  • It’s that time of year again—the Oscats are back! For PETA’s eighth annual Oscat Awards, we’re honoring the 2024 films that put kindness to animals in the spotlight with powerful performances, exceptional storylines, and impressive special effects. So, without further ado, let’s roll out the red carpet and present the awards!

    Friendship for Good

    oscat 2024 award

PETA’s holding space—and a “Friendship for Good” Award—for Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who show compassion to animals on and off screen. The musical serves as an allegory for animal liberation, emphasized by green queen Elphaba’s call to action: “My heart’s desire is for you to help the animals. Something bad is happening to them, and they need you.” Erivo’s powerful performance as Elphaba—who fights for animal rights in Oz—spells out a clear message: That everyone deserves to live freely, no matter their species. Plus, the real-life besties are also real-life vegans—now that’s what we call leading change for good!

    Best Director

    oscats 2025 best director award

In Tim Burton’s stunning return to the macabre world of Beetlejuice, he once again showcased his masterful filmmaking by using numerous types of humane technology—like CGI, props, animatronics, figurines, and even casting his dog Levi— to craft an imaginative portrayal of animals that respects their rights as living beings while pushing the boundaries of cinematic artistry. With other nods to animal rights – like Astrid’s “Boycott Animal Testing” backpack and a “Protect the Animals” poster hanging in her dorm (yes, we noticed!) – Burton shows us that no decision is too small when it comes to creating animal-friendly cinema.

    Goats’ G.O.A.T.

    oscat 2024 goat's goat award

Julio Torres brought to screen a film only he could create. This beloved veganista used his platform to advocate for animals stuck in the cruel dairy industry. His choice to order the goat cheese salad without the goat cheese cleverly showed audiences that any meal can be made vegan. Ditching dairy, whether it comes from cows or goats, keeps families together, as dairy farmers regularly separate kids and calves from their mothers. If more people followed Julio’s example, there would be much less suffering. By standing up for goats, Julio proved he’s a G.O.A.T. for goats. He’s a goat’s G.O.A.T.!

    Best Actor

robbie williams best actor oscat award

And the award for Best Actor goes to… a CGI chimpanzee?! While 2024 featured many wonderful performances, Robbie Williams, as a CGI chimpanzee, captured our hearts and stole the show. Thanks in large part to PETA’s work, the use of chimpanzees in Hollywood is a thing of the past—and Robbie Williams’ biopic-with-a-twist is a glorious celebration of how far we’ve come. Director Chris Mindy threw down the gauntlet to other filmmakers, showing that humane technology is the only ethical way to depict primates onscreen and can be done to powerful, lifelike effect. While the chimpanzee refers to himself as “unevolved,” the lead performance in Better Man is anything but that. This film is yet another reminder that real primates aren’t “actors,” and VFX can give filmmakers the exact performance they want without any of the cruelty.

    Best Actress

cate blanchett oscat award best actress

This year’s Best Actress Oscat goes to the legendary Cate Blanchett. Her performance as Lilith stood out in a crowded field when she rescued Tiny Tina – who fittingly wore a pair of bunny ears –from a laboratory and saved her from cruel experiments. Of course, with Eli Roth in the director’s chair, it’s no surprise that the lead character would send an animal-friendly message to the world. With Eli’s writing and Cate’s brilliant performance, Borderlands tells audiences everywhere that it’s time to close the vault on deadly, painful tests on animals.

    Best Sleeper Hit

mufasa: the lion king oscat award for "best sleeper hit"

After a quiet opening weekend in December, the lion awoke, and audiences everywhere experienced Mufasa’s astounding artistry. We agreed wholeheartedly when Mufasa said, “Every being has a place in the circle of life.” Barry Jenkins and his creative team upheld Mufasa’s sage wisdom by using state-of-the-art, photorealistic animation to remind viewers of the endless possibilities for storytelling without exploiting real animals. It’s no surprise that the movie roared at the worldwide box office.

    Stick Up for Animals

oscat "stick up for animals" award

In one of the more moving films of the year, Tuesday gave audiences an unexpected look at the cruelty of glue traps, which cause immeasurable suffering to rats, mice, and other wildlife. The title character, Tuesday, finds our title macaw stuck in a glue trap, frees him, and washes the glue off his feet. There begins their close (we’ll not say more!) relationship. It’s common for these traps—which are now banned in some cities and countries, and even well-known retailers have stopped selling them – to indiscriminately trap wildlife, leaving them to suffer until they eventually die a slow, agonizing death from dehydration or starvation. Thanks to Daina O. Pusić’s beautiful script and Lola Petticrew’s moving performance, audiences got the clear message that a sure way to keep roaming animals safe is to scrap the trap!

    Pig’s Pick

julia garner oscat award "pigs pick"

Audiences get a taste of pig farming reality in Apartment 7A when Terry Gionoffrio— played by the incomparable Julia Garner – turns down bacon for breakfast, saying, “I don’t eat meat, but thank you.” She elaborates, “I grew up on a pig farm. It’s kind of hard to enjoy the smell of bacon when you’ve seen how it’s made.” Garner’s compassionate quip reminds us that the real horror in the Rosemary Baby’s prequel is how pigs suffer when the meat industry raises and slaughters them for their flesh. Pigs rejoiced at the meat-free moment, and so did we!

    Best Animated Feature

the wild robot best animated feature oscat award

Chris Sanders’ phenomenal film The Wild Robot moved and inspired audiences to respect the natural world. By dropping a robot into the forest and having him learn about Earth from wildlife, Sanders reminded audiences that animals have much to teach us. And they can teach us not under knives in a laboratory or on display at roadside zoos or marine parks, but in their natural habitat. Ahead of the film’s release, doting cat mom and star Lupita N’yongo took the messaging a step further by promoting vegan foods—because, after all, going vegan is the most important thing anyone can do to protect the planet. Check out Lupita’s PSA and learn about the joys of vegan living here.

