  • Lakeland diners just might think twice about chowing down on fried chicken after they see—and hear—“Hell on Wheels,” PETA’s guerilla-marketing campaign featuring a life-size chicken transport truck covered with images of real chickens crammed into crates on their way to a slaughterhouse, complete with actual recorded sounds of the birds’ cries and a subliminal message every 10 seconds suggesting that people go vegan. The vexatious vehicle will debut outside Frescos Southern Kitchen & Bar before moving on to confront diners at LoveBird Almost Famous Chicken, Zaxby’s, PDQ, Chick-fil-A, The WingHouse Bar & Grill, 4 Rivers Smokehouse, Grillsmith, Smokey Bones, Hooters, and BubbaQue’s BBQ.

When:    Saturday, January 6, 12 noon

Where:    Outside Frescos Southern Kitchen & Bar, 132 S. Kentucky Ave., Lakeland

“Behind every barbecued wing or bucket of fried chicken is a once-living, sensitive individual who was crammed onto a truck for a terrifying, miserable journey to their death,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ truck is an appeal to anyone who eats chicken to remember that the meat industry is cruel to birds and the only kind meal is a vegan one.”

  • Despite disinheritance and threats of legal action, there are no hard feelings between Uncle Ewan and Cousin Greg—not in real life anyway. Succession stars James Cromwell and Nicholas Braun, who played Ewan Roy and Greg Hirsch, respectively, will come together this Saturday as Cromwell—who is nominated for a Creative Arts Award Emmy that evening—cuts the ribbon for the grand opening of PETA’s Los Angeles event space, The James Cromwell Empathy Center, in honor of the actor, who has spoken up for animal rights at every turn. Cromwell’s good friend Ed Begley Jr. will speak at the event.

    When:    Saturday, January 6, 10 a.m.

Where:    2624 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles

James Cromwell with rescued pig on bench

    James Cromwell and “Babe”

“There is no successor to James Cromwell—he is the king of activism for animals and others,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “Animals have a fierce and lifelong ally in James, and PETA is happy to honor him by naming a building after him for his relentless advocacy for all animals threatened with exploitation, torment, and slaughter.”

Cromwell is a PETA honorary board director and helped the group persuade Air France to end its shipments of monkeys to laboratories by locking himself in a shipping crate at Los Angeles International Airport. He also helped shut down Texas A&M University’s deplorable canine muscular dystrophy laboratory after being arrested during a protest at the university’s board of regents meeting. Most recently, he superglued his hand to the counter at a New York Starbucks store and starred in a parody video to protest the company’s surcharge on vegan milk and helped transfer a PETA-rescued piglet he named Babe to a sanctuary after the piglet fell off a truck taking him to be fattened for slaughter.

Vegan lattes, treats from Just What I Kneaded vegan bakery, and PETA Empathy Kits will be given away to guests.

  • Inspired by the Greek myth of Sisyphus, who was condemned to roll a stone up a mountain only to have it roll back down every time, PETA’s very own Sisyphus, dressed in a loincloth circa 1 million B.C., will push a giant vegan cheese wheel up a hill on Thursday—and push everyone, particularly resistant men, to go vegan in the new year.

When:    Thursday, January 4, 12 noon

Where:    At the intersection of Bourbon and Iberville streets, New Orleans

    sisyphus cheese wheel pushed uphill

The prehistoric display aims to call upon everyone—but primarily men, who are the most likely to say that they “just can’t give up” dairy cheese—to “man up” and overcome their addiction. To prove how easy this is, everyone who shows up to witness the feat will be treated to complimentary creamy, dairy-free cheese wheels from Babybel, just one of the many tasty vegan cheeses on the market in 2024.

“Men are renowned for being the most stubborn, cheese-addicted people, and we’re challenging them to switch to delicious vegan cheese for the sake of their arteries, the animals, and the Earth,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s display will remind everyone that kicking cruel and unhealthy dairy cheese to the curb is not a Sisyphean task.”

