According to the article published in Eureka Alert, Research conducted by Professor Paulo Barbosa de Freitas Júnior at Cruzeiro do Sul University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, can contribute to earlier diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy, a disorder characterized by damage to peripheral nerves, with symptoms such as pain and paresthesia, mainly in the legs and feet.

Freitas and his group tested volunteers to measure the grip force exerted by diabetics with and without a diagnosis of neuropathy, as well as healthy subjects and developed a methodology that can be used to produce equipment for use in clinical practice.

In the study, the group measured the grip force in diabetic patients while they were holding and handling objects. The results were compared with data for healthy subjects and patients with other neurological diseases.

The test results showed that healthy volunteers used between 100% and 120% of the minimum force required to hold an object, whereas the force used by participants with neurological alterations was two and a half times to three times greater. Diabetics exert less force to hold an object than people with other diseases that affect the nervous system.

In the future, the innovation should help physicians diagnose the disorder rapidly and easily not long after the onset of initial symptoms of neuropathy in diabetics.

An article published in the journal Human Movement Science reports the main findings of the study, which was funded by FAPESP via a Regular Research Grant and a scientific initiation scholarship.

The 23-month-old dwarf cow has become a media star with scores of media houses shed the spotlight on the tiny bovine at a farm near Dhaka.

Pictures of Rani on social media platforms have set off a tourist frenzy.

Despite a nationwide transport shutdown because of record coronavirus infections and deaths, people are flocking in rickshaws to the farm in Charigram, 30 kilometres (19 miles) southwest of Dhaka.

“I have never seen anything like this in my life. Never,” said Rina Begum, 30, who came from a neighboring town.

People from across Bangladesh come to see Rani. — AFP

Rani is 66 centimeters (26 inches) long and weighs only 26 kilograms (57 pounds) but the owners say it is 10 centimeters shorter than the smallest cow in Guinness World Records.

M.A. Hasan Howlader, manager of Shikor Agro farm, used a tape measure to show dozens of onlookers how Rani dwarfs her closest rival Manikyam, a cow in the Indian state Kerala that currently holds the world record.

“People come long distances despite the coronavirus lockdown. Most want to take selfies with Rani,” Howlader told news agency, adding Guinness World Records had promised a decision in three months.

“More than 15,000 people have come to see Rani in the past three days alone,” he said.

People have flocked to a farm outside Dhaka to see what its owners say is the worlds smallest cow. — AFP

    “Honestly speaking, we are tired.”

Guinness World Records said Manikyam, from the Vechur breed, was 61 centimeters high in June 2014.

Rani is a Bhutti, or Bhutanese, cow which is prized for its meat in Bangladesh. The other Bhuttis on the farm are twice Rani’s size.

“We did not expect such huge interest. We did not think people would leave their homes because of the worsening virus situation. But they have come here in droves,” the manager said.

Sajedul Islam, the government’s chief vet for the region, said Rani is a product of “genetic inbreeding” and was unlikely to become any bigger.

Islam said he had told the farm to restrict the tourist influx.

“I told them they should not allow so many people to crowd the farm. They may carry diseases here that threaten Rani’s health,” he said.

Pentagon’s Central Command announced on Tuesday that 90% of the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan has been completed.

According to multiple news publishers, CentCom said it had officially handed over seven US bases to the Afghan forces and had evacuated the equivalent of nearly 1,000 C-17 air freighter loads of equipment from the country, ahead of the September deadline to complete the pullout.

On Friday, US forces handed over the Bagram air base located north of Kabul, the main center of US military operations in the country for most of the past two decades of conflict.

Tuesday’s announcement highlighted that most of the process of withdrawing US military and civilian personnel ordered by President Joe Biden in April had been completed.

At the time of Biden’s order, there were officially 2,500 US troops and 16,000 private contractors.

According to reports, there were also some 1,000 US special forces operating in Afghanistan at the time as well not included in the official tally.

While Biden had set a deadline of September the 20th anniversary of the Afghan-based Al Qaeda attack on the US that sparked the American invasion of the country, the Pentagon has moved quickly to reduce its presence to a minimum this month.

“We expect it to be completed by the end of August,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday after the Bagram handover.

The United States is expected to keep 650 or more military personnel in the country to protect the US embassy and diplomats.

  • Dhaka, Bangladesh,

Bangladesh on Monday extended its strictest lockdown to July 14 to combat a surge in coronavirus cases led by the highly contagious Delta variant, with areas bordering India taking the brunt of infections.

The South Asian country reported 164 new coronavirus deaths on Monday, it’s biggest daily rise since the pandemic began, taking the death toll to 15,229. It also reported the highest-ever number of new daily infections at 9,964, with the total standing at 954,881.

Hospitals are overwhelmed with coronavirus patients, particularly in districts bordering India where the Delta variant was first identified. Bangladesh sealed its border with India in April, but the trade continues.

A surge in cases had prompted the government to order a week of tight controls on Thursday, with army troops patrolling streets.

All precautious measures have been extended, the government said in a statement. The shutdown has sparked an exodus of migrant workers from the capital Dhaka to home villages.

Factories are allowed to operate observing health protocols while all offices and transportation remain shut except essential goods carriers and ambulances.

“During the lockdown, there is no work. If this continues, I don’t know how I feed my family,” said Mohammad Manik, father of two, who works as a day laborer at a kitchen market in Dhaka.

“It is not the coronavirus but hunger that will kill us.”

Bangladesh received 2.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine from the US under the COVAX global-sharing scheme over the weekend. It also received two million doses of the Sino-pharm vaccine from China.

Bangladesh’s vaccination drive suffered a blow after India stopped exports of the AstraZeneca shot in response to a record surge in domestic infections, with only 3% of its population of 170 million so far receiving the required two doses.