    Mr. Mice Guy

    oscat award mr mice guy

Despite the countless breathtaking moments in Dune: Part One & Part Two, what stood out was the respect shown to the desert mouse. Indeed, the Fremen celebrate desert mice, called the Muad’Dib, for their intelligence and adaptability. While the species featured in the Dune-iverse is fictional, these are some of the countless qualities that make real mice so special. Paul Atreides, played by the wonderful Timothée Chalamet who gave a sand-sational performance, chooses the name Muad’Dib after he’s learned to live in harmony with his environment, an honor to mice everywhere. He’s no doubt a Mr. Mice Guy!

    Best Documentary

    best documentary 2024 oscat award

Kip Anderson and Kameron Waters’ profound documentary sheds light on a pressing question: why is cruelty to animals accepted around the world, even though compassion is the uniting core principle of all world religions? From Nazareth to the Vatican and New Delhi to Kathmandu, the pair question world-renowned theologians, Christian farmers, Indigenous shamans, archeologists, and religious leaders. What they find is a message of hope and compelling evidence that great religious leaders absolutely rejected harming and killing animals!

  • Victory! After meeting with PETA, Airbnb stopped selling tours and other experiences with camel and horse rides at the Giza pyramid complex. This decision comes after PETA Asia’s investigators blew the lid off of cruelty and abuse in Egypt’s tourism industry, in which workers beat exhausted horses forced to haul tourists in carriages and use camels as photo props. These animals are exploited in the blistering heat without adequate access to food, rest, shade, or veterinary care.

Photo of camel with wounds under their chin from a chain

Airbnb is joined by several other travel companies—including Black Tomato, Shore Excursions Group, ToursByLocals, Under30Experiences, World Travel Holdings, and others—which have also discontinued animal rides at the site.

Why Airbnb And Other Compassionate Companies Are Taking Action

Multiple PETA Asia investigations have revealed that at Egypt’s top tourist sites, workers routinely whip horses while making them tow tourists in the blazing sun. Handlers deny animals adequate rest and violently strike them when they struggle to keep going. The animals are constantly hungry and tired and are denied veterinary care for wounds and injuries. Investigators saw injured and malnourished horses eating from garbage dumps and found the bodies of dead horses discarded at trash sites outside the pyramids of Giza.

horse corpse being eaten by birds as shown in PETA Asia investigation into camel and horse abuse in tourism industry in Egypt

When camels can no longer be exploited for rides or used as photo props, they’re often sold to slaughterhouses to be killed for their flesh. PETA Asia’s footage showed workers slashing camels’ throats in plain view of other animals—likely causing panic to these highly social and sensitive herd animals—and sometimes even in front of children. One camel continued to kick for four agonizing minutes after a worker slashed their throat.

The only way to ensure camels and horses don’t suffer is to stop exploiting them altogether. The growing list of companies that refuse to support the egregious cruelty in Egypt’s tourism industry marks a hopeful shift towards compassionate, animal-free attractions. Innovations such as electric carts, cable cars, ATV bike rides, and others can provide tourism businesses with a source of income that doesn’t involve animal suffering.

Camels and Horses Don’t ‘Belong Anywhere’ Near Abusive Tourist Sites

Camels and horses are emotional, family-oriented animals who form long-term friendships, protect their herd members, and nurture their young. Camels are known to “blow” on each other’s faces as a friendly greeting, and mother horses sing lullabies to their precious babies. These animals have unique personalities and can experience love, pain, and fear. They do not want to be worked nearly to death or used as photo props.

YOU can take action by never participating in tourism involving animals—including camel and horse-drawn carriage rides. Please urge Egyptian officials to impose a ban on using horses and camels to entertain and transport visitors at the pyramids and other tourist sites:

  • After lengthy, torrid and emotional debate a critical decision for the future of Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau is being made in March. One party will celebrate; the other will slink back to the drawing board. But will it really settle the great Auckland stadium debate?

    SPECIAL REPORT: By Chris Schulz

It resembles a building from Blade Runner. It looks like somewhere the Avengers might assemble. It is, believes Paul Nisbet, the future.

“It’s innovative, it’s groundbreaking, it’s something different,” says the driving force behind Te Tōangaroa, a new stadium mooted for downtown Auckland.

He has spent 13 years dreaming up this moon shot, and it shows. “We have an opportunity here to deliver something special for the country.”

Located behind Spark Arena, Te Tōangaroa — also called “Quay Park” — is Nisbet’s big gamble, the stadium he believes Tāmaki Makaurau needs to sustain the city’s live sport and entertainment demands for the next 100 years.

His is a concept as grand as it gets, a U-shaped dream with winged rooftops that will sweep around fans sitting in the stands, each getting unimpeded views out over the Waitematā Harbour and Rangitoto Island.

An artist's impression of Quay Park stadium, Auckland.
Located behind Spark Arena, Te Tōangaroa is also called “Quay Park”. Image: Te Tōangaroa

Nisbet calls his vision a “gateway for the world,” a structure so grand he believes it would attract the biggest sports teams, stars and sponsors to Aotearoa while offering visitors a must-see tourist destination. Nestled alongside residential areas, commercial zones and an All Blacks-themed hotel, designs show a retractable roof protecting 55,000 punters from the elements and a sky turret towering over neighbouring buildings.

He’s gone all in on this. Nisbet’s quit his job, assembled a consortium of experts — called Cenfield MXD — and attracted financial backers to turn his vision into a reality. It is, Nisbet believes, the culmination of his 30-year career working in major stadiums, including 11 years as director of Auckland Stadiums.

“I’ve had the chance to travel extensively,” he says. “I’ve been to over 50 stadiums around the world.”

Tāmaki Makaurau, he says, needs Te Tōangaroa — urgently. If approved, it will be built over an ageing commercial space and an unused railway yard sitting behind Spark Arena, what Nisbet calls “a dirty old brownfields location that’s sapping the economic viability out of the city”.

