Special decorations for Ramadan begin to appear on the streets with the start of Ramadan in Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia. During this time special traditional “lanterns” take place in homes and buildings.

According to Arab history, Egyptians are considered to be the first people to use the chandelier of Ramadan from the Fatimid period. There are various traditions regarding the history of this chandelier and the beginning of its use. The use of the Ramadan chandelier is associated with the entry of the Fatimid ruler Mu’izz al-Din in Cairo in 358 AH.

Egyptian men, women and children set out in a large procession to welcome Sultan al-Mu’izz, who reached the city during night. All of them were holding torches and colorful lanterns to light the way for the Sultan. On the occasion, lanterns remained lit on the streets till the end of Ramadan. Thus, it became a tradition in Egyptian society associated with the month of Ramadan. This custom later spread to the Arab world

According to another tradition, the use of these lanterns in Egypt is associated with the Fatimid period. Here people used to arrange large-scale renovations in preparation for Ramadan. On the occasion, shops and mosques were decorated with lanterns to keep the streets bright.

Thirty five years on, memory of the famous last-ball six in Sharjah still delights the nation and the hero on that day Javed Miandad is no exception.

April 18 was the day when Miandad hit a six off the last ball of the innings delivered by India’s Chetan Sharma when Pakistan needed four to win. The victory gave Pakistan the 1985-86 Austral-Asia Cup and a moment that would be cherished for a long time to come, celebrating the win over their archrivals India.

The legendary batsman was reminiscing the game’s most celebrated six as nation marked the 35th anniversary and cricket lovers share the video on twitter.

Tauseef, the number 11 during the match, cleverly rotated the strike on the penultimate delivery to give Miandad the strike for the final ball.

“What he [Tauseef] did was exceptional,” Miandad said while praising his former teammate. “It was a pressure situation and he deserves credit for my six because I got the strike due to his crucial single.”

The former captain, while recalling the six, said it was still a lesson for cricketers.

“This tells batsmen to stay at the wicket because runs can come anytime. It was one of the most memorable moments for me because it boosted our cricket and united the nation. I still remember it like yesterday.”

Meanwhile, the batting legend came up with a unique suggestion of fielding 15-20 players in the team. “Why continue with 11 players per side. There was not much population in our times but now it has multiplied.

“More players should be given a chance to play in a playing team.” The former captain said cricket is not played on laptops.

“Cricketers are made after hard work under the scorching sun and not on laptops,” he said, while lamenting the current players’ unwillingness to learn.

“Not a single cricketer has approached me to seek guidance yet. The hunger to learn is not present the way it used to be in our times.”

Elizabeth stood alone as her husband of 73 years was lowered into the Royal Vault

Queen Elizabeth and her family paid their last respects to Prince Philip at a funeral on Saturday that celebrated his naval past, his international heritage and seven decades of service in which he helped guide the queen through repeated crises.

Elizabeth, dressed in black and in a white trimmed black mask, stood alone as her husband of 73 years was lowered into the Royal Vault in a service attended by senior royals including heir Prince Charles and his sons Princes William and Harry.

The queen was placed alone in the ceremony at St George’s Chapel with her children, grandchildren and a select group of royal mourners, separated due to Covid-19 rules.

“We remember before thee this day Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, rendering thanks unto thee–for his resolute faith and loyalty, for his high sense of duty and integrity,” Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said in a prayer.

Philip, officially known as the Duke of Edinburgh, died aged 99 on April 9. The queen in 1997 described Philip as her “strength and stay” over their decades of marriage.

The archbishop praised Philip’s “life of service to the nation and Commonwealth, and for the courage and inspiration of his leadership.”

After the nation observed a minute’s silence in brilliant sunshine, Harry and William took up their places on opposite sides of the chapel in Windsor Castle, with the final resting place of Tudor monarch Henry VIII dividing them.

