  • After learning that students at Baylor University submitted complaints regarding mice and rats at an off-campus apartment complex, Park Place Waco, PETA is doing what the property management apparently won’t: offering humane solutions.

One student alleged that the management placed glue traps in his apartment. Glue traps are extremely cruel devices that slowly kill sensitive rats and mice.

In a bid to encourage building managers to offer effective, nonlethal methods of dealing with “unwanted houseguests,” PETA is planning to place an ad near Park Place Waco as a reminder that rats and mice deserve respect and compassion. We’re also offering cruelty-free tips to students so that they can humanely remove unwanted animals from their homes and relocate them to safe areas.

Billboard featuring a mouse with text that reads property managers be kind to tenants and animals, too! Use humane rodent control today

Why You Should NEVER Use Glue Traps

Animals caught in glue traps desperately struggle to escape, which causes them to become even more helplessly stuck. The glue often rips off their fur, feathers, or skin. Some animals even chew off their own limbs in an attempt to free themselves. It can take days for trapped animals to die from exhaustion, injury, shock, dehydration, asphyxiation, starvation, or blood loss—an undeniably cruel fate for anyone to endure. Those who survive may be crushed to death in the garbage, which is where manufacturers of glue traps direct consumers to “dispose” of them.

In addition to being cruel, lethal traps and poisons are not long-term solutions for removing mice or rats from your home. When rodents are killed, the survivors breed faster, which causes an increase in the population. And the devices fail to address the source of the problem: If holes aren’t plugged up and attractants aren’t removed, more animals will move in to take the place of those who have been killed.

You may not want rats and mice in your home, but they still deserve your empathy. Here are some humane methods for rodent control:

Humane Rodent Control Tips for All Residents, Homeowners, and Building Managers

    • Contain food in chew-proof containers, made of metal or glass, and keep garbage tightly lidded, even indoors. Keep surfaces, floors, and cabinets free of crumbs and spills. Consider moving some foods from the cupboard to the refrigerator.
    • Feed companion animals indoors, and then pick up their dishes when they have finished eating.
    • Trim back vegetation around buildings, and seal any holes larger than a quarter inch in diameter, cracks in the walls and floors, and spaces around doors, windows, and plumbing.
    • Monitor rodent activity by using a flashlight to identify entry points and frequented areas. Look specifically for droppings, chewed areas, nests, and stored/cached food. Placing ammonia-soaked rags in areas where indications of animals or droppings are seen will drive them out.
    • Rats and other small animals cannot tolerate the scent or taste of pepper. Make a mixture of salad oil, horseradish, garlic, and plenty of cayenne pepper. Let this mixture sit for four days, strain it into a spray bottle, and spray it in frequented areas. It won’t harm curious animals, but it will drive them away. Mothballs and peppermint oil–soaked cotton balls are also great rodent repellents.
    • Once animals are gone, use foam sealant, steel wool, hardware cloth, or metal flashing to seal entry points.
    • After rodent-proofing the building, live-trap and remove any rats or mice still inside. Use a commercially available, cruelty-free Havahart trap or make your own. You can find humane, reusable Smart Mousetraps in our online catalog at PETA.com.
    • Check the trap hourly, and release any captured rodents within 100 yards—so as not to disorient them—of where they were caught.

Show Compassion to Rats and Mice

Rats and mice are smart and family-oriented, and they can recognize their names when they’re called. They deserve to be treated with compassion and respect—not killed and discarded. Show empathy to them by never using glue traps or poisons and by always choosing humane methods of rodent control.

You can also help by telling companies like Lowe’s and The Home Depot to stop selling cruel glue traps:

  • With every meal we eat, we’re making a choice to either help or hurt our fellow animals. When you eat meat, eggs, or cheese, do you stop to think about who suffers the consequences? To urge everyone to really see the individuals who suffer for meat, eggs, dairy, and other cruelly obtained foods, PETA’s taking over the Midwest with our thought-provoking “Eat Consciously” campaign.

In five Midwestern cities, we’ve strategically placed “See Me, Not Meat” ads on billboards where they’ll most effectively encourage diners to choose compassion.

To encourage Canton, Ohio, residents to show empathy to cows, we placed a billboard of a cow near Kraus’ Pizza—one of Ohio’s staple pizza chains—as well as Wendy’s and Jersey Mike’s Subs locations. Cows are gentle giants who develop friendships and mourn the deaths of loved ones.

sad looking cow on a billboard that says "see me not meat"

We also placed a billboard of a chicken in Akron, Ohio, near the city’s DeVitis Fine Italian Foods. Chickens are among the most abused animals on the planet, and our billboard reminds passersby that they, like all our fellow animals, are sentient beings who suffer when humans kill them for their flesh.

ad with chicken that says "see me, not meat"

In Indianapolis, we placed two billboards featuring a cow—one near Arby’s and Domino’s locations and another near Sunshine Breakfast House & Grill and Famous Steak & Lemonade.

billboard on the side of a road featuring a cow that says "see me not meat"

Every year in the U.S., more than 29 million cows suffer and die in the meat and dairy industries, in which animals are branded and castrated and cows’ horns are burned out of their skulls—often without any pain relief. At slaughterhouses, workers shoot them in the head with captive-bolt guns, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throats—often while they’re still conscious.

Our billboards in Kansas City, Kansas—the “barbecue capital of the world”—challenged diners to recognize that pigs are intelligent and emotional beings, not entrées. We placed one billboard near the city’s American Royal World Series of Barbecue.

billboard appearing over a grassy hill featuring a pig that says "see me not meat"

And we placed another on the highway near two of Kansas City’s major food manufacturing plants, Conagra Foods and Tyson’s Hillshire Brands.

In Omaha, Nebraska, we placed a billboard of a cow near Red Lobster and Dairy Queen locations. We also put up a billboard near Abelardo’s Mexican Fresh and a Popeyes location.

    What You Can Do

Eat consciously! Always leave animals off your plate and your shopping list, and go vegan:

  • Shrimpin’ ain’t easy on these sensitive animals or the ocean. But vegan shrimp is delicious, environmentally sustainable, and animal-free.

While shrimp look different from humans, we’re alike in the ways that matter most. Studies have shown that crustaceans have central nervous systems that enable them to feel pain and emotional stress. Shrimp are social beings who use sound or polarized light to communicate. And with more than 2,500 species of shrimp out there, we’ve only scratched the surface of the behavioral characteristics of these fascinating animals. (But we do know that eating shrimp means you’re also consuming the unappetizing parasites that make up their diet.) Meanwhile, the methods used to catch shrimp are taking a toll on other aquatic beings, including dolphins. Nets don’t discriminate.

There’s no need to eat shrimp when you can catch these tasty vegan options online or in grocery stores across the country today. Here are just a few of our favorites.

  • A “Slotherhouse Rules!” Award from PETA is on its way to the creatives behind the new horror-comedy film Slotherhouse, recognizing writers Bradley Fowler and Cady Lanigan and director Matthew Goodhue for using puppetry instead of a real sloth and for sharing a powerful anti-poaching message with viewers.

    Slotherhouse rules award

The campy slasher film tells the story of Alpha, a sloth who rightfully exacts revenge after she’s snatched from her home and forced to live as a sorority mascot in order to draw attention on social media. Spoiler alert! The few who survive her maniacal killing spree learn their lesson: By the film’s end, the sorority sisters form an activist group called “FETCH” (For Ethical Treatment, Care, and Humanity) to discourage owning exotic animals.

Slotherhouse is more than funny—it’s an opportunity to side with the frustrated animals who are taken from their habitats and exploited for clout and entertainment. PETA is delighted to honor the film’s creatives for driving home their anti-poaching message by using impressive puppets instead of suffering captive wild animals. Bravo!”