PETA notes that real men are protectors, not bullies, and in the dairy industry, calves are torn away from their mothers, often within a day of birth, so that the milk meant to nourish them can be stolen and sold to humans. PETA’s investigations into dairy facilities have found workers electroshocking cows in the face, hitting them with poles and a cane, and abusing them in other ways. Once their bodies wear out from repeated pregnancies, they’re sent to slaughter.

  • On Wednesday, a troop of PETA supporters will cause a ruckus outside the EGYPTAIR departure terminal at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport over the airline’s ongoing importation of hundreds of endangered long-tailed macaques for use in the animal experimentation industry despite the company’s previous ban on the practice and concerns about the spread of diseases that are transmissible to humans, including tuberculosis (TB).

    When:    Wednesday, January 3, 10 a.m.

Where:    EGYPTAIR Departures, JFK International Airport (Terminal 1), Queens

    Credit: PETA

“Cramming hundreds of terrified monkeys into cargo holds to be shipped around the world for experiments does nothing to advance human health and increases the risk of importing diseases transmissible to humans,” says PETA primate scientist Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel. “PETA is calling on EGYPTAIR to uphold its pledge to get out of the cruel and deadly endangered monkey trade.”

Monkeys imported for experimentation are captured in nature or bred on squalid farms, and those who survive illness and injury are packed into small wooden crates and locked inside EGYPTAIR’s dark cargo holds on the first part of their days-long journey to their final destination—laboratories, where they’ll be poisoned, mutilated, and killed. The industry also poses a danger to the public: Multiple shipments of monkeys infected with TB have been imported to North American labs, and monkeys from Cambodia have arrived infected with a bacterium so deadly that the U.S. classifies it as a bioterrorism agent.

A PETA Asia investigation into Vietnamese duck farms and slaughterhouses—which provide suppliers, including one that listed H&M as a customer, with purportedly “responsible” down—shows ducks, who were suffering from gaping and bloody wounds inside dirty sheds and on lots strewn with feces, being stabbed in the neck while still conscious. Many of the birds continued to move for more than a minute after workers slashed their necks and cut off their feet. As a result, H&M has removed the “responsible” down label from its online offerings in the U.S.—indicating that it knows the designation is a sham—but it continues to sell down.

PETA has released nine exposés of the down industry, each one proving that filth, suffering, and violent deaths are industry norms.

  • Pushing coal-filled wheelbarrows, a bevy of PETA “elves” will descend on Radio City Music Hall on Thursday to make a pointed appeal for the Christmas Spectacular to stop using live camels, sheep, and donkeys in its Nativity scene, a practice that began before people realized that the animals are needlessly stressed during transport and by being plonked down into an unfamiliar environment and subjected to large crowds and loud noises.

    When:    Thursday, December 21, 7 p.m.

PETA’s “elves” will also point out that it’s highly stressful and confusing for animals to be stored backstage like props—and that the Christmas Spectacular partners with notorious animal exhibitor Dawn Animal Agency, whose many citations for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act include failing to maintain adequate veterinary programs and housing animals in cluttered, damaged, and grime-filled enclosures.

“Radio City Music Hall deserves coal in its stocking for not evolving with the times and still dragging stressed-out animals across its stage this December,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on the stage show to make Santa’s ‘nice’ list by kicking off a kinder, animal-free production.”

  • Tucson will get a tasty treat tomorrow when a flock of PETA LAMBS (“Least Among My Brothers and Sisters” from Matthew 25:40) supporters land beneath a new sky-high plea that just went up on Grant Road to remind everyone that there’s no better time than Christmas to show mercy to all of God’s creations by going vegan. The group’s faith outreach division will help passersby enjoy a delicious and compassionate holiday by distributing free vegan cheese underneath the can’t-miss message.

