  • A fat-free, low-sodium, low-calorie, cholesterol-free, meat-free vegan staple seems like something out of the distant future. However, this vegan delight is right under your nose—or more aptly, right under your toes: mushrooms!

Exact nutritional value varies based on your mushroom of choice, but in general, edible fungi are high in protein, fiber, and minerals and contain all the amino acids that you need in your daily diet. The best part? Mushrooms provide all these nutritional benefits without any cruelty to animals.

There are roughly 25 readily available types of mushrooms, so choosing the right one can be tough. We’ll break down the best uses of ’shrooms available at many grocery stores and offer some tasty vegan recipes to try.

The ‘Cute as a Button’ Mushroom Works in Lots of Dishes

White button mushrooms on a wood board

The button mushroom is the baby sibling to the cremini and the portobello. They’re all the same species, just at various stages of growth. Button mushrooms are recognizable by their white top and tiny size, usually just an inch in diameter. Buttons are also called the common mushroom, white mushroom, and champignon, so keep this in mind when looking at recipes and shopping.

The button mushroom has a neutral flavor, described as mild and earthy. When cooked, it soaks up oils and spices, making it a perfect flavor- and texture-enhancer. These ’shrooms work as a great simple side when seasoned and sautéed in vegan butter, but they can also be used in an Asian-inspired dish like bok choy stir-fry or in a Southwestern barbecue dish.

These tender, mild mushrooms also make a much better addition to a vegetable kebab than the flesh of a dead pig. Pigs are social and smart, forming complex social relationships and recognizing their mother’s distinct voice. They can live to be about 10 or 15 years old, but the more than 75 million raised on farms in the U.S. per year are killed when they’re only about 6 months old.

The Cremini Mushroom Is Affordable and Packed With Flavor

Stuffed mushrooms about to be baked

The cremini mushroom is known by several other names, too, the most common being chestnut mushroom and baby bella mushroom. Creminis and portobellos have a similar taste—a pleasant umami flavor—and a meaty texture.

Stuffed cremini mushrooms make great hors d’oeuvres, and the cremini pairs wonderfully well with caramelized leeks on toast for brunch. It can also make a cozy evening that much better when used in a vegan cream of mushroom soup.

The Portobello Mushroom Is Large and in Charge

    Portobello mushrooms on a grill

The portobello (spelled various ways) is almost always called just that. These mushrooms often grow to be about the size of a vegan hamburger, making them great for any summer cookout, as their meaty texture and umami flavor come out best when grilled. They can also be ground up and shaped into a patty.

Grilling up a vegan ’bello burger at the BBQ instead of one made from animal flesh is a tasty and compassionate choice. Cows used for beef are separated from their mothers shortly after birth. Farmers press hot irons to cows’ skin, burn off their horns, and castrate the males, usually without any painkillers. Cows are social beings, and after farmers take their babies, mother cows cry out for their calves for days. Help these sensitive animals by opting for a portobello mushroom burger instead of a hamburger.

The Versatile Oyster Mushroom Can Do It All

A bungle of oyster mushrooms, gills up

Not only do oyster mushrooms work wonderfully well in many types of cuisine, these toadstools have also been found to remove oil from contaminated soil—plus, they can be used to make vegan leather. There’s not mushroom for improvement there!

While some mushrooms do have a fishy flavor, the oyster mushroom is only named after the shellfish because of its similarity in appearance. Its large size and tenderness make it great for frying, and its mild flavor makes it an unobtrusive addition to tacos.

    Oh, Shiitake, That’s Good!

Shitake mushrooms and peppers are sautéed

Until 1982, traditional shiitake mushrooms were grown using the ancient Japanese method of slicing shii trees and integrating shiitake spores to latch onto the grooves. With modern innovation, people can now grow these mushrooms in something as simple as hardwood chips inside of a plastic bag.

Shiitake mushrooms are originally from East Asia, making them a staple in dishes like miso soup, Buddha’s delight, and modern fried rice and tofu scramble. The shiitake has a rich, buttery flavor and a tender, chewy texture when slow-cooked, so this umami flavor-packed  mushroom is great in Western stews and sauces as well.