—Lisa Lange, PETA Senior Vice President

Using wild animals such as bears, snakes, big cats, monkeys, sloths, wolves, and elephants for entertainment is inherently cruel, and there is never a situation in which it’s acceptable to use them in a movie or on a TV show. PETA’s undercover investigations as well as law-enforcement probes into animal suppliers for the film and TV industries have documented that animals are whipped and kept in deplorable conditions.

While many filmmakers and TV producers understand that animals aren’t ours to exploit for entertainment, some still need to be persuaded—and that’s where viewers come in. By avoiding movies and shows that use live wild animals, the public can send a powerful message to Hollywood that profits won’t come without principles and that we expect producers to keep animals out of their projects.

If you see animals being used for film or television productions, be sure to report it at PETA.org/Report or call the whistleblower hotline at 323-210-2233.

  • Let’s dive fork first into the “girl dinner” trend. The idea behind it is to whip up a quick and easy meal that’s more like a spread of appetizers than a traditional hearty dinner. Picture no-fuss finger foods bursting with flavor—perfect for a light yet satisfying meal.

But this trend deserves a compassionate makeover. Enter vegan “girl dinner”—the ultimate fusion of convenience, compassion, and tastiness. Some of these meals can have beautiful presentations, while others just involve putting together handfuls of things from the pantry. Vegetables in every color? “Girl dinner.” Beans on a taco shell? “Girl dinner.”

The ‘Why’ Behind Vegan ‘Girl Dinners’

Besides being delicious and easy, vegan “girl dinners” are a fantastic opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint. By some estimates, animal agriculture is responsible for more greenhouse gases than all the world’s transportation systems combined. Plus, raising animals for food requires massive amounts of land, food, energy, and water and causes animals immense suffering. By going vegan, you’ll be supporting sustainable farming practices and reducing the demand for animal-based ingredients.

We’ve compiled a list of ideas to inspire your own vegan “girl dinner.” But don’t let the name fool you—these meals are for anyone at any time.

    Chickpea ‘Tuna’ Salad on Crackers

Get ready for a taste sensation with this Vegan Chickpea Tuna recipe. Try making a batch on your meal prep day to enjoy throughout the week.

Choosing chickpeas over tuna shows respects for intelligent animals and helps fight the environmental havoc caused by fishing. Plus, you’re safeguarding your health from heavy metals and food poisoning.

    Vegan Mediterranean Mezze Board

Get ready to create a Mediterranean masterpiece! Arrange a colorful array of olives, cherry tomatoes, crunchy cucumber slices, creamy hummus, vegan feta, and whole wheat pita on your plate. It’s like a mini vacation for your taste buds.

When you buy vegan feta, you’re being kind to sheep. These sensitive animals exploited for their milk endure pain, stress, and confinement. Farmers separate mothers and lambs shortly after birth. Sheep are slaughtered when they stop making them money.

    Rainbow Vegetable Skewers

Isn’t eating food on a stick more fun? Load up skewers with a vibrant array of your favorite raw vegetables. Try red onions, bell pepper slices, cucumber rounds, and even precooked marinated tofu cubes. There are tons of dips to try with these skewers.

skewers with various vegetables in rainbow colors© Sweet Simple Vegan

When you choose to leave meat and cheese off your skewers, you’re helping animals. In the U.S., a staggering 99% of animals used for food endure life on cramped, dismal farms. Workers cram animals into cages, crates, and sheds, robbing them of the opportunity to engage in natural behavior and to satisfy their needs. Many animals never experience the warmth of the sun or fresh air until they’re packed on trucks destined for slaughterhouses.

    Hummus Trio

On meal prep night, whip up a trio of creamy hummus flavors: classic, roasted red pepper, and spinach artichoke, and enjoy them all week long. Or even easier, purchase ready-made hummus from the store. Then, pair the hummus with veggie sticks and pita triangles for a dippable delight.

    Avocado Rose Toast

Avocado toast is one of the easiest things to make. If you’re feeling extra, take your avocado game to the next level by arranging slices in the shape of a rose on a slice of whole-grain toast. Sprinkle them with nutritional yeast, black sesame seeds, and a pinch of red pepper flakes for some extra flair.

    Quinoa Spring Salad Cups

Fill red cabbage cups with zesty quinoa salad featuring diced veggies, fresh herbs, and tangy vinaigrette. These adorable cups are as delightful to look at as they are to devour. This is another recipe that’s easy to make in advance and eat all week.

Feeling fancy? Check out our guide to creating a vegan charcuterie board in order to make an appetizing spread for “girl dinner” that will be perfect for sharing with friends.

    Handfuls of Random Vegan Foods

Feeling less fancy? Here’s a list of foods to inspire you. By mixing and matching these vegan snacks, you’ll not only be satisfying your taste buds but also sparing the lives of countless animals—while ensuring that you’re getting plenty of vitamins and minerals. Let your imagination run wild—you might just stumble upon your next favorite flavor combination. Try a mix of the following animal-free foods:

  • It has been 10 years since PETA Latino was launched, and we have a lot to celebrate. Over the last decade, the group’s work to champion animal rights has included far-reaching social media campaigns, colorful demonstrations, partnerships with compassionate Latino celebrities, and much more. Let’s make a toast to PETA Latino’s 10-year anniversary by looking back at some tremendous moments throughout its history.

    1. PETA Latino Helps End Monkey Experiments in Colombian Lab

After we reported that a decrepit laboratory in Colombia was confining monkeys to rusty cages amid their own waste and feeding them dog kibble, Colombian officials seized all 108 monkeys from the facility and ordered it to end its experiments. And following a major push by PETA Latino and its supporters, the National Institutes of Health ended its funding of this horrific laboratory.

    2. Quintana Roo, Mexico, Leads the Way for Animal Rights

Following pressure from PETA Latino and Mexican animal rights group Animal Heroes, the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico—home of Cancún and Tulum—passed a law banning exhibitions of wildlife in public spaces—including cub-petting operations and other dangerous captive-animal displays. This move came after nearly 50,000 supporters signed PETA Latino’s petition and after actor Ariadne Díaz sent a letter to the president of the Quintana Roo Commission.

Quintana Roo also banned cockfighting, bullfighting, horse-drawn carriages, and other cruelty to animals in 2019 following extensive lobbying by Animal Heroes and local animal protection groups supported by PETA Latino.

    3. Following Our Inspired Campaign, Plans to Free Lolita to a Coastal Sanctuary Were Set in Motion

After a relentless years-long campaign to free Lolita from the smallest orca tank on the planet—where she had been suffering for more than 50 years—the Miami Seaquarium announced plans to release her to a seaside sanctuary. This victory followed PETA Latino’s groundbreaking work for Lolita, which included mobilizing nearly half a million supporters to take action in her behalf, showing up to local government offices and raising hell, hitting the streets for passionate protests to demand that the marine park release her, and collaborating with celebrities such as Kate del Castillo and Alicia Machado to put her story front and center. The group’s extensive campaigns gained widespread attention on social media and received major exposure in news outlets. On August 18, 2023, Lolita died—just months before her return to native waters. Honor her memory by refusing to buy a ticket to any marine park and by continuing to call for the development of coastal sanctuaries.

    4. Amid the War in Ukraine, PETA Latino Helps Mexican Citizens Return Home With Their Animal Companions

After reading in the news that the Mexican government wouldn’t include animal companions in its evacuation plans from Ukraine, PETA Latino sent a letter to Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubón asking that it reconsider. Not long after the letter was published in several well-respected media outlets, the government announced that Mexican citizens could bring their animal companions with them.

    5. Cancún Spay-a-Thon Clinics Help Sterilize More Than 2,800 Dogs and Cats

Since April 2021, PETA Latino has sponsored 11 spay/neuter clinics in the vicinity of Cancún, Mexico, to help combat the deadly companion-animal overpopulation crisis. During the latest event, PETA Latino helped to spay or neuter more than 600 dogs and cats, bringing the total number of animals who have been sterilized to more than 2,800—all at no cost to their guardians.

