The European Union has announced that it will distribute 100 million doses of the Covid 19 vaccine to poor countries by the end of this year.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that we will do everything possible to protect the world from this pandemic.

Earlier, the Director General of the World Trade Organization Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said that “Even removing intellectual property rights from the Covid 19 vaccine will not reduce the gap between demand and supply of vaccines in rich and poor countries unless technology is available”.

South Africa and India have demanded that members of the pharma company remove copyrights to increase vaccine production for poor countries.

According to the World Health Organization, only eight doses of the vaccine are available for every 1,000 people in Africa, while the third largest country in the world has 150 doses per 1,000 people.

The US president has backed the removal of Intellectual property rights to the vaccine, while the EU and other developed countries are of the opinion that this IP removal will not increase production. The major pharmaceutical companies want to maintain the restriction of intellectual property rights so that they can make more profit.

  • Karachi, Pakistan,

Serological research was carried out on 57 samples which revealed that out of the total, the South African and British variants comprised 71% and 20% cases in Karachi, respectively, the health minister said.

According to Dr Azra Pechuho, most of the cases had been reported in children below the age of 2 years, adding that parents should get themselves vaccinated as soon as possible so that they do not contract the virus from their children.

It may be recalled that the wife of one of the 12 Indian diplomats, who had recently visited Pakistan, had tested positive for coronavirus. All 12 Indian officials, along with their families, have been directed by the government to complete the quarantine period.

Back in April, Dr Pechuho has warned residents that they must take extra precaution in the wake of first the UK, the South African and Brazilian coronavirus variants being detected in the province.

In a video message released by the Health and Population Welfare Department of Sindh, Dr Pechuho had said that in a genomic study carried out by Aga Khan University Hospital of 13 samples, 10 were found to have the UK variant, one had the South African variant and one had the Brazilian variant.

Dr Pechuho had said that what adds to the concern is that the South African and Brazilian variants “are not vaccine responsive” and so someone who catches COVID-19 via one of these strains is likely to fall “very ill” despite being vaccinated .

Provincial Health Minister had advised the masses to avoid crowds, including small social gatherings inside homes, as well as travelling unnecessarily.

  • Mumbai,

At least 33 people died and more than 90 were missing on Tuesday after a monster Tauktae cyclone slammed India, compounding the country´s woes as it posted a new record number of coronavirus deaths in 24 hours.

The swirling system dubbed Cyclone Tauktae is the latest in what experts say is a growing number of increasingly severe storms in the Arabian Sea as climate change warms its waters.

Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power after the storm hit the Gujarat coast in western India on Monday evening, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

Winds up to 130 kilometres (80 miles) per hour smashed seafront windows and knocked over power lines and thousands of trees, blocking roads leading to affected areas, officials said.

“I have never experienced such intensity in my life,” a hotel owner in the town of Bhavnagar said.

“It was pitch dark as power was cut off and winds were making a roaring sound. It was scary.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to visit the cyclone-hit regions in Gujarat, his home state, on Wednesday.

One support vessel serving oil rigs that were walloped by eight-metre waves off Mumbai sank and 93 of the 273 people who had been on board were missing, the Indian Navy said Tuesday.

The defence ministry said 180 people were rescued, with warships attempting to save the rest of the crew in “extremely challenging sea conditions”.

Navy helicopters managed, however, to rescue all 137 people stuck on another barge that also slipped its anchor and ran aground. One other barge and an oil rig were also adrift.

According to Gujarat state chief minister Vijay Rupani, said elsewhere, seven new fatalities took the toll to 33, with most of the deaths occurring when houses or walls collapsed.

More than 16,500 houses were damaged, 40,000 trees were uprooted and nearly 6,000 villages were without electricity. Just over 2,100 villages had their power restored, officials said late Tuesday.

Although the cyclone was one of the fiercest in decades, better forecasting than in previous disasters meant that 200,000 people in danger zones were evacuated from their homes.

“Our planning over the last three days has paid off. We have managed to minimize human casualties,” said Rupani.

The cyclone barreled inland, weakening slightly but still bringing heavy rains and gale-force winds. Forecasters said it had eased into a deep depression and would further weaken into a depression overnight.

  • Web Desk,

Manchester United players Paul Pogba and Amad Diallo won praise on social media after they held the Palestinian flag, after the club’s 1-1 draw against Fulham on Tuesday night.

As coronavirus restrictions eased for the first time in 10 months, a mammoth 10,000 fans crowded the stadiums to watch Manchester United lock horns with Fulham.

Pogba, who plays as a midfielder for United, collected a Palestine flag and held it up. Diallo also held the flag and walked alongside his teammate in front of thousands of cheering fans.

This is not the first instance of English Premier League footballers showing solidarity with Palestinians, who are braving atrocities at the hands of the Israeli government.

Leicester City pair Hamza Choudhury and Wesley Fofana raised the Palestinian flag after their Foxes’ FA Cup Final triumph over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.