The Lion’s Mane Mushroom Will Make You Seafood in a New Light

    Close-up of a lion's mane mushroom's texture

The lion’s mane mushroom grows in oblong clusters and goes by the alias of pom pom mushroom or bearded hedgehog mushroom, depending on location. While native to Europe, this strange looking fungus is used in Chinese medicinal teas and is said to boost brain power. The flavor of lion’s mane is apparently similar to that of lobster, making this mushroom a great choice in “seafood” recipes, like this crabless stuffed pepper dish.

Lobsters, crabs, and other sea animals aren’t so different from humans and other mammals—they communicate with one another, explore their surroundings, and can feel pain. Lobsters may even be more sensitive to pain than humans are, as their nervous system is unable to go into a state of shock. This means that they likely feel everything when being cut into or boiled alive. Thankfully, mushrooms like the lion’s mane and other meat-free options provide salty flavor reminiscent of the sea with no harm to ocean animals.

    Time to Get Cookin’

The versatility of mushrooms makes them a great addition to any type of cuisine, and their nutrients and animal-friendly benefits prove that they really are fungis once you and learn how to use them to their full potential!

When you go vegan, you save nearly 200 animals’ lives each year, including problem-solving pigs, social cows, and sensitive lobsters. Encourage others to stop putting animal-derived foods on their plates by giving them a copy of PETA’s vegan starter kit, and check out our 3-Week Vegan Challenge for more tips on eating and living compassionately.

According to Associated Press, Melvin Van Peebles, the groundbreaking filmmaker, playwright, and musician whose work ushered in the Blaxploitation wave of the 1970s and influenced filmmakers long after, has died. He was 89.

In a statement, his family said that Van Peebles, father of the actor-director Mario Van Peebles, died Tuesday evening at his home in Manhattan.

“Dad knew that Black images matter. If a picture is worth a thousand words, what was a movie worth?” Mario Van Peebles said in a statement Wednesday. “We want to be the success we see, thus we need to see ourselves being free. True liberation did not mean imitating the colonizer’s mentality. It meant appreciating the power, beauty, and interconnectivity of all people.”

Sometimes called the “godfather of modern Black cinema,” the multitalented Van Peebles wrote numerous books and plays, and recorded several albums, playing multiple instruments and delivering rap-style lyrics. He later became a successful options trader on the stock market.

But he was best known for “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song,” one of the most influential movies of its time.

The Met Gala, one of fashion’s biggest and starriest events has rolled out its red carpet in New York for some of the planet’s best-known celebrities.

The Met Gala is typically held on the first Monday in May, but this year, the event was postponed due to Covid-19 and falls right in the middle of fashion month.

Kicking off this evening, 13 September, fashion’s biggest night will be held at its usual location: the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The gala will be in celebration of the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which opens to the public in the Anna Wintour Costume Center on 18 September, and the looks were inspired by everything from the Matrix film franchise to the Statue of Liberty.

The ball was co-hosted by pop star Billie Eilish, tennis player Naomi Osaka, actor Timothée Chalamet, and poet Amanda Gorman.

One of the most talked-about looks of the night came from Kim Kardashian, who covered her face and body in an all-enveloping black outfit. The custom design was devised by Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of fashion house Balenciaga.

According to Associated Press, Britney Spears announced her engagement Sunday to her boyfriend Sam Asghari with an exuberant post displaying a diamond ring engraved with the word “lioness.”

The news comes days after her father filed to end the court conservatorship that has controlled the singer’s life and money for 13 years.

She wrote “I can’t (expletive) believe it!” with an Instagram video post where she winks, kisses a smiling Asghari on the cheek, and answers “yes!” when he asks if she likes the ring.

Asghari posted his own photo of Spears showing her ring finger to the camera. The four-carat diamond ring is engraved inside the band with “lioness” because it’s his nickname for her, the company Forever Diamonds NY said in a statement.

The couple met on the set of the “Slumber Party” music video in 2016. Spears was previously married to Kevin Federline, with whom she shares two sons, ages 14 and 15. She was briefly married to childhood friend Jason Alexander in 2004.

According to Associated Press, students age 12 and older in the Los Angeles public school system soon must be vaccinated to attend classes on campus under one of the toughest anti-COVID mandates enacted in the nation.