Attendees whose animals were sterilized received complimentary vegan meals, goodies, and vegan starter kits.

    6. Vegan Nochebuena Giveaways Feed Communities Around the World

For several years, PETA Latino has hosted vegan Nochebuena giveaways ahead of Christmas Eve on the streets of major cities, such as Bogotá, Chicago, Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Miami. Passersby enjoyed a gift of delicious vegan meat and were encouraged to choose animal-friendly options for their Nochebuena dinner table—and thousands of signatures from people pledging to go vegan were collected.

PETA Latino and ‘Pig’ Give Away Vegan Hams for Nochebuena

In Miami, PETA Latino members gave away free vegan hams and Cubanitos to encourage everyone to celebrate Nochebuena, the Christmas Eve holiday celebrated in the Latino community, with a cruelty-free feast.

    7. Thousands Sign PETA Latino’s Petition for Dogs Confined to Roofs

PETA Latino’s campaign for dogs confined to rooftops has given community members guidance on what actions to take if they witness this scenario as well as information on the dangers of leaving dogs outside and how important it is for them to be taken inside and cared for as members of the family. Thousands have pledged never to leave their dogs outdoors.

    8. PETA Latino’s Celebrity Campaigns Make an Impact

PETA Latino has worked with celebrities from across the Spanish-speaking world—including Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza, Ana Bárbara, Sherlyn, Kate del Castillo, Jesse & Joy, George Lopez, Miguel Bernardeau, Marco Antonio Regil, Alicia Machado, Penélope Cruz, Alfonso Herrera, Gaby Moreno, and Carla Morrison—to promote animal rights campaigns. These kind celebrities have attracted attention from the media and have had a major impact on animals’ lives by reaching thousands of their followers and teaching them about having empathy and compassion for all sentient beings.

Kate del Castillo has teamed up with PETA Latino to speak out against bullfighting, a campaign that was covered by major Spanish-language news outlets.

The Mexican-born actor also starred in a video to reveal never-before-seen footage of animals suffering at SeaWorld. In her touching video, Kate explained how orcas’ lives at the marine park are artificial—including how the small tanks they’re confined to for their entire lives can cause them to endure stress, frustration, and depression. Kate’s video was a huge success, amassing thousands of views online and receiving coverage from top news outlets.

Danny Trejo’s iconic public service announcement about the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars was met with overwhelming support, receiving thousands of “likes” and lots of positive comments.

    9. PETA Latino’s Demonstrations Cause a Stir

PETA Latino’s protests in the U.S. and Latin America have made headlines and inspired millions of supporters to take action. From sitting in bathtubs outside the Miami Seaquarium to urge the company to free Lolita from her prison …

… to taking over government buildings in Peru to end bloody bullfighting …

… to holding vigils for individuals who have died at SeaWorld to mark Día de los Muertos …

    protester holding picture of whale

… PETA Latino’s protesters know how to turn heads.

At one of the busiest Forever 21 stores in Mexico City, actor Sofia Sisniega joined PETA Latino to protest the company’s use of wool, prompting many members of the media to witness the commotion.

Ahead of Nochebuena, PETA Latino took over Wynwood Walls in Miami with a provocative performance that featured a nearly nude protester lying on a giant plate to urge passersby to think twice about the millions of pigs who suffer when they’re killed and served as a holiday meal.

    10. PETA Latino’s Social Media Posts Reach Millions

PETA Latino’s innovative social media campaigns have been massively successful. The animated short called “Someday”—which shows the life of a chicken used for food and features music by Morrissey—has garnered more than 25 million views.

The video “¡Gracias!—Un Viaje Animado a un Día de Fiesta en el Matadero,” which exposes how turkeys suffer when they’re slaughtered for Thanksgiving feasts, gained over 42 million views.

The video featuring actor Sherlyn, who spoke out against leaving dogs on rooftops, reached more than 5 million views.

  • Leave “exploiting oysters” off your summer bucket list. These bivalves are a vital part of their environment, and activities like pearl diving—in which divers take oysters from the ocean to crack them open for pearls—can disrupt the delicate balance of the ocean’s ecosystems. Like all our fellow animals, oysters deserve to exist peacefully.

several oysters stacked on each other

    What’s Wrong With Pearl Diving?

Bivalves such as oysters, clams, and mussels are a crucial component of the ocean’s health. As they suck in water to feed on bacteria and phytoplankton, they also ingest pollutants and other harmful chemicals and send the filtered water back into the sea. One oyster can filter 50 gallons of water a day. Cracking open an oyster to remove their pearl can kill them or cause them considerable stress. Much like turtles, oysters hide inside their tightly shut shells when they sense danger.

Oysters produce pearls as a way of protecting themselves from foreign substances. When an irritant—such as a parasite or a grain of sand—enters their shell, oysters secrete minerals that form a pearl over time. Removing it from an oyster leaves them vulnerable to the elements, increasing their chances of contracting a disease. It can also weaken them, rendering them defenseless to predators.

Why You Shouldn’t Support Pearl-Diving Shows

While most pearl diving occurs in oysters’ natural homes, SeaWorld’s pearl-diving shows turn the activity into a sad spectacle for visitors, who watch divers sink into a tank and gather oysters to crack open. Oysters’ pearls are an important part of their bodies’ defense mechanisms—not an object to be stolen and sold.

    Let Bivalves Be Bivalves

Oysters and other bivalves deserve compassion and don’t exist for humans to eat, exploit, or crack open for decorative jewelry. It’s speciesist to kill them for their pearls or to eat them. You can help by never participating in pearl-diving attractions and by telling SeaWorld to stop exploiting other animals.

  • Not only is down a cruelly obtained material, it could also seriously harm your health. Workers often violently pluck feathers from intelligent, loving ducks and geese while they’re still alive or slit the birds’ throats—often when they’re improperly stunned and still conscious—before stuffing the feathers into down bedding, pillows, and jackets. These down-filled items can cause inflammatory reactions in humans that can lead to serious and lifelong health issues.

What Is Feather Duvet Lung Disease, and Why Is It Dangerous?

Feather duvet lung disease is a form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by repeated, long-term exposure to goose and duck feathers. Proteins in the feathers cause inflammation in lungs’ air sacs, leading to a variety of symptoms, including shortness of breath, coughing, chest pain, dizziness, runny nose, and eye irritation. Symptoms can develop in a matter of weeks or even up to five years after exposure, so the disease can be difficult to diagnose properly. If left untreated or misdiagnosed, the condition can lead to permanent lung damage.

xray showing human lungs with pneumonia

How Can I Avoid Feather Duvet Lung Disease?

The best thing you can do to avoid developing this life-threatening disease is to choose down-free bedding. If you already have feather-filled bedding, you can easily swap it out for vegan options—and see your doctor if you think you might have feather duvet lung disease.

Thankfully, there are countless options on the market that are made from high-quality, animal-friendly materials. Our guides to vegan bedding, pillows, jackets, and sleeping bags will help you find the right product. Here are some picks to get you started on your search:

  • Let’s go, gamers! On September 10, PETA is calling on all gamers—from pros to noobs—to boost our Global Gaming for Animals Day (GGAD). The objective? To help our fellow animals.

global gaming for animals day pixelated bird overlaid on a light blue background

For GGAD, we’re asking Twitch streamers to give PETA a 1-up by promoting animal rights. Gamers can help us raise funds for the important work that we do, such as shutting down laboratories that use and kill animals in cruel experiments and launching hard-hitting investigations into the meat, egg, dairy, and fishing industries.

Make this GGAD count by speaking up for animals. Here are some of PETA’s favorite animal-friendly games.

    Fable II

PETA honored this game with our Proggy Award for the Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008 for its strong pro-vegan theme. In the virtual fight between good and evil, characters powered by tofu rack up “purity” points, but those who eat meat become corrupted.

Fable II is available on Xbox 360.

