  • New York, June 17, 2024—As a Russian court on Monday set the beginning of the trial of U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich for June 26, the Committee to Protect Journalists renewed its call to immediately release him and drop all charges against him.

“The start of Gershkovich’s trial comes after he has already spent more than 14 months behind bars for no other reason than his work as a journalist,” said Gulnoza Said, CPJ’s Europe and Central Asia program coordinator. “Russian authorities must immediately release Gershkovich, drop all charges against him, and stop prosecuting members of the press for their work.”

The investigation department of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) accused Gershkovich, a reporter with The Wall Street Journal, of acting on assignment for the CIA and collecting “secret information” on a Russian tank factory in the Sverdlovsk region, where he was arrested on espionage charges on March 29, 2023, according to a press release by the Sverdlovsk Regional Court, where Gershkovich’s trial will start behind closed doors on June 26.

It is not known how long Gershkovich’s trial will last, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Gershkovich, whose detention has been extended five times since his arrest, faces up to 20 years in prison, according to the Russian criminal code. He is the first American journalist to face such accusations by Russia since the end of the Cold War. Gershkovich, The Wall Street Journal, and the U.S. government have all denied the espionage allegations.

On June 13, the Russian prosecutor general’s office announced that Gershkovich’s indictment had been finalized and that the case against him was sent to court.

“Evan Gershkovich is facing a false and baseless charge. Russia’s latest move toward a sham trial is, while expected, deeply disappointing and still no less outrageous,” said Almar Latour, CEO of Dow Jones and publisher of The Wall Street Journal, and Emma Tucker, editor in chief of the publication, in a statement on June 13.

On April 11, 2023, the U.S. State Department designated Gershkovich as “wrongfully detained,” which unlocked a broad government effort to free him.

Russia was the world’s fourth-worst jailer of journalists, with at least 22 behind bars, including Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva, a U.S.-Russian journalist, when CPJ conducted its most recent annual prison census on December 1, 2023.

CPJ emailed the Sverdlovsk Regional Court and the Russian prosecutor general’s office but did not immediately receive any response.

  • A video of a young man wearing what appears to be a military uniform has been widely shared in Chinese-language social media posts that claim it shows a Taiwanese youth serving in China’s People’s Liberation Army, or the PLA.

But the claim is false. The young man in the video is a member of a color guard unit at a Chinese university, not the PLA.

The claim was shared on the Weibo Chinese social media platform on May 26, 2024.

“A young man from Taiwan is a soldier on the mainland!” reads the post in part.

“Mainland” is a term often used to refer to China among Chinese speakers.

The claim was shared alongside a 31-second video that shows a young man wearing what appears to be a PLA camouflage uniform at training exercises.

The young man can be heard saying that he has a Taiwanese mother and a Chinese father and that he is from Taipei.

But the claim is false. The young man in the video is a member of a color guard unit at a Chinese university, not the PLA.

    University color guard

A reverse image search using screenshots from the video found the same video published on the Chinese news and video sharing site Sohu.

“On May 26, in Tianjin, retired military personnel met a student from Taiwan while training for a color guard unit at Nankai University,” the title of the Sohu video reads in part. The university is in the Chinese city of Tianjin.

A closer look at the video revealed that the armband of a young Taiwanese man matched that of the Nankai University color guard unit.

The color guard at Chinese universities is a “quasi-military student organization” with the job of conducting the daily flag raising and lowering ceremonies, as well as doing so on various holidays and commemorations.

It is not affiliated with the PLA.

Joseph Wen, a part-time researcher at the Taiwan Institute of Strategic Modeling who created an interactive map detailing the PLA military facilities and bases across China, said the young man in the video was wearing the PLA’s outdated Type 07 camouflage, but that the PLA now  uses Type 21 camouflage for its uniforms.

A closer look at a screenshot of the video shared in false posts.

Wen also pointed out that the man standing in front of the young man is not wearing any symbols of rank, indicating that he has retired from the military.

Biden talks about peace and humanitarian aid and a two-state solution, but his deeds are to send endless supplies of weapons of mass destruction—including weapons that are used in sheer, total violation of the Geneva Conventions and international law…He appears weak to more and more Americans, and he may well pay that price on November 5th to the horror of a Trump presidency. This is how far he goes in his obeisance to the right wing, violent, genocidal political coalition that has hijacked the Israeli society.

