awareness of all the impactful work this administration is getting done on behalf of New Yorkers.”

Today’s announcement builds on a series of actions taken to fulfill Mayor Adams’ vision of making this administration the most accessible in the city’s history. In August, Mayor Adams launched “Text with Eric” an SMS-based communication program to converse one-on-one with New Yorkers about anything they want to discuss. In July, Mayor Adams launched “Hear from the Mayor” a live, call-in radio show where New Yorkers can regularly call in and discuss issues they care about with the mayor. In January, Mayor Adams launched both “Hear from Eric,” an email-based direct communications program designed to reach New Yorkers where they are about local issues and priorities, as well as the “Get Stuff Done-Cast,” a podcast where he highlights the amazing things New Yorkers from all walks of life are doing to push New York City forward every day. Additionally, in May, Mayor Adams kicked off “Talk with Eric,” the administration’s second series of at least nine community town halls following last year’s successful series of eight “Community Conversations on Public Safety.”

  • ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi said on Friday that no power on earth could crush the Kashmiris freedom movement, who were struggling for the right to self-determination promised by none other than the United Nations in its several resolutions, according to APP.

Addressing the participants of a rally organized here marking October 27, the black day to protest against Indian illegal occupation of the then princely state in 1947.

The minister said that the history of oppression of the Kashmiri people spanned over centuries.

He said that on this day in 1947, India landed its troops in the valley in violation of international law.

He lamented the champions of human rights and democracy, who raise their voice against any injustice across the world were silent over the Kashmiri genocide at the hands of Indian occupation forces.

Murtaza Solangi opined despite the increasing repression, the desire for freedom has increased among Kashmiris manifold.

With the increase in tyranny and repression, the spirit of freedom among Kashmiris has got more momentum, he maintained.

The minister said that India had not only grossly violated UN Security Council resolutions but also it violated its own constitution by refusing to grant the right to self-determination to the Kashmiri masses.

The minister said for durable peace in the world was imperative to ensure just solution of Kashmir disputes.

  • UNITED NATIONS: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) group at the United Nations Thursday lashed out at the “disrespectful and intimidating” remarks recently made by top Israeli diplomats against UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, saying the 57-member body has “full confidence” in his leadership.

Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan Tuesday accused the UN chief of “justifying terrorism” in his statement at Tuesday’s Security Council meeting on Gaza, and called for his immediate resignation. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen endorsed his envoy’s remarks.

Guterres had said that although nothing could justify the “appalling” attacks by Hamas of 7 October which triggered the siege and bombardment of Gaza, it was important to recognize they “did not happen in a vacuum” and did not justify the collective punishment of Palestinians.

On Wednesday, the secretary-general rejected “misrepresentations” of his statement, saying he was shocked by Israeli diplomats’ “false” claims.

In a statement, initiated by Pakistan, the OIC group termed the Israeli remarks as an “act of political coercion against the UN and its Secretary-General.”

It expressed appreciation for the Secretary-General and the role of United Nations agencies in drawing the attention of the international community towards the “criminal Israeli attacks” on civilians by the Israeli occupation forces, and for providing humanitarian supplies to Gaza’s besieged people.

The Secretary General’s remarks, the statement said, were consistent with his duties and responsibilities under international law, international humanitarian law, and the Charter and resolutions of the United Nations. “

“We express our full confidence in the Secretary-General and reaffirm our support for his efforts to promote peace and security and uphold the UN Charter,” the statement added.

  • UNITED NATIONS: China and Russia vetoed a U.S. resolution at the U.N. Security Council that would have condemned Hamas, called for the release of hostages in Gaza and allowed for “humanitarian pauses” in the raging Israel-Palestine conflict to aid civilians.

Ten members voted for the U.S. text in the 15-member Council, 3 against (China, Russia and the United Arab Emirates), with Brazil and Mozambique abstaining, according to APP.

Negative vote from any one of the five permanent members of the Council stops action on any measure put before it. The permanent members are :China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

“The (US) draft does not reflect the world’s strongest calls for a ceasefire, an end to the fighting, and it does not help resolve the issue,” China’s U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun told the council after the vote.
“At this moment, ceasefire is not just a diplomatic term. It means the life and death of many civilians,” the Chinese envoy said.

Russia’s U.N. ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, also said the U.S. measure did not call for a cease-fire in the raging conflict nor bar Israel from its ground operations in Gaza.

“The bloodshed is ongoing, the number of civilian causalities in now in the thousands [and] millions are displaced,” he said, urging a “hard think about the shocking figures.”

He recalled the earlier Russian proposal, a depoliticized resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire, which unfortunately was not supported by most members of the Council.

