  • Edinburgh Came Out Against Court’s Roll-Back Of Trans Women’s Rights

    On Saturday 19 April, around 2,000 protesters turned out in Edinburgh against the UK Supreme Court’s roll-back of transgender women’s rights.

    Members of the public marched from the foot of The Mound to the UK government building to rail against the disgraceful far-right-fueled ruling. Together, gender queer communities and allies galvanised a highly energised crowd against the Supreme Court ruling. Throughout, the rhetoric was one of encouraging solidarity within the trans community, rather than begging the government for help. This included a call to autonomously establish sources of “Food, Housing, Medicine and Trans Joy”.

    “In all my days here, this is the biggest black eye that Pittsylvania County has experienced,” says Amanda Sink Wydner, leader of the local opposition to plans for a massive new power plant and data center complex in Chatham, a small town in southern Virginia.

    On April 15, the county government will vote on whether to rezone hundreds acres of farmland to heavy industrial use, which would allow Balico LLC, a natural gas power developer, to proceed with the project. As planned, it would have the biggest power demand of any data center complex in the world, according to rankings from Data Center Magazine.

  • UK Activists Challenging Return Of US Nuclear Weapons With Encampment

    In anticipation of U.S. nuclear weapons returning to U.K. soil after their removal 18 years ago, activists from around the world are gathering at the Lakenheath Peace Camp from April 14-25, 2025 with a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week vigil at the main entrance of RAF Lakenheath.

    Organized by Lakenheath Alliance for Peace and a coalition of many groups, the 11 day encampment with specific events each day will culminate in a peace conference on April 24, 2025 and a blockade of the air base on April 25, 2025.

    The peace conference is titled “Analysing and Resisting US Nuclear Expansion” and will feature well-known speakers who will focus on topics from global militarism to the arms trade, with a detailed focus on the dangers of nuclear weapons.

On April 17, 1825, King Charles X signed an ordinance forcing the nascent republic to pay 150 million gold francs – equivalent to about USD 21 billion today – plunging the country into a cycle of poverty, dependence, and violence that continues to this day.

    After Columbia University fully capitulated to the Trump administration’s demands of disciplinary measures against pro-Palestine students and censorship against academic departments, the Trump administration set its sights on other institutions of higher education, one of these being Harvard University. On April 11, Trump officials sent Harvard a similar demand letter to the one Columbia received on March 13. But Harvard’s response to Trump’s demands has been markedly different to Columbia’s – on April 14, Harvard’s President Alan M. Garber issued a bold response: Harvard would “not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights.”

  • Shut Down BP: It Is Complicit In Israel’s Genocide In Gaza

    Members of Fossil Free London, Energy Embargo for Palestine and the Free West Papua Campaign gathered outside BP’s London HQ in St James’s Square last night ahead of BP’s AGM, taking place today. Campaigners held a banner reading ‘stop fuelling genocide and climate breakdown’, and chanting ‘Shut down BP’.
    Since the wake of Israel’s genocide on Gaza, BP has come under fire for its supply of energy supplies to Israel. In September 2024, Energy Embargo for Palestine identified in a research report that 30% of Israel’s total energy supplies passes through the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, which has gone on to fuel military operations in Gaza.

  • Tallahassee Demands Release Of US Citizen Illegally Detained By ICE

    Tallahassee, FL – On Thursday, April 16, about 75 community members rallied at the Leon County Jail to demand the immediate release of Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, a U.S. citizen illegally detained by ICE. The emergency mobilization was called by the Tallahassee Immigrant Rights Alliance (TIRA).

    Lopez-Gomez, who lives in Georgia and works in Tallahassee, was detained by Florida Highway Patrol during a traffic stop after crossing state lines Wednesday morning. Despite presenting his U.S. birth certificate to the court, ICE formally requested that Lopez-Gomez be held in jail for pickup and processing, superseding Leon County Judge LaShawn Riggans’s assessment that the birth certificate was in fact legitimate.

