  • Palestine Action have for the third time hit a company complicit with Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. It’s complicit because it – Eagle Strategic Consulting – is owned by a director of one of the apartheid state’s biggest weapons manufacturers.

Eagle Strategic Consulting: third time’s a charm

In the early hours of 10 February 2025, Palestine Action struck again at ‘Eagle Strategic Consulting Ltd.’, the weapons consultancy firm owned by Richard Applegate. Activists from Palestine Action smashed the door of Eagle Strategic Consulting’s London registered office and sprayed red paint into the building:

    Eagle Consulting Palestine Action

    Eagle Strategic Consulting

Applegate, Elbit’s former Chairman, is the current Head of Strategy and New Business for Elbit Systems UK and serves as Director for Elbit’s drone-producing subsidiaries in Britain. This is the third direct action taken against this company, and Palestine Action will continue to escalate its campaign until the arms dealers behind the Israeli occupation are held to account.

    Complicit with Elbit

Elbit Systems is a leading Israeli arms manufacturer that produces drones, surveillance systems, and a range of other weapons that are directly used by the Israeli military in its illegal occupation of Palestine. Elbit’s weapons are used to target Palestinian civilians, destroy homes, and maintain the apartheid system that has oppressed Palestinians for decades. From Britain, ‘Elbit Systems UK’ products exported to Israel, including military drones and weapons sights, are complicit in the mass murder and violent suppression of Palestinians.

This latest action is not an isolated incident. In March 2024, Palestine Action took direct action against Eagle Strategic Consulting’s Dorset premises, smashing windows and spray-painting the building to send a clear message: we will not stand by while companies like this continue to profit from the deaths and suffering of Palestinians. Activists turned to their new London premises one month ago, targeting the site for the same purposes.

The firm plays a clear role in embedding Israel’s arms trade in Britain. As a lobbyist for Elbit, Eagle Strategic Consulting facilitates defense contracts and securing government deals that fund Israel’s ongoing war crimes. Richard Applegate, previously boasted about securing for Elbit a £500 million defense contract from the UK Ministry of Defence, claiming that while his “fingerprints weren’t over any of it,” he nonetheless openly admitted to “infecting” the system at “every level,” to secure the contract.

Palestine Action: expect a fourth visit?

A Palestine Action spokesperson said of the action against Eagle Strategic Consulting:

Israel’s brutal occupation is reliant on the arms industries facilitating it – which, in turn, relies on corporate firms like Eagle Strategic to embed them within the halls of government. Palestine Action will not allow these companies to operate without consequence. We will continue to disrupt the operations of all companies who are associated with Israel’s biggest weapons producer, Elbit Systems.

This action is just one example of the ongoing campaign to shut down Elbit and its enablers in the UK. Eagle Strategic Consulting is just one of many, and we will not stop until there isn’t a single company left who will work with Elbit Systems.

  • A former Foreign Office adviser has revealed politicians’ naked “complicity with war crimes” and “a systemic effort to suppress inconvenient truths” about UK allies. In the end, he resigned over ongoing arms sales to Israel during its genocide in Gaza. But now, he has called on former colleagues to refuse to ‘rubber-stamp the whitewashing’.

‘Shielding allies and allowing the most egregious crimes’

Mark Smith is a former policy adviser for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). And as he wrote in the Guardian:

As a lead officer on arms sales policy, I was responsible for assessing whether the UK government’s arms sales adhered to legal and ethical standards under domestic and international law.

He resigned in August 2024 after “over a year of internal lobbying and whistleblowing” regarding the “UK government’s refusal to halt arms sales to Israel amid the bombardment of Gaza”. And he claimed:

My time at the FCDO exposed how ministers can manipulate legal frameworks to shield “friendly” nations from accountability. They stall, distort and obscure official processes to create a facade of legitimacy, while allowing the most egregious crimes against humanity to take place.

He believes that the conduct he witnessed:

crossed the threshold into complicity with war crimes.

    He added that:

systemic dysfunction enables the government to perpetuate harm while shielding itself from scrutiny.

Systematically downplaying and suppressing “inconvenient truths”

His role at the Foreign Office was to give “neutral, evidence-based advice” regarding the cessation of arms sales wherever “there is a “clear risk” that weapons could be used to commit serious violations of international law”. But he saw ministers put pressure on officials “to skew the legal assessment”, giving “instructions to “rebalance” the findings – to downplay evidence of civilian harm and emphasise diplomatic efforts, regardless of the facts”. Some of these instructions were verbal as to “avoid creating a written record that could be subject to freedom of information requests or legal scrutiny”.