“We did listen to all of you,” U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Council after the double veto, which she described as disappointing. “Though today’s vote was a setback, we must not be deterred.”

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has all along called for a humanitarian ceasefire, a call Israel and its closest ally, the U.S., do not support, as the Tel Aviv regime pushes ahead to achieve its objective to completely destroy Hamas.

UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward said through the US proposal, the Council could have condemned Hamas’ attacks. At the same time, she said, Russia’s draft failed to recognize Israel’s right to self-defence.

The UAE Ambassador, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, said “The stakes are too high” and the Council “must step up”.

“We know what the most pressing humanitarian needs are,” she said, adding that these include a humanitarian ceasefire, release of all hostages, humanitarian access, fuel, water, and adherence to international humanitarian law.

Israel’s Ambassador Gilad Erdin argued that his country continues to be attacked, from north and south, and asked Council members how they would feel if faced with this reality.

“You would feel there is a blatant double standard,” he claimed, “and that the Council isn’t taking even the most basic steps anyone with a slight moral compass should take. This is precisely how the State of Israel feels right now.”

In a Security Council debate on Tuesday, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram condemned the Israeli aggression against Gaza, and backed the call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, warning that further massive civilian casualties in the Palestinian enclave could trigger a “wider and more dangerous” conflict.

Both Wednesday’s drafts condemned the terror attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians of 7 October and urged action to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, where fuel is due to run out for hospitals and other crucial services, in a matter of hours, according to UN agencies on the ground.

Key differences in the text included a specific mention in the US-backed proposal of States’ inherent right to self defence, and a call in the Russian-led one for the immediate cancellation by Israeli forces of the evacuation order for civilians to head into southern Gaza.

In the wake of the Security Council deadlock, the 193-member U.N. General Assembly will vote on Friday on a draft resolution put forward by Arab states that calls for a ceasefire. No country holds a veto in the General Assembly, but its resolutions are non-binding, although they carry political weight.

  • KARACHI: Caretaker Minister for Interior, Sarfraz Bugti on Thursday gave an unwavering message that the government would not compromise on repatriation of illegal immigrants in Pakistan after the deadline ending on October 31st.

In a stern and resolute press conference, as reported by APP,  the interior minister said that according to the repatriation plan, all provincial governments, including the government in federal capital, Gilgit Baltistan and special areas, “Holding Centers” would be established to retain all illegal immigrants.

Females, children and senior citizens would be given special care in those holding centers and the government will ensure provision of food, security and medical care for all detained in those centers, said the minister.

He said that no one would be sent to jail but to their holding centers and those who have no documents to stay would be deported from the centers to their respective countries after necessary documentation.

The minster said that the illegal immigrants would only be allowed to take Rs. 50,000 cash per family with them however if they wished to take more money to their country, they would have to use banking channel.

The government will take strict action against local Pakistanis who will facilitate illegal foreigners in any shape, warned the misters adding that this act would be a violation of law.

He said, NADRA is collecting data of those involved in theft by making fake ID cards and stern action would be taken against those officials. The government will also confiscate such properties purchased on fake ID cards, said the minister.

He said the state has complete data of all illegal immigrants which was collected through geo fencing.

The state knows their whereabouts whether they are living in villages or metropolitan cities therefore, the government once again appeal to them to voluntarily return to their countries otherwise they will face hardships when arrested by the government agencies.

Bugti said that the government would welcome the investors in Pakistan who will come along with legal visa and required documents but those who were living illegally and had established businesses will sent back with full force and their business will be confiscated.

  • NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams has celebrated a major milestone of 5,000 new registered nurses (RNs) trained through the Citywide Nurse Residency Program since its launch in 2019, putting thousands of New Yorkers on the path to fulfilling, family-sustaining careers.

As the nation’s first city-led nurse residency consortium, the program offers on-the-job training and other support to recently graduated, newly hired RNs. It has been implemented at over 28 healthcare facilities across the city and supported hospitals in training and retaining nurses — saving them millions of dollars — while also helping new nurses succeed in their early careers. The program has helped average nurse retention exceed 96 percent year to date at participating NYC Health + Hospitals (H+H) campuses, far surpassing the national average of 84 percent.

This milestone marks the first stop on Mayor Adams’ “Working People’s Tour,” continuing to create jobs and power New York City’s economic recovery after the city set an all-time record with 4.7 million total jobs, recovering all of the nearly 1 million jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program’s success also delivers on a delivering on a major health care component of Mayor Adams’ “Working People’s Agenda” to support 30,000 current and aspiring nurses over the next five years as they enter the nursing workforce, stay in the profession, and climb the career ladder.