He calls it a “regeneration” project. “You couldn’t mistake you’re in Auckland, or New Zealand, when you see images of it,” he says.

The All Blacks are on board, says Nisbet, and they want Te Tōangaroa built by 2029 in time for a Lions tour. (The All Blacks didn’t respond to a request for comment, but former players John Kirwan and Sean Fitzpatrick have backed the team moving to Te Tōangaroa.)

Concert promoters are on board too, says Nisbet. He believes Te Tōangaroa would end the Taylor Swift debacle that’s seen her and many major acts skip us in favour of touring Australian stadiums.

“It will be one of those special places that international acts just have to play,” he says.

The problem? Nisbet’s made a gamble that may not pay off. In March, a decision is due to be made about the city’s stadium future. Building Te Tōangaroa, with an estimated construction time of six years and a budget of $1 billion, is just one option.

The other, Eden Park, has 125 years of history, a long-standing All Blacks record and a huge number of supporters behind it — as well as a CEO willing to do anything to win.

The stadium standing in Te Tōangaroa’s way
Stand in Eden Park’s foyer for a few minutes and history will smack you in the face. It’s there in the photos framed on the wall from a 1937 All Blacks test match. It’s sitting in Anton Oliver’s rugby boots from 2001, presumably fumigated and placed inside a glass case.

More recent history is on display too, with floor-to-ceiling photographs showing off concerts headlined by by Ed Sheeran and Six60, a pivot only possible since 2021.

Soon, the man in charge of all of this arrives. “Very few people have seen this space,” says Nick Sautner, the Eden Park CEO who shakes my hand, pulls me down a hallway and invites me into a secret room in the bowels of Eden Park. With gleaming wood panels, leather couches and top-shelf liquor, Sautner’s proud of his hidden bar.

“It’s invite-only . . . a VIP experience,” says Sautner, whose Australian accent remains easily identifiable despite seven years at the helm of Eden Park.

The future of Eden Park if a refurb is granted.
The future of Eden Park if a refurb is granted. Image: YouTube

This bar, he says, is just one of the many innovations Eden Park has undertaken in recent years. Built in 1900, the Mt Eden stadium remains the home of the All Blacks — but Eden Park is no longer considered a specialty sports venue.

Up to 70 percent of the stadium’s revenue now comes from non-sporting activities, Sautner confirms. You can golf, abseil onto the rooftops and stay the night in dedicated glamping venues. It’s also become promoters’ choice for major concerts, with Coldplay and Luke Combs recently hosting multiple shows there. “We will consider any innovation you can imagine,” Sautner tells me. “We’re a blank canvas.”

Throughout our interview, Sautner refers to Eden Park as the “national stadium”. He’s upbeat and on form, rattling off statistics and renovations from memory. His social media feeds — especially LinkedIn — are full of posts promoting the stadium’s achievements. He’ll pick up the phone to anyone who will talk to him.

“Whatsapp is the best way of contacting me,” he says. Residents have his number and can call directly with complaints. After our interview, Sautner passes me his business card then follows it up with an email making sure I have everything I need. “My phone’s always on,” he assures me.

He may not admit it, but Sautner’s doing all of this in an attempt to get ahead of what’s shaping up as the biggest crisis of Eden Park’s 125 years. If Te Tōangaroa is chosen in March, Eden Park — as well as Albany’s North Harbour Stadium and Onehunga’s Go Media Stadium – will all take a back seat.

If Eden Park loses the All Blacks and their 31-year unbeaten record, then there’s no other word for it: the threat is existential.

The future of Eden Park if a refurb is granted.
Called Eden Park 2.1, Sautner is promoting a three-stage renovation plan. Image: YouTube

Ask Sautner if he’s losing sleep over his stadium’s future and he shakes his head. To him, Te Tōangaroa’s numbers don’t stack up. “If someone can make the business model work for an alternative stadium in Auckland, I’m all for activating the waterfront,” he says.

Then he poses a series of questions: “How many events a year would a downtown stadium hold? Forty-five?” he asks. “So 320 other days a year, what’s going to be in that stadium?”

He is, of course, biased. But Sautner believes upgrading Eden Park is the right move. Called Eden Park 2.1, Sautner is promoting a three-stage renovation plan that includes building a $100 million retractable rooftop. A new North Stand would lift Eden Park’s capacity to 70,000, and improved function facilities and a pedestrian bridge would turn the venue into “a fortress . . . capable of hosting every event”.

He’s veering into corporate speak, but Sautner sees the vision clearly. With his annual concert consent recently raised from six to 12 shows, he already thinks he’s got it in the bag, “Eden Park has the land, it has the consent, it has the community, it has the infrastructure,” he says. “I’m very confident Eden Park is going to be here for another 100 years.”

Instead of a drink, Sautner offers RNZ a personal stadium tour that takes us through the exact same doors that open when the All Blacks emerge onto the hallowed turf. There, blinking in the sunlight, Sautner sweeps his arms around the stadium and grins. “I get up every day and I think of my family,” he says. “Then I think, ‘How can I make Eden Park better?”

The stadium debate: ‘It began when the dinosaurs died out’
It is, says Shane Henderson, an argument for the ages. It never seems to quit. How long have Aucklanders been feuding about stadiums? “It began when the dinosaurs died out,” jokes Henderson.

For the past year, he’s been chairing a working group that will make the decision on Auckland’s stadium future. That group whittled four options down to the current two, eliminating a sunken waterfront stadium, and another based in Silo Park.

He’s doing this because Wayne Brown asked him to. “The mayor said, ‘We need to say to the public, ‘This is our preferred option for a stadium for the city.’” It’s taken over Henderson’s life. Every summer barbecue has turned into a forum for people to share their views.

“People say, “Why don’t you do this?’” he says. Henderson won’t be drawn on which way he’s leaning ahead of March’s decision, but he’s well aware of the stakes. “We’re talking about the future of our city for generations to come,” he says. “It’s natural feelings are going to run high.”