The board of the Los Angeles Unified School District voted Thursday to require students age 12 and up to be fully vaccinated, with those who take part in sports and other extracurricular activities receiving both of two shots by the end of October and all others by Dec, 19.

Students who can’t show proof of vaccination won’t be permitted to have in-person learning following the end of winter break on Jan. 11 unless they have a medical or other exemption.

“This action is not about violating anybody’s rights,” school board member Monica Garcia said. “This action is about doing our job to be able to offer public schools that children can come to school and be safe.”

The nation’s second-largest school district was the largest in the U.S. to issue such a mandate. Nearby Culver City Unified School District imposed a similar policy last month for the 7,000-student district.

Los Angeles Unified, which has 630,000 students, has moved more aggressively than most districts in enacting COVID-19 safety measures. It tests all students and employees every week, requires masking indoors and outdoors, and has ordered employees to be vaccinated.

The district was among the last of the nation’s largest school districts to reopen to classroom instruction last spring. The teachers union opposed the move for months, citing health concerns. The union applauded the new mandate, which is sought after teachers were ordered to get the shots.

“COVID-19 is mutating, being transmitted to our students, and vaccines remain our community’s best line of defense to prevent the continued spread of disease,” said Cecily Myart-Cruz, president of United Teachers Los Angeles.

  • There’s something really special about setting positive goals during the Jewish High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah—or the Jewish New Year—marks a personal milestone for me: It’s when I went vegan. Since Rosh Hashanah is a time to reflect and welcome change, I asked myself, “Why do we welcome some animals in our home but condemn others to a life of suffering and death before being served on our plates?” and “Don’t other animals want to live as much as I do?” In the days leading up to Yom Kippur—the Jewish Day of Atonement that is typically observed by fasting for 25 hours—I decided to help our fellow animals by not eating, wearing, or exploiting them in any way.

Two brown cows in a field of flowers

Since I became vegan many Rosh Hashanas ago, I keep our fellow animals in mind during the High Holy Days—and there are many ways everyone can. Here are three ways to help animals during the Jewish New Year:

    Prepare a vegan feast.

Dipping apples in honey is a classic Rosh Hashanah tradition that symbolizes the hope for a sweet new year—but we don’t have to use honey from exploited bees to participate. Swap out the honey for something just as sweet like maple syrup, agave nectar, brown rice syrup, or date syrup. If you really want to sweeten the deal, get creative: Vegan chocolate sauce and vegan caramel are perfect additions to your Rosh Hashanah spread.

It’s my personal belief that no Jewish spread is complete without challah, and it’s always better home-baked! Whether you like to kick it up a notch with raisins or vegan chocolate chips or keep it classic, try PETA’s foolproof recipe for vegan challah.

If you don’t look forward to eating matzo ball soup on Jewish holidays, I can’t relate. Veganize your savory soup this year with PETA’s recipe for perfectly fluffy matzo dumplings.

    Reflect on speciesism.

During the High Holy Days, we’re encouraged to take time for introspection. One way we can include our fellow animals in this practice is to consider their complex inner lives, emotions, and relationships. Cows are deeply devoted to their young and mourn the loss of their loved ones, chickens pass down knowledge from generation to generation, mother pigs “sing” to their babies while nursing, and all animals can suffer. Sensitive cows, chickens, pigs, and others don’t want to spend their lives deprived of important relationships and confined to cramped, filthy, windowless sheds.

    Take action.

Introspection is important, and it’s even better when we follow it with action. Participate in PETA’s action alerts to help animals who are suffering for experiments, food, fashion, and entertainment. Pledge to go vegan, and order PETA’s free vegan starter kit to help you get started. There are countless ways to make a difference—like taking PETA’s 3-Week Vegan Challenge.

According to Reuters, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie says she hopes to empower children around the world with tools to “fight back” for their rights with a book she has written with Amnesty International. The book is out in Britain on Thursday and for pre-order in other countries, with the aim of worldwide publication. Jolie’s book will be published in the U.S. in October.