Philip’s naval cap and sword lay on top of the coffin, which was covered with the Duke of Edinburgh’s personal standard featuring the Danish coat of arms, the Greek cross, Edinburgh Castle and the stripes of the Mountbatten family.

A wreath of white roses, lilies and jasmine from the 94-year-old queen also adorned the coffin.

  • Washington,

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden on Monday marked the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in the US.

“Jill and I send our warmest greetings and best wishes to Muslim communities in the United States and around the world. Ramadan Kareem,” said Biden in a statement.

“As many of our fellow Americans begin fasting tomorrow, we are reminded of how difficult this year has been. In this pandemic, friends and loved ones cannot yet gather together in celebration and congregation, and far too many families will sit down for iftar with loved ones missing,” said the statement, referring to the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during Ramadan.

Biden’s message came on the eve of the fasting month, when all Muslims in the country perform the first tarawih prayers, or special prayers performed after Isha, the last evening prayer.

The president praised the contributions of Muslim Americans to the country, who he said are creating jobs as entrepreneurs and business owners, risking their lives as first responders, teaching in schools as well as fighting COVID-19.

“Muslim Americans have enriched our country since our founding. They are as diverse and vibrant as the America they have helped build,” said the president.

But Biden said Muslim Americans continue to be targeted by bullying, bigotry and hate crimes and his administration will work to protect the rights and safety of all people.

“This prejudice and these attacks are wrong. They are unacceptable. And they must stop. No one in America should ever live in fear of expressing his or her faith,” he said.

He also pledged to stand up for human rights everywhere, including for Uyghurs in China, Rohingya in Myanmar and Muslim communities all over the world.

“As we remember those who we have lost since last Ramadan, we are hopeful for brighter days ahead. The Holy Qur’an reminds us that ‘God is the light of the heavens and earth’ who leads us out of darkness to the light.”

This year, the White House will hold festivities virtually due to the coronavirus and the president said he and the first lady “look forward to resuming the traditional White House Eid celebration in person next year, inshallah.”

“We wish your families an inspiring and rewarding month,” he concluded.

India, country with second-highest number of coronavirus infections, as it reported a new daily record of more than 168,000 cases.

The vast nation of 1.3 billion people has been reporting a rapid increase in new infections in recent weeks, with the surge taking the total toll to 13.5 million cases, above Brazil’s 13.48 million.

Experts have warned that huge, mostly mask-less and tightly packed crowds at political rallies in poll-bound states, mass religious festivals and at other public places were fueling the new wave of infections.

“The whole country has been complacent, we allowed social, religious and political congregations,” Rajib Dasgupta, a health professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, told news agency. “No-one queued up (for social distancing) anymore.”

The country has recorded more than 873,000 cases in the last seven days an increase of 70 percent compared to the previous week, according to data compiled by news agencies. In comparison, Brazil recorded just over 497,000 cases with an increasing trend of 10 percent from the previous week.

The United States the worst-hit country reported just under 490,000 cases with a rising trend of nine percent. The spike in India, after daily rises in cases fell below 9,000 in early February, has seen many badly affected states and territories impose restrictions on movement and activities.

India’s wealthiest state Maharashtra, which has been the main driver of the infection spike, last week imposed a weekend lockdown and night curfew. But Maharashtra has warned that a complete lockdown a drastic measure that national and state governments have tried to avoid to protect the already devastated economy could be imposed within the next few days as cases continue to rise.

“The solution is for everyone to stay home for two months and end this pandemic once and for all. But the public doesn’t listen,” said Rohit, 28, a waiter at a popular Mumbai restaurant who moved to the financial hub for work from the northern state of Punjab. “Nobody follows the rules in the restaurant. If we tell customers to wear masks, they are rude and disrespectful to us.”

The chief minister of India’s capital New Delhi, where a night curfew is in place, said Sunday that 65 percent of new Covid-19 patients were less than 45 years old. His government was not in favor of a lockdown, but said it would consider imposing one if hospital beds start running out.