That’s true. As I researched this story, the main parties engaged in a back-and-forth discussion that became increasingly heated. Jim Doyle, from Te Tōangaroa’s Cenfield MXD team, described Eden Park’s situation as desperate.

“Eden Park can’t fund itself . . . it’s got no money, it’s costing ratepayers,” he said. Doyle alleged the stadium “wouldn’t be fit for purpose”. “You’re going to have to spend probably close to $1 billion to upgrade it.” Asked what should happen to Eden Park should the decision go Te Tōangaroa’s way, Doyle shrugged his shoulders. “Turn it into a retirement village.”

Eden Park’s Sautner immediately struck back. Yes, he admits Eden Park owes $40 million to Auckland Council, calling that debt a “legacy left over from the Rugby World Cup 2011”. But he denied most of the consortium’s claims.

“Eden Park does not receive any funding or subsidies from Auckland ratepayers,” Sautner said in a written statement. He confirmed renovations had already begun. “Over the past three years, the Trust has invested more than $30 million to enhance infrastructure and upgrade facilities . . . creating flexible spaces to meet evolving market demands.”

Sautner said Doyle’s statement was evidence of his team’s inexperience. “We are extremely disappointed that comments of this nature have been made,” he said. “They are factually incorrect and highlight Quay Park consortium’s lack of understanding of stadium economics.”

Do we even need to do this?
As the stadium debate turns into a showdown, major stars continue to skip Aotearoa in favour of huge Australian shows, with Katy Perry, Kylie Minogue and Oasis all giving us a miss this year. New Zealand music fans are reluctantly spending large sums on flights and accommodation if they want to see them. Until Metallica arrives in November, there are no stadium shows booked; just three of Eden Park’s 12 allotted concert slots are taken this year.

Yet, Auckland City councillors will soon study feasibility reports being submitted by both stadium options.

On March 24, Henderson, the working group chair, says councillors will come together to “thrash it out” and vote for their preferred option. There will only be one winner, and The New Zealand Herald reports either building Te Tōangaroa or Eden Park 2.1 is likely to cost more than $1 billion. Either we’re spending that on a brand new waterfront stadium, or we’re upgrading an old one.

“Is that the best use of that money?” asks David Benge. The managing director for events company TEG Live doesn’t believe Tāmaki Makaurau needs another stadium because it’s barely using those it already has. He has questions.

“I understand the excitement around a shiny new toy, but to what end?” he asks. “Can Auckland sustain a show at Go Media Stadium, a show at Western Springs, a show at Eden Park, and a show at this new stadium on the same night — or even in the same week?”

Benge doesn’t believe Te Tōangaroa would entice more artists to play here either. “I’m yet to meet an artist who’s going to be swayed by how iconic a venue is,” he says. Bigger problems include the size of our population and the strength of our dollar.

No matter the venue, “you’re still incurring the same expenses to produce the show,” he says. Instead, he suggests Pōneke as the next city needing a new venue. “If you could wave a magic wand and invest in a 10,000-12,000-capacity indoor arena in Wellington, that would be fantastic,” he says.

An artist's impression of Quay Park stadium, Auckland.
Would a new stadium really lure big artists to NZ? Image: Te Tōangaroa

Live Nation, the touring juggernaut that hosts most of the country’s stadium shows, didn’t respond to a request for comment. Other promoters canvassed by RNZ offered mixed views. Some wanted a new stadium, while others wanted a refurbished one. Every single one of them said that any new stadium needed to be built with concerts — not sport — in mind.

“We’re fitting a square peg in a round hole,” one said about the production costs involved in trucking temporary stages into Eden Park or Go Media Stadium. “Turf replacement can add hundreds of thousands — if not $1 million — to your bottom line,” said another.

Some wanted something else entirely. Veteran promoter Campbell Smith pointed out Auckland Council is seeking input for a potential redevelopment of Western Springs. One mooted option is turning it into a home ground for the rapidly rising football club Auckland FC. Smith doesn’t agree with that. “I think it’s a really attractive option for music and festivals,” he says. “It’s got a large footprint, it’s easily accessible, it’s close to the city … It would be a travesty if it was developed entirely for sport.”

One thing is for certain: a decision on this lengthy, torrid and emotional topic is being made in March. One party will celebrate; the other will slink back to the drawing board. Will it finally end the great Auckland stadium debate? That’s a question that seems easier to answer than any of the others.

  • Nearly seven years ago, the world watched in sorrow as a Southern Resident orca mother—Tahlequah, or “J35”—carried her dead calf through the ocean for 17 days, apparently overcome with anguish. Now, she seems to be in mourning again over the loss of another newborn.

Seemingly resistant to let go, Tahlequah drapes the body of her dead baby over her head and dives down to recover them when they start to sink. Using much of her energy to keep their body afloat, she’s apparently putting off her own needs, such as foraging for food—which experts have said is an expression of profound grief.

In a remarkable display of devotion and solidarity, Tahlequah’s sister and other fellow tight-knit pod members stay close by her side as she clings to her lost calf—just like they did in 2018, when they helped her carry her calf’s body for more than two weeks. Experts observing this ritual have expressed the belief that these animals were holding “their own version of a wake or funeral.”

What Humans Can Learn From Tahlequah’s Story

A mother orca carrying her dead baby for miles through the ocean shows the depth of their bonds—making it all the more harrowing that orcas trapped in marine park tanks are denied the chance to form such meaningful relationships or even experience the love of a family. In 2018, when the loss of Tahlequah’s calf garnered international attention, the plight of Southern Resident orcas—who are on the brink of extinction, according to scientists—came to the forefront.

PETA continued to call for the release of Lolita—a Southern Resident orca who spent more than 50 years trapped at a marine park—from the Miami Seaquarium, where she languished in the world’s smallest orca tank. In 2023, Lolita died at the facility, never getting the chance to return to the ocean in a seaside sanctuary and possibly reunite with her family.

