  • Washington, DC

The journey from vice-president to Barack Obama to President has not been an easy one for Joe Biden. The Democrat had to fight many odds to reinstate the faith of a better America in the minds of the citizens and his hard-work shall bear the fruit today when he takes oath as the 46th President of the United States at 10:30 pm (IST).

The ceremony has begun in Washington, DC outside Capitol Hill, the same place where the riots took place two weeks ago. Security in the US capital has been beefed up in light of the imminent threat from extremist forces.

The event will be attended by several A-listers, along with the usual pomp the traditional parade, attendance of former presidents and tributes to the US troops. Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, rock legend Bruce Springsteen and Garth Brooks are among those who will take part in the inauguration.

The 2020 Presidential elections were marred by controversies and personal attacks as the belligerent Republican campaign left no stone unturned to sabotage the polls when they saw the mood swing away from their camp to that of the Democrats.

Donald Trump’s controversial stay at the White House has finally come to an end, rather a humiliating one, after his supporters went on a rampage at Capitol Hill, which houses the US government, earlier this month.

The dastardly event led to his impeachment, making him the first sitting US President to get impeached twice. The last two weeks of his term were spent rather quietly after over two months of haggling with the election offices claiming that the Democrats “stole” the polls from the Republicans.

  • Ankara,

Two prominent Democrats are urging the US Congress to probe outgoing President Donald Trump’s ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“I would love to see his phone records to see if he was talking to Putin the day the insurgents invaded our Capitol,” former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on her podcast “You and Me Both,” referring to the day Trump supporters clashed with police, stormed the Congress, and caused the deaths of five people.

On the same podcast, Clinton’s guest Nancy Pelosi, the US House of Representatives speaker, said: “I don’t know what Putin has on him politically, financially or personally, but what happened last week was a gift to Putin because Putin wants to undermine democracy in our country and throughout the world.”

Calling the people who took part in the riot “Putin’s puppets,” she said there is strong support in Congress to open a probe into relations between Trump and Putin.

Clinton later wrote on Twitter “Speaker Pelosi and I agree,” adding: “Congress needs to establish an investigative body like the 9/11 Commission to determine Trump’s ties to Putin so we can repair the damage to our national security and prevent a puppet from occupying the presidency ever again.”

When the House voted on Jan. 13 to impeach Trump over incitement of insurrection for his alleged role in the riots, Trump became the first US president in history to be impeached twice.

A trial on the impeachment charges is expected to begin in the Senate sometime after President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Wednesday.

According to the Constitution of the US, only a sitting president can be impeached, says Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard University law professor. He calls Democratic Party’s attempts to impeach ”citizen” Trump ”plainly unconstitutional.”

In December 2019 the Democratic held House approved two articles of impeachment against Trump abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after he asked Ukraine that July to open investigations into Democratic front-runner Biden and later his refusal to participate in the House investigation of the matter.

US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Monday resigned from the Senate, two days before her inauguration alongside President-elect Joe Biden.

“I would like to thank the people of California for the honor of serving them in the US Senate over the past four years,” Harris wrote in her resignation letter sent to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Newsom had selected California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to serve out the rest of Harris’ term that ends in 2022.

Harris also sent a video message via Twitter, saying she had applied to be a Senate intern in the office of then-senior Senator from California, Alan Cranston, while she was a sophomore at Howard University in 1984.

“I got chosen to be one of her interns. Who would have known, so many years later, I would actually run the office where I was once a student watching the incredible work a senator can do,” she said.

“the vice presidency is the only office in our government that belongs to both the executive branch and the legislative branch,” she also wrote in her farewell letter.

Harris, a Democrat, will have the power to cast tie-breaking votes in the Senate. She noted in her letter there has been 268 tie-breaking votes by a vice president in US history.

She will be the first female vice president in US history, as well as the first African-American and first Asian-American vice president.

The Defense Department and the FBI are vetting all members of the National Guard who will be in the nation’s capital for incoming US President Joe Biden’s inauguration over concerns of a potential insider attack, the Pentagon said Monday.