When:    Tuesday, December 19, 12 noon

Where:    831 W. Grant Rd., Tucson

all mothers love their babies billboard

“Christmas is the season of goodwill, and it’s easy to show compassion to vulnerable mother cows and their babies by choosing the delicious vegan cheese, milk, and ice cream available everywhere,” says PETA Vice President Daniel Paden. “PETA LAMBS encourages everyone to celebrate the holiday with a decadent vegan feast that leaves all animals in peace.”

Animals aren’t mentioned in Genesis 1:29, which states that God provides “every seed-bearing plant” and “every tree whose fruit contains seed” as food for humans. In the dairy industry, calves are torn away from their mothers, often within a day of birth, so that the milk meant to nourish them can be stolen and sold to humans. • At PETA, we go all out to defend animals. Our eye-catching public demonstrations are an important part of this: They propel animals’ needs and interests into the public conversation, and most importantly, they get results.

    Now Serving Grilled … ‘Baby’?!

people look on as PETA member barbecues baby doll with prop vegetables

On Good Friday, a PETA supporter served up food for thought in Jacksonville, Florida, by barbecuing a lifelike “baby” and vegetables. Other animal defenders handed out vegan starter kits and held signs reading, “Leave Babies Off the BBQ. Go Vegan!”

The meat industry robs animals of their lives for food when they’re just months or years old, a small fraction of their natural life expectancy. Every animal is someone’s baby.

Naked ‘Monkeys’ Barreled Onto Harvard Football Field

nearly nude peta protestor covered in what seems to be dirt and ash holds a sign reading "harvard end monkey tests" in a packed football stadium. stadium workers are convened in front of the protestor.

Touchdown! Two PETA supporters bodypainted as macaques, wearing “tails,” and holding signs that read, “Harvard: End Monkey Tests!” stormed the field during the 2023 Harvard-Yale football game. Police took them away, but only after their mission was complete.

Margaret Livingstone has spent 40 years failing to produce human treatments from her torturous research— which has included separating infants from their mothers and sewing their eyes shut—but PETA’s “monkeys” managed to stir up conversation about Harvard University’s foolish endorsement of her lab in only a few minutes.

    ‘Dead Dolphins’ Flooded Downtown Orlando

On “Boycott SeaWorld” Day, a pod of PETA supporters in dolphin masks and “fins” gathered for a die-in in the heart of downtown Orlando, Florida. Each protester held a sign bearing the name and age of a dolphin who died in a SeaWorld abusement park.

We encouraged would-be SeaWorld attendees to boycott the wretched hellhole and reminded Orlando residents about the daily suffering of animals imprisoned at the facility.

Free Beer for Freedom From Mutilation!

horse masked protesters in a row with signs against budweiser

On Budweiser’s 90th anniversary of mutilating Clydesdale horses, PETA’s “horses” protested at the company’s flagship brewery by handing out cans of ale from St. Louis–based 4 Hands Brewing Company. Armed with signs proclaiming, “Budweiser Has Blood on Its Cans,” they called the company out for mutilating the horses it purported to celebrate.

2023 victory! Anheuser-Busch InBev—the parent company of iconic American beer brand Budweiser—agreed to stop cutting the tailbones off its Clydesdale horses in September.

The Council of Animals Convened on the National Mall

animal sculpture in DC showing angular metal animal sculptures with a backdrop of the US Capitol building. from left to right: polar bear, elephant, rhinoceros with a bird on their back, and at a podium with a microphone appearing to dictate to the three, a meerkat.

If animals could speak in a language that humans could understand, what would they say to us? For two months, the groundbreaking exhibit The Council of Animals (What to Do About the Humans) challenged everyone in Washington, D.C., to reflect on this urgent question. The installation included a recorded speech voiced by Battlestar Galactica and Academy Award–nominated actor Edward James Olmos.

The multimedia exhibit, created in collaboration with artist Quill Hyde and located just blocks from the U.S. Capitol, was a call to the country’s leaders and the public that we must learn to coexist peacefully with our fellow animals and not to exploit them, which means acting on the realization that their lives and interests matter.