Tell SeaWorld to Empty the Tanks

Tahlequah’s story is one of the many displays of orcas’ complex lives. Orca populations all over the world have unique cultures marked by distinct dialects, foraging techniques, social structures, and customs. At marine parks like SeaWorld, these intelligent, emotional animals spend their days swimming in endless circles.

One of these suffering orcas is known as Corky—the last Northern Resident in captivity. In 1969, she was violently torn from her family off the coast of British Columbia and sold into the entertainment industry. We can only imagine the grief this would likely have caused her mother, who may have spent days calling out and searching for her.

Corky has spent 55 years imprisoned at marine parks. While her free pod members band together to chase salmon, explore the vast ocean, and, in the summer, visit the beaches near Vancouver Island to rub their bodies over pebbles on the shoreline—a tradition unique to Northern Residents—Corky’s life consists of forced performances and concrete tanks.

For years, she was used to breed more orcas into miserable confinement—but none of her calves survived past 47 days. Unlike Tahlequah, when Corky’s calves died, she didn’t have the support of her family members by her side. Her last pregnancy ended in a miscarriage when her dead baby was found at the bottom of a tank at SeaWorld.

PETA and our supporters continue to urge SeaWorld to develop a firm and rapid plan to transfer Corky to a seaside sanctuary. In her home waters off British Columbia, a team of experts is already preparing one for her. If released into a sanctuary in these waters, Corky could finally feel the ocean currents, hear the songs and calls of other free orcas, and possibly communicate with her siblings. But for all this to happen, SeaWorld needs to act now.

Take action for Corky and other animals suffering at SeaWorld:

  • On each day of Hanukkah, we eat latkes, play dreidel, exchange gifts, and light the menorah to remember the Jewish people’s struggle for religious freedom. Known as the “Festival of Lights,” Hanukkah celebrates an ancient miracle: For eight long nights, a candle burned bright with just a tiny bit of oil as the Jews cleansed and rededicated their holy temple long ago.

lit hanukkah menorah in a dark room

Hanukkah is a time to reflect on the plight of all sentient beings—and that includes the suffering of our fellow animals who are used in experiments, killed for their flesh and skin, exploited for entertainment, and abused in other horrific ways. That’s why we must mark this long-held tradition by doing mitzvahs—or good deeds for others.

Here are eight actions you can take for animals on each day of Hanukkah.

Night One: Object to Oreo Maker’s Experiments on Mice

The maker of Oreo has paid experimenters to conduct pointless and cruel “nutritional science” tests in which they force mice to eat human feces before killing and slicing them open. Please urge the company to end its experiments on animals and join PETA’s revolutionary Eat Without Experiments program, which makes it easy for consumers to see which food and beverage companies do or do not test on animals:

Night Two: Tell the Thai Government to Terminate Forced Monkey Labor

Multiple PETA Asia investigations have exposed that Thailand’s coconut industry relies on the forced labor of endangered monkeys. These highly social animals naturally live and thrive in large groups—but in the Thai coconut industry, they’re violently torn away from their families and chained in isolation at “training schools” without adequate food, water, or companionship. Handlers often whip or beat them to force them to obey.

    Baby monkeys huddled together

Urge the Thai government to shut down all “monkey schools” and ban monkey labor immediately:

Night Three: Take PETA’s Three-Week Vegan Challenge

Animals do not want to be violently slaughtered for their flesh, forcibly manually impregnated and separated from their precious babies for their milk, or crammed into filthy, windowless sheds on misleadingly labeled “cage-free” farms. On farms and in slaughterhouses, billions of sensitive, feeling individuals suffer in these conditions every day. YOU can spare nearly 200 animals annually, reduce your carbon footprint, and boost your health by going vegan. Get started by taking PETA’s three-week vegan challenge, and encourage your friends and family to do the same:

Night Four: Fight Off False ‘Humane Washing’ Labels

PETA investigations have revealed filth, suffering, and abuse at all 12 “animal welfare certified” locations we’ve investigated—including Plainville Farms, where PETA’s investigators witnessed workers violently beating and sexually abusing birds. Still, representatives from self-proclaimed “animal protection” groups—including the Humane Society of the United States, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Compassion in World Farming—sit on the board of directors for the Global Animal Partnership, the group behind misleading “animal welfare certified” labels. This humane-washing certification means nothing to the animals who suffer immensely on farms. Tell “animal welfare” organizations to stop propping up factory farming and to cut ties with the Global Animal Partnership:

    Night Five: Free Corky

Corky, the longest-held captive orca in the world, has been imprisoned at marine parks for 55 years. Today, she swims in endless circles in a tiny tank at SeaWorld San Diego, while her siblings and other members of her pod swim free in the ocean.

PETA’s extensive campaign for Corky has included bold demonstrations, public service announcements with celebrities such as Pamela Anderson and Christopher von Uckermann, a constitutional lawsuit on Corky’s behalf, and even a 150-mile relay run from Los Angeles to San Diego. More than 200,000 of our supporters have joined PETA in urging SeaWorld to release Corky into a seaside sanctuary, where she could finally feel ocean currents, hear the songs and calls of other free orcas, and possibly communicate with her siblings. Learn more about Corky and speak up for her before it’s too late:

Night Six: Sponsor a Sturdy Doghouse

As temperatures plummet, dogs who are left tethered or chained outside 24/7 struggle to survive without proper shelter to protect them from the elements. Unable to escape the freezing cold, these dogs are vulnerable to frostbite, hypothermia, and even death. Often, these lonely animals are deprived of even the basics—such as food, water, and veterinary care. All winter long, PETA’s fieldworkers deliver dry, fluffy straw bedding and sturdy wooden doghouses to dogs neglected outside.

