Murrow ended with these words: \u201cThe actions of the junior Senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad and given considerable comfort to our enemies. And whose fault is that? Not really his. He didn\u2019t create this situation of fear; he merely exploited it \u2013 and rather successfully.\u201d My father woke me that evening\u2014I was 12\u2014to tell me about Murrow\u2019s blast and to predict McCarthy\u2019s downfall. He would indeed be censored by his colleagues in the US Senate, but \u201cMcCarthyism\u201d and anti-communism survived and even thrived all through the 1960s.