‘Dogs’ in Coffins Greeted Iditarod Mushers at the Starting Line

four protestors outside in jackets, two of whom have dog masks and coffin costumes on reading a short eulogy for dogs who died in the Iditarod.

PETA supporters were at all three of the 2023 Iditarod’s weekend events—the Mushers Banquet, the Ceremonial Start, and the Willow Restart—protesting and spreading awareness of the plight of dogs used for the race. Equipped with signs and accompanied by PETA “dogs,” who stood in coffins displaying the names and stories of real dogs who had died during the race, our protesters ensured that every spectator knew that more than 150 of them had died in the Iditarod to date.

‘Beamish’ Confronted His Tormentor at Vanderbilt University

a monkey mascot in a row with other protestors all holding signs

A troop of protesters, including one representing Beamish the monkey, rallied at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, to expose the pain and trauma inflicted on primates in the laboratory of experimenter Elisabeth Murray, who was scheduled to give a talk in a building nearby. Beamish has been a prisoner of Murray’s laboratory at the National Institutes of Health since 2010.

PETA Made Headlines at New York Fashion Week

a model in a dress with a fake sheep head on their shoulder. they hold a sign reading "wool is for ewe (note: spelled as in baby sheep) not you (note: as in the personal pronoun)"

Following a stir at Paris Fashion Week caused by Schiaparelli’s three-dimensional animal-head designs worn by Kylie Jenner and other models, a PETA model walked a pop-up runway during New York Fashion Week wearing a faux sheep’s head in a salute to and a twist on the designer’s style.

Our design was sans wool, however, and 14 PETA exposés have shown shearers on sheep farms worldwide beating, stomping on, and cutting open sheep as well as slitting their throats.

PETA’s ‘Urban Outraged’ Brought Scary Styles

a person poses with a jacket made to look like it's made of human faces. signs in the background read "whose skin are you in?"

In a world where humans profit from selling animals’ skin, “Who are you wearing?” is a question that PETA wants fashionistas to ask each other more literally.

So we had our models set up a runway outside an Urban Outfitters store in Miami to showcase fashionable designs made of hyper-realistic “human leather.” The clothing came from Urban Outraged, a campaign in the guise of an online store that “sells” jackets, boots, skirts, and bags made from what looks like human skin.

Drenched in Sludge for a Leather Grudge

PETA Latino supporters drenched themselves in black sludge outside a Houston Urban Outfitters store to show the retailer that leather is a dirty business. The sludge represented the massive harm that leather production inflicts on animals, humans, and the environment. Cows and calves are condemned to short, miserable lives for leather bags and shoes, which require enormous amounts of energy and dangerous chemicals to produce.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Vegan leather is readily available, kinder, and more sustainable than animal skin. The world is rapidly going vegan, and we’ll keep boosting vegan leather and making sure people know that using animals for their skin destroys the planet.

    ‘Pigs’ Invaded UTHSC’s Board Meeting

protestors in photorealistic pig masks with signs in a row. the signs read "pig mutilation cruel and unnecessary", "UTCOM stop abusing pigs", and "chancellor buckley, end deadly animal use in medical training".

Early in the year, protesters dressed as pigs crashed a University of Tennessee Health Science Center meeting to protest against the needless mutilation of live pigs in surgical and medical training programs at the school’s College of Medicine (UTCOM).

2023 victory! After 17 rigorous months of campaigning, the Health Science Center announced the end of UTCOM’s use of live animals in surgical and emergency medical residency training programs on its Chattanooga campus.

PETA Brought ‘Monkey Business’ to Whole Foods

protesters blockading the checkout lanes at whole foods, with monkey masks and signs reading "cruel foods" and "choose only non thai coconut milk". other protestors appear in mock prison jumpsuits. police officers are grabbing protestors.

PETA “monkeys” organized a massive sit-in to protest Whole Foods’ sale of coconut milk from Thailand. The protesters—chained like the monkeys who are held prisoner and forced to pick coconuts on Thai coconut farms—even faced arrest.

