  • New York: New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) Commissioner Jimmy Oddo unveiled “Get Sheds Down,” a sweeping overhaul of rules governing sidewalk construction sheds and scaffolding that will remove these eyesores from city streets more quickly while redesigning and reimagining those that are needed.

As per details posted on the Website of the City of New York, These sheds, sometimes called scaffolding, can be blight on public spaces and foster illegal activity. The “Get Sheds Down” plan will improve public safety and quality of life by removing them more quickly and replacing them, where possible, with more aesthetic or less intrusive alternatives, like safety netting, that keep New Yorkers safe without creating blight in public space.

For decades, the rules governing construction sheds have incentivized property owners to leave them up for long periods of time instead of completing critical façade work that is often the reason the shed is up in the first place. As a result, New Yorkers are stuck with approximately 9,000 active, permitted construction sheds with an average age of nearly 500 days and spanning more than 2 million linear feet, or nearly 400 miles, about 3 percent of the city’s sidewalk space. Mayor Adams’ “Get Sheds Down” plan will change that paradigm — incentivizing property owners to expedite façade repairs and remove sheds with expired permits from public sidewalks.

At the same time, recognizing the important safety function sheds can play when a building has an unsafe façade, “Get Sheds Down” will make traditional sheds more visually appealing when they are necessary and, where possible, replace them with effective but less intrusive alternatives.

“We have nearly 400 miles of scaffolding in New York City, taking up public space that belongs to New Yorkers and the millions who visit our city every year. Imagine visiting Rome, Tokyo, or Rio and seeing scaffolding everywhere. New Yorkers wouldn’t be happy with these unsightly constructions in other cities, and we shouldn’t be ok with them here at home. For too long, bureaucratic rules have stood in the way of progress, but today, we are turning the page and overhauling these rules from the ground up with our ‘Get Sheds Down’ plan,” said Mayor Adams.

“This plan will flip the script so that property owners are incentivized to complete safety work and remove sheds instead of leaving up these eyesores year after year. This is how we reimagine our city, revitalize our business districts, and build a safer, more welcoming city for all.”

  • Texas: A well-known American business figure, and Republican leader, Javed Anwar has said that Pakistani doctors living in the United States are among the benefactors of the country.

Everyone will have to take individual responsibility for the development of Pakistan and its young generation. If the young generation is equipped with knowledge and expertise in different fields of life, the country will automatically develop.

Javed Anwar, speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the Social Justice, Health, Advocacy, Poverty Alleviation Education (U.S Shape) in the city of Dallas extended his felicitations to Dr. Rao Kamran Ali and his team who realized this need and helped Pakistan. This organization has been established to provide opportunities to the young generation.

He said that if you have courage and passion, no one can stop you from progressing. “The biggest living example of this is myself,” he said.

Javed Anwar announced a donation of 100,000 dollars to US Shape on this occasion and said that if doctors spend only a few thousand dollars every year on providing higher education opportunities to the youth of Pakistan, then we will see a big change in Pakistan.

On this occasion, Masood Khan, the Ambassador of Pakistan to America, said that he is extremely grateful to the US State Department, which has made special arrangements to speed up the visa processing of Pakistani students.

He said that although the rate of arrival of Pakistani students to the United States for higher education is very low compared to other countries, but he hopes that with the efforts of the State Department and especially US Shape, this rate will increase in the next few years. It will double.

Naniel Lain, a member of the Pakistan Desk in the US State Department, said that the US believes in the equal promotion of education throughout the world and in the last few months, millions of foreigners have studied from more than 4,000 colleges and universities in the US. While, some 8 thousand Pakistanis have come to America and received higher education.

He said that although this number is very small for Pakistanis, but this initiative has brought Pakistan to the eighteenth position in the world.

He said that staff there to guide the youth who want to study in America, which is also providing them with financial guidance from admission, but for the last few months there was a problem of issuing visas, which the state has to solve.

The department has issued special instructions after which the process of issuing visas has been expedited, especially education visas are being tried to be made possible.

He said that last month, the American Consulate in Karachi also worked on Saturdays for the issuance of consular education visas.

On this occasion, Rao Kamran Ali, the founder of US Shape, highlighted the aims and objectives of the establishment of US Shape and said that effective change can be brought about in the development of Pakistan only through education.

He said that as an active worker of APPNA, an organization of Pakistani doctors, he made a lot of efforts for higher education of Pakistani students in America, but due to lack of proper planning and lack of interest of the members, this project could not be successful. There was hope.