In short, he stressed, there was “a systemic effort to suppress inconvenient truths” about the war crimes of UK allies. This was not only regarding Israel, but also Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen, where the government was also “fully aware” of the “massive civilian casualties” and that “the UK had exceeded the threshold for halting arms sales”. In this case, he said:

Rather than confronting the illegality, officials resorted to delaying tactics – extending reporting deadlines and demanding additional information that was unnecessary. This “wait for more evidence” approach created a loophole, allowing arms sales to continue while the government feigned compliance.

But with the genocide in Gaza, Smith’s concerns increased.

“Nothing short of a scandal” at the Foreign Office

During the genocide, Smith was “serving as a diplomat in Dublin, where Ireland’s staunch support for Palestine put me in an uncomfortable position”. He couldn’t “in good conscience” justify Britain’s policies, but:

When I raised questions with the FCDO about the legal basis for our arms sales to Israel, I was met with hostility and stonewalling.

Officials and lawyers even told him not to leave a paper trail. For him:

The Foreign Office’s handling of these issues is nothing short of a scandal. Officials are bullied into silence. Processes are manipulated to produce politically convenient outcomes. Whistleblowers are stonewalled, isolated and ignored. And all the while, the UK government continues to arm regimes that commit atrocities, hiding behind legal loopholes and public relations spin.

He explained his attempts to follow “internal procedure” when raising his concerns. But he simply faced:

delays, obfuscation and outright refusal to engage.

Now, with US president Donald Trump publicly advocating for ethnic cleansing in Gaza, Smith had a message for others working in government:

I call on my former colleagues – those who still believe in the values of integrity and justice – to refuse to be complicit. Do not rubber-stamp reports that whitewash crimes against humanity. This is not self-defence – it is collective punishment. It is genocide.

  • COMMENTARY: By Sawsan Madina

I watched US President Donald Trump’s joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week in utter disbelief. Not that the idea, or indeed the practice, of ethnic cleansing of Palestine is new.

But at that press conference the mask has fallen. Recently, fascism has been on the march everywhere, but that press conference seemed to herald an age of naked fascism.

So the Palestinians have just been “unlucky” for decades.

“Their lives have been made hell.” Thank God for grammar’s indirect speech. Their lives have been made hell. We do not know who made their lives hell. Nothing to see here.

Trump says of Gaza: “We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and get rid of the destroyed buildings — level it out and create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area . . . ”

I wonder who are those lucky “people of the area” he has in mind, once those “unlucky” Palestinians have been “transferred” out of their homeland.

Trump speaks of transforming Gaza into a magnificent “Riviera of the Middle East”. Obviously, the starved amputees of Gaza do not fit his image of the classy people he wants to see in the Riviera he wants to build, on stolen Palestinian land.

    No ethnic cleansing questions
After the press conference, I did not hear a single question about ethnic cleansing, genocide, occupation or international law.

Under the new fascist leaders, just like under the old ones, those words have become old-fashioned and are to be expunged from the lexicon.

The difference has never been more striking between the meek who officially hold the title “journalist” and the brave who actually work to hold the powerful to account.

Now, more than ever, independent journalists are a threatened species. We should treasure them, support them and protest every attempt to silence them.

Gaza is now the prototype. We can forget international laws and international organisations. We have the bombs. You do as we wish or you will be obliterated.

Who now dares say that the forced transfer of a population by an occupying power is a war crime under the Geneva Convention? But then again, Trump and Netanyahu are not really talking about “forced transfer”. They are talking about “voluntary transfer”.

Once the remaining Israeli hostages have been freed, and water and food have been cut off again, those unlucky Palestinians will climb voluntarily onto the buses waiting to transport them to happiness and prosperity in Egypt and Jordan.

Or to whatever other client state Trump manages to threaten or bribe.

Can the International Criminal Court (ICC) command a shred of respect when Netanyahu is sharing the podium with Trump? Or indeed when Trump is at the podium?

    Dismantling the international order
Recently, fascist leaders have been dismantling the international order by accusing its organisations and officials of being “antisemitic” or “working with terrorists”. Tomorrow they will defund and delegitimise these organisations without the need for an excuse.

I listen to Trump speak of combatting antisemitism and deporting Hamas sympathisers and I hear, “We will combat anti-Israel views and we will deport those who protest Israel’s crimes.

“And we will continue to conflate antisemitism and anti-Israel’s views in order to silence pro-Palestinian voices.”

I watch Trump and Netanyahu, the former reading the thoughts of a real estate developer turned into a president’s speech and the latter grinning like a Cheshire cat — and I am gripped by fear. Not just for the Palestinians, but for all humanity.

If we think fascism is only coming for people on a distant shore, we ought to think again.