In Case You Haven’t Heard with Francesco DeSantis

    News 6/12/24

    1. The New York Times reports that since last year, Israel has been running an “influence campaign” targeting Black lawmakers in the United States. This project, overseen by Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, consists of a crude network of fake social media accounts that post “pro-Israel comments…urging [Black Democrats like Senator Raphael Warnock, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Representative Ritchie Torres] to continue funding Israel’s military.” This project was active on Meta platforms Facebook and Instagram, and utilized OpenAI’s ChatGPT, until both companies disrupted the operation earlier this year. The operation is still active on X, formerly Twitter.

    2. Mondoweiss reports that Israel has been torturing Palestinian prisoners, aided by the complicity of Israeli physicians. According to the report, “prisoners are being viciously beaten and abused multiple times a day, caged in cells ‘not fit for human life,’ kept blindfolded with their hands bound with plastic ties, isolated from the outside world, stripped of their clothing, collectively punished through starvation, attacked by dogs, sexually assaulted, and psychologically tortured.” As for the doctors, “Israeli physicians collaborate with Shin Bet interrogators [Israel’s equivalent of the FBI] to ‘certify’… that [prisoners]… are ‘fit’ to undergo torture. Throughout the duration of interrogation, a physician provides a ‘green light’ that torture can continue…look for physical and psychological weaknesses to exploit…[and] falsify or refrain from documenting the physical and psychological effects of torture on a detainee’s body and mind.” Meanwhile, for all the talk of Hamas brutality, Israeli news anchor Lama Tatour was fired for commenting that recently released hostage Noa Argamani looked remarkably healthy, saying “Look at her eyebrows, they look better than mine??” per Business Insider.

    3. The United Nations Security Council has, for the first time, overwhelmingly passed a Gaza ceasefire resolution, backed by the United States. Reuters reports “senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri…said [Hamas has] accepted the ceasefire resolution and [is] ready to negotiate over the specifics.” Yet, according to CNN, “Israel has vowed to persist with its military operation in Gaza, saying it won’t engage in ‘meaningless’ negotiations with Hamas.” As the CNN piece notes, “The resolution says Israel has accepted the plan, and US officials have repeatedly emphasized Israel had agreed to the proposal – despite other public comments from Netanyahu that suggest otherwise.” If the Israelis ultimately do not accept this ceasefire proposal, this would become yet another major embarrassment for the Biden administration.

    4. POLITICO reports “AIPAC [is] the biggest source of Republican money flowing into competitive Democratic primaries this year…spending millions to boost moderates over progressives who have been critical of Israel.” This piece quotes Eric Levine, a board member of the Republican Jewish Coalition who has donated to Rep. Ritchie Torres as saying “Under the William F. Buckley rule of politics, I want to support the most conservative person who can win.” On the other hand, Beth Miller – political director at Jewish Voice for Peace Action – sees this as the lobby showing its true colors, telling the paper “AIPAC can’t actually claim that they represent Democrats and Republicans in the same way. That veneer of bipartisanship is gone.”

    5. The NAACP, among the leading African-American Civil Rights group in the country, has called on the Biden administration to “Stop Shipments of Weapons Targeting Civilians to Israel [and] Push for Ceasefire.” In a statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson wrote “The current state of Gaza and the latest bombing of Rafah complicates an already dire humanitarian crisis.  Relief workers have also been killed while attempting to administer aid and support to the people of Gaza. The NAACP strongly condemns these actions and calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.” Data from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace shows 68% of Black Americans favor an “immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza” and 59% believe “U.S. military aid to Israel should be conditioned to ensure that Israel uses American weapons for legitimate self-defense and in a way that is consistent with human rights standards.”

    6. Yet the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza has not stopped censorship of pro-Palestine speech in the U.S. Democracy Now! reports outspoken progressive commentator and former Bernie Sanders presidential campaign press secretary Briahna Joy Gray has been fired from the Hill’s morning show, Rising, for supposedly rolling her eyes during an interview with an Israeli guest. As Democracy Now! notes, “Last year, The Hill also fired the political commentator Katie Halper after she called Israel an apartheid state.”

    7. Even more outrageous, the University of Minnesota is “pausing its search for director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies — days after it offered the job to Israeli historian Raz Segal,” per the Star Tribune. As this article lays out, “Segal is…[a] professor of Holocaust and genocide studies …at Stockton University in New Jersey,” and a Jewish Israeli. Yet the offer was rescinded for “Among other things…[publishing] an article called ‘A Textbook Case of Genocide,’ which he published in [the Left-wing Jewish publication] Jewish Currents.” That’s right, apparently even being a Jewish Israeli professor of Holocaust and genocide studies is not enough to protect you from charges of antisemitism.