“While we have no intelligence indicating an insider threat, we are leaving no stone unturned in securing the capital,” Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller said in a statement. “This type of vetting often takes place by law enforcement for significant security events.”

About 25,000 National Guard troops are expected in Washington, D.C. for Biden’s swearing-in on Wednesday after outgoing President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol, overrunning police and temporarily halting the congressional count of Electoral College votes.

In all, five people died in the insurrection, including a Capitol Police officer and an Air Force veteran who was shot by security while attempting to raid the federal legislature. Video from the shooting appears to show Ashli Babbitt attempting to climb through a broken window pane in an attempt to breach the Speaker’s Lobby.

Several of more than 100 individuals arrested in connection with the raid have been identified as military veterans.

Miller’s statement comes on the heels of multiple reports that the FBI and Pentagon are running the names of each of the 25,000 service members in D.C. through databases and watchlists to mitigate the possibility of a potential attack from within during Biden’s inauguration.

At least two people have been arrested at checkpoints erected in the nation’s capital so far. Tall gates have been erected around the Capitol building, multiple streets have been closed to traffic in, and multiple bridges from Virginia are being closed.

Scenes from the area that spans the White House and US Capitol are reminiscent of a heavily militarized urban center.

Common reactions to the vaccine, including fever and nausea, “may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients,” Norwegian Medicines Agency, Sigurd Hortemo said

23 people died in Norway within days of receiving their first dose of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine with 13 of those deaths apparently related to the side effects of the shots, News outlets reported citing the health officials.

All 13 were nursing home patients and at least 80 years old.

Common reactions to the vaccine, including fever and nausea, “may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients,” News media quoted Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency, as saying in a statement on Friday.

While officials aren’t expressing serious concern, they are adjusting their guidance on who should receive the vaccine.

More than 30,000 people in Norway have received the first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccine since late last month.

Agency’s medical director Steinar Madsen has stated that the “agency is not alarmed by this.”

“It is quite clear that these vaccines have very little risk, with a small exception for the frailest patients. Doctors must now carefully consider who should be vaccinated. Those who are very frail and at the very end of life can be vaccinated after an individual assessment,” he said.

The Norweigian agency reported Thursday that a total of 29 people had suffered side effects, including the 13 people who died.

Twenty-one women and eight men experienced side effects, officials said.

Besides those who died, nine had serious side effects including allergic reactions, strong discomfort and severe fever while seven had less serious ones, including severe pain at the injection site, International media reported.

According to health officials around 400 people die each week in the nursing home population.

A Pfizer rep said the company is “aware of reported deaths” following the administration of the vaccine in Norway and is working with the Norwegian Medicines Agency to gather all the relevant information.

The total number of coronavirus cases reported in Norway is 58,202, while the death toll stands at 517, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

  • Baltistan,

Climbers of the winter expedition Mount K2, which is the second-highest mountain in the world, have left the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu on Friday for Pakistan.

Thirteen of the world’s 14 peaks taller than 8,000-meters have been climbed in winter. But one still remains unclimbed the 8,611 meters K2, the world’s second tallest in Pakistan.

Climbers say that avalanches are an ever-present risk, and in winter temperatures can fall to -50C. Winds blow up to 200km/h that’s equal to cyclone Fani, the most severe storm that travelled more than 900 kilometres from the Indian state of Odisha and blew nearly two dozen tents at Everest’s Camp 2, at 6,400 metres in May last year.

K2 is also considered to be a technically very difficult mountain to climb and has been dubbed “Killer Mountain” for the sheer number of climbers that have lost their lives on the mountain.

“It’s the planet’s toughest and most dangerous mountain to climb,” said Kami Rita Sherpa, who has climbed Everest a record 24 times.

Eighty-four climbers have died attempting to climb K2, and only 306 have reached its summit. The death and success ratio is roughly one death for every three successful climbs.

In contrast, 6,507 mountaineers have climbed Everest from the Nepal side since Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and New Zealander Edmund Percival Hillary first set foot atop the world’s highest peak in May 1953.