I watch Netanyahu repeating lies that investigative journalists have spent months debunking. Why would he care? The truth about his lies will not make it to mainstream media and the consciousness of the majority of people.

    Lies taking hold, enduring
And the more he repeats those lies, the more they take hold and endure.

I wonder how our political leaders will spin our allies’ new, illegal and immoral plans. For years, they have clung to the mantra of the two-state solution while Israel continued to make every effort to render this solution unfeasible.

What will they say now? With what weasel words will they stay on the same page as our friends in the US and Israel?

Netanyhu praises Trump for thinking outside the box. Here is an idea that Israel has spent billions on arms and propaganda to persuade people that it is dangerously outside the box.

Instead of asking Egypt and Jordan to take the Palestinians, why not make Israel end the occupation and give Palestinians equal rights in their own homeland?

  • A so-called “ceasefire” has done nothing to halt the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. Israel’s government is escalating policies that jeopardize the very lives of Palestinian children, and powerful nations are complicit through their silence or direct endorsement. Even now, terror and bloodshed continue in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, while the U.S. administration signals tacit support for what amounts to ethnic cleansing in Gaza.

Under the Biden administration, sanctions were imposed on extremist Israeli settlers—17 individuals and 16 entities over 11 months—to curb violence against Palestinians.

“It’s a show,” said one source. “Netanyahu is signaling quite clearly that he doesn’t want to move to the next phase. He’s sending a team without a mandate and without the ability to do anything,” the source added.

In a sign the Israeli Prime Minister is not serious about reaching the next phase of the deal, he sent a delegation to Qatar that is only allowed to discuss “technical details” rather than begin the second stage of the talks, a senior official said.

  • Donald Trump’s outrageous plan to remove the Palestinian people from Gaza, assume U.S. ownership of the Gaza Strip and make it into the “Riviera of the Middle East” reveals his intent to commit a war crime and a crime against humanity.

What Trump proposed during a February 4 news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House is “unlawful, immoral and irresponsible,” Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, said at a February 5 press conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. “This is worse than ethnic cleansing. It’s forced displacement … which is an international crime.”

  • Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC), placing financial and visa sanctions on individuals and their immediate family who assist ICC investigations against Israelis and Americans.

The Executive Order comes after last week’s efforts to pass a bill entitled the ‘Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act’ in Congress. The bill hit a stumbling block when it received 54 votes in favour and 45 against, falling short of the 60 votes required for it to go ahead to a final vote.

Instead, Trump has issued an Executive Order to implement the sanctions.

This added to his previous harassment at the hands of British authorities. And while “Austrian mainstream press picked up the story”, he said, UK mainstream media outlets are “still asleep at the wheel 5 months later”. He tweeted:

At least the Austrian mainstream press had the decency to cover what happened to me.

It’s been 5 months I was arrested at Heathrow— even the UN complained to Keir Starmer— and not a word in the UK press.

Why are they so afraid of covering this crackdown? Ashamed much?

Medhurst: MSM silent on the “hostile environment for journalists and activists”

In Austria, authorities are reportedly accusing Medhurst of:

being a Hamas member, specifically the military wing Izzal Din Qassam Brigades, since at least July 2024 and working to “destroy Israel and establish a worldwide Islamic caliphate*.

As he stressed, he “can’t even begin to deconstruct how wild this is”, as a “Christian Englishman“. He added “it’s like reading something out of The Twilight Zone”. He now believes, “with utmost certainty”, that:

Israel “has moved the war from Gaza to the West Bank,” says the Palestinian National Initiative’s Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, who joins us from Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military’s ongoing assault there has displaced over 35,000 Palestinians through evictions, destruction of infrastructure and indiscriminate attacks resulting in over 80 deaths. Barghouti also condemns Donald Trump’s declaration that the U.S. should take over the Gaza Strip. He calls both the “theft of Gaza” and the military campaign in the West Bank war crimes.

  • A shocking new film which claims attempts have been made to hide Israel’s genocide in Palestine gets its first screening in Bristol on Friday 21 February. Norman Thomas, producer of the film Censoring Palestine, said:

This film exposes the most outrageous attack on freedom of speech in this country in living memory.

    Censoring Palestine: the Filton 18

The film features powerful interviews with two mothers of the Palestine Action Filton 18 — women whose daughters were imprisoned for taking part in the protest action in the UK-based Israeli arms company, Elbit systems in Filton, Bristol.

As the Canary previously reported, in August 2024 Palestine Action activists disrupted Israeli weapons production at the Filton, Bristol research hub of Elbit Systems – Israel’s largest arms firm.