    8. A new article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, authored by Doctors Adam Gaffney, Steffie Woolhandler, and David Himmelstein analyzes “The Medicare Advantage Paradox.” This piece argues Medicare Advantage delivers less care to patients at a higher cost. As the authors put it, “[as] enrollment in…private [Medicare Advantage] plans surpassed 30 million…the health insurance industry’s trade group proclaimed [Medicare Advantage] ‘a good deal for members and taxpayers.’…The first part of that claim is debatable, while the second part is false. Medicare Payment Advisory Commission…the nonpartisan agency reporting to Congress, recently estimated that [Medicare Advantage] overpayments added $82 billion to taxpayers’ costs for Medicare in 2023 and $612 billion between 2007 and 2024.”

    9. In Britain, the Labour Party has been conducting a purge of its Left flank under the leadership of its cowardly centrist leader Keir Starmer. Included in that purge is former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Corbyn has represented the working class district of Islington North for over 40 years. Yet, as the Guardian explains, “[Corbyn] was blocked from standing again for Labour…[and] has been expelled from the Labour party.” The Guardian report continues “Last year, 98% of attenders at a local party monthly general meeting backed a motion thanking Corbyn for his ‘commitment and service to the people’, adding it was members’ ‘democratic right to select our MP’.” Ousted from the Labour Party, Corbyn now intends to stand for the seat as an independent MP. Writing in the district’s local paper, Corbyn stated, “When I was first elected, I made a promise to stand by my constituents no matter what … In Islington North, we keep our promises.”

    10. Finally, CNN reports Chiquita Brands International  – formerly the United Fruit Company – has been found “liable for financing the Colombian paramilitary group Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia,” by a Florida jury. The AUC was a “far-right paramilitary group that was designated a terrorist organization by the US.” Chiquita has been ordered to pay $38.3 million to the families of eight victims. CNN adds, “In 2007, Chiquita pleaded guilty to making over 100 payments to the AUC totaling over $1.7 million despite the group being designated a terrorist organization…The company agreed to pay the US government a $25 million fine.”

These “useful idiots” are bought off by powerful forces to divide and conquer the Left. The oligarchs we’re up against want the Left to fight each other rather than join together to build political power–the only way to ensure a livable future. It’s a divide and conquer strategy that, unfortunately, works.

There is no substitute for political power, or else our enemies wouldn’t work so hard to suppress the vote and mindhack people into voting against their interests or not voting at all. Every resistance movement and revolution that succeeded did so thanks to coalition building, not from ripping each other apart.

  • Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz, an influential Jewish social activist, educator and author of books on Jewish ethics, has spoken out on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border and Afghan refugees.

Now the rabbi has taken up the cause of the cultural genocide of the nearly 12 million predominantly Muslim Uyghurs in China’s far-western Xinjiang region, whose religion, language and customs are being wiped out by Beijing.

Yanklowitz, 42, has written recent opinion pieces in religious journals about the mass detention of an estimated 1.8 million Uyghurs in “re-education” camps where some faced torture, sexual assaults and forced female sterilization. He says the measure is the “largest mass-internment of an ethnic-religious minority since the Holocaust.”

Yanklowitz says he was inspired in part by the late Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who fought against hate, persecution and injustice.

RFA Uyghur reporter Kurban Niyaz asked Yanklowitz about his call for action. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

RFA: Why are you focusing on the Uyghur issue now, and why is it important?

Shmuly Yanklowitz: First, I am inspired by my faith, my religion that says we cannot stand by when people — innocent people — are being oppressed.

Second, I am inspired by the Holocaust memory and understanding with people in my family just how traumatic and how painful this reality is.

Third, as a student of Professor Elie Wiesel, I feel much moved by his commitment to use his global influence to never be silent.

Last, this is the most important issue right now, because the CCP [Chinese Communist Party] is growing in its power and influence. This is the worst genocide which somehow has the least awareness of it. So, I feel compelled to raise that awareness at a crucial time like this.

There are people who have nowhere to go. They are not safe in their native country, and they are fleeing, and they’re not safe to where they’re fleeing also. These are some of the most vulnerable people on the planet — people who are crossing the U.S.-Mexico border [and] people who are fleeing war or genocide.

That’s where I see my biggest moral priority — to get people showers and clothes and food and travel when possible, [no matter] whether the person is Muslim or Christian or atheist. I want to be there to support them. I don’t always know someone’s background because of the language barrier. Whoever is there, we support.

RFA: Why did the historical notion of “never again” fail when it comes to the genocide of Uyghurs in Xinjiang?