  • How 77 Tons Of Radioactive Waste Ended Up In Brooklyn

    New York City’s second largest utility is being sued in federal court for the alleged inappropriate handling of at least 77 tons of radioactive waste at a 120-acre site located in Brooklyn, the city’s most populous borough.

    The radioactive waste, as well as other hazardous coal waste, is a leftover of a bygone era, more than a century ago, when the parcel was the location of Equity Works, a manufactured gas plant (MGP) that derived gas from heating coal, and then piped it across the city to power lighting, cooking, and heating.

    Cooper Tank & Welding, which purchased the site from London-based National Grid in 1987, is seeking “no less than $2,000,000” in damages, charging in its lawsuit that the multinational electric and gas utility’s “negligent operating and waste management practices resulted in contamination” from “concentrated radioactive materials,” as well as “coal tar and other hazardous substances.”

  • Moroccan Dockworkers Call Boycott Of Maersk’s Arms Shipment To Israel

    Morocco’s Port Workers’ Union, affiliated with the Moroccan Labor Union, has called on workers, users, and operative companies at the port of Casablanca to boycott the Nexoe Maersk ship, which will arrive to the port on Friday, April 18, due to its planned shipment of military equipment to Israel between April 20 and 22. The union made the call in order to protest Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.

    The union urged dockworkers to abstain from unloading or servicing operations for the ship, warning that facilitating its passage would make all involved “direct accomplices in the genocidal war against the Palestinian people.”

    Petro justified his stance by citing irregularities highlighted by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the state of emergency decreed by the then-president and reelection-aspiring candidate, Daniel Noboa, in seven provinces of the country—where more than half of the electoral roll is concentrated, with leftist orientation—hours before the vote.

  • Jobs Back: Alamo Drafthouse Workers Force Sony To Reverse Layoffs

    After nearly two months on strike, workers at Alamo Drafthouse, a dine-in cinema chain, have forced Sony to reverse course on its mass firings. Last Sunday, Alamo United members overwhelmingly ratified a tentative agreement that restores every illegally laid off worker to their job, reinstates stolen paid time off and sick leave, and honors each worker’s original hire date and seniority. The strike officially ends this Friday.

    Alamo Drafthouse, which was acquired by Sony in June 2024, started the year by trying to push through mass layoffs at multiple locations. At its non-unionized locations like its Slaughter Lane venue in Austin, the company laid off 25 percent of its hourly staff in January.

  • Protesters Denounce ICE ‘Abduction’ Of Mohsen Mahdawi

    On April 14, Palestinian Columbia University student and leading pro-Palestine activist Mohsen Mahdawi was detained by immigration agents as he attended an interview as part of his application for US citizenship in Colchester, Vermont.

    Mahdawi is the second Palestinian Columbia University student activist to be kidnapped by immigration authorities, after Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest which has earned international attention as demands for his release grow.

    With Mahdawi’s detention, pro-Palestine groups have renewed calls to end Trump’s attacks on students and free speech.

  • Two Palestine Action Activists Occupy The Roof Of An Arms Factory

    Two people have been arrested after occupying the roof of GRiD Defence Systems, Elbit’s military hardware supplier, on Wednesday 16 April. The activists were, of course, from Palestine Action – and the protest was over the company’s complicity with Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.

    This morning, two activists from Palestine Action successfully evaded security, to occupy the roof of ‘GRiD Defence Systems’ at Holtspur Lane, High Wycombe.

    The military hardware firm is a key supplier to Elbit Systems, Israel’s biggest weapons maker, manufacturing a range of military computers and processors, as well as other military electronics.

  • Maldives Bans Entry Of Israeli Tourists ‘In Solidarity’ With Palestine

    The Maldives announced on 15 April an immediate ban on the entry of Israelis into the island nation in response to Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

    President Mohamed Muizzu ratified the legislation on Tuesday after it was approved by parliament.

    “The ratification reflects the government’s firm stance in response to the continuing atrocities and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people,” the president’s office said in a statement.

    “The Maldives reaffirms its resolute solidarity with the Palestinian cause.”