    Jada After new doghouse

Although a doghouse is no substitute for a real home in which dogs could be warm, comfortable, and surrounded by their human families, it can mean the difference between life and death to dogs who previously had no shelter. Help us continue this vital work by sponsoring a doghouse:

Night Seven: Speak Out Against Coach’s Use of Cows’ Skins

Every year, more than a billion gentle cows and other animals are slaughtered so that their skins can be used to make handbags and other leather accessories. A PETA exposé of the world’s largest leather processor—which has been linked to Coach—showed that workers brand calves on the face, beat cows and bulls, and shock them with electric prods. The leather industry also contributes to the climate catastrophe, land devastation, deforestation, pollution, water contamination, and loss of biodiversity. Join PETA in urging Coach to stop using animal- and planet-killing leather:

Night Eight: End the Abuse of Camels and Horses in Egypt

In Egypt’s tourism industry, horses and camels are forced to carry tourists at the pyramids in the sweltering heat. PETA’s latest mini documentary revealed that workers forcefully beat the exhausted animals, who were denied adequate food, rest, shade, and proper veterinary care. Injured and malnourished horses were seen eating from garbage dumps, and the bodies of dead horses were found discarded every day at trash sites outside gates to the pyramids of Giza.

Following pressure from thousands of PETA supporters, Egyptian officials launched a program that aims to provide veterinary care for animals used at archaeological sites throughout the country. While this could mark some positive change, the only reliable way to ensure that horses and camels don’t suffer is to keep them away from the pyramids altogether. Please join PETA in urging Egyptian officials to ban the use of these animals in the tourism industry:

  • Crazy victory! In the wake of HBO Max’s explosive docuseries Chimp Crazy and an escalating campaign by PETA, Limbani the chimpanzee has been rescued! Kept at the Zoological Wildlife Foundation—a notorious roadside zoo featured in Tiger King—he was one of the last chimpanzees in the U.S. kept in isolation from others of his own species. Now, Limbani is at the spacious, lush sanctuary Save the Chimps, where he will never be used for cruel photo-ops or exploited in any way ever again.

limbani the chimpanzee playing on a toy firetruck at sanctuary save the chimps
Limbani in a quarantine enclosure at Save the Chimps.

This win marks an even bigger milestone for PETA: Our work has contributed to the rescues of 25 chimpanzees from roadside zoos and the “pet” trade so far. PETA has pledged a donation toward his lifetime care at Save the Chimps, where he will be able to explore, play, climb, and socialize with others of his kind.

Limbani Endured a Life of Exploitation and Deprivation

Chimpanzees are highly social animals who, in nature, share lifelong bonds with their families. Limbani was torn away from his mother when he was just four days old and was forced to live alone since then. For years, the Zoological Wildlife Foundation exploited him for photo ops and dangerous public encounters. When the roadside zoo wasn’t treating Limbani like an Instagram prop, he was relegated to a small cage.

In 2020, the Zoological Wildlife Foundation was issued a warning by state authorities after Limbani bit a child. The facility was also instructed to stop allowing public contact with the chimpanzee, but evidence from social media indicates that it continued, even as he grew larger and more dangerous.

PETA’s Work Put Limbani’s Rescue in Motion

PETA submitted numerous complaints alerting state officials to Limbani’s continued exploitation at the Zoological Wildlife Foundation. And, after the release of Chimp Crazy—which put national attention on the dangers and inherent cruelty in private ownership of chimpanzees—PETA offered a reward of up $10,000 for evidence that would result in Limbani’s confiscation by law-enforcement authorities and enlisted nearly 200,000 of our members and supporters to plead for Limbani’s release.

More Rescues Are on the Horizon

To date, PETA has facilitated the transfer of 24 other chimpanzees—including seven who were held in solitary confinement; one who had eye issues after being held in the dark for years; and one whose teeth were all pulled to make him easier to handle—to accredited sanctuaries.

Limbani is the latest among the more than two dozen chimpanzees whose rescues PETA has helped facilitate—and he won’t be the last. YOU can help us by calling on your federal representatives to cosponsor the bipartisan Captive Primate Safety Act, which would ban private ownership, private breeding, and all commercial activity involving primates used in the pet trade.

PETA’s $10,000 reward still stands for information leading to the confiscation by law-enforcement authorities of any of the other (fewer than 100) chimpanzees across the country who are still languishing at roadside zoos or in the pet trade—including Bow, the last solitary chimpanzee held in a private home, and Ricky, a chimpanzee exploited for photo shoots and commercials by the notorious exhibitor Pam Rosaire-Zoppe.

Whistleblowers with information about Bow, Limbani, Ricky, or other captive chimpanzees are encouraged to contact PETA.

  • Legendary actor and Academy Award nominee James Cromwell sent an urgent letter to Egypt’s minister of tourism and antiquities, Sherif Fathy, calling on him to end the widespread abuse of camels and horses who are forced to haul tourists at the pyramids in the sweltering heat.

Animals Beaten, Malnourished in Egypt’s Tourism Industry

In the letter, Cromwell notes that the agency promised meaningful changes after a 2019 PETA Asia investigation first exposed the appalling abuse of horses and camels at the country’s top tourist sites. Yet PETA’s latest mini documentary shows that handlers violently whipped exhausted horses in front of the tourists they had been forced to haul in the blistering sun—with no access to food, rest, adequate shade, or proper veterinary care.

man whipping a horse carrying a carriage as seen in peta expose of egypt tourism industry

Investigators saw injured and malnourished horses eating from garbage dumps and found the bodies of dead horses at trash sites outside the pyramids of Giza.

“When their bodies give out, these gentle, sensitive animals are left to die and their bodies are dumped in the piles of trash just behind the pyramid complex,” writes Cromwell. “While it’s encouraging to hear that at PETA’s urging, you have introduced a few electric vehicles and added some water for the animals, Egyptian authorities have chosen to shut their eyes to the extreme and obvious cruelty that horses and camels are subjected to.”

horse corpse being eaten by birds as shown in PETA Asia investigation into camel and horse abuse in tourism industry in Egypt

PETA’s mini documentary revealed that market traders punched camels and beat the animals with batons and that one trader threw sand into a camel’s face. A dead camel was tied by their feet to a truck and dragged through the streets, and another was found dead in the middle of a road with their throat slashed open. When camels were no longer considered “useful,” they were often hauled to a slaughterhouse, where workers slit their throats while they were still conscious.