This brand new £35m research and development hub of Israel’s biggest weapons firm opened in June 2023, and was attended by the UK-Israeli Ambassador Hotevely, and Elbit’s CEO Bezhalel Machlis – who has frequently boasted of the company’s central role in Israel’s military, during the ongoing Gaza genocide.

An initial seven people were detained under police abuse of ‘Counter Terror’ powers. More police raids and arrests followed in the months since, most recently in November. A total of 18 people have now been arrested, detained, and held under ‘Counter Terror’ powers – despite being charged with criminal charges – before a trial in November 2025.

Many had their homes and property damaged and some of their families and loved ones were also subjected to police violence, while conditions for those inside prison include arbitrary and repressive restrictions.

Though initially charged under terrorism statutes, the activists were later prosecuted for standard criminal offenses like criminal damage and aggravated burglary.

    A ‘gross misjustice’

    Thomas said:

These women’s daughters have been victims of a gross misjustice. They have been branded as terrorists when in reality they were protesting against terror. This is terror that has been inflicted on the people of Palestine.

The use of terror laws against protesters, Thomas claims, is all part of a concerted effort to silence criticism of the government’s role in the conflict.

    He said:

It’s clear that our government has been much more deeply involved in the horrific events in Gaza than they have come close to admitting — and they are doing all in their power to cover this up.

Thomas argues that January’s Met Police crackdown on the national march for Palestine in London was the latest example of the way the government is trying to derail the protest movement. He said “it was appalling. As our film shows, the police were determined to make arrests. People were arrested for simply standing in the wrong place”.

But it’s not just about public protests, Thomas said.

    Censoring Palestine: squashing dissent, everywhere

The film shows examples of censorship in the worlds of education, entertainment and throughout mainstream media. There is even, the film claims, evidence of systematic censorship in social media.

    Thomas said:

Dissent is being criminalised. The mainstream media is not showing us the truth about what’s happening in Gaza and we’re not even allowed to protest against their lies and distortions.”

The film, the latest production from Platform Films makers of Oh Jeremy Corbyn – The Big Lie, includes contributions from veteran filmmaker Ken Loach, comedian Alexei Sayle, Stop The War convenor Lindsey German, world famous musician Roger Waters, and many more.

Censoring Palestine will be screened on Friday 21 February at 7.30pm in the Easton Community Centre, Kilburn St, Bristol BS5 6AW. The screening will be followed by a discussion including two mothers of the imprisoned Filton 18. Tickets are free — you can book here.

  • Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) has released updated research revealing that local government pensions scheme (LGPS) funds, administered by local councils across Britain, invest over £12 billion in companies enabling Israel’s genocide, military occupation, and apartheid against Palestinians.

    LGPS: funnelling money to Israel

The research, obtained through Freedom of Information requests, details the investments of 81 LGPS funds in companies which: produce weapons and military technology used in Israel’s attacks on Palestinians; provide services or infrastructure that supports Israel’s unlawful military occupation; or conduct activity in Israel’s illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian land.

Collectively, LGPS funds invest over £450 million in BAE Systems, which manufactures components for Israel’s F-15, F-16, and F-35 fighter jets used to bomb Gaza. Over £80million is invested in Caterpillar, which manufactures bulldozers used by Israel to demolish Palestinian homes, schools and hospitals. While over £90 million is invested in RTX Corporation, formerly Raytheon, which produces 4000-pound GBU-28 bombs used by the Israeli military.

For the first time, PSC’s research identifies investments in Amazon and Alphabet Inc (Google). This totals £4.7 billion, nearly 40% of the value of all investments listed. Both companies work together to provide cloud computing infrastructure to the Israeli military and government, dubbed Project Nimbus. In addition, the research shows LGPS funds hold over £28 million in Israel government bonds, therefore lending Israel money to carry out its atrocities.

    Divestment must happen

The new research comes as campaigns calling for the divestment of LGPS funds from companies enabling Israel’s human rights abuses continue to gather momentum. Earlier this month, Tower Hamlets Council passed a motion committing to divest its pension fund from arms companies, following a strong local campaign. While Bristol City Council has called for Avon Pension Fund to divest from arms companies, and companies active in Israel’s illegal settlements.

Lewis Backon, campaigns officer at Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said:

The scale of LGPS fund investments in companies that are complicit in Israel’s grave abuses of Palestinian rights is shocking. The deferred wages of millions of local government workers are going into companies enabling Israel’s war crimes, without their consent. But workers and residents are making it increasingly clear that they won’t accept their pension funds being used to fund companies complicit in genocide and apartheid.