Yanklowitz: Great question. I think that we see so much apathy on this Uyghur genocide issue where people are either ignorant about it, they’ve never even heard of Uyghur people, or they’ve heard about it but don’t really care. Or they’re afraid of China, or they are too connected to all the things they buy, which we know are linked to forced labor, and for so many reasons.

It seems we’re not getting movement and traction on this issue. And yet, people say “never again.” The other part is that people are used to talking about genocide where they see mass killings. And here, of course, not only can people not see it because of the crackdown and [lack of] transparency, but also because it’s not mass killings.

Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz shakes hands with US President Joe Biden in an undated photo. (RFA screenshot of Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz's website)
Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz shakes hands with US President Joe Biden in an undated photo. (RFA screenshot of Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz’s website)

It’s a different type of genocide which attempts to wipe out the Uyghur culture and people, but in a very different form from [that of] the Holocaust. So, people are not understanding how serious this is, and people feel powerless to address something like this. But we must say “never again.” We must never stop saying “never again” and build a movement where we can really stop this.

RFA: Several international companies assisted the Nazis in their persecution of the Jewish people, and a similar trend has appeared nowadays, for example, with companies who sell products made with Uyghur forced labor. Is this a sign of  history repeating itself?

Yanklowitz: There are real similarities and real differences. The similarities are that, there is just total cruelty, total dehumanization, total lack of moral responsibility, and an attempt to gain power. The Nazis wanted to take over the world. The CCP wants to be the global leader.

And yet, the differences are also so real in today’s realities and with all the new technology and the tools and the transnational repression. So, I do think that history does repeat itself, where we say we’re never going to allow these things again, and  then we see it once again. We have power. And in America, there’s American government power. There’s American corporate power. And we can do something about this. If there’s a desire, we can wake up the world.

RFA: What’s your message for Uyghurs who have ended up in Chinese concentration camps and prisons?

Yanklowitz: My first message is that you are not alone. We see you, and we hear your cries.

My second message is that we will prevail. We don’t know how long it will take, but we will prevail in bringing them their dignity and freedom.

My third message is that we are ready to receive you. Whenever you get free, it’s not just about being free from there. It’s about not losing the Uyghur culture in the diaspora, and that we want to support that Uyghurs in the diaspora because there’s also assimilation of children of Uyghur families. It can be hard to maintain the culture without infrastructure and support.

So, we want to help offer tools because the Jewish people lived in the diaspora for 2,000 years and survived. And we want to share wisdom together around how once the Uyghurs are free from that region, or hopefully, they will have total autonomy there, but if they have to leave to get freedom, then we want to share with someone how to survive culturally.

RFA: How can Uyghurs in the diaspora preserve their identity, language and culture?

Yanklowitz: One of the areas we’ve been talking about, one of the secrets in American Jewish life right now, is summer camp. The kids go to camp, and they live in their culture.

We think that some kind of program, like for Uyghurs in the diaspora to be a part of a camp, like a Jewish camp where they have their own Uyghur groups, that they can support their culture and the Uyghur children can celebrate Uyghur culture, learn the music and the language and the songs and the dance and the food, and that they can be proud.

That it’s not just to be sad about the current crisis, but also to be proud of the culture.

  • The Global North or the West is a group of countries led by the United States. In juxtaposition is the Global South, once called the Third World. In recent years, the Global North has undergone a significant economic and political decline. The geopolitical landscape is shifting thus opening new possibilities for Global South countries, particularly for China. A dramatic example of America’s isolation was the UN vote on Palestinian membership. The vote was 143 in favor, 25 abstentions and 9 against. Joining the U.S. no vote were such powerhouses as Nauru, Micronesia, and Palau. Increasingly, the U.S. position in the world is weakening. Its double standards, one set of rules for the master and his servants and another set for everyone else, has not won Washington many friends in the Global South. Recorded at Connolly Books.

  • Seg3 bamya gaza 2

Israel and Hamas are both facing calls to support the U.S.-backed ceasefire and hostage deal that was endorsed by the U.N. Security Council earlier this week. While Hamas has welcomed the proposal, Israeli leaders have yet to publicly commit to its terms, including a full end to the war rather than just a pause in the fighting for the exchange of captives. This comes as a major new U.N. report accuses Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout its eight-month assault on the territory. Meanwhile, the death toll in Gaza has now passed 37,000, including more than 15,000 children. “This is inhumane and catastrophic,” says senior Palestinian diplomat Majed Bamya, who says “2.3 million Palestinians, every single day, are fighting to survive” while the ceasefire proposal languishes. He also stresses that peace in the region is only possible by “ending the occupation and allowing two states to live side by side.”