“Egypt is a magical place with so much to see and experience, but no one wants to have cruelty to animals included in their travel plans,” Cromwell’s letter concludes. “Please end the suffering at the pyramids now.”

Tourist Attractions That Abuse Animals Belong ‘Six Feet Under’

Horses and camels are highly social animals who form lifelong friendships within their herds. These sensitive, emotional animals do not want to be forced to carry tourists or used as photo props. Please join Cromwell and PETA in urging Egyptian officials to ban the use of these animals in the tourism industry:

  • Glass blowing? Bungee jumping? Solid date ideas! But camel rides give us the “ick.”

In a recent episode of Netflix’s Love Is Blind, Ashley and Tyler rode camels during their getaway to Mexico. But just like Ashley didn’t really know Tyler, many folks don’t realize how camels suffer when they’re used as tourist traps.

Camels in Sahara desert, Merzouga, Morocco, Africa

Camels are extremely friendly and typically live in groups called caravans. They express their feelings with groans, moans, and roars. And despite their calm, serious demeanor, they can be playful, especially when young.

But camels exploited for rides don’t get to do anything natural and important to them. When you see camels on reality TV, the reality is they’re often forced to comply through violence and fear. So in honor of Love Is Blind Season 7, Episode 7, we’ve compiled a list of seven reasons why Ashley and Tyler shouldn’t turn a blind eye to camels’ suffering—and neither should you.

    1. Camels Are Bred Without Consent

Just like the couples in Love Is Blind, camels choose their own partner in nature. But when humans exploit camels, breeders often use electroejaculation to collect semen. This undignified, painful procedure involves a handler restraining the male camel with ropes and electrocuting him using an anal probe to force ejaculation. Females are then artificially inseminated without consent.

    2. Baby Camels Are Branded

Baby camels are often branded with scalding-hot irons, causing serious pain. Other methods include tattooing the animals’ tender inner lips and jabbing their ears with tags.

      3. Trainers Break the Spirits of Young Camels

When camels are just 2½ years old, handlers break their will. Trainers often knock them to the ground and pin them down while another trainer ties them up.

Camel market where camel is screaming

        4. Trainers May Starve Camels

Love Is Blind has been accused of not feeding the cast. But camels are often starved and confined as part of “training.” As part of breaking their spirits, trainers may strap camels to a tree or another object where they can’t see anyone. They don’t give them any food during this time.

          5. Camels Are Painfully Dragged Along

Can you imagine someone dragging you around with a long stick or rope jammed into your nose? Trainers put ropes and sticks through camels’ sensitive noses to lead them around for tourist rides, forcing them to comply through pain. They also tie their lower jaws to control the animals’ movements, which can cause serious health problems.

Photo of camel with wounds under their chin from a chain

          6. Handlers Tie Camels’ Legs and Beat Them With Sticks

Hobbling camels is also part of cruel training. A PETA Asia investigation into the Birqash Camel Market in Egypt revealed that camels are often tied up tightly to prevent them from moving or escaping. Some are even tied to vehicles and dragged through the dirt. In a BBC video showcasing camel training methods, a camel is struck with a stick to get them to accept a rider. And PETA Asia’s research into camel rides found that camels endure severe abuse, including being beaten in sensitive areas, resulting in bloody wounds without receiving any veterinary care.

          Camel with their legs tied

          7. Camels Are Killed When No Longer Profitable

While the Love Is Blind stars may look forward to one day retiring in a relaxing atmosphere, there’s no retirement for camels exploited for tourism. When their bodies are worn out and they’re no longer profitable, camels are often killed for meat. In slaughterhouses, they may be killed with axes or metal bars. Footage shows bloody camels groaning while they’re repeatedly hit in the face and on the neck.

A camel on their knees as they are about to be slaughtered

Another Love Is Blind contestant, Stephen, said riding a camel was at the top of his bucket list. Don’t be a Stephen. Never pay for camel rides or photos with animals, and speak out if someone asks you to participate in any activity that uses animals. Don’t turn a blind eye to suffering.

Help camels right now by urging Egypt’s minister of tourism and antiquities to ban camel rides and other animal tourism.

        • It’s International Carrot Day! The best way to show that you carrot all about animals, the planet, and your health is to go vegan—and PETA’s charismatic mascot Chris P. Carrot is rooting for everyone to make the compassionate switch.

From gentle mother cows who protectively coddle their young to curious hens who establish meaningful friendships, every animal is someone with their own feelings, interests, personalities, and needs. The meat, egg, dairy, and fishing industries exploit and kill billions of these sensitive living beings every year while destroying the environment. The United Nations has said for many years that a global shift toward vegan living is necessary to combat the climate catastrophe and other environmental crises.

For International Carrot Day, join Chris in his mission to spare animals, protect Mother Earth, and bolster human health by going vegan.

Previous winners include Jenna Ortega, Jordan Peele, Zendaya, Tom Hanks, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Oscats offer a mix of traditional categories and some unique awards. So, without further ado, let’s roll out the red carpet and present the awards!

          Best Fauxjo Mojo Fashion Moments

PETA Oscats award for Best Fauxjo Mojo Fashion Moments 2024

Costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s decision to incorporate animal-friendly fashion in Barbie sets a new standard for ethical filmmaking. From Margot Robbie’s vegan pink Birkenstocks and faux-fur boots to Ryan Gosling’s vegan leather cowboy boots and “Fauxjo Mojo Mink” fur-free coat, these fashion moments are as stylish as they are influential. So next time you’re dressing up, remember that you can rock Barbie and Ken’s style without hurting animals.