“As we continue to grapple with effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re doing everything we can to bolster our health care system, and that starts with supporting the backbone of the industry: our nurses,” said Mayor Adams. “By providing hospitals with the resources they need to train and retain their nursing staff, our Citywide Nurse Residency Program has allowed us to make significant strides in improving health care for New Yorkers and making New York City work for working people. As we saw in 2020, nurses are essential to keeping New Yorkers healthy, and our investment to help nurses go from the classrooms to a hospital room will help keep New Yorkers healthy and prepared for the future.”

“Nurses are often the first people you see and one of the last with whom you interact when visiting the hospital or an outpatient setting,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Isom. “This residency program provides an important structure to support, attract, and retain the city’s nurses. Thank you to all our partners inside and outside government that make this work possible, and thank you to New York City’s nurses for supporting your fellow New Yorkers each and every day.”

“Nurses are the lifeblood of our hospital system. They helped restore and keep many more New Yorkers healthy and safe during one of the most perilous moments in our city’s history,” said Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer. “As we celebrate recovering all jobs lost to the pandemic, there is no time more important to double down on our investments in the city’s human capital. The Citywide Nurse Residency program demonstrates the Adams administration’s commitment to this investment and to connecting New Yorkers to family-sustaining careers. I am honored to congratulate the 5,000-plus participants of the Citywide Nurse Residency program on a job well done.”

“In recent years, we have witnessed the extraordinary resilience of New York City nurses and the absolutely critical role they play in the well-being of New Yorkers and our city. The Citywide Nurse Residency Program not only values our nurses’ grit and tenacity, but also ensures supporting working nurses and their seamless transition from years of training into the workplace,” said Mayor’s Office of Talent and Workforce Development Executive Director Abby Jo Sigal. “Today’s milestone marking over 5,000 nurse residents to date shows how invested the city and this administration are in the health of New Yorkers, supporting our nurses and essential workers, and strengthening our city’s economy.”

First-year retention of newly graduated nurses has been a historical challenge for health care systems across the country — only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic — and residencies are a recognized best practice for improving nurse retention. Over 1,700 nurses in the 18 participating H+H campuses have completed the program since its launch, and the retention rate for nurses at these locations has increased by over 40 percent and surpassed the national average year to date. By reducing turnover rates and decreasing the costs associated with hiring and training new nurses, the program has saved private and public hospitals tens of millions of dollars.

An initiative of the New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare and the Mayor’s Office of Talent and Workforce Development, and offered in partnership with the Greater New York Hospital Association, the Citywide Nurse Residency Program is proven to increase worker confidence, professional satisfaction, and retention. Stable, well-trained nursing professionals  contribute to better patient care and reduce hospitals’ costs associated with recruitment, particularly in a time of acute nursing shortages after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program is designed to last one year, consisting of monthly seminars and reflection time for a small cohort of first-time nurses from the same hospital — translating to better professional and emotional outcomes. The program also includes structured flexibility for hospitals to reinforce new nurses’ academic training and to customize training to a facility’s unique operational and cultural needs.

“The visionary Citywide Nurse Residency Program supported by the Adams administration and implemented by NYC Health + Hospitals has had an immense and immediate impact on nurse recruitment and retention, while at the same time saving our health system more than $42 million in recruitment cost avoidance,” said Natalia Cineas, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, senior vice president and chief nursing executive, NYC Health + Hospitals. “Nursing is one of the most rewarding and satisfying of all professions, but we recognize that it also can be demanding and stressful for those just emerging from nursing school. Nurse residency programs are a nationally recognized best practice for retaining nurses, and our pioneering program provides the mentorship and professional practice training that newly graduated nurses need to be able to confidently and competently be responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of our patients.”

“Through thick and thin, New York City depends on our almost 80,000 registered nurses and hundreds of thousands of other health care professionals who show up for their patients every single day,” said Daniel Liss, senior advisor, Mayor’s Office of Talent and Workforce Development, Industry Partnerships; and executive director, New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare. “We are incredibly proud of the early career nurses who participate in this program and the health care leaders across the city who make it a success — as the impact they make on our communities is immense. The Adams administration has made it a clear priority to invest in our city’s health care sector and its workforce, and the Citywide Nurse Residency Program is a great example of how the public and private sectors can work together to magnify our positive impact.”

“Health care is a human right, but not when there are not enough nurses to care for patients,” said New York City Council Member Lynn Schulman, chair, Committee on Health. “That is why the Citywide Nurse Residency Program, which provides career opportunities for New Yorkers and gives patients the essential care they need, is such a vital program. Today’s milestone of 5,000 newly registered nurses puts the city in the forefront of public health care.  Thank you to Mayor Eric Adams for initiating this important endeavor and for his stalwart commitment to the health outcomes of all who live, work and visit here.”

