This is amid fears that the hair-trigger situation could turn into a war.<\/p>\n<p>On 7 April, UK defence secretary Ben Wallace chaired a meeting of NATO&#8217;s &#8220;QUINT&#8221; allies &#8211; the nations who support Ukraine. The plans, first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2021\/01\/ukrainian-navy-commander-confirms-future-procurements-including-ada-class-corvettes\/\">agreed<\/a> in a UK-Ukraine Memorandum of Intent in October 2020, have begun to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/1419851\/ukraine-border-russia-uk-warship-nato-defence-war-crimea-crisis-dombass-navy-black-sea-spt\">reported<\/a> again as the stand-off has intensified recently.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, the UK will produce two fast-attack ships and a further six will be built by Ukraine. The US will also contribute vessels to this new naval build-up.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the UK military attach\u00e9 to Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/1419851\/ukraine-border-russia-uk-warship-nato-defence-war-crimea-crisis-dombass-navy-black-sea-spt\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This fleet will provide a ban on access to the sea. In other words, it will deter and provide defence against the Black Sea fleet of the Russian Federation, preventing violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5>Troops<\/h5>\n<p>In recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2015\/feb\/24\/britain-to-send-military-advisers-to-ukraine-cameron\">UK military advisors<\/a> have spent time in the country training Ukrainian troops in infantry skills and intelligence gathering. <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">In 2020, the UK&#8217;s rapid-reaction 16 Air Assault Brigade <\/span><a style=\"font-size: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/hundreds-of-uk-troops-parachute-into-ukraine-for-joint-exercises\">carried out<\/a><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> parachute drops in Ukraine as part of a training exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For its part, Russia has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ukraine-crisis-kremlin\/kremlin-says-russia-to-keep-troops-near-ukraine-border-for-as-long-as-it-sees-fit-idUSKBN2BU1GW\">pledged<\/a> that its troops will stay where they are and that &#8220;concrete&#8221; measures will be taken if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>A Kremlin spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ukraine-crisis-kremlin\/kremlin-says-russia-to-keep-troops-near-ukraine-border-for-as-long-as-it-sees-fit-idUSKBN2BU1GW\">told<\/a> <em>Reuters<\/em> on 7 April:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Russia\u2019s armed forces are on Russian territory in the places it considers necessary and appropriate, and they will stay there for as long as our military leadership and supreme commander consider it appropriate<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tensions in the region escalated in 2014.