          Best Supporting Actor

PETA Oscats award for Best Supportiing Actor 2024

In the star-studded world of Asteroid City, where every detail screams brilliance, there’s one star that truly shined: the adorable roadrunner puppet. Crafted and puppeteered by Andy Gent and his team, the Roadrunner’s lifelike movements and looks stole the show with a performance worthy of Best Supporting Actor. PETA works with filmmakers to encourage them to choose innovative and humane ways to depict animals, but sometimes, it’s classic artistry that steals the spotlight. The Roadrunner reminds us of the endless possibilities for storytelling without exploiting animals.

          Best Original Song

PETA Oscats award for Best Original Song 2024

In Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, the technology isn’t the only facet of the film that was subject to a 21st century update. The new song features a food-for-thought moment as Ariel sings, “Are we only food for slaughter. Is this life on land?” with fish hanging from hooks painted on tiles in the background. These lyrics will undoubtedly inspire audiences to consider who they put on their plates. Check out these Flounder-approved fish-free recipes.

          Best ‘Nice to Mice’ Moment

PETA Oscats award for Best Nice to Mice Moment 2024

In a heartwarming scene, The Baker reminds us of the importance of compassion toward all creatures. Delphi, played by Emma Ho, finds a mouse caught in a trap. She rushes to free the mouse and send them to safety. “America’s Sweetheart” and adopted dog dad Ron Perlman describes the film as depicting “a reluctant hero do[ing] anything to protect the innocent.” We applaud director Jonathan Sobol for relying on CGI rather than using a real mouse from a supplier who would likely relegate the animal to life in a cage.

          Best Picture

PETA Oscats award for Best Picture 2024

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget takes home the top prize for its unflinching depiction of the horrors of factory farming and the humane-washing that corporations use to manipulate consumers. The film doesn’t just scratch the surface. It digs deep into the lives of chickens, reminding us that they are sentient beings deserving of compassion and respect. Using instantly recognizable animation and a star-studded cast, director Sam Fell—who stopped eating meat after doing research for the film—shows us that chickens are clever, resourceful animals who just want to live in peace.

          Best Director

PETA Oscats award for Best Director 2024

PETA friend Eli Roth served up a chilling Thanksgiving tale that forces audiences to confront the reality of their holiday feast. With Roth at the helm, Thanksgiving becomes more than just a slasher flick: It’s a wake-up call to the horrors of animal agriculture. With set pieces that could fit right in at one of PETA’s demonstrations, the film will undoubtedly lead to the sparing of turkeys, lambs, cows, and pigs as audiences witness the horrors of the holiday with a familiar face on the menu. Check out how to plan the perfect “ThanksVegan” dinner.

          PETA Pick

PETA Oscats award for PETA Pick 2024

This year’s PETA Pick, Reptile, takes the vegan cake for its riveting script cocrafted by Benicio Del Toro. Keeping audiences on the edge of their seats, this film also warmed our hearts, especially with the inclusion of longtime animal advocate Alicia Silverstone in the cast. But what truly sets it apart is the vegan baking scene. Picture this: A detective’s wife proudly declares that “Judy (played by Alicia) made this cake, everyone, and it is all vegan,” before the detective adds, “No animals were harmed making this cake.” This film serves up a slice of compassion.

          Best Actor

PETA Oscats award for Best Actor 2024

Bella Ramsey’s performance as Molly, the wide-eyed, curious protagonist in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, strikes an emotional chord with audiences of all ages and gives a powerful insight into the lives of the billions of chickens slaughtered for food each year. Acting for animal rights is no new feat for Bella—they stand up for animals in art and life, which is why they were named PETA’s 2023 Most Beautiful Vegan.

          Speciesism Shredders

PETA Oscats award for Speciesism Shredders 2024

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem boldly champions animal rights with subtle nods and gripping storytelling. From a “GO VEGAN” license plate to Master Splinter’s correction of anti-speciesist language, the film sheds light on the horrors of vivisection and exploitation. Yet the heart of the film lies in the turtles’ quest for acceptance, earning it our Speciesism Shredders award. It reminds us that Every Animal Is Someone.

Best Team-UpPETA Oscats award for Best Team-Up 2024

Celebrating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s impactful anti-vivisection message, we gave the “Not a Number” Award to director James Gunn, who we also honored as our 2023 Person of the Year. Now, let’s toast to the Best Team-Up of the year: Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Noa Raskin for their stellar portrayal of Rocket’s origin story. With their amazing voice performances and Sean’s wonderful motion-capture work, they truly rocked the world for animals, touching hearts and captivating audiences everywhere while spotlighting the cruelty of animal experimentation. Cheers to an unforgettable cinematic journey!

          Best Portrayal of a Predator

PETA Oscats award for Best Portrayal of a Predator 2024

Julianne Moore’s performance as Gracie in May December is nothing short of chilling, earning her an Oscat for Best Portrayal of a Predator. Her depiction of a manipulative predator preying on a young boy is as disturbing as it is unforgettable. But it’s her callousness toward animals that makes her character even more unsettling. From working in a pet store where animals are typically treated as mere fashion accessories to serving hot dogs and hunting animals, Moore’s performance captures the essence of Gracie, leaving a lasting impact that adds depth to the film’s narrative.

          Flying V Is for Vegan

PETA Oscats award for Flying V Is for Vegan 2024

In a pivot from his work as the multi-Emmy–winning mastermind of The White Lotus, PETA friend Mike White penned a story with powerful vegan lessons, which is no surprise to us. From ducks gasping in horror at grotesque displays of their dead brethren to a wise-cracking pigeon calling chefs “a predator [who] feeds you to a group of much lazier predators,” Migration highlights just how misguided it is to use animals for food. Ducks are smart, resourceful birds, and each one is an individual with wants and fears. There isn’t a moment in the film where White lets us forget this. Every time you see birds flying in a V formation, remember, that’s your sign to go vegan!