“The hospital community is grateful to New York City for developing the Citywide Nurse Residency Program, and to Mayor Adams for his strong continued support of it,” said Kenneth Raske, president, Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA). “This important program helps new graduate nurses transition to hospital-based nursing across 28 hospitals and has vastly improved nurses’ confidence, skill, and retention. GNYHA applauds the Citywide Nurse Residency Program’s positive impact on early career nurses and is proud to have been a part of its development.”

“Nurses are the backbone of every hospital, not only taking care of patients’ needs but also acting as liaison between the patients and the doctors,” said Gloria Middleton, president, Communication Workers of America Local 1180. “With a huge nurse staffing shortage in New York and nationwide, it is imperative that we continue to train and recruit as many new nurses as possible in order to have safe staffing levels at every hospital. We also need to ensure that all nurses are adequately compensated for the invaluable work they do every day to save lives and provide quality care to patients.”

“Nurses are the backbone of patient care. We are thrilled to be part of the Citywide Nurse Residency Program, which will support this essential profession,” said Ken Gibbs, president and CEO, Maimonides Health. “This program provides invaluable career experience for nurse graduates, positioning them for success.”

“Health care is one of the largest industries in New York and the retention of newly graduated nurses is critical to meeting employer demand,” said Kiersten Barnet, executive director, New York Jobs CEO Council. “The residencies offered by this program help nurses successfully transition into good jobs and employers attract and retain the talent they need. The Jobs Council looks forward to continuing to partner with the Mayor’s Office, Greater New York Hospital Assocation, and New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare to bring more programs like this to life.”

“By investing in nurse residency programs, we invest in the health and well-being of our community,” said Beth Oliver, DNP, RN, FAAN, chief nurse executive, senior vice president, Mount Sinai Health System Cardiac Services. “Nurses are the heart of health care, and through this program, we ensure that this heart beats with compassion, expertise, and resilience. As we celebrate reaching over 5,000 early career nurses, we’re not just celebrating numbers, but the lives they will touch and the difference they will make.”

“I firmly believe the nurse residency program shaped me into the nurse I am today,” said Shari Lazar, RN, OBH, Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center. “The support and training I received throughout that first year taught me how to react properly and gave me the confidence to stand on my own in any situation.  It gave me the skills and fine-tuned my critical thinking to be a team player and react calmly in all medical emergencies no matter what comes my way. I am honored now to take those valuable lessons and share them with the new nurses that I am grateful to be training.”

“The Citywide Nurse Residency Program exemplifies our city’s unwavering dedication to supporting our health care workforce and improving patient care for every New Yorker,” said Wilhelmina Manzano, MA, RN, NEA-BC, group senior vice president and chief nursing executive, NewYork-Presbyterian. “We are proud to collaborate with this outstanding program and support new graduate nurses as they develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.”

“We are honored to celebrate with the New York City Mayor’s Office and the New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare to recognize 5,000 nurses who completed the Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program™. Recognizing the unwavering commitment and ongoing pursuit of knowledge by these vital health care professionals is a noteworthy accomplishment, celebrating their dedication to delivering optimal patient care,” said Evy Olson, MSN, MBA, RN, vice president, Nursing Programs at Vizient. “Nurse residency programs are critical in helping newly licensed nurses transition into practice effectively, ultimately contributing to the well-being of the community, the health care organization, and the patients under their care.”

“The Nurse Residency Program provided structured support and opportunities for me as a new nurse,” said Wendy Zhao, MSN, staff nurse, at NYC Health + Hospitals, South Brooklyn Health and graduate of the Citywide Nurse Residency Program. “My team’s project poster won first place at the 2022 American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet and Pathway to Excellence Conference. I entered the residency program as an associate’s degree nurse, and I emerged from it with my bachelor’s degree; this past summer, I completed my master’s degree in Nursing Education, receiving top nursing honors from the College of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. The early encouragement and lessons in evidence-based practice and research from the residency program were major contributors to my success.”

  • NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams today was joined by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO Andrew Kimball, Vornado Realty Trust, Hudson Pacific Properties, Blackstone, elected officials, and community leaders to break ground on Sunset Pier 94 Studios — a first-of-its-kind film and TV campus coming to Manhattan’s West Side.

Leveraging $350 million in private investment, the project is expected to create more than 1,700 jobs, including more than 1,300 construction jobs, add $6.4 billion to the local economy over the next 30 years, as well as adding new public restrooms, significant public space and bike safety improvements, and a new workforce development program to connect New Yorkers. The start of construction represents major progress on a site sitting vacant, where efforts to advance a project creating jobs and public open space have stalled for more than a decade.

