Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minnesota) deployed the National Guard to the area. Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott placed a curfew on the city until 6 am Monday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Police have pushed large swath of  crowd back across the street, into residential area with tear gas, flash bangs and rubber bullets. This came moments after a few people threw things at police line and organizers yelled at them to stop. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/w0bK4Or9iN\">pic.twitter.com\/w0bK4Or9iN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Liz Sawyer (@ByLizSawyer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByLizSawyer\/status\/1381443397123252228?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police reportedly pulled Wright over just before 2 pm Central Time on Sunday in Brooklyn Center. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisHrapsky\/status\/1381409978565677070\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright&#8217;s mother told reporters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that her son had called her to get information about the vehicle&#8217;s insurance, as his family gave the car to Wright <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mpamer\/status\/1381455497698537473\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just two weeks prior<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright&#8217;s mother said her son was pulled over for having air fresheners on his rearview mirror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police allege Wright tried to reenter his vehicle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/547629-protests-erupt-after-black-man-shot-by-police-in-minnesota\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after being confronted over an outstanding warrant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The officer then shot Wright, who drove several blocks before crashing into another vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crookstontimes.com\/news\/20181231\/minnesota-state-patrol-ask-trooper8200whats-law-regarding-hanging-objects-from-your-rear-view-mirror\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is technically against state law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hang objects from the mirror of a moving car, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/crowd-protests-officer-minneapolis-shoots-motorist-rcna651\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Minnesota branch of the American Civil Liberties Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expressed &#8220;deep concerns that police here appear to have used dangling air fresheners as an excuse for making a pretextual stop, something police do all too often to target Black people.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During a press conference on Monday, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atrupar\/status\/1381660471095361537\">alleged that the police-perpetrated killing was accidental<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As I watch the video and listen to the officer&#8217;s commands, it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet,&#8221; Gannon said. &#8220;This appears to me, from what I viewed and the officer&#8217;s reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge, that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many on social media did not accept that rationale as acceptable. Ben Passer, lead director of Energy Access and Equity at the Minnesota-based clean energy nonprofit Fresh Energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenPasser\/status\/1381659196282703874\">opined on the matter<\/a>, saying that Wright&#8217;s killing being an accident &#8220;doesn&#8217;t make it any better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The power to end a life shouldn\u2019t rest in the hands of a single officer\u2019s careless decision.