PETA Asia investigations have repeatedly revealed that monkeys in Thailand are often caged, kept in isolation, chained for life, and trained through fear of punishment to pick coconuts, yet Whole Foods continues to sell Thai coconut milk.

PETA Latino Brought Out a Crowd for SeaWorld

a row of protestors holding signs protesting seaworlds' confinement of orcas, along with a bubble with a human trapped inside. one sign reads seaworld, don't let another orca die in a tiny tank!

In protest, that is. PETA Latino held a massive show of support in San Diego for Corky, the orca who has spent the past 53 years imprisoned at the abusementpark. She was torn away from her family as a baby, used as a breeding machine (all her babies died), and is still forced to perform in shows for audiences, even though a seaside sanctuary is ready to provide her with a semblance of the natural environment she has always needed and deserved.

Musician, actor, vegan activist, and longtime PETA supporter Christopher von Uckermann was the star of the show, trapped inside a large bubble to highlight the misery that Corky endures in her tiny enclosure every day.

Earlier this year at the Miami Seaquarium, Lolita died before she could be transported to the sanctuary home that awaited her. PETA is dedicated to making sure this doesn’t happen to Corky.

Elephant Defenders Brought the Circus to the Streets

a PETA supporter standing, wrapped in chains in a parking lot is handled by a police officer. behind them, are other supporters and police.

In a rock-solid show of solidarity and disruption, PETA supporters wearing elephant masks chained themselves to the front gate of the Jim R. Miller Park & Event Center.

They blocked drivers from accessing the entrance to the Yaarab Shrine Circus, preventing them from seeing the performance. Other animal allies rallied with them, holding signs proclaiming, “Yaarab Shriners Support Animal Abuse.”

The Yaarab Shrine Circus is among the last remaining shows that still use animals, who are confined to small crates, kept in shackles, and deprived of any semblance of natural lives. It has partnered with notoriously cruel exhibitors, including Carson & Barnes Circus, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited for more than 100 violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. A PETA eyewitness also caught a head trainer on video attacking elephants with bullhooks—weapons resembling a fireplace poker with a sharp hook on one end.

  • Whole Foods’ continued sale of Thai coconut milk, even though it knows that the Thai coconut industry is driven by the forced labor of endangered pig-tailed macaques, has earned the grocery giant an international rebuke, so PETA “monkeys” in prisoner garb will dump wheelbarrows of humanely picked coconuts outside the Whole Foods store on First Street on Tuesday.

When:    Tuesday, December 19, 12 noon

Where:    Outside Whole Foods, 1451 First St., Sarasota

Many monkeys used in Thailand’s coconut-picking industry are illegally snatched from their natural habitat as babies, fitted with rigid metal collars, chained, whipped, and forced to climb trees to pick heavy coconuts. Their canine teeth are sometimes pulled out in order to leave them defenseless. Because the industry and the Thai government lie about their systemic reliance on forced monkey labor, it’s impossible to guarantee that any coconut milk from Thailand is free of it. Multiple companies that produce coconut milk sold at Whole Foods were named by industry workers in a PETA Asia investigation as having used coconuts obtained by monkey labor. HelloFresh, Purple Carrot, and Performance Food Group stopped sourcing coconut milk from Thailand following PETA Asia’s exposé.

“Whole Foods’ continued sale of products implicated in the abuse of an endangered species is particularly appalling coming from a company that claims to care about animal welfare,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Whole Foods to live up to its values and sell coconut milk only from countries where monkey labor isn’t used, including India, Indonesia, and the Philippines.”