We’re only one month into 2025 but already Tower Hamlets Council has committed to divest from arms companies, while Bristol City Council has voted to call on Avon Pension Fund to divest from companies enabling Israel’s crimes. This year will see the LGPS Divest campaign grow as a force for justice for Palestine – divestment from Israel’s crimes is a moral and legal imperative that cannot be ignored.

  • Let’s cut to the chase here. If you plan to resettle an entire ethnic group from an area that is their home, you are guilty of ethnic cleansing. There’s no argument. Donald Trump and his criminal plan to turn the Gaza Strip into the ‘MAGA Strip’ is textbook ethnic cleansing.

Indeed, the Britannica listing clearly states:

The attempt to create ethnically homogeneous geographic areas through the deportation or forcible displacement of persons belonging to particular ethnic groups. Ethnic cleansing sometimes involves the removal of all physical vestiges of the targeted group through the destruction of monuments, cemeteries, and houses of worship.

Sure, you’ll find my column in the section that says “opinion” on the Canary website, but this isn’t a matter of opinion.

If you (quite rightly) thought genocide Joe was an enemy of the Palestinian people, what do you think about neofascist Donald Trump displacing an entire population from their homes?

Angry? Horrified? Genuinely disgusted by Trump’s outlandish remarks?

Maybe, and understandably so, if you believe every single word a renowned liar with a tendency to treat American policy statements as opening gambits in a real estate negotiation.

    But I don’t.

Donald Trump: in reality TV mode

What I saw, beyond the sight of a beaming Benjamin Netanyahu close to getting his first erection for several decades, was the President of the United States in full Reality TV star mode.

You’d think Netanyahu would be happy with rinsing the American people for their tax dollars, while the richest country in the world refuses to afford homes and healthcare for tens of millions of its poorest and most vulnerable people.

Shouldn’t the American people now be asking why their businesses cannot get a state contract if they haven’t promised to obey Israel — in THIRTY SEVEN states?

Just imagine the firm that you work for being forced to pledge allegiance to any foreign country, let alone a genocidal pariah state, if they want to be able to afford to pay your wages.

This is subservient insanity of epic proportions.

    I digress.

It wasn’t that long ago that Trump was said to fancy getting his micro-hands on a Nobel Peace Prize.

Can you really imagine the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Nobel Assembly, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee simultaneously suffering from a momentary lapse of reason and awarding their coveted prize to a trainee ethnic cleanser that once had the brass neck to compare himself to a modern-day Nelson Mandela?

Not a fucking chance. They’ll be handing out awards to me for contributions to quantum physics before that tangerine twat gets the slightest sniff of a Nobel Peace Prize.

Furthermore, Trump’s superficial plans for the Gaza Strip require absolute cooperation from neighbouring states such as Egypt and Jordan — both of whom are refusing to entertain the possibility of assisting Trump’s vision of the mass ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

And why should they? The Palestinians will remain in Gaza until they die.

    Unintended consequences?

I just don’t think Trump, or at least the real decision makers (such as his pro-settler advisers) would be willing to give Russia the licence to expand their operations in Ukraine, because that would be the obvious and immediate consequence of Trump’s America giving notice of their intention to commit a grave and wicked crime against humanity.

Perhaps I’m underestimating the ultranationalist maniac, Trump?

Perhaps he really is foolish enough to think the impunity gifted to Netanyahu by the West as he orchestrated the murder of more than 62,000 humans should also apply to him while he callously attempts to forcibly displace a population of more than two million people.

“Why would they want to live there?”, asks Trump.

I’ll tell you why, you fucking awful, tyrannical stain. It is their home.

Regardless of how many buildings the Israeli terrorists have destroyed, how many innocent lives they have cruelly ended, or how many hospitals, mosques, universities and shops they have completely and utterly levelled, Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people.

We now find ourselves wondering if Starmer’s fraudulent and deeply unpopular government — currently taking a bit of a battering on the domestic front by the repulsive, toad-faced shithouse, Farage  — will either completely bend over and drop it’s pants for Trump and Israel or completely bend over and drop it’s pants for Trump and Israel while quietly mumbling a few words about respecting international law.

What started out as Israel’s right to defend itself following 7 October 2023, has somehow ended up being America’s right to forcibly displace more than two million people, just sixteen months later?

This Zionist ideology is somewhat troublesome, don’t you think?

Where is Starmer in all this?

If Keir Starmer truly believes in international law being applied equally and fairly — and I am yet to see anything that suggests that he does — he should be raising serious objections, both publicly and privately at the very highest levels.

A real leader would get on the phone to that ridiculous orange affront to human decency and tell him we’re not fucking interested in his chlorinated chicken, and we’ll muddle on by without them.