He said realizing this need, he has laid the foundation of US Shape, which stands for Social Justice, Health, Advocacy, Poverty Alleviation Education.

Rao Kamran Ali thanked all the guests for their presence on this occasion, especially Syed Javed Anwar and Pakistani Ambassador Masood Khan and the representative of the State Department. • The internet was flooded with alarming images, showcasing an unprecedented backlash against the military establishment. Supporters of Imran from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, known as PTI supporters, engaged in destructive activities such as storming the General Headquarters and causing havoc at the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence. They also defaced military monuments and properties across the country. These actions were a stark contrast to the peaceful protests conducted by Mr. Khan and his party in the past, despite facing significant political harassment for over a year. In response, the military crackdown, fueled by anger, was equally brutal. Internet services were suspended, resulting in widespread blackouts and significant financial losses for telecommunication and other industries. Restrictions on public gatherings were imposed, and the military was deployed in Islamabad, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to restore order.

Various conspiracy theories surfaced, suggesting that the destruction of national property, including the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence, was orchestrated by collusion between the establishment and the government to discredit the PTI. However, proving these claims is challenging amidst the constant propaganda from both sides. Nevertheless, there is evidence that PTI members themselves were directly involved in the riots, as confirmed by arrested party members. Regardless of the circumstances, the events of that day represented a dark moment for Pakistan, and it is possible that everyone shares some responsibility for this tragic turn of events. Although Imran Khan was subsequently released by the Islamabad High Court, the distressing events of May 9th have strengthened the heavy-handedness of both the establishment and the incumbent Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government.

What led to the riots on May 9th?

Tensions between the PTI and the establishment-PDM alliance had been escalating since Imran Khan’s removal from the Prime Minister’s office on April 10th, 2022. This incident was another chapter in Pakistan’s volatile civil-military relations, albeit an extreme one. Imran Khan accused the former army chief, Bajwa, of engineering his ousting by leveraging the old guard of Pakistani politics, who had joined forces to form the PDM along with other parties. Many individual parties within the PDM are notorious for dynastic politics and rampant corruption. Imran Khan’s narrative that the establishment was supporting an alleged criminal enterprise like the PDM resonated with many Pakistanis, leading to a surge in support.

However, the tide turned as several PTI leaders, including Shahbaz Gill, and pro-PTI journalists like Imran Riaz, faced antagonism, arrests, and even torture. Police conducted raids on the homes of PTI members without warrants, disregarding the fundamental right to privacy. Leaked audio recordings, of questionable authenticity, consistently tarnished the reputation of local PTI leaders, including Mr. Khan, further undermining the party. International human rights organizations took note as hundreds of cases were filed against Imran Khan. On November 3rd, 2022, an assassination attempt was made on his life, intensifying public anger against the establishment and fueling Imran Khan’s call for fresh elections.

In this precarious political climate, combined with Pakistan’s inflation curse, the protests and riots on May 9th were perhaps inevitable. The most popular political party found itself at odds with the seemingly omnipotent military establishment.

    A victory for the establishment?

The May 9th riots have allowed the military and political elites not only to bring those responsible to justice but also to retaliate against other PTI members and leaders who were not involved. Several PTI leaders have resigned from the party in response to the reprehensible acts on May 9th. While some claim these resignations are coerced, the resignees deny such allegations. The party has suffered significant weakening, with over 7,000 PTI members arrested and more arrests ongoing.

However, the most significant consequence is the impending re-arrest of Imran Khan. Although his previous arrest was deemed unlawful due to its occurrence on court premises, he remains vulnerable to arrest in one of the many cases filed against him.

    Another confrontation on the horizon

Despite calls for dialogue between the PTI and the PDM-establishment alliance in the interest of the nation, it appears that the current army chief is uninterested in any form of negotiation. Internal rumors suggest that he holds disdain for Imran Khan and is working towards reshaping the country’s political landscape without him. However, this presents a formidable challenge due to Imran Khan’s unwavering support from within Pakistan and internationally, including the Pakistani diaspora. Public frustration against the establishment and PDM continues to escalate due to their oppressive tactics, mishandling of the economy, Pakistan’s energy crisis, and the resurgence of the Tehreek-Taliban Pakistan terrorist group. As a result, the stubbornness of the establishment, combined with the animosity of PTI supporters, creates an extremely volatile situation, comparable to a powder keg waiting for a spark to ignite.