  • Local diners just might think twice about chowing down on fried chicken after they see—and hear—“Hell on Wheels,” PETA’s guerilla-marketing campaign featuring a life-size chicken transport truck covered with images of real chickens crammed into crates on their way to a slaughterhouse, complete with actual recorded sounds of the birds’ cries and a subliminal message every 10 seconds suggesting that people go vegan. The vexatious vehicle will circle the heart of Daytona Beach at Main Street and S. Atlantic Avenue—near Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q and Steve’s Famous Diner—before moving on to confront diners at 4 Rivers Smokehouse, Metro Diner, casualbird, BurgerTen and ChickenToo, Pollo Tropical, Huey Magoo’s Chicken Tenders, and Brickyard Lounge and Grill.

Where:    Circling Main Street and S. Atlantic Avenue, Daytona Beach

That’s the food for thought PETA supporters will be serving up on Saturday as they “barbecue” a lifelike “dog” next to Vernon Worthen Park and the Downtown Farmers Market while other animal allies hand out free vegan starter kits and kids’ guides to animal rights.

  • Holiday shoppers will be met with a disturbing sight on Thursday outside the Michigan Avenue H&M store: fake dead ducks hung by their feet on a clothing rack alongside a row of “bloody” jackets. The action comes courtesy of PETA, whose supporters will call out H&M’s use of cruelly produced down and urge passersby to shop only for feather-free products.

When:    Thursday, December 14, 12 noon

An image from PETA Asia’s investigation into Vietnamese duck farms. Credit: PETA

A PETA Asia investigation into Vietnamese duck farms and slaughterhouses—which provide suppliers, including one that listed H&M as a customer, with purportedly “responsible” down—shows ducks suffering from gaping and bloody wounds inside dirty sheds and on lots strewn with feces being stabbed in the neck while still conscious. Many of the birds continued to move for more than a minute after workers slashed their necks and cut off their feet. As a result, H&M has removed the “responsible” down label from its online offerings in the U.S.—indicating that it knows the designation is a sham—but it continues to sell down.

  • Shoppers attending Wednesday’s grand opening of the new Whole Foods store in Madison will be confronted by an 8-foot crying “monkey” chained to a massive coconut as PETA pushes the grocery giant to stop selling coconut milk from Thailand, where the coconut industry is involved in a scandal over the forced labor of endangered pig-tailed macaque monkeys.

    When:    Wednesday, December 13, 9 a.m.

Where:    In front of Whole Foods, 4710 Madison Yards Way, Madison

Monkeys used in Thailand’s coconut-picking industry are illegally snatched from their forest homes as babies, fitted with rigid metal collars, chained, whipped, and forced to climb trees to pick coconuts. • On Sunday, the day before the 54th anniversary of Corky the orca’s capture from her ocean home, PETA supporters dressed in Santa Claus costumes will descend on SeaWorld to push the abusement park to see the strength of public opinion against her ho-ho-horrible confinement and release her into a seaside sanctuary.

When:    Sunday, December 10, 12 noon

Where:    500 Sea World Dr. (at the intersection of Sea World Drive and Sea World Way), San Diego

Corky, the longest-held captive orca in the world, was sold into the entertainment industry after being torn from her family off the coast of British Columbia in 1969. She was used for years as a breeding machine, but none of her calves survived past 47 days. Her last pregnancy ended in a miscarriage when her dead baby was found at the bottom of a concrete tank at SeaWorld.

“Corky belongs in the ocean, yet SeaWorld is stubbornly holding her prisoner in a cramped, chemically treated tank equivalent to the size of a bathtub for a human,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “No one can turn back the clock on her capture, but now, before she dies, she must be released into a seaside sanctuary, where she could dive deep, swim free, and even possibly reunite with her family.”

  • Unmissable, stilt-walking PETA supporters dressed as sprinkled sweet treats will visit the Big Apple on Friday to help climate activists hand out several thousand vegan doughnuts, along with information about economist Kate Raworth’s doughnut model of economics, an environmental action plan that asks everyone to stop eating animal-derived foods to not only save animals’ lives but also the planet.