In an Instagram post Hollywood actress while announces her book release talked about children’s rights and said that,

“Here’s a truth you may not know: As a young person, your rights have equal status to the rights of an adult. Not when you reach adulthood, or leave home, or get your first job, but now. Whoever you are, wherever you live – your life is of equal value to any adult or any other young person on the planet”

“Know Your Rights and Claim Them” written with human rights lawyer Geraldine Van Bueren, one of the original drafters of the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, aims to equip kids with the knowledge to safely challenge injustices.

Children have rights just as adults do and they should have the power and agency to claim them. Over the last couple of years I have been working with @amnesty and Geraldine Van Bueren QC on a book that aims to help young people do just this, Jolie added.

Jolie, the special envoy for UN refugee agency UNHCR, said she hoped the book would also remind governments of their commitment to the global treaty enshrining children’s civil, social, political, and economic rights.

The book addresses identity, justice, education, and protection from harm, among other issues. It provides guidance on becoming an activist, being safe, and a glossary of terms and organizations.

“Through the book, you have to find your own path forward, because we are very concerned about the safety of children. We don’t want children just running around screaming for their rights and putting themselves in danger,” Jolie said in an interview with Reuters.

According to Reuters, Paramount has launched an action against Federal Insurance Company after the two firms disputed how much money should be paid out for delays.

Production on the new “Mission: Impossible” movie was shut down seven times due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday that accuses the film’s insurance company of failing to pay out for all but one of the costly stoppages.

Filming on the action series starring Tom Cruise was delayed four times in Italy, and three times in the United Kingdom between February 2020 and June 2021, said the lawsuit filed by Paramount Pictures in U.S. Federal Court in California. The stoppages were caused by positive coronavirus tests among members of the cast or crew or quarantine or lockdowns imposed in countries where the thriller was being filmed.

The lawsuit accuses Indiana-based Federal Insurance Company of breach of contract, saying it has agreed only to pay out $5 million for the first stoppage. According to the lawsuit, the Federal Insurance Company has refused to pay out for the disruption. Documents lodged in the court accuse the insurers of breach of contract, and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.

Federal Insurance did not immediately return a request for comment.

Paramount said in the lawsuit that the insurance company argued there was “no evidence that those cast and crew members could not continue their duties, despite being infected with SARS-CoV-2 and posing an undeniable risk to other individuals involved with the production.”

Paramount did not say how much the shutdowns had cost but said its losses “far exceeded” the $5 million that Federal had agreed to pay for the first instance of coronavirus in February 2020. Paramount is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

According to updated national guidelines published on Tuesday, overweight and obese should start getting screened for diabetes earlier, at age 35 instead of 40.

The new advice stems from rising rates of both obesity and Type 2 diabetes, and research showing the health benefits of prevention methods and early treatment. Three out of four U.S. adults are overweight or obese, which increases their chances of developing diabetes. Among adults aged 18 and older, 14 percent already have diagnosed diabetes, and 33 percent have pre-diabetes.

The guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an advisory group to the U.S. government, was published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It updates the task force’s 2015 recommendations and says even earlier screening should be considered for overweight or obese American Indians, Black people, Hispanics, and the other groups with disproportionately high diabetes rates.

Screening means blood tests to measure sugar levels and sometimes involve drinking a sugary liquid first. The new guidance suggests that people whose tests are normal could be screened every three years. Type 2-diabetes impairs the body’s ability to use insulin to regulate blood sugar, leading to high levels that can cause heart problems, organ damage, and blindness. Pre-diabetes means higher than normal blood sugar levels that can lead to full-blown diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes incidence has increased in recent years along with obesity rates. A 2001-17 report in the same journal shows the rate nearly doubled in kids aged 10-19, jumping from 34 cases per 100,000 kids to 67 per 100,000.

The task force’s guidance says evidence shows diet and physical activity can prevent or delay diabetes in adults with pre-diabetes. A JAMA editorial says evidence shows that few U.S. adults with pre-diabetes are referred to diabetes prevention or weight loss programs that could help them avoid diabetes and its complications. It calls for a broader range of effective prevention programs that are covered by insurance and accessible to people who need them most.