In the summer of 1954, Italian climbers Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli became the first persons to reach the summit of K2.

“K2 is 237 meters lower than Everest, but it is much challenging to climb even in the best conditions. That’s in summer,” said Kami Rita. “The weather in winter is beyond imagination. The weather is good only for 2-3 hours a day.”

Kami Rita, who had climbed the K2 in the summer of 2014, said as far as K2 is concerned he is retired.

But now a massive 55-member group of climbing veterans from around the world, including 27 Sherpas from Nepal, has set its sight on one of the most daring missions on the planet, which many mountaineers still call an “impossible project”.

The extreme mission, that may cost more than Rs200 million, is being handled by Kathmandu-based Seven Summit Treks, which also devised the expedition.

Chhang Dawa Sherpa, the youngest mountaineer to have climbed all the 14 highest peaks, is leading the K2 winter mission.

Spanish climber Sergi Mingote, who has been attempting to climb all eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen within 1,000 days, is the co-leader of the expedition. Mingote’s plan had come to a halt, after seven successful summits, due to COVID-19 related restrictions.

Nepali climber Nirmal “Nims” Purja, who smashed the record for taking the shortest time to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter-high mountains and had also announced his plans to climb bid K2 in the winter of 2020-21, has joined the group. Through his website nimsdai.com, he has described K2 winter ascent as “the last great mountaineering challenge”.

Other climbers include Noel Hanna from Britain, Arnold Coster from the Netherlands, Atanas Skatov from Bulgaria, Waldemar Kowalewski from Poland, Antonis Sykaris from Greece and Luis Carlos Garranzo Ibanez from Spain. Slovenian, Romanian, Swiss, Italian, Chilen, American and Finnish mountaineers are also part of the 55-member mission.

The two-month-long expedition will begin from December 21 and ends by February 28.

“Ten Sherpa climbers left for Pakistan on Sunday,” said Thaneshwor Guragain, manager of Seven Summit Treks. “The remaining 17 climbers from Nepal are scheduled to join them on December 18 and others from around the world will join the expedition by December 20.”

The bid to climb K2 in the winter has attracted mountaineers for long.

The mountain has been attempted more than 30 times in winter but all expeditions have been unsuccessful with the highest point reached being 7,400 meters.

Last winter, Spanish mountaineer Alex Txikon, led one of the two expeditions to K2 comprising mostly Sherpa climbers. But it was unsuccessful. Several expeditions have failed in past years, mainly because of unstable climate, mountaineers said.

“The K2 winter feat is very tough. If any member of the team climbs, it will be another milestone in the mountaineering history the first winter ascent of the world’s second-tallest mountain,” said Kami Rita. “Even Sherpas who have climbed Everest multiple times are scared to climb K2.”

K2 is a rocky mountain up to 6,000 meters and beyond it becomes an ocean of snow, according to Seven Summit Treks.

“It’s difficult even to reach the base camp of K2. We have to trek on the glacier for a week to reach the base camp and there aren’t any lodging and fooding facilities on the way up,” said Kami Rita, who has plans to lead two expeditions on Everest in spring next year.

According to Kami Rita, one spot in particular is infamous in K2. That’s Bottleneck, a perilous couloir about 300 meters below the summit, which was the site of a 2008 tragedy in which 11 people were killed in an avalanche.

“Winter brings with it a whole different level of danger and challenge. Numerous teams have attempted since 1987-88, but all have fallen short, Purja writes in his website describing it as a personal project.

“Not only do the sheerness of the slopes and overall exposure create a technically challenging climb, but the weather is also always the great opponent on K2 all year round.”

  • Mumbai, India,

Police officials in Mumbai obtained WhatsApp conversations showing  India’s firebrand anchor of Republic TV, Arnab Goswami, was regularly communicating  the head of ratings company Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) Pratho Dasgupta, said the Indian publications.

According to publication, Mumbai Police have mentioned the relationship in a supplementary charge sheet filed during an investigation into a ratings tampering scandal involving a few news channels in India, including the hyper-nationalist Republic TV.

The publication reported that police have retrieved conversations that are more than 1,000 pages from Dasgupta’s phone.