    Kitten Squad

In PETA’s own role-playing adventure game, players join a squad of animal abuser–fighting kittens in their quest to liberate animals from exploitation. The game’s purrtagonists take on a series of enthralling, action-packed missions, such as fighting evil robots in order to free orcas from a marine-park prison and whisking sheep away from the evil Sheep Puncher.

Kitten Squad is available on PS4, PC, and Mac as well as on IOS and Android devices.

    Nintendogs

PETA named Nintendogs the Best Animal-Friendly Game in 2006 for teaching players valuable lessons about caring for companion dogs. While players feed, walk, and play with virtual dogs, they learn that companion animals require a lifetime commitment of love, care, and attention.

Adopting a dog on impulse or giving one as a gift can lead to disaster because many families may not be ready to commit to caring for an animal—and it fuels the companion-animal homelessness crisis. But thanks to games like Nintendogs, children can still play with puppies without taking on the responsibility of caring for a real-life companion.

Nintendogs is playable on Nintendo DS.

    Sims 3

PETA gave Sims 3 our Most Animal-Friendly Game Award in 2009 for teaching players about the benefits of eating with compassion. In the game, characters who eat vegan foods—from tofu dogs to ratatouille—enjoy longer lives and age more slowly. If your Sim eats meat, they’ll get sick—much like many meat-eaters in real life.

Sims 3 is available on PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and Wii.

    Sonic the Hedgehog

This iconic franchise follows Sonic—a hedgehog who can run at supersonic speed—in his efforts to defeat Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist who turns animals into his evil sidekicks. While players zoom through treacherous landscapes to collect coins and fight off enemies, they’ll also thwart the experimenter’s wicked plans.

Sonic Origins, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic Superstars can be played on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Microsoft Windows.

    Steer Madness

In this single-player video game, the player assumes the role of Bryce, a walking, talking cow who, after being freed from a slaughterhouse, is determined to turn everyone vegan and end the exploitation of animals. Throughout the game, the player embarks on several daring missions to save animals, conduct undercover investigations, raise funds to support activism, and more.

Steer Madness is available on PC and on mobile devices.

    Stray

Stray follows the story of a stray cat who journeys through a post-apocalyptic landscape in order to find his way back to his family. The game broke records on Twitch, inspired countless fundraisers for animal shelters, and showed thousands of players that the “great outdoors” is a perilous place for cats. It was released to overwhelmingly pawsitive reviews, was honored as PlayStation Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards 2022 and won Best Indie at The Game Awards 2022.

PETA also gave the game’s creator our 2022 Company of the Year award for inspiring players to empathize with real stray cats. Around 70 million cats and dogs are homeless in the U.S. at any given time—and Stray drives home the message that companion animals need homes, families, and protection.

Players can download Stray on PS4, PS5, and PC.

image from the video game Stray© Stray

    Untitled Goose Game

In this game, players act as geese who are trying to reclaim their village from invasive humans. The game gets many things right about geese: They’re intelligent, natural problem-solvers who simply want to live in peace. PETA even gave the creators a Hero to Geese Award for teaching players that geese are sentient, emotional beings with their own feelings and interests.

Untitled Goose Game is available on PC and Mac, Nintendo Switch, PS4, or Xbox One.

    Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire

In this action-farming game, players take control of Voltaire—a rebellious vampire who abandons his taste for blood in favor of eating plant-based foods. Voltaire embarks on a whirlwind of exciting adventures to prove to his father—the infamously bloodthirsty vampire Dracula—that vampires can thrive on a no-kill diet.

Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire is available on Steam Deck and PC.

  • A year after being freed from a dog-breeding hellhole, Mabel the beagle is living the life she always deserved.

She spent about seven years imprisoned in a laboratory-supplying breeding prison owned and operated by Envigo. After PETA’s undercover investigation exposed suffering, neglect, and miserable confinement at the facility, Mabel—along with nearly 4,000 other beagles—was finally liberated.

Like the dogs shown in the photo above, Mabel likely suffered in a steel cage, surrounded by the deafening cries of thousands of other beagles who were intensively confined at Envigo’s dog-breeding prison.

Mabel was one of the oldest beagles to survive the systemic neglect—and thanks to PETA’s shelter, her life looks very different now.

brown and white beagle named Mabel wearing a floral print bandana while sitting on a black galaxy-print rug

For Natalie, the PETA employee who adopted her, it was love at first sight. Nowadays, Mabel is nearly inseparable from her doting family, whether they’re going for a stroll…

Mabel also enjoys lots of attention and one-on-one time at home.

She even accompanies Natalie to PETA’s headquarters—the Sam Simon Center in Norfolk, Virginia—where she’s showered with affection and healthy treats from other adoring employees.

Here’s Mabel at the PETA office again, cheering on our hardworking staff members as they help other individuals just like her:

In the safety of a loving home and community, she can now do the things dogs enjoy the most, like going on adventures, making new friends, and of course, getting into mischief.

Mabel is treated as every dog should be now that she gets the love, attention, and respect she always deserved.

Mabel’s Former Prison Has Closed Down—but You Can Help Other Dogs Like Her

While we celebrate Mabel’s one-year anniversary of freedom from a breeding operation—and the fact that no beagle will suffer there ever again—countless other animals are still confined to laboratory suppliers’ cages. They need your help.

This Australia-based company uses cactus leather from Desserto to create fashionable, sustainable, and long-lasting bags.

    *****

Many brands offer plant-based, vegan leather options, and we can’t wait to see more join the movement. The leather industry kills animals and destroys the environment. Choose vegan materials—such as leather made from apples, cacti, mushrooms, pineapples, oranges, mangoes, and other plants—in order to make a difference for animals and the planet.

  • Make the most of your summer with a bucket list that combines compassion and adventure. Activities like hiking and hosting a vegan cookout are great ways to advocate for animals while having an unforgettable summer.

Here are 10 animal-friendly ideas to add to your summer bucket list:

    1. Attend a Demo or Table at an Event

Become part of PETA’s Action Team to get alerts about actions occurring in your area. If no events are nearby, you can still take action for animals. Check out our guide to tabling to learn how you can set up your own animal advocacy table at local events.

    2. Go Camping

Camping is a classic summer bucket list idea. It’s easy to keep your camping trip compassionate with down-free sleeping bags and vegan s’mores. Dandies has delicious gelatin-free marshmallows that are the perfect size for s’mores. And be sure to grab a shirt from the PETA Shop to spread the message to your fellow campers.

    3. Go Hiking

Wear hiking shoes or boots that are made from vegan materials instead of ones made of animals’ skin.

Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and vegan snacks.

    4. Visit the Beach

Show up in style with “PETA-Approved Vegan” swimwear, and get active with a volleyball from Eco Sports, another “PETA-Approved Vegan” company.

Make sure your sunscreen and snacks are cruelty-free, too. Brush On Block offers a number of vegan sunscreen options for your outdoor summer activities.

Step up your activism and write a vegan message in the sand, or keep it simple by picking a tote or a cap that makes a statement.

    5. Read a Book

Crack open a book about animals or animal rights and share it with friends and family. Check out the PETA Shop for some great books to add to your bucket list.

free the animals book on a table next to tea

    6. Go ‘Trash Fishing’

Don’t remove fish from their homes. Clean up their space instead by fishing for trash. Get a Trash Fishing Provisions Kit from the PETA Shop to get started.

    8. Host a Vegan Cookout

Invite people over and introduce them to some of your favorite vegan foods. PETA’s Grillin’ Without Killin’ Apron is the perfect accessory for when you’re grilling veggies or vegan burgers and hot dogs for your guests. Take your activism a step further by turning your cookout into a fundraiser.

    9. Try a New Vegan Restaurant, or Take a Vegan Cooking Class

Check out that vegan restaurant you’ve been wanting to try. If you’d rather stay home to avoid the summer heat, try a vegan recipe you’ve never made before. Plenty of cookbooks are available on PETA’s website. Just starting your vegan journey? Sign up for a vegan cooking class to get inspired.