    The Maldives, a small Islamic republic of 1,192 strategically located coral islets in the Indian Ocean, is a popular luxury tourist destination known for its beaches.

  • Appalled At Funding Genocide, US Taxpayers Turn To The UN For Redress

    Taxpayers Against Genocide (TAG), a nongovernmental grassroots mass movement comprised of more than 2,000 taxpayers who have been protesting their congressional representatives’ votes to fund Israel’s genocide in Gaza, filed an unprecedented report with the UN Human Rights Council on April 7.

    “We have gone through all the channels open to us in our effort to stop U.S. officials from using our tax dollars to fund genocide. We have called and met with these officials, we have peacefully protested, and we have taken them to federal court. To date, none of this has stopped them,” Seth Donnelly, lead taxpayer plaintiff in the federal lawsuit, told Truthout.

  • Trump Just Escalated His War On Coal Miners

    President Donald Trump unveiled a new barrage of executive orders last week aimed at revitalizing the nation’s ​“beautiful clean coal” industry. But in reality, it’s already clear that his empty words will do no such thing.

    Flanked by burly white men outfitted in coal miners’ garb, the former reality TV star and failed real estate tycoon rhapsodized about his muddled plans to supercharge coal’s use and production, including scrapping environmental regulations that ​“undermine” its production and ensuring federal policy doesn’t ​“discriminate” against the fossil fuel industry.

    The astonishing impracticality of this plan did not appear in any way to be a factor in Trump’s decision, which was still applauded by people who should know better

  • Philadelphia Protest Against Transit System’s Proposed Draconian Cuts

    Philadelphia, PA – Philadelphia’s transit system, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA), released a budget on April 10 that includes draconian cuts in services, increased fares and reduced hours of operation. Claiming a $213 million deficit, the budget due to take effect July 1 would impose a 45% service cut, a 21.5% fare increase and layoffs of transit workers.

    Under the proposed plan, some service cuts would go into effect on Sept. 1, along with the fare increase. Between Aug. 24, 2025, and Jan. 1, 2026, fifty bus routes would be shut down and 16 others shortened. On Jan. 1, 2026, five Regional Rail lines between neighboring suburbs and the city would be eliminated and a 9 p.m. rail curfew would go into effect.

    San Jose, CA – On April 9, around 60 San Jose State students and community members gathered by the campus’s Cesar Chavez arch to protest the recent revocation of student visas by the federal government. According to San Jose State University president Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, 12 San Jose State University International students had their F-1 visas revoked. The revocations came as part of a wave of visa revocations by the federal government, most of which are student visas.

    As soon as the news broke, the San Jose chapter of Students for a Democratic Society called an emergency action to put forward several demands.

  • Palestine Action Sh*t – Quite Literally – On Elbit’s Drone Operations

    In a co-ordinated pair of actions striking at the operations in Britain of Israel’s largest weapons company, Palestine Action have shut down operations at Elbit Systems’ Leicester drone factory and are occupying Elbit’s Bristol insurers.Returning to the Leicester site once again after years of occupations, blockades, and disruption, two activists have today delivered a truckload of manure and scrap furniture to the factory gates and secured themselves inside the vehicle.

    The pile of excrement and ongoing obstruction is serving to blockade the site, halting operations as all access is prevented.

    The ‘UAV Tactical Systems’ (U-TacS) plant, which is a major exporter of military drones to Israel, has thus been forced shut.

    Today Ecuadorians were called to the polls for the runoff elections, which pitted leftist candidate Luisa Gonzalez against incumbent President and Trump-supported Daniel Noboa. The election day was marked by a series of setbacks, including complaints of irregularities, violations of democracy and the activation of a new state of emergency which allowed the most extreme militarization the country has ever experienced. In addition, the arrival of international observers was prohibited, which generated even more doubts about the transparency of the process.

    On Thursday, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), Argentina’s largest labor union federation, called for a 24-hour general strike to protest President Javier Milei’s austerity policies.

    The strike, supported by the Argentinian Workers’ Central Union (CTA) and 50 nationally significant unions, demands better wage conditions in response to the ongoing economic crisis.