But I can’t see Starmer’s donors, such as the pro-Israel lobbyists, allowing the already-complicit Prime Minister to go too far with his condemnation of Trump’s impossible plan.

Even though I don’t think Trump will be able to orchestrate anything like he is suggesting, there is no doubt his provocative comments are likely to have a dangerous impact that stretches way beyond the streets of Rafah.

And Trump knows that. That’s why he said it.

  • During their joint press conference this week, U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that all Palestinians will be forcibly displaced from the Gaza Strip, the U.S. would take “ownership” of the Strip, and eventually rebuild it as the “Riviera of the Middle East” to be inhabited apparently by everyone from around the world (but clearly, they meant Israeli Jews), but not by the Palestinians who will be forcibly expelled from Gaza. For Trump, those Palestinians must be moved to Egypt, Jordan, and elsewhere once and for all.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agrees. In a press conference at the White House, Netanyahu told Trump, “You are the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House”.

Since returning for his second term as US president, Trump has been as pro-Israel — and as anti-Palestinian — as he could possibly be.

Trump signed an executive order calling to deport international students who protest Israel’s crimes against the Palestinian people.

Bowdoin Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) occupied the first floor of Smith Union on Thursday night and erected tents there, The Bowdoin Orient reported. They named the encampment after Sha’ban al-Dalou, a 19-year-old computer engineering student at al-Azhar University in Gaza who burned alive in a refugee tent encampment bombed by Israel last October.

  • On 3 February there appeared in the local paper of record, the Sydney Morning Herald (Independent. Always), a number of letters regarding Israel and Gaza. The first opines:

… the more often people hear lies and see troubling incidents like violence and vandalism associated with Jews, the more likely people are to blame Jews for causing those troubles, regardless of the truth.

A sub-editor attached an AP-credited photograph of a devastated Gaza with the caption ‘Destruction caused by the Israeli air and ground offensive in Gaza’.

Is this seeming carnage a fabricated Hamas photoshop of a functioning Gaza Strip, a propaganda vehicle to blame Jews for ‘troubling incidents like violence and vandalism’?

No, the carnage is real, as attested by the next letter:

… Israel says it bombed these buildings [homes, schools and hospitals] because Hamas was using them for military purposes. In my opinion, it’s Hamas’s human-shield tactics that were actually intolerable.

Hamas operatives were actually behind every person and every building and edifice (including the bulging cemeteries) so that every square inch of Gaza had to be obliterated! The task continues.

    The third letter confirms:

… these schools, hospitals and apartment buildings were used by Hamas to store weaponry and shield their combatants. The IDF claims it did all in its power to mitigate civilian harm but it appears Hamas was quite willing to sacrifice its people in pursuit of their goals.

These statements are preposterous rubbish. But whence do they come?

The Australian Jewish ‘faith’ school system contributes (‘The elephant in the Zionist classroom’, Pearls & Irritations) – where its indoctrination of a ‘love of Israel’ into vulnerable minds competes for supremacy with Jewish ethics, supposedly universal. University Departments of Jewish studies further the indoctrination.

From long indifference to the Palestine-Israel issue, my interest and concern was aroused precisely by a spate of crazy op-eds and letters which insulted my intelligence. The propaganda served not to persuade but to repel me. The occasion was the mortal illness and death of Yasser Arafat in November 2004. I wrote an account of the local mainstream media hysteria at the time (‘Arafat in Australian Media’, ZNet).

The crazy letters are standard fare in the mainstream media – the authors evidently have no trouble getting them printed in tightly controlled letters pages. I have no such luck.

The themes? God promised Israel to the Jews. We were there first and have remained there since. The UN partitioned Palestine in 1947 – the Zionists accepted it but the Arabs rejected it when the Palestinians could have had their own state. The land is ours because we conquered it in war. Palestinians deny Israel’s right to exist. Israel has made myriad peace offers but the offers have been refused. Give them an inch and they want a mile. The Palestinians know only terrorism. Palestinian schoolbooks socialize children into hating Jews. The Palestinians prefer perpetual victimhood. Etc.

Some Orthodox Jews erect eruvs so that they can nip down to the shop during the Sabbath, conveniently in defiance of Jewish law. The letter writers erect a mental ghetto which keeps them inside and immune to the realities of the state of Israel, conveniently in defiance of facts and logic.

Peter Beinart, in his new book Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza (as recounted by Abba Solomon) claims that Jewish devotion to Israel is one of idolatry. The term is suggestive but doesn’t seem to capture the essence. There is a mass hypnotism at work, reflected in the youngsters seduced to go and train and fight in the IDF – a dangerous delusion.