There has been a surge in the creation of short films in Pakistan with many of them proving to be huge hits. Pakistani short film ‘Bhai’ has been selected to premiere at Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The movie has been written and directed by Hamza Bangash and executive produced by Mina Husain of Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL) and Salman Ahmed. It has been co-produced by Taha Sabri of Taskeen and Westbury Group and Carol Noronha.  The creators have cast a differently-abled actor, Ayan Javaid, to play the lead. This is huge for the representation of differently-abled people in Pakistani media.

Bhai is a story of two brothers who go out to celebrate Independence Day at a restaurant. The younger brother, who is autistic, has an episode while he is waiting for his older brother to return with their food. The older brother is watching the struggle, however, from inside the restaurant and he must make a choice: help his brother or ignore him.

Amid the bustle of Karachi on Pakistan’s Independence Day, the tumultuous events portrayed in Hamza Bangash’s bracing, tension-filled drama widen the gulf of understanding between two brothers, Bhai as described on the TIFF’s website.

The film is about the choices we make, shame, trauma, brotherhood, and finding a small sliver of happiness in a brutal world.

“In 2021, for the first time, I’m going to get to experience the festival as a filmmaker,” said director Hamza Bangash, sharing his previous experiences at the festival as a volunteer and an intern.

Hamza expressed his gratitude to the film’s team and wrote, “It’s a film about choti khushiyan [little joys], and about everyday bravery, the kind that Karachiites have in spades.”

The film will be screened at the festival in September 2021. Hoping this is just the start of more Pakistani movies and artists being internationally recognized and appreciated.

Normally Zoom is used to teach and meet in the global context of the epidemic, but many have described it as an exhausting experience. In response, Facebook has developed a virtual reality app that allows you to chat with friends in a more realistic way.

According to AP News, Facebook is trying to pull in workplace users with a new virtual-reality meetings app called Horizon Workrooms. However, it does require a 300 Dollars VR headset, the most popular of which is the widely used Oculus Quest 2. People without a headset can join with a video call. Up to 50 people can be on the call, but only 16 can be in the VR space with avatars. For the full VR experience, users need to have a Facebook account.

While entering the Horizon workroom, you see cartoon characters of different people sitting around a table in a room, which gives a sense of the real scene. With this app, you can also choose different outfits, avatars, and clothes. People wearing headsets will move their fingers and hands, so their digital avatar will also move their hands and fingers. In addition, the lips of their digital characters will also move whenever they speak. The virtual conference also has a whiteboard where you can share presentations and writings with others.

Facebook aims to enable people to use Oculus for fun as well as serious activities and to have a unique virtual dating experience.

“We’ve been using the app internally for over a year now, but 18 months of epidemics and lockdowns have shown that such platforms are the best for a meeting,” said Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Realty Labs

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a fan of the “metaverse,” a vague concept that encompasses augmented and virtual reality with new ways of connecting. He expects it to be the next stage of how people experience the internet.

Virtual reality has never really taken off, even during the pandemic, when remote work became the norm for millions of office workers and made the videoconferencing service Zoom a household name.

On the other hand, Facebook staff have said that they can present themselves in a more confident way in the Horizon workroom than in Zoom, and it is much easier to talk to each other thanks to virtual characters.

Whether it’s a handgun, a revolver, or a rifle, they have one thing in common: the ammunition that burns in a bullet pushes the bullet forward, which has its own limits. Now the world’s fastest shotgun has been developed at a speed of 200 feet per second. This is because the gun pushes the bullet forward with electromagnetic force.

Interestingly, the gun is considered to be the most powerful coil gun ever sold to the public, and also the most powerful handheld coil gun ever built. It was built by Arc Flash Labs. This model weighs 20 pounds with a battery installed inside and its charger can be purchased separately.

According to the Arc Flash Labs, the GR-1 Anvil is an eight-stage semi-automatic gun that can be called the world’s first handgun powered by electromagnetic force due to the coil. It is fitted with iron magnetic bullets that travel at a speed of 200 feet per second. It can fire 20 rounds with full force in one minute and 100 rounds at half power.

Despite all this, it is claimed that it is not a deadly weapon and law enforcers will be able to fire it like rubber bullets because they are not lethal due to their structure. Just as an air gun’s knife is harmless, so is its firearm less harmful, and similar guns are used to start sports competitions. But it can also be used to hunt small animals.