In the conversation, the BARC CEO was seen asking Goswami to reach out to the government on his behalf at multiple times.

In a conversation on April 4, 2019, just days before the general elections, Dasgupta had asked the Republic TV anchor to stall India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority’s (TRAI) proposal to make the BARC’s viewing data public rather than the council just supplying it to channels.

Dasgupta had told Goswami that if the data was made public then multiple channels could be blacked out by Multi System Operators (MSOs) and Local Cable Operators (LCOs).

“With public data, MSOs and LCOs will push you guys for more carriage,” Dasgupta had told Goswami.

In response to his fears, the anchor assured the BARC CEO that when the Narendra Modi-led government returns to power then the TRAI will become toothless.

The publication, quoting the conversations, said that Goswami had also asked Dasgupta to share with him points on how reforms were politically harmful to the government.

“With channels getting blacked out, impact of messaging on TV will reach lesser people and hence diluted impact,” Dasgupta said in the transcripts.

“Can you help by telling AS to tell TRAI to pipe down on BARC?” asked the BARC CEO.

The publication said that the two had made multiple references to “AS”, with whom Goswami purportedly enjoyed a close relationship. It added that the initials were not disclosed in the transcript.

Following the conversation, Goswami responded to the BARC CEO saying that “a strong message has been conveyed to TRAI.”

Indian news publisher said that this was not the only time that the BARC CEO had sought Goswami’s help against TRAI.

During the conversation, Dasgupta had told the Republic TV multiple times that he was under pressure from “vested interests”. He also says he is under pressure from various channels on viewership data.

At one point the BARC CEO had also approached Goswami to get him a job as “media advisor” in the Prime Minister’s Office.

In other conversations, Goswami had complained to the BARC CEO over his channel not getting better ratings but he was assured by Dasgupta that necessary steps will be taken to “clean the data”.

Hillary Clinton sang the praises of a new documentary on the October 2019 murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, urging everyone to see it.

“If you haven’t seen The Dissident, I hope that you will,” the former US secretary of state and presidential candidate said late Tuesday on Twitter

“This incredibly powerful documentary about the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of the Saudi government is available to watch now,” she added, linking to a site where the film is available.

The Dissident, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bryan Fogel, explores “the labyrinth of deceit behind the murder” of Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, according to the film synopsis.

The documentary, available on Apple TV, is described as telling the untold story of the crime that shook the world and, featuring “never before seen” surveillance footage and “unprecedented access to a wealth of other damning information previously unavailable to the public.”

Khashoggi, 59, was killed and dismembered on Oct. 2, 2018 by a group of Saudi operatives shortly after he entered the country’s consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Activists and human rights groups have said the murder was premeditated and carried out upon the directives of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a charge Riyadh denies.

Turkish prosecutors and leaders have pressed for a full accounting of the murder and for its perpetrators to face justice.

  • NEW DELHI,

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday put on hold three controversial farm laws that have triggered weeks of protests by farmers.

The court set up a four-member committee that will hear both government and farmers’ views and submit a report to the court.

In its order, the court said it is of the view that the “stay of implementation of all the three farm laws for the present, may assuage the hurt feelings of the farmers and encourage them to come to the negotiating table with confidence and good faith.”

Three new agricultural laws passed in the Parliament in September last year sparked an agricultural upheaval in India, with thousands of protesting farmers currently camping on the borders around the capital New Delhi, seeking a rollback of the legislations.

In response to the judgment, farmer groups said they will not appear before the committee.

At a news conference Tuesday evening, Darshan Pal, a farmer leader, said: “We won’t meet the committee members.”

The members of the committee are “pro-government” and have been “supporting” the farm laws, said Balbir Singh Rajewal, another farmer leader.

Today’s Supreme Court order came a day after the top court expressed “disappointment” over the government’s handling of the protests.

However, the government stated in an affidavit submitted with the Supreme Court on Monday: “The legislations are not hurriedly made but is a result of two decades of deliberations. The farmers of the nation are happy as they are given an additional option over and above the existing and, therefore, no vested right is taken away.”