‘We need to respect their views’: Solskjaer

United manager Solskjaer reacted to Pogba and Diallo’s action, saying that people needed to respect their views.

“We have players from different backgrounds, different cultures, different countries,” he said. “I think we need to respect their views if they differ from someone else’s. If my players think about other things than football, that’s a positive thing,” he added.

“I think we’ve seen that with some of the players before, that they do care about. say Marcus Rashford, for example, the differences he’s made. We respect their right to have a different view,” he added.

Israel has been pounding Gaza with bombs, killing over 200 people since May 10 when Hamas and other Palestinian groups fired rockets at Israel.

The actions were retaliation for Israeli police’s brutality at the Al-Aqsa mosque and in response to the forceful Sheikh Jarrah evictions of Palestinians.

Calls for a ceasefire have intensified, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Israel would continue its onslaught on the coastal enclave “as long as necessary,” before a UN Security Council meeting broke up after less than an hour without issuing a statement.

Israeli forces and protesters meanwhile clashed at multiple flashpoints across the occupied West Bank and in east Jerusalem, hospitalizing scores, as Palestinians rallied in solidarity with their besieged Gazan counterparts. Dozens were treated for wounds caused by live bullets, medics said.

Israel’s near-relentless bombing campaign has killed 217 Palestinians, including 63 children, and wounded more than 1,400 people in just over a week in the Hamas-run enclave, according to Gaza´s health ministry.

The death toll on the Israeli side rose to 12 when a volley of rockets Hamas fired at the southern Eshkol region killed two Thai nationals working in a factory and wounded several others, police said.

Israeli strikes that again sent fireballs, debris and black smoke into the sky have left two million Palestinians in Gaza desperate for reprieve.

“They destroyed our house but I don´t know why they targeted us,” said Nazmi al-Dahdouh, 70, of Gaza City who remained shocked by what he called “a terrifying, violent night”.

The humanitarian crisis deepened in the impoverished strip, from where Hamas has launched nearly 3,500 rockets at Israel since May 10, often forcing people living near Gaza into bomb shelters around the clock.

  • New Dehli,

India reported 267,334 new coronavirus infections over the last 24 hours on Wednesday, as the number of deaths in a single day rose to a record 4,529.

The South Asian nation’s tally stands at 25.5 million, with a death toll of 283,248, health ministry data showed.

It is for the second time since April 21 that new COVID-19 cases reported on a daily basis have fallen below the 300,000 marks.

A total of 244 Indian doctors have lost their lives in fighting the second wave of the coronavirus during March and April, according to the Indian Medical Association.

On Sunday alone, the country reported the death of 50 doctors due to the coronavirus, said the association.

Nearly 1,000 Indian doctors have so far lost their lives in the line of duty since COVID-19 started in the country.

A shortage of vaccines is one major reason behind the deaths of the doctors as only 3 percent of the 244 doctors received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Staff shortages and overwork were another major cause of the doctors getting infected with the virus.

While Indian doctors are exhausted from the surge of new COVID-19 cases, around 90,000 students who have received their medical degrees in foreign countries cannot join in the fight against the pandemic as they are yet to obtain their local licenses from the government.

Experts have warned that many ICU patients may die due to medical staff shortages during the second wave.

Najeerul Ameen, president of the All India Foreign Medical Graduates Association, said it is necessary to allow those medical graduates awaiting their licenses to work on the frontlines at such a critical juncture.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that great efforts were being made to scale up vaccine supplies, while the health ministry is also simplifying the procedures of inoculation.

The country will have over 510 million vaccine doses by July, according to Indian Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.

To meet the increased domestic demand, the Indian government has halted the exports of vaccines produced by the Serum Institute of India.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India Tuesday morning rose to 25,228,996 and the related death toll across the country stands at 278,719, India’s federal health ministry said.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has adopted a resolution demanding Israel to stop atrocious attacks on innocent Palestinian civilians in violation of international law and United Nations resolutions.

The resolution was adopted by the Virtual Open-Ended Extraordinary Meeting of OIC’s Executive Committee at Level of Foreign Ministers on Sunday.

The 57-nation league warned that the continuation of barbaric attacks by Israel would put regional stability at risk.

The OIC asked Israel to respect Muslims’ access to Al Aqsa Mosque and stop settlers from forcibly evicting Palestinian families from their homes.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud opened the meeting by urging the global community to end the escalation in violence and revive peace negotiations based on a two-state solution.

He urged the world to play its part for a peaceful solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict.

“Make no mistake: Israel only understands the language of resistance and the people of Palestine are fully entitled to their right to defend themselves,” Zarif said.

“The plight of the Palestinian people is the bleeding wound of the Islamic world today,” Afghan Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar said.

Reportedly, more than 180 Palestinians have so far killed in Gaza with 1,230 people wounded in Israeli attacks.