The start of construction on Sunset Pier 94 Studios marks a major stop on Mayor Adams’ “Working People’s Tour,” continuing to create jobs and power New York City’s economic recovery after the city set an all-time job record with 4.7 million total jobs, recovering the nearly 1 million jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project at Pier 94 also delivers on key initiatives in Mayor Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s “Making New York Work for Everyone” action plan, which recommended new investments to build on the city’s status as a hub for film and TV — driving both the city’s economy and its cultural and creative identity.

“New York City didn’t set an all-time jobs record by accident — we did it by strategically protecting public safety, investing in public space, and supporting and delivering for working people. This project at Pier 94 will do all three, and we are excited to bring our ‘Working People’s Tour’ to the West Side,” said Mayor Adams. “Sunset Pier 94 Studios will bring a major private investment to this public asset, activating this long-vacant space to create good-paying jobs, vibrant public space, and exactly the amenities this community has been asking for.”

“After breaking New York City’s all-time record for jobs, our administration forges ahead to ensure our economy remains the most competitive in the world and is accessible to all New Yorkers. Sunset Pier 94 Studios is part of our inclusive growth strategy and will cement New York City as the capital of world-class film and television production,” said Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer. “I want to thank NYCEDC, Vornado, Hudson Pacific, and Blackstone for working quickly to reach this major milestone.”

“It was only a few months ago that we announced this exciting new public-private partnership that’s going to bring jobs and a huge economic boon to the film and television industry here in New York City, and we are already breaking ground,” said NYCEDC President and CEO Kimball. “This is a huge milestone for the city and all our partners, and we are looking forward to cutting the ribbon on Manhattan’s first film, television, and content production facility, along with the significant improvements to the public realm and waterfront access on the West Side of Manhattan.”

“Congratulations to NYCEDC and partners on today’s milestone groundbreaking of the Sunset Pier 94 Studios, which is poised to become a major contributor to New York City’s film and television production industry,” said Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Pat Swinney Kaufman. “With an economic impact of $82 billion and a role in supporting 185,000 jobs, it is easy to say that when our city’s film and television industry thrives, New York City thrives. Welcome Sunset Pier 94!”

Sunset Pier 94 Studios will be a first-of-its-kind space, home to state-of-the-art film, television, and content production technology that will make New York City even more competitive with other cities. Sunset Pier 94 will also provide impressive amenities for all New Yorkers to enjoy, including new public restrooms for Hudson River Park, an 1,850-square-foot community amenity space, 25,000 square feet of waterfront open space on the pier, and safety improvements to the existing greenway. There will also be a program to support workforce development and training programs to connect residents to opportunities in film, television, commercial and other media production.

The project represents a total investment of approximately $350 million from Vornado, Hudson Pacific, and Blackstone. The project construction will utilize $183 million in construction financing led by RBC with expected completion by the end of 2025.

New York City’s film and TV industry has grown significantly over the last decade, supporting 185,000 jobs, generating over $18 billion in wages, and contributing more than $82 billion in economic impact. After struggling during the pandemic, the city’s arts and entertainment sector continues to show positive momentum in its jobs recovery — growing nearly 16 percent between May 2022 and May 2023 and recovering nearly 46,000 jobs since the start of the pandemic. The new Writers Guild of America labor contract, reached in September, represents continued progress for the sector, with a new contract for the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists hopefully soon to follow.

“The swift commencement of construction on Sunset Pier 94 Studios is representative of the strength of this public-private partnership and the demand we anticipate for the first purpose-built studio facility in Manhattan,” said Victor Coleman, chairman and CEO, Hudson Pacific Properties. “We know the local entertainment industry is hungry for a modern, ideally located production facility and we look forward to delivering and operating this unique project to meet those needs.”

“Today, alongside our partners, we celebrate breaking ground at Sunset Pier 94 Studios, which will further cement New York City as a leading market in content creation,” said Nadeem Meghji, head of real estate Americas, Blackstone. “We look forward to the productions this project will enable, the jobs it will create, and the benefit it will have on the surrounding area — a win-win-win.”

“Sunset Pier 94 Studios is a tremendous project for New York City that will generate new jobs, while further beautifying the Hudson River waterfront,” said Michael Franco, president and chief financial officer, Vornado Realty Trust. “Our collective willingness and ability to move forward despite the challenging financial markets is a testament to our confidence in the promise of creating such a dynamic new product in Manhattan.”

“Sunset Pier 94 represents a significant investment in New York City’s film and television industry and one of the most important public amenities in Manhattan, the Hudson River Park,” said New York State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal. “I’m grateful to NYCEDC, Vornado Realty Trust, Hudson Pacific Properties, and Blackstone for this innovative collaboration that will both create jobs and improvements to the park, as well as workforce development and training programs to help connect our local residents to opportunities in film and TV.”