Farmers protest since September last year, the Indian government announced “three agricultural reforms” for farmers, which the farmers and experts believe will further exploit them and threaten the food security of the country.

According to the reforms, large companies are allowed to directly buy produce from farmers. In India, farmers usually sell their produce at local state-registered markets that ensure them a minimum support price, which protects them from price shocks in case of a bad crop year.

Farmers believe that in the absence of state regulators, big corporations will exploit them. The laws, put on hold by the court, also include the promotion of contract farming and lifting of the ban on the storage of potatoes, onions, and pulses.

In its attempts to address the matter, the Indian government has held several rounds of talks with the farming community but failed to find any amicable solution.

In its ongoing war against the US President Donald Trump and his Republican supporters, microblogging website Twitter Tuesday announced the permanent suspension of 70,000 accounts allegedly linked to QAnon’s far-right conspiracy theory since Friday.

In 2019, the FBI designated QAnon as a domestic terror threat due to its potential to “incite extremist violence.”

The company described the move as a step taken “to protect the conversation on our service from attempts to incite violence, organize attacks, and share deliberately misleading information about the election outcome,” following the last week’s “horrific events” in Washington, D.C. where hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building.

Many instances of a single individual operating numerous accounts have been detected, Twitter said.

Following the Jan. 6 breach of the Capitol, Twitter warned in a blog post that “additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action.”

The social media platform also permanently suspended outgoing US President Donald Trump’s account, @realDonaldTrump, due to the “risk of further incitement of violence” a move followed by Instagram and Facebook.

Trump is accused by Democrats of inciting supporters to halt Congress from confirming President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

On Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo slammed the controversial move by American tech companies and social media platforms.

“Censorship, wokeness, political correctness it all points in one direction: authoritarianism cloaked as moral righteousness, similar to what we’re seeing in Twitter and Facebook and Apple and on too many university campuses today. It’s not who we are,” Pompeo said at Voice of America.

  • Washington,

The US announced Monday that the iconic Washington Monument will be shuttered until at least Jan. 24 over “credible threats to visitors and park resources” after the Capitol was stormed last week by President Donald Trump’s supporters, an incident which left five people dead.

In announcing its decision, the National Park Service pointed explicitly to the events last week in Washington, D.C., saying in a written public notice: “Groups involved in the January 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol continue to threaten to disrupt the 59th presidential inauguration on January 20, 2021.

“In response, the National Park Service will suspend tours of the Washington Monument beginning January 11, 2021 through January 24, 2021 and may institute temporary closures of public access to roadways, parking areas and restrooms within the National Mall and Memorial Parks if conditions warrant, to protect public safety and park resources.”

It warned that closures may be extended if the threats persist, and said they could be expanded to include public access to roadways, parking areas, and restrooms on the National Mall and memorial parks.

“These temporary closures are based upon a determination, in consultation with the local authorities, that such actions are necessary for the maintenance of public health and safety,” it added.

The move comes as the FBI reportedly received information that armed protests are being planned in all 50 state capitols as well as at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. starting Saturday and running through Jan. 20, the date of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

News outlet also reported that an unspecified group is calling for the “storming” of local, state and federal offices and courts in the event that Trump is removed from office before Biden’s inauguration by either impeachment or the 25th Amendment.

House lawmakers earlier Monday introduced a single article of impeachment against the president, alleging he sought to foment insurrection during last week’s deadly siege of the Capitol.

The Department of Homeland Security announced that it is moving up its security operations for Biden’s inauguration to this Wednesday due to the “evolving security landscape.” They were to begin Jan. 19 one day before the ceremony.

“In light of events of the past week and the evolving security landscape leading up to the inauguration and at the recommendation of Secret Service Director James Murray, I have instructed the US Secret Service to begin the National Special Security Event operations for the 2021 Inauguration effective Wednesday, January 13th instead of January 19th,” Acting Secretary Chad Wolf said in a statement.

“Our federal, state, and local partners will continue to coordinate their plans and position resources for this important event,” he added.