    9. Travel Somewhere New and Try New Things

Go somewhere you’ve never been, or do something you’ve never done before. Just make sure to leave animal attractions off the itinerary. Book a trip with PETA Business Friend Vegan Travel Asia by VegVoyages for an animal-friendly adventure.

If you go through a travel agency that promotes animal attractions, inform the company about the cruelty of activities that exploit animals and urge it to drop them from its offerings. Planning to fly? Bring some free vegan starter kits and other PETA literature to put in airline seat pockets.

    10. Visit or Volunteer at a Sanctuary for Farmed Animals

For a more direct way to help animals, plan to visit a sanctuary for animals who’ve been rescued from the meat, egg, and dairy industries. If there’s one close by, you can check for opportunities to volunteer. Learn how to tell if a place is a real sanctuary before you visit.

    *****

These are just a few of the ways you can make a difference for animals with your summer bucket list. If these ideas don’t interest you, there are countless other options. You can make this the summer you kick Starbucks to the curb until it ditches its unfair vegan milk upcharge, encourage friends and family to try more vegan foods, or apply to work at PETA.

Whatever you end up doing, remember to keep animal suffering out of the equation. Now get out there, make a difference for our fellow animals, and have a super summer!

  • After hearing from PETA, Purple Carrot is ending its contract with its Thai supplier and switching to coconut milk from Sri Lanka and the Philippines. The change came after PETA informed the vegan meal kit company about how the Thai coconut industry abuses monkeys by chaining them and forcing them to climb trees to pick coconuts.

purple carrot promotional image with box and various meals and ingredients© Purple Carrot

From December 2021 to July 2022, PETA Asia conducted its third investigation into Thailand’s coconut industry, in which chained monkeys are forced to spend long hours climbing tall trees and picking heavy coconuts. In response to international criticism following the release of PETA Asia’s two previous investigations, the Thai government and companies that make coconut products have claimed that monkeys are no longer used in the making of exported products. But PETA Asia’s latest investigation confirmed that rampant abuse of primates is still going unchecked—and that Thai coconut industry insiders are deliberately hiding monkey labor in their supply chain.

If you’re wondering how you can help monkeys used in the coconut industry, the best thing you can do is avoid companies that source canned coconut milk from Thailand. Only buy canned coconut milk from monkey labor–free brands you can find in grocery stores and from meal-delivery companies like Purple Carrot that have made the switch to non-Thai coconut milk.

Here’s a helpful list of meal-delivery companies that don’t support forced monkey labor:

The Teriyaki Veg sandwich, a meatless version of the chain’s popular Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sub, features vegan chicken made from peas, rice, and broad beans that’s smothered in a sweet and tangy sauce. We’re thrilled to see Subway launch an option that spares the lives of countless chickens, who are playful, intelligent individuals who don’t want to die to be on a sandwich.

Like other offerings at Subway, you can customize the Teriyaki Veg with your favorite toppings and sauces, like olives, jalapeños, avocado, mustard, and Subway vinaigrette.

The sandwich, created as a collaboration between Subway México and EligeVeg (“ChooseVeg” in English), is just one example of the chain’s effort to include new vegan options at locations worldwide—even while it fails to do so in the U.S.

Subway U.K. has offered several sandwiches with animal-friendly proteins and cheeses, including the Plant-based Steak, the Meatless Meatball Marinara, the T.L.C. (Tastes Like Chicken), and the P.I.B. (Plants in Blanket), a limited-time holiday offering that featured vegan sausage wrapped in pig-free bacon.

While the Veggie Delite sub is still a vegan staple stateside, the chain hasn’t tested another animal-free meat option since the Beyond Meatball Marinara sandwich in 2019. We hope Subway brings menu items like the Teriyaki Veg to stores in the U.S., where consumers are increasingly choosing to eat vegan for the benefit of animals, the planet, and their own health.

  • Why are some of the unhealthiest meals being served to the sickest people? A rejected PETA U.K. ad highlighted the hypocrisy of the U.K.’s National Health Service for allowing bacon, sausages, and other meats to be served to hospital patients when it’s been proved that eating animal flesh is more likely to lead to serious health conditions.

text at top reads "Still serving meat? How about a cigarette, too" with image in the middle of a plate on a hospital food tray with cigarettes and meat sausages. The text below reads "Eating processed meat increases cancer risk. NHS, go vegan."

The same thing is happening in hospitals across the U.S., where meals laden with animal-derived saturated fats, salt, added sugars, and cholesterol are being served to patients in hospital beds and in cafeterias. In some American hospitals, you can find fast-food restaurants with no healthy vegan options on the menu—for example, a McDonald’s inside Tampa General Hospital and a Chick-fil-A in the Detroit Medical Center.

Vegan food is medicine. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that vegans have a lower risk of death from heart disease, lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, lower body mass indexes, and lower rates of cancer, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. So it makes sense that hospitals should serve healthy vegan food if they want to help patients heal.

Improving health isn’t the only reason patients should go vegan. The lives of animals used for food are cut short and they’re treated like objects in the meat, egg, and dairy industries. When you go vegan, you take a stand against these exploitative industries.

Forward-Thinking Institutions Are Turning the Tide

Some institutions are realizing the importance of feeding patients healthy meals. All 11 New York City hospitals serve vegan meals as the default option in order to encourage people to make healthier choices that also save animals.

Atlantic Health System in New Jersey, the University of Florida’s Shands Hospital, and National Jewish Health/Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver are just a few of the institutions nationwide that offer animal-free meals and encourage patients to ditch meat for their health. Santa Clara Valley Healthcare in California introduced a vegan food program, Universal Meals, which focuses on preventive medicine through food, and it’s even available in hospital cafeterias for employees and visitors.

The Cardiac Wellness Program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York helps patients who have been diagnosed with heart or blood vessel disease reduce their cholesterol and blood pressure, lose weight, improve their energy, and even reverse type 2 diabetes. The outpatient program, a whole-foods, plant-based nutrition plan, has had such success that the hospital introduced vegan meals for inpatients and plays the documentary Forks Over Knives in hospital rooms to teach patients about how animal-free eating can help them get and stay healthy.plate of fresh spring rolls with a bowl of peanut sauce in the middle

Don’t gamble with your health—go vegan today, and urge hospitals to do so, too. By making the change, you’ll also be saving the lives of countless chickens, fish, pigs, cows, and other animals who don’t want to die to end up on your plate.

  • Are you expecting a baby? Congratulations! You may be preparing your registry right now and wondering what to add to the list. When you’re doing so, make sure that your registry is animal-friendly by adding vegan and animal test–free products. Animals are loving parents just like you, so honor them by choosing items that aren’t made from ingredients like beeswax and honey stolen from hardworking bees or milk taken from cows or goats who need it to feed their babies.

Here are some vegan baby products you can add to your Target registry:

The Honest Company Calm Bubble Bath

This gentle lavender-scented foaming bubble bath is made with chamomile and aloe to help soothe your baby, but you can also use it for some self-care.

Babo Botanicals Moisturizing 2-in-1 Oatmilk & Calendula Baby Shampoo & Wash

For babies with dry or irritated skin, this 2-in-1 baby shampoo and bodywash will nourish and soften their skin with calming oat milk and calendula oil.

Baby Bum Natural Monoi Coconut Balm

Made with coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, aloe, and other hydrating ingredients, this balm helps lock in moisture to protect your baby’s skin from dryness.

    Kipling Alanna Diaper Bag

You’ll need a good diaper bag to hold all the essentials, so choose one that isn’t made from cows’ skin. This nylon bag is durable and easy to clean, with pockets to help organize it all.

Order Your FREE Vegan Starter Kit

The Honest Company Plant-Based Baby Wipes

These extra-large, super-soft wipes are made without plastic, fragrances, parabens, and chlorine processing. Plus, they get rave reviews on Target’s website.