“Sunset Pier 94 Studios heralds a new era for artistic production in our borough. This investment in Manhattan as a hub of the entertainment industry and a talented workforce will undoubtedly have a positive impact on our economy,” said Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine. “The public benefits and workforce development initiatives that will be part of this project demonstrate the Sunset Pier 94 Studio’s team commitment to everyday New Yorkers. I look forward to seeing this project come online.”

“Manhattan Community Board 4 applauds the transformation of Pier 94,” said Jeffrey LeFrancois, chair, Manhattan Community Board 4. “The project will be a boon for film and television production and brings great improvements to Pier 94 for the public: additional space to Hudson River Park’s Clinton Cove, restrooms, and significant improvements for cyclists and pedestrians. It took a long time to get where we are, and the community looks forward to a speedy, efficient, and effective construction process.”

Well-known Pakistani-American businessman and former chairman of Pakistan-American Business Forum, Hafeez Khan, while addressing the press conference, said that we strongly condemn the decision of Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister to remove Tahir Javed as SAPMhis. Everyone knows that Tahir Javed has been rendering valuable services not only to the Pakistani community but also to Pakistan for a long time in America.

Board of Trustee Pakistan Society of North Texas Barkat Basria said that Tahir Javed is not only a very hardworking person but he has always supported us in various events.

The General Secretary of the Pakistan Society of North Texas said that Pakistan’s national security agencies should have investigated Tahir Javed before issuing this notification.

Chairman Pakistan-American Business Forum Waqar Khan said that Tahir Javed has done valuable services for Pakistan, which should not have happened to him on the basis of caste and the elements behind it should be punished.

The participants of the press conference said that the notification of the appointment of Tahir Javed was withdrawn just by justifying the baseless propaganda made on social media. In addition, the government also awarded him with a national award. But the notification of his appointment was withdrawn on the basis of mere allegations without any solid reason.

We strongly condemn this and have demanded the Pakistan Army chief to investigate the matter as this action has caused serious concern not only in the Pakistani business circles in the US, but also in the community.

  • By: Eric Adams, New York City Mayor

New York: Less than two years ago, I was sworn in as the 110th mayor of New York City. Our city was still reeling from the devastation of a global pandemic. Commercial neighborhoods and office buildings were deserted. Headlines questioned the future of New York City.

But I knew then what every New Yorker has always known: this city would be back.

And right now, that comeback is official: We have regained the nearly one million private sector jobs that were lost during COVID-19, and New York City has more total jobs than EVER before in our city’s history, totaling 4,709,400 million jobs. Not just private sector jobs. Total jobs. Ands more than 280,500 of those jobs were created since the beginning of this administration.

This is more than just a recovery, and I am proud to say we got there ahead of schedule. Before we took office, experts were projecting the city wouldn’t regain pre-pandemic job levels until 2025, but this is the “Get Stuff Done” administration. And we got it done in 22 months.

Our plan was straightforward: Protect public safety, invest in public spaces, and support working people, or as we have been calling it, the “Triangle Offense.”

As I have said for so long, public safety is the prerequisite to prosperity.

It is what I campaigned on, what I was elected to do, and what we have delivered for New Yorkers.

That is why we took immediate action and invested $171 million in our Subway Safety Plan; took action on gun violence, car theft, and retail crime; and boosted enforcement of quality of life and criminal offenses alike.

This simple equation — jobs are up, crime is down, and every day we are delivering for working people — is the foundation of everything else we want to accomplish moving forward.

And the results speak for themselves: Riders are back on our transit system heading back to work, and New Yorkers are safer — and feel safer — and it makes all the difference.

We are embarking on the most ambitious housing effort in generations, investing in sustainability and resiliency projects across the five broughs, and making transformative changes in how we keep our city clean.

We are also delivering billions into the pockets of working people across the city, but when it comes to lifting up working people, we are going to go even further.

Too many people have been left out of this recovery. Black unemployment is too high. Our wealth gap is too wide. Equity remains a serious issue in communities of color across the board.

We must build a fairer, more inclusive economy. And we are going to start with a “Working People’s Tour” of the five boroughs — one that highlights the New Yorkers powering our recovery, introduces new economic solutions, and allows us to hear directly from those who are still lacking access to good jobs. We will create new interventions to help boost growth and build on-ramps to opportunity across the five boroughs because all New Yorkers must share in our city’s prosperity, no matter what line of work they are in or what borough they hail from.

New York City has a history of coming back stronger no matter how tough things get. Going forward, we are going to make sure that every New Yorker can share in our city’s legendary opportunity and prosperity as well.

  • NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced that the City has set a record high for the total number of both public and private sector jobs in city history, with 4,709,400 total jobs.