When:    Friday, December 8, 12 noon

Where:    At the intersection of Seventh Avenue and W. 46th Street, New York

The action is in support of the Plant Based Treaty’s appeal to put food systems at the forefront of combating the climate catastrophe—an initiative that treaty representatives will discuss during a news conference at COP28 in Dubai on Sunday. COP28 is awash in meat and dairy industry representatives who realize that people are becoming aware of the impact of animal-based agriculture on greenhouse gas emissions.

“Animal-friendly foods mean a hole in one for our future, whereas meat and dairy are spelling disaster for the world, our arteries, and animals,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “A huge percentage of greenhouse gases, particularly methane, come from the meat and dairy industries, so every resident must take personal responsibility to dry up demand.”

PETA investigations have uncovered cruelty to sheep at over 100 wool operations worldwide—even on “responsible” farms, where shearers have been seen punching, stomping, kicking, and throwing around sheep. Shearers are often paid by volume, incentivizing them to work quickly, and sheep are often left bloodied and in pain as a result. The gaping wounds caused by careless shearers are then crudely stitched up—without painkillers. Fortunately, most top retailers offer clothing made of natural eco- and animal-friendly vegan fabrics, including organic cotton, linen, Tencel, and modal.

  • Four PETA supporters—including a local mom and a college student—were arrested and have been criminally charged with vandalism and trespassing after two of them cemented their feet into concrete blocks and chained themselves up outside Liberty Media’s headquarters in Englewood this morning to protest the company’s support of the Iditarod dog-sled race, in which more than 150 dogs have died. Photos and video footage are available here.

liberty media protest - members arrested

As Liberty employees watched, police used bolt cutters to cut two protesters—36-year-old local mother Chandra Fuller and 19-year-old San Diego State University student Mason Melito—out of the chains that were padlocked around their necks (similar to how dogs used in the Iditarod are kept chained when they’re not being forced to run). Authorities drilled the protesters out of the concrete and tore down a PETA banner calling on Liberty to cut ties with the Iditarod—but when the protest was over, the protesters’ message that Liberty “Funds Dog Deaths” scrawled in “blood” remained. The two other people arrested were bystanders filming the protest.

More details about today’s protest appear below.

Breaking: PETA Protesters Chained Up at Liberty Media HQ to Blast Ties to Deadly Dog-Sled Race

Englewood, Colo. — To protest Liberty Media’s support of the Iditarod dog-sled race, in which over 150 dogs have died, two PETA supporters have scrawled that Liberty “Funds Dog Deaths” in fake blood on the Englewood-based company’s headquarters sign and are chained by the neck to concrete posts in the snow—just as dogs used in the deadly race are kept chained when they’re not being forced to run. PETA notes that Alaska Airlines, Chrysler, Coca-Cola, Jack Daniel’s, Wells Fargo, ExxonMobil, and others stopped supporting the Iditarod after learning from PETA how dogs suffer and die because of the race, but Liberty subsidiary GCI, an internet service provider, has been sponsoring the notorious event to the tune of more than $250,000 every year.

“Liberty is financing a race in which dogs are forced to run across 1,000 miles of snow and ice until their paws become bloody and their bodies give out,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA won’t let up the pressure on Liberty until it joins the many companies that have dropped their sponsorship of this despicably cruel race.”

Up to half the dogs who start the Iditarod don’t finish it. During this year’s race—which had the smallest field of mushers in the event’s history—approximately 175 dogs were pulled off the trail due to exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes, leaving the remaining ones to work even harder. The race ended in controversy after the winner was caught on video dragging exhausted dogs toward a checkpoint.

The leading cause of death for dogs in the Iditarod is aspiration pneumonia—caused by inhaling their own vomit—and the race’s official death toll doesn’t include countless others who were killed simply because they weren’t fast enough or who died during the off-season while chained next to dilapidated boxes or plastic barrels in the bitter cold, a practice exposed in a PETA undercover investigation.

Liberty Media’s headquarters—the site of PETA’s “chaining”—is located at 12300 Liberty Blvd., Englewood.

PETA—which owns stock in Liberty and whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