The Honest Company Clean Conscientious Disposable Diapers

Pair those baby wipes with The Honest Company’s disposable diapers, which are eco-friendly and hypoallergenic.

Babyganics Foaming Dish & Bottle Soap

Make quick work of washing baby bottles and dishes with this animal-friendly dish soap.

    Burt’s Bees Baby Dusting Powder

Prevent diaper rash by keeping your baby’s skin soft and dry with this talc-free Burt’s Bees baby powder.

Babyganics 3x Laundry Detergent Fragrance Free

You may be surprised by how much laundry a tiny baby can make, but this detergent from Babyganics can help you get everything as clean as can be in no time. It’s also safe to use on cloth diapers.

Motherlove More Milk Moringa Vegan Capsules

Breastfeeding can be difficult, and lactation consultants may recommend herbal supplements to the breastfeeding parent in order to help increase the milk supply. This one comes in a vegan capsule, and there’s a fenugreek-free version for those who are sensitive to this herb.

Boobie Bar Superfood Vegan Lactation Bars

If you want the benefits of a lactation supplement but in the form of a tasty snack, try these oatmeal chocolate chip bars.

We Are Paradoxx Mini Humans Baby Bubble Bath Soaks

This apple- and aloe-scented bubble bath is cleansing, soothing, and gentle enough for eczema-prone skin.

The Honest Company Postnatal Hair Vegan Wellness Supplement

  • We’re kicking off summer by showcasing 10 delicious vegan hot dogs and sausages from restaurants and food trucks across the U.S. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that a whopping 150 million hot dogs are consumed on the Fourth of July alone. This summer, make the compassionate choice to try one of these vegan dogs instead. Pigs and cows are gentle, playful individuals who don’t want to die for your meal. These vegan dogs are tastier, better for your health, and, best of all, better for animals.

Here are this year’s winners, in no particular order:

    The Frankenstand

    Scarecrow

    Los Angeles, California

There’s nothing scary about the food at this haunted hot dog stand—because it’s all vegan. We love its horror-themed creations, including the Scarecrow, a classic frank dressed with esquites, vegan Cotija cheese, green onions, egg-free Sriracha mayo, and a lime wedge. You can keep up with The Frankenstand’s whereabouts and changing menu items by following it on Instagram.

two vegan hot dogs topped with esquites, vegan feta, cilantro, and a sauce

    Sporty Dog Creations

    Vegan Buffalo Blu

    Baltimore, Maryland

This hot dog restaurant is not fully vegan, but it has some stellar animal-friendly options. Our pick is the Vegan Buffalo Blu, topped with Buffalo jackfruit, caramelized onions, and vegan blue cheese drizzle. If you want to try more selections, these are vegan if you order the vegan dog specifically: the Baltimore Black Sox Dog, the Pineapple Express Dog, the Jerk Mac and Cheese Dog (ask for the vegan mac and cheese), and the Voyager.

vegan sausage in a bun topped with buffalo jackfruit and onions

    Pingala Cafe

    Bahn Me Dawg

    Burlington, Vermont

Pingala Cafe is a fully vegan restaurant that’s serving up food truck–inspired cuisine, and many of its menu items were inspired by dishes from various cultures. One example is the Bahn Me Dawg. It’s a hickory-smoked carrot that’s marinated and oven-roasted, then served in a locally baked hoagie roll with crispy skin tofu, ginger pickled veggies, cilantro, smoked chili aioli, Korean BBQ sauce, and toasted coconut crunch.

    Kale My Name

    Big Daddy Special

    Chicago, Illinois

Kale My Name is an outstanding vegan restaurant with an eclectic menu full of delicious dishes. One of our faves is the Big Daddy Special, which features not one but two Beyond sausages in a bun topped with grilled onions, relish, and mustard with side of fries. It’s a dish for those with big appetites, and it won’t disappoint.

    Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck

    Rad Dawg

    Portland, Maine

For a German-style dog, head to Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck and try the Rad Dawg. It’s a charbroiled, pig-friendly frank topped with tangy sauerkraut and a house Bavarian mustard on a grilled sub roll. Check the truck’s Instagram page for its schedule and location.

vegan hot dog topped with sauerkraut and grainy mustard

    The Wienery

    Vegan Italian Warsaw

    Minneapolis, Minnesota

This Minneapolis diner isn’t fully vegan, but it’s prepping some authentic Chicago-style vegan dogs. Pick a style and choose from three kinds of animal-friendly dogs: the brat, Italian, or classic tofu dog. We recommend the Vegan Italian Warsaw, which is topped with Düsseldorf mustard and sauerkraut.

vegan sausage in a bun topped with peppers and onions

    VEG-N

    Coney Dog

    Lansing, Michigan

VEG-N is a vegan restaurant, so you can’t go wrong ordering anything on the menu, but we suggest trying the Coney Dog. This chili cheese dog features house-made Detroit-style chili and is topped with onions, cheddar, and mustard. For the dog itself, you can choose from a LightLife hot dog or a house-made carrot dog.

    Doggystyle

    Chicago Hot

    Sarasota, Florida

At Doggystyle, you can try several vegan options, including the Chicago Hot, which features a Field Roast dog topped with hot pepper relish, yellow mustard, red onion, diced pickle, diced tomato, a sport pepper, and celery salt.

    Chilly Dawgz

    Vegan Chilly Cheez Dawg

    Thomasville/Harrisburg/York, Pennsylvania

Head to Chilly Dawgz to try the Vegan Chilly Cheez Dawg. It’s an animal-free frank on a vegan soft roll topped with house-made vegan chili and dairy-free cheese shreds. Other menu options include the Vegan Dawggie and the Vegan Chicago Dawggie.

    Wiener Kitchen

For a dog like no other, try Wiener Kitchen’s Vegan dog. It features a walnut and wild rice link topped with roasted cauliflower, green tomato relish, pickled Brussels kraut, and whole-grain Dijon mustard. You won’t want to miss this unique creation.

  • A scoop ahead of National Ice Cream Month in July, PETA’s “Nice Cream Trail” dipped into top Maryland shops to encourage residents and tourists to sprinkle kindness by buying vegan ice cream. It’s never been easier to spare cows suffering in the dairy industry, especially with Maryland’s many options. Choosing a compassionate cone of chilled delights made from plants—rather than a bowl of frozen bovine mammary secretions—helps stop perpetual abuse to mother cows and their stolen babies, combat the climate catastrophe, and improve human health.

Why Scope Out Vegan Scoops for National Ice Cream Month?

The demand for vegan food keeps increasing, and one projection for the global vegan ice cream market’s growth between 2022 and 2026 is $1.55 billion. Nondairy ice cream has bloomed into a big industry, offering wide varieties of intriguing flavors and textures to entice multiple palates and dietary needs. Reportedly, a 300% increase in sales of plant-based ice cream occurred just since 2018, with an accompanying explosion in product availability and quality.

People are more curious than ever to try vegan scoops, whether it be for ethical or environmental reasons—soy or oat milk requires roughly 90% less water than cow’s milk—for their health, or simply because it tastes good. Recent vegan ice cream innovations have far outdone previous options so that even the average customer feels the products are familiar now.

The global vegan food industry will likely hit $91.9 billion by 2027, and forecasts predict the plant-based food market will blossom at a compounded annual growth rate of 18.1% by then. Going vegan spares nearly 200 animals each year incessant suffering and terrifying deaths while benefiting human well-being by reducing the risk of developing various types of cancer, heart disease, strokes, and diabetes.

Cows are intelligent, gentle animals who mourn the deaths of those they love and sometimes shed tears over their loss. The mother-calf bond is particularly strong. There are countless reports of mother cows who, once separated from their calves, continue to call and search frantically for them.