According to new data released by the New York State Department of Labor, with this milestone, the city has regained all of the 946,000 private sector jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic — surpassing the previous record of 4,702,800 total jobs set in January 2020 — and marked a new phase in its economic recovery.

Just 22 months into Mayor Adams’ tenure, the landmark moment in New York City’s recovery comes more than a year ahead of Independent Budget Office estimates and just 17 months after the administration released its “Rebuild, Renew, Reinvent: A Blueprint for New York City’s Economic Recovery.” New Yorkers interested in taking the next step in their career through a new job, training, or education can visit the city’s Jobs Ready NYC website.

“In the earliest days of this administration, our team was laser-focused on two connected goals: making New York City safer and accelerating our economic recovery. Today, not only do we continue to be the safest big city in America with overall crime continuing to trend down, but we have also fully recovered from a pandemic that left many counting New York City out by setting an all-time record for total jobs in the five boroughs — an achievement once predicted to take until 2025 or later,” said Mayor Adams.

“This was no accident. It was the result of smart investments in public safety, a dedication to our public spaces and streetscapes, policies to allow businesses to grow, a new approach to workforce and talent development, and an unwavering commitment to the working people of this city. But our work will never be complete until these employment opportunities are shared equitably by New Yorkers in every community.

“This is a watershed moment for the city,” said Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer. “Mayor Adams’ economic agenda has powered an historic economic recovery, and we have now recovered the nearly 1 million private sector jobs that were lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sara Syed, executive director of the Civic Engagement Commission, while addressing the audience, said that voters should know what their elected representatives want to do.

On this occasion, the Chief Democracy Officer in the city government, Kathleen Daniel, provided the participants with the necessary information regarding the election and the ballot paper to be held in the next month of November.

  • By: Eric Adams, Mayor New York City

New York: So much of New York City’s history was about changing the natural environment – cutting it down, clearing it out, paving it over. But going forward, we know that the future is about working with nature, building a greener, cleaner, safer city for all. From parks and playgrounds to streets, sidewalks, bike lanes and even beaches, our Administration is committed to investing in the quality and cleanliness of our public spaces all across the five boroughs.

This past week, we announced two major initiatives that will transform what it feels like be outside in New York City: A historic expansion of our greenway network, and an ambitious citywide trash containerization effort that will revolutionize the way we keep our streets clean.

For far too long, New Yorkers in the outer boroughs have not had the same level of access to bike lanes and greenways that people in Manhattan have, and our Administration is determined to change that.

That is why we have announced a historic expansion of New York City’s greenway corridors in our outer boroughs. We will be adding over 60 miles of bikeways and walkways that will connect every corner of our city with new transportation options and transform the ways New Yorkers live, work, and get around.

These greenways will ultimately cover 16 miles of Queens waterfront, connect Coney Island to Highland Park and Randall’s Island Park to SUNY Maritime, as well as linking the Goethals Bridge to the Verrazzano on Staten Island. It will also connect the Spring Creek Park to Brookville Park in Southern Queens and JFK Airport.

This expansion of our existing greenway network will begin with a collaborative, community-driven process – so that every New Yorker can have a say in the future of our city. And it will build on the improvements we are already making in cycling infrastructure all over our city, including double-wide bike lanes on Third and Tenth Avenues in Manhattan, new protected bike infrastructure in the Bronx on Soundview and Lafayette Avenues; the longest-ever protected bike lanes in East New York, and the expansion of our protected bike lane network in Long Island City.

Cycling ridership in New York City has reached an all-time high, with 2 million annual trips taken by bike this year. We want to make sure people who want to ride can get around this city safely and smoothly.

We also want to make sure that our city streets are as clean as possible – and that means changing the way to put out and pick up our trash.

Earlier this year, we mandated later set out times for residential trash pickup, and beginning in 2024, we will be implementing a citywide containerization program that will get trash bags off the streets and into specially designed wheelie bins. No more piles of black bags that impede sidewalks and attract rats – we are taking our trash directly into the future. This program is modeled after systems that have been successfully implemented in so many global cities – and will now improve life in our city, too.

More bikes, more paths, more parks – and less trash and garbage. That is what we want for our city – and what our administration is working hard to deliver. Working together, we can clear the way to a more equitable, beautiful, and connected city

Addressing a news conference along with Minister for Privatization Fawad Hassan Fawad, he said the forum strongly condemned Israel’s bombardment, particularly targeting civil population in Gaza besides expressing concern over the volatile situation, stemming from Israel’s illegal occupation, oppression of Palestinians for decades, and blatant violations of United Nations Security Council Resolutions in this regard.

The Federal Cabinet stressed that the issue of Palestine should be resolved in accordance with relevant UNSC resolution, he said, adding it also called for the restoration of pre-1967 status of Palestine.