Why haven’t all these letter-writing zealots made Aliyah? Some others have but the bulk prefer to remain rooted in their native soil. The great Russian Jewish exodus had many of them preferring to go to countries other than Israel, including Australia. The Australian Jewish population is now expanded by Jewish Israeli emigrés seeking a better life.

It is telling that Melburnian Nomi Kaltmann could write an article titled ‘Why I’ll take Melbourne over New York as a place to raise a Jewish family’ (July 2024). Israel doesn’t rate a mention.

Film culture critic Ed Rampell reviewed the now year-old documentary Israelism and interviewed its directors. Rampell notes:

Israelism is about unconditional – in some sense it elides or depoliticizes the actual politics of Israel-Palestine, and it turns Israel into a sort of Jewish Disneyland, a place where all of Jewish people’s wildest dreams can come true.

A sort of Jewish Disneyland is it. Israel as not the promised land but the great holiday camp in the sky? In spite of the stark reality.

Cults are organizations devoted to the harm of their members. The cult of Zionism is devoted to the harm of others – the ethnic cleansing of Palestine now turned to genocide. The built-in and ongoing barbarism doesn’t seem to have dislodged the letter-writing foot soldiers from their ghetto and from their unquestioned commitment to this cause become pathological.

This rank and file is given succor by the ‘official’ Australian Jewish organizations, all unrepentantly Zionist. Among which is the Zionist Federation of Australia, currently headed by one Jeremy Leibler. Leibler is part of Australian Zionist royalty, descended from brothers Isi (Uncle) and Mark (father). Mark Leibler, in particular, has long been indulged and influential amongst the political class and in the media.

Here we have Leibler Jr (‘Labor has failed the Jewish community …’, SMH, 4 February; paywall) defending tooth and nail a make-believe Israel. (Leibler has an impeccable academic record and is a top corporate lawyer – he can’t be that blind.)

The Australian Labor Party, having long been obeisant to the Zionist imperative, has recently cooled its ardor in the face of the Palestinian holocaust, if only marginally. Leibler demands absolute fealty and the comprehensive quashing of pro-Palestinian protest and support.

    Leibler rants:

Until Australia’s foreign policy returns to a rational, principled footing (sic) – where the government can unequivocally rebuke these ways in which Israel is being demonised (sic), and Jews who support its right to exist are slurred as racists or genocide supporters – the Jewish community (sic) will not feel that the government is taking the threat of antisemitism seriously. If a government is willing to sacrifice decades of bipartisan support for a fellow liberal democracy (sic) to satisfy certain electorates (sic) …

Ludicrous and grotesque. Meanwhile Australian anti-Zionist Jews, not to mention tens of thousands of dead and wounded Palestinians, have been whited out of the picture.

  • Republican Party president Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the arrest warrants it issued against his war criminal ally, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But it’s essential to remember that this is simply an extension of Democratic Party president Joe Biden’s own assault on international law. Because it’s high time that US voters, and the world, see through the Republican-Democrat duopoly’s electoral charade.

Biden set the ball rolling on destroying the international legal order

The US, as a member of the Genocide Convention, has an “obligation to prevent genocide (Article I) which, according to the ICJ, has an extraterritorial scope”. And over a year ago, in January 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that it was “plausible that Israel’s acts could amount to genocide”. So the US should have taken action. Because as UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese has explained:

In order not to violate the Genocide Convention, which contains an obligation to prevent genocide, member states need to comply with the obligation not to support a state that might be committing genocide… Even if genocide had not been committed yet, because there is a risk, there is an obligation to prevent.

Other experts have backed this idea up.

However, Biden presided over 15 months of genocide in Gaza, with little significant change after the ICJ’s ruling.

He and his regime violated the US’s obligations by denying and fuelling Israel’s genocide, while covering for the apartheid state’s leaders. He also rejected the ICC’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu, despite it coming after the 2024 election, when the potential political cost of supporting it was much lower.

This was completely consistent with his administration’s approach of pretending to care about Palestinian people while simultaneously sending billions of dollars in military aid to the war criminals massacring them. It tried to protect its image, but essentially gave Israel a green light to commit genocide.

State department veteran Josh Paul left the Biden administration in 2023. And he has stressed that:

The Biden legacy over Gaza will be American complicity in genocide and American tearing down of the rules-based international order — or at least the first and most significant steps toward that

Trump has now openly advocated the ethnic cleansing of Gaza and launched an all-out offensive on the international legal system. But his behaviour is simply consistent with the position of the USA’s plutocratic elite, albeit more shamelessly forthright.