PETA encourages everyone to reject cruel animal abuse and protect both the planet and their health by ditching dairy and choosing vegan ice creams. Every compassionate person who embarks on the Nice Cream Trail and decides to go vegan will help end speciesism and prevent a lifetime of suffering for all animals needlessly raised and slaughtered by humans.

Kopi luwak, also known as “civet coffee,” is cruelly cultivated by exploiting civet cats. Dairy creamers are made of milk stolen from sensitive mother cows and their babies. • Athletic brand Nike recently announced its commitment to using “responsible” wool in its products, but what does that really mean for animals? The brand merely adopted the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which—unfortunately—is nothing but a humane-washing tactic that does nothing to protect sheep from exploitation and abuse.

Why Doesn’t the RWS Protect Animals?

There is no such thing as “cruelty-free,” “humane,” or “sustainable” wool. PETA has now released 14 exposés of 117 wool-industry operations on four continents revealing that sheep are mutilated and abused for their wool and sometimes even skinned alive. Patagonia—a company that has adopted the RWS—has been found to obtain wool from producers that violate these standards.

Speciesism is at the core of the issue here. Sheep used for their wool are seen as objects by the industry that profits off them, not as individuals with unique desires and a right to a life free of fear. Because the wool industry is inherently exploitative, no company policy can protect these animals from abuse.

PETA wool investigation in Australia showing a lame sheep on their side, panting hard in a pen

What Can Nike Do to Protect Sheep Used for Wool?

If Nike truly wants to follow through on its commitment to protecting animals, the only thing it could do is drop wool altogether. Vegan materials are better for animals and the planet, and Nike has already used many innovative fabrics in its products.

Please Pledge Never to Buy Wool

As a consumer, you have the power to tell retailers you don’t want to see wool on their shelves. Always check the labels on sweaters, other garments, and blankets before buying them. For the sake of sheep and the environment, if a label says “wool,” please leave the item on the shelf.

  • Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a vibrant South American city with a host of appealing sights, sounds, and tastes for travelers to explore, from eclectic restaurants to modern art museums. There’s really no end to what you can do in this city, so having a travel game plan can help you make the most of your time there. PETA Latino has prepared this essential guide so that your trip will go as smoothly as possible.

night time scene of buenos aires' obelisk in the middle of a bustling intersection

What Not to Do When Visiting Buenos Aires

When you’re preparing for your trip, it’s important to be aware of animal abuse and tourist traps so that you don’t contribute to any form of animal exploitation. By doing so, you can ensure that you have a meaningful experience in the city while protecting animals from harm. Here are some things you should avoid doing during your visit, because there are much better activities that don’t exploit animals:

    • Don’t visit marine parks or petting zoos.

Animals aren’t here for our entertainment. At marine parks, they’re often kept in inadequate tanks and with incompatible tankmates. They deserve to be left in their natural homes, not torn away from their families or bred so that humans can gawk at them. At Mundo Marino—the largest marine park in Argentina—Kshamenk the orca has been imprisoned for 30 years, in a tank so small that he swims in circles endlessly.

Petting zoos and any other displays that allow visitors to touch animals are dangerous for both groups. In many cases, animals in petting zoos don’t get enough food, water, or rest, and they may snap at visitors. It’s also simply speciesist to assume that we should be able to view or touch any animal whenever we want, disregarding what they want.

    • Don’t ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

Forcing horses to pull heavy carriages is cruel, and many of them suffer from a host of injuries and illnesses from toiling day in and day out.

    • Don’t attend horse races or polo matches.

Horses used for racing are forced to sprint beyond their limits, which often leads to injuries, many of which are fatal. You can enjoy many sports that don’t involve animal exploitation—including Argentina’s favorite one, soccer!

group of humans riding horses in race

    • Don’t buy souvenirs made from animal skins.

When you’re looking for souvenirs, be sure to avoid those made from cow’s skin, fox fur, and other cruelly obtained materials. Our vegan guide to traditional Latin American items can help you find the best animal-friendly souvenirs.

Things to Do When Visiting Buenos Aires

The opportunities are endless in this extraordinary city, and there’s truly something for every type of traveler. Here’s just a taste of what you can do and see in the city that’s friendly to animals:

    • Try some of the best vegan food in the world.

The vegan food revolution is alive and well in South America, and Buenos Aires is a hub for new restaurants. Check out some of those we’ve listed below.

    • Visit historic city sites.

Buenos Aires has a rich history, so you won’t want to miss what it has to offer. The Obelisco is a national landmark that commemorates the founding of the city, so be sure to check it out if you’re a history buff. If the weather is nice, head to Lagos de Palermo to enjoy peaceful scenery and take a ride in a pedal boat. Take a walk among blooming roses in the Rosedal de Palermo. In the city’s Chinatown, you can visit a variety of shops and, if you’re there in January or February, enjoy the Chinese New Year celebrations. If you’re interested in a more macabre site, check out La Recoleta Cemetery, a beautiful public cemetery where some of Buenos Aires’ famous former residents are entombed. Finally, museum lovers won’t want to miss the Museo Histórico Nacional, where you can learn more about Argentina’s history from pre-Hispanic life to contemporary society.

lagos de palermo park in buenos aires, argentina with people sitting along the lakeside and tall buildings in the distance

    • See some of Argentina’s natural wonders.

Argentina is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you can take some of that beauty in without venturing out of the city center. The Jardín Botánico, which is home to nearly 1,500 plant species, features libraries, greenhouses, walking paths, sculptures, monuments, and fountains.

    • Take in culture at one of the city’s many art museums.

Buenos Aires is a cultural and artistic hub as well as home to many working artists. The Museo Moderno hosts more than 7,000 works of art by Argentine and international artists. Check out the National Museum of Decorative Art to see important design works, historic room displays, and other fascinating objects. MALBA’s collections and exhibitions focus on Latin American art from the 20th century to the present, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes hosts a variety of works from artists such as Rembrandt, Goya, and Van Gogh.

    • Enjoy a tango show or a visit to the theater.

Tango dancing, which originated along the border between Argentina and Uruguay in the 1880s, is a major part of cultural life in Buenos Aires. La Boca is one of the many neighborhoods where you can see tango shows on the street, but you can also head to the many clubs, theaters, and cultural centers to see other shows or even take a class. And if you’re interested in opera, ballet, the orchestra, or other kinds of performances, you might want to see what’s on the calendar at Teatro Colón.

    • Shopaholic? Visit Buenos Aires’ street fairs and shopping centers.

The city’s Feria de San Telmo is a street fair open every Sunday, where you can find antiques and cultural items, see tango shows, and check out some local vegan food offerings. For upscale shopping in a beautiful, historic setting, head to Galerías Pacífico.

    • See a soccer game at La Bombonera.

If you’re a soccer fan—or just a sports fan who loves a good game—check out Argentina’s national sport at La Bombonera, an iconic stadium that’s home to one of the country’s top soccer clubs.

By being a responsible traveler, you can enjoy all the wonders that Buenos Aires has to offer without contributing to animal exploitation. Learn more about how to be a responsible tourist:

  • Some interest groups tout June as National Dairy Month, but this year, a giant PETA billboard advocating for cows could help change that. Featuring an image of a cow mired in manure with a swollen udder, the sky-high appeal for animals sits atop Waldo Pizza in Kansas City, Missouri—where it may inspire some diners to opt for a vegan slice.

BB showing a photo of a cow with the caption "Cows Suffer - Their Calves are stolen from them, then they're killed for meat"

How PETA’s Ad Exposes Dairy Month as a Sham

PETA’s ad in Kansas City—in place from May 31 through June 26—has an anti-Dairy Month message:

Cows suffer. Their calves are stolen from them,
then they’re killed for meat. Ditch dairy. Go vegan.

Urging everyone to ditch dairy and spare cows a life of suffering, PETA offers free recipes, articles, and resources to show how easy it is to prepare vegan food at home or to find it in restaurants in the City of Fountains and many other places around the country.