He said the Federal Cabinet reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance for the resolution of the Palestine issue in line with the aspirations of its people.

Solangi said the forum reiterated the proposal for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its borders predating Israel’s illegal occupation in 1967 as well as Bait-ul-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

He said the prime minister had directed the federal ministers to undertake only essential foreign visits.

The Federal Cabinet had approved the appointments of former Lahore High Court judge Sohail Nasir as Deputy Chairman of NAB and Syed Ehtesham Qadir Shah as NAB Prosecutor General Accountability, he added.

In the Cabinet meeting, he said the approval was also accorded to the proposal of hiring services of the Consortium for Financial Advisory for the Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) privatization.

No action was being taken against Afghan citizens who had Proof of Registration Cards and residing in Pakistan for the last 40 years, he said, while responding to a query.

He said the government would not take any action against those who had Afghan citizen cards that were verified by the previous Afghan government.

The deadline of October 31 for voluntary return was only applicable to those individuals who did not possess any legal document, he said adding thousands of illegal residents had started returning to their countries.

To another query, he said the electoral history of the country suggested that polls were held in extreme cold and hot weather.

  • By: New York City Mayor Eric Adams

New York: Public safety is our administration’s top priority, and keeping New Yorkers safe from the growing threat of fentanyl is a core part of that mission.

All of us have heard about the danger fentanyl poses to our children and our communities. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is approximately 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. It is inexpensive, widely available, highly addictive, and extremely dangerous.

Drug traffickers are increasingly mixing fentanyl with other illicit drugs to drive addiction and create repeat business. Over 3,000 people fatally overdosed in New York City in 2022, with fentanyl detected in 81 percent of drug overdose deaths.

The tragic death of Nicholas Dominici, the toddler who died after being exposed to fentanyl at a daycare center, was a shocking and heartbreaking reminder that we must take immediate action to get this crisis under control.

Last week, we hosted a two-day summit on the fentanyl crisis that brought elected leaders, public health officials, and law enforcement professionals from across the country to New York City to work towards a national strategy to combat fentanyl overdoses.

The summit included representatives from major cities across the nation, including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Laredo, New Haven, Austin, Dallas, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Portland, San Diego, Atlanta, and more. We focused on all aspects of the crisis – including education, enforcement, awareness, prevention, and treatment. Over the course of two days and multiple strategy sessions, we were able to exchange ideas, learn from intervention models across municipalities, and help build a comprehensive strategy to address one of the most important public health and public safety issues of our time.

New York City has already taken significant steps to combat the fentanyl crisis, including intensive enforcement that has resulted in multiple arrests of drug dealers and traffickers, including the recent arrest of a man transporting almost 30 pounds of fentanyl bricks in a rolling suitcase on the subway and on the sidewalks of a busy Bronx neighborhood.

In addition to expanded enforcement, we are actively working with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and other agencies to bolster our harm reduction strategies. We have increased our support for prevention, substance use disorder treatment and recovery programs citywide, and distributed more than 77,000 Naloxone kits and tens of thousands of fentanyl and xylazine test strips. We have also made Naloxone more available in primary care offices, emergency rooms, correctional, reentry, and homeless outreach settings.

At the conclusion of the summit, participants agreed on key actions to address the ongoing fentanyl crisis, including:

Creating a multi-city task force that will meet again before the end of the year; Drafting a comprehensive plan outlining national best practices and opportunities; Expanding data-sharing to the national level to ensure accurate and timely coordination around lab and overdose data; Identifying and securing city, state, and national funding and legislative needs to prevent overdose deaths and save lives,Developing community outreach strategies to better understand behavioral dynamics associated with drug abuse, andTaking steps to reduce the stigma around addiction and substance abuse so that those suffering from addiction can get help before it is too late.

We all came away from this summit with a renewed determination to stop the flow of fentanyl into our cities, hold bad actors accountable, and invest in evidence-based interventions that protect New Yorkers and all Americans from this dangerous drug.

We cannot sit back and let what happened to prior generations happen to our babies and families. We cannot repeat the mistakes that were made that led to the epidemics of heroin in the 1960s and crack cocaine in the 1980s.

I was working as a police officer during the 1980s, and I saw how crack devastated our communities because the resources were not there. We must do everything in our power to confront — and defeat —the fentanyl crisis. That means education, that means treatment, and that means enforcement.

The summit reminded us that we are always stronger and better when we work together. I know that, with our partners from across the country, we can and we will reduce overdoses, save lives, and protect our children and our communities.

  • New York: Adeel Rana, Commanding Officer in the New York Police Department (NYPD) has said that the Pakistani community should stand hand in hand and work together for the wellbeing of the new generation.