    Trump is finishing the job

Responding to Trump’s ICC sanctions, Amnesty International’s secretary general Agnès Callamard warned the president was ‘endorsing’ Israel’s crimes and “embracing impunity”:

Today’s executive order is vindictive. It is aggressive. It is a brutal step that seeks to undermine and destroy what the international community has painstakingly constructed over decades, if not centuries: global rules that are applicable to everyone and aim to deliver justice for all. The sanctions constitute another betrayal of our common humanity.

For Francesca Albanese, Trump and Biden’s efforts show that the US has led the West into “embracing… a lawless world”. And this, she stressed, “is a situation in which everyone loses”.

  • The following is a statement from Zarah Sultana MP

In a press conference accompanied by Benjamin Netanyahu – who has a live International Criminal Court arrest warrantDonald Trump said that “the US will take over the Gaza Strip” and “own it”.

Trump’s proposal echoes decades of Israeli policies aimed at the erasure of Palestinian identity, land and rights. It is a chilling reminder of the October 2023 plan drafted by Israel’s Ministry of Intelligence to forcibly expel Gaza’s residents to Egypt.

Now, Trump has openly supported this ethnic cleansing – even suggesting the deployment of US troops to occupy Gaza.

Zarah Sultana: Trump has issued a declaration of war against the Palestinian people

This is not just a threat.

It is a declaration of war on the Palestinian people and their right to exist.

For over a year Israel — backed by the US, the UK, and other Western nations — has waged a genocidal assault on Gaza.

70% of Gaza’s population are already refugees, displaced from their homes by previous waves of ethnic cleansing.

And after 16 months of relentless violence, 92% of housing in Gaza is damaged or destroyed. Families are starving, without access to food, water, fuel or medicine.

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces are escalating attacks, invading refugee camps, destroying homes and displacing thousands.

But the Palestinian people will not be erased.

For 76 years, they have resisted occupation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing. Their cause is just, their rights undeniable, and their determination unbreakable.

    We must stand with them.

The Hague Group, established last week to hold the Israeli government accountable for its violations of international law, reminds us of the importance of global solidarity and accountability.

Here in the UK, we have a responsibility to act.

Zara Sultana: the UK government must act

We must demand that our government condemns Trump’s proposals, upholds international law and ends all complicity in Israel’s crimes — including through a full arms embargo.

Sign my petition to demand that the UK ends all arms sales to Israel here.

This is a moment of stark choice: either we stand with the racist, authoritarian vision of Trump and Netanyahu — or we stand for justice, human rights and the rule of law.

Let us rise to this moment. Let us stand with Palestine. Let us fight for a future where justice, dignity and freedom prevail and Palestine is finally free.

Donald Trump’s plan to sanction the ICC must be pushed back on by the UK

The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) wrote to the Foreign Office on 5 February, highlighting the risk that an Executive Order may be used to implement this policy.

As a state party to the Rome Statute, the UK must stand behind the ICC, reiterating its support for the Court’s independence in the same manner it did in July 2020 after the Trump administration sanctioned some ICC staff. The UK’s commitment to supporting the court cannot be allowed to wane, following this even more extensive measure.

The ICC’s work in the situation in Palestine is time-sensitive and so far, one of the only effective accountability tools that might ensure those responsible for international crimes are held to account. Any sanctions targeting the Court or persons involved with the Court would not only obstruct justice as it did in 2020 but would also endanger the interests of victims and witnesses.

These actions, alongside other policies implemented by Trump’s administration since his inauguration, expose not only a blatant disregard to international law and accountability, but a dangerous trend that their clear intent to obstruct accountability and justice for Palestinians. In this critical moment, the UK, must offer more than rhetorical support; it requires concrete action.

The US has not signed the Rome Statute, which means that it is not a State Party to the ICC. However, Americans and Israelis who commit crimes in areas where it does have jurisdiction can still be charged. Palestine has been a State member since 2014, accepting ICC jurisdiction in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt).

    ‘Deeply troubling’

    ICJP Director Tayab Ali said:

It is deeply troubling that the United States, already a non-party to the ICC, has chosen to go further by directly attacking its legitimacy. This brazen interference is a grave assault on the international legal order and sets a dangerous precedent for undermining judicial independence. The U.S. has long positioned itself as a champion of human rights and accountability, yet its actions here reveal a clear agenda to obstruct justice, particularly when it risks exposing its own complicity in atrocities, including the unfolding genocide in Gaza.

There can be no equivocation or hesitation in response to this. The UK Government must demonstrate principled leadership by standing firm against Trump’s coercive tactics, unequivocally supporting the ICC, and condemning this reckless assault on international justice. If Downing Street is truly committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that war criminals are held to account, it must act decisively and without delay.