PETA ad above Waldo Pizza in Kansas City, Missouri, that reads "Cows suffer. Their calves are stolen from them, then they’re killed for meat. Ditch dairy. Go vegan."

Waldo Pizza—located at 7433 Broadway St.—has a vegan menu with plenty of animal-friendly “meat” and “cheese” options. PETA chose to place its ad above the restaurant to show everyone how easy it is to choose foods that are made from plants instead of the flesh or secretions of another species.

PETA’s new ad comes after the University of Copenhagen released a study detailing the dire conditions faced by cows in the dairy industry:

[T]he welfare is worse with cattle in the most common dairy production systems in opposition to cattle in the most common beef production systems.

Why Ditching Bovine Milk for Dairy Month and Beyond Is Crucial

If speciesist humans were to choose to end their addiction to bovine mammary secretions, it would help do the following:

    • Spare countless exploited cows and their calves
    • Improve everyone’s health
    • Give the environment a better chance amid the climate catastrophe

calf drinking from mother in green field

Why Cows Deserve Respect This Dairy Month

Cows are intelligent, gentle animals who mourn the deaths of those they love and sometimes shed tears over their loss. The mother-calf bond is particularly strong. There are countless reports of mother cows who, once separated from their calves, continue to call and search frantically for their babies, who are sold to veal or beef farms.

In the dairy industry, workers confine cows amid filth, tear calves away from their mothers within a day of birth, and steal the milk meant to nourish them so companies lacking compassion can sell it to humans. It’s standard industry practice to forcibly and artificially inseminate cows—workers insert an arm into the animals’ rectum and a metal rod to deliver semen into their vagina—and to send them to an agonizing death in a slaughterhouse once their bodies wear out.

PETA’s investigations into dairy facilities have found workers electroshocking cows in the face, hitting them with poles and a cane, and abusing them in other horrific ways.

How Drinking Cow’s Milk Harms Human Health and the Planet

Humans are the only animals who drink milk beyond the age of weaning and who knowingly consume the milk of another species. Consuming bovine mammary secretions can cause a host of health problems, including broken bones, prostate and ovarian cancer, lactose intolerance, and allergies.

PETA ad with cows mired in manure that reads "Do you know where your milk comes from? Think before you drink. Dump dairy."

Fortunately, the consumption of dairy milk has been declining for years as conscientious consumers turn to healthier and tastier vegan milks. Half of Americans now consume plant-based milks, and one-third of Americans drink them weekly. An estimated 65% of the world’s human population is lactose intolerant.

According to the United Nations, about a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are linked to food production. The largest percentage of these gases comes from the dairy, meat, and egg industries. The horrific rate at which humans use cows for their mammary secretions—and their flesh for food and leather—is destroying the environment.

The most compassionate, effective, and immediate way to take action against the climate catastrophe is to go vegan. The increased demand for vegan milk from those concerned about the abuse of animals, their own health, and the environment makes this kind choice that much easier.

How You Can Help Cows During National Dairy Month and All Year Long

No animals should suffer so that speciesist humans can steal their babies and their milk. Do your part to leave cows in peace by ditching dairy and opting for delicious vegan milks, cheeses, and yogurts. Start by ordering free vegan starter kits for yourself and some friends:

  • When your skin is prone to dryness, irritation, redness, or itchiness, it helps to be extra careful about the products you use. Luckily, it’s easier than ever to find animal-friendly ones that are great for sensitive skin. In your search, opt for nourishing ingredients that come from plants and aren’t derived from speciesist and selfish cruelty to animals.

Bees are killed for their beeswax and honey, which they work hard to produce in order to support their communities. Many skincare products contain ingredients—including lanolin, collagen, squalene made from shark liver, and carmine—that are derived from harming animals.

As you navigate your skincare journey, it’s essential to prioritize animal-friendly options and be mindful of potential irritants. To ensure your sensitive skin receives the gentle care it deserves, steer clear of harsh fragrances, exfoliants, sulfates, and alcohol.

Here are some vegan skincare options across all price points that you can incorporate into your routine:

    Vegan Cleansers for Sensitive Skin

    ACURE Seriously Soothing Cleansing Cream

Peony extract and chamomile leave your face clean, calm, and ready for the day.

    Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser

If your skin is red, itchy, and irritated, this nonfoaming cooling cleanser could be just what you need.

    e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Daily Cleanser

Youth to the People Kale + Green Tea Spinach Vitamins Superfood Cleanser

There’s a reason this cleanser went viral on TikTok—it’s gentle, nourishing, and great for all sensitive skin types.

We love a versatile product, and this one from ACURE can be used as a makeup remover, a chapped skin reliever, or a hydrating facial treatment.

Vitamin C serums can irritate sensitive skin types, but this product contains pomegranate seed oil for a hydrating, skin-brightening delivery.

Dr Botanicals Organic & Botanic Facial Serum

When your skin is feeling unbalanced, reach for this facial serum to help even things out.

    OSEA Hyaluronic Sea Serum

The seaweed and hyaluronic acid in this serum can help give you a hydration boost while smoothing out you skin’s appearance.

Paula’s Choice 1% BHA Sensitive Skin Exfoliant

Those with sensitive skin need to be careful about incorporating exfoliants into their routine, and they should choose chemical options over manual ones. If you select an exfoliant that’s too harsh or use it too often, it can do more harm than good—but this gentle chemical product with 1% salicylic acid is perfect for balancing sensitive skin and unclogging pores. To reduce the chance of additional irritation, start by using it once a week on a day you aren’t using a retinol.

    Vegan Retinols

Alchimie Forever Advanced Retinol Serum With Time-Release Technology

This powerful serum combines antioxidant ingredients and retinol with Alchimie Forever’s proprietary time-release technology, which helps minimize irritation.

    Hylunia Retinol Nightly Renewal Serum

Hylunia’s retinol comes from beta-carotene (not fish livers) and helps regenerate cells and protect skin from free radicals.

    MDSolarSciences MD Revitalize Retinol Serum

The chamomile, aloe, and seaweed extract in this retinol serum will leave your skin feeling soft while the retinol helps even it out.

Pacifica Wake Up Beautiful Retinoid Serum

Traditional retinol can be harsh on sensitive skin types, but the Granactive Retinoid in this serum is a gentler option.

Pro tip: Sun care is an essential part of any skincare routine—especially if you use any sort of retinol product—so check out our cruelty-free sunscreen list for the best mineral SPF options.

Whatever your sensitive skincare routine looks like, be sure to choose products that aren’t tested on animals or made with cruelly derived ingredients. Our cruelty-free database can help you find out whether your favorite brands and products are animal-friendly.

  • Taco Bell has long been a go-to spot for vegans, and now it’s majorly stepping up its game. We’ve been hacking the Crunchwrap for years, but now the beloved Tex-Mex chain is testing a new Vegan Crunchwrap, which comes complete with cow-friendly beef, vegan nacho sauce, and dairy-free sour cream! The exciting new addition is available at these three locations, starting on June 8:

    • 6741 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028
    • 976 Sixth Ave., New York, NY 10018
    • 11893 E. Colonial Dr., Orlando, FL 32826

The offering is available as long as supplies last, so if you’re near any of these locations, go grab yours and show the chain that you want the option to roll out nationwide.

Taco Bell has tested other exciting vegan options in the past. Most recently, it developed a cow-friendly steak in collaboration with Beyond Meat. The Beyond Carne Asada Steak was tested at 50 locations in the Dayton, Ohio, area and could be ordered in any menu item instead of animal flesh at no additional charge.

The chain also tested its new proprietary vegan beef (which is featured in the Vegan Crunchwrap) at several locations in 2021. Both of these delicious meat-free options—which are indistinguishable from Taco Bell’s traditional ground beef and marinated steak options—spared the lives of many cows.

Taco Bell also tested a meatless Naked Chicken Chalupa shell later that same year, which helped spare chickens who are killed for their flesh.