  • The BBC has platformed the views of fossil fuel giant Shell’s boss in the latest shocking example of media bias on the climate crisis. In an article titled Oil giant Shell warns cutting production ‘dangerous’, the BBC interviewed Shell chief executive Wael Sawan. At the time of writing on 6 July, the public service broadcaster had the article featured on the front page of its online news site.

The BBC’s bias makes it a fossil fuel industry mouthpiece

The interview with Sawan appears to have come as a result of Shell’s recent announcement of its plans to maintain its oil and gas production levels until 2030. The BBC stated that Sawan had:

angered climate scientists who said Shell’s plan to continue current oil production until 2030 was wrong.

In response to these criticisms, the BBC article uncritically amplified Sawan’s view that:

What would be dangerous and irresponsible is cutting oil and gas production so that the cost of living, as we saw last year, starts to shoot up again.

Of course, the article failed to mention that oil and gas companies have been remorselessly profiteering during the “cost of living” crisis.

As the Canary reported, Shell raked in record profits of $42.3bn last year alone. The BBC itself broke the story in February with the headline Shell reports highest profits in 115 years.

Given this, campaigners and politicians have been highlighting the incongruity between these record corporate profits and long-marginalised communities in the UK facing starker energy poverty.

    A just transition for who?

Then, without a shred of irony, the BBC amplified Sawan’s appeals for a “just transition”.

Commenting on the “international bidding war for gas” in 2022, the outlet noted how:

poorer countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh unable to afford liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments that were instead diverted to Northern Europe.

The article then quoted Sawan feigning concern for citizens in Pakistan and Bangladesh by saying:

They took away LNG from those countries and children had to work and study by candlelight,

The BBC continued to uplift Sawan’s call for a just transition without challenge, quoting his argument that:

If we’re going to have a transition it needs to be a just transition that doesn’t just work for one part of the world.

As I have previously reported, it was, in fact, the fossil fuel corporations themselves that caused these mass blackouts in places like Pakistan and Bangladesh. Companies such as Italian oil and gas firm Eni purposely defaulted on their energy contracts when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent energy prices soaring. Capitalising on the opportunity, fossil fuel firms broke these contracts so that they could profit from the new demand from higher-paying customers in Europe.

    Fossil fuels drive climate chaos

Moreover, this isn’t even to mention fossil fuel companies’ role in driving the climate crisis which has already been causing extreme weather disasters in the Global South. Of course, the BBC allowed Sawan to invoke the blackouts in Pakistan, without even a cursory reference to the climate-exacerbated floods that have devastated those same communities.

Naturally, the BBC also facilitated Sawan’s barefaced ploy to shamelessly invoke marginalised children in these climate-vulnerable nations to bolster his own, unrelated argument for maintaining oil and gas production.

Moreover, fossil fuel companies like Shell have known about climate change for decades but have been engaged in a suite of unscrupulous tactics to delay the transition to greener technologies.

Again, another BBC article from September 2022 detailed a study which found that transitioning to renewable power could save the world $12tn in energy costs. Study author professor Doyne Farmer said that the research:

shows ambitious policies to accelerate dramatically the transition to a clean energy future as quickly as possible are, not only, urgently needed for climate reasons, but can save the world trillions in future energy costs, giving us a cleaner, cheaper and more energy secure future.

Climate bias not a thing of media past

The interview with Sawan showed that BBC bias over the climate crisis is very much alive and well. Journalist Amy Westervelt has extensively documented the corporate press’s weaponisation of ‘false equivalence’ for climate coverage.

‘False equivalence’ refers to the media practice of giving both sides of an argument equal weight. In climate terms, this has often meant platforming the views of deniers against the peer-reviewed research of climate scientists.

For example, a 2019 study in the journal Nature Communications found that American news outlets gave 49% more coverage to climate science deniers than to climate scientists.

Furthermore, back in 2014, even the parliamentary Science and Technology Select Committee criticised the BBC’s blatant bias in its coverage of the climate crisis. It stated that:

BBC News teams continue to make mistakes in their coverage of climate science by giving opinions and scientific fact the same weight.

Nearly a decade later, little has changed. At a time when climate experts have announced the global hottest day ever recorded, and the UN human rights chief declared that the climate crisis threatens a “truly terrifying” future, of course the BBC would shill for the fossil fuel industry.
