It\u2019s a word that we\u2019ve heard a lot lately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">With the recent outbreak of conflict between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaza%E2%80%93Israel_conflict\"><strong>Israel and Hamas in Gaza<\/strong><\/a>, the ongoing conflict in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russo-Ukrainian_War\"><strong>Ukraine and Russia<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nagorno-Karabakh_conflict\"><strong>Nagorno-Karabagh<\/strong><\/a> conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, along with the continued conflict in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syrian_civil_war\"><strong>Syria<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yemeni_civil_war_(2014%E2%80%93present)\"><strong>Yemen<\/strong><\/a>, it\u2019s clear that peace \u2013 or the lack of \u2013 is a global issue on many people\u2019s minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">According to research by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsandpeace.org\/\"><strong>Institute for Economics &amp; Peace (IEP)<\/strong><\/a>, the global picture is not looking good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In their latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsandpeace.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/GPI-2023-Web.pdf\"><strong>global peace report<\/strong><\/a> (2023) \u2013 in which they provide a review of 163 countries \u2013 we saw the \u201c<strong>ninth consecutive year that global peacefulness has deteriorated<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Over the last year, peace decreased by an average of 0.42% per country, with 84 countries marked as more peaceful than in 2022, and 79 countries recording a deterioration of peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-attachment-id=\"25815\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.com\/2023\/11\/28\/promoting-positive-peace-5-ways-we-can-fight-the-global-decline-in-peace\/map\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png\" data-orig-size=\"1275,654\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"map\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png?w=300\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png?w=525\" width=\"1024\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25815\" style=\"width:674px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png?w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png?w=150 150w, https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png?w=300 300w, https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png?w=768 768w, https:\/\/voiceofsalam.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/map.png 1275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The global peace index (2023) (Source: Institute of Economics and Peace, 2023).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">So, what lies behind the statistics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Well, improvements and deteriorations were driven by changes a range of overlapping factors, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Conflict:<\/strong> the prevalence of internal and external conflict, along with the number of related deaths<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Politics:<\/strong> the rate of military expenditure (% of GDP), political instability and relations with neighbouring countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Displacement:<\/strong> the number of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Terrorism:<\/strong> current ranking on the political terror scale and the impact of terrorism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weapons:<\/strong> the number of weapons imported and exported<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crime:<\/strong> the homicide rate and levels of violent crime and access to small arms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In this research, <strong>Iceland<\/strong> remained the most peaceful nation (a ranking held since 2008), followed by Denmark and Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Likewise, <strong>Afghanistan<\/strong> remained the \u201cleast peaceful nation\u201d for the eighth year in a row, followed by Yemen and Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">These are countries that have found themselves in both groupings repeatedly. And with the outbreak of conflict, it\u2019s no surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">According to IEP, there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsandpeace.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/GTI-2023-web-170423.pdf\"><strong>no changes in the level of global terrorism<\/strong><\/a> in the last three years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Whilst terrorism-related deaths in the MENA region continue to decline (down by 23% in 2023), the largest increase of deaths has been in <strong>sub-Saharan Africa<\/strong>, with a rise of 8%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In fact, the Sahel region of Africa has become the \u201cepicentre of terrorism\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In this region, <strong>43% of deaths related to global terrorism occur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Moreover, we\u2019re also seeing the rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsandpeace.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/ETR-2023-web-261023.pdf\"><strong>ecological threats<\/strong><\/a> and the cyclical relationship to violence, including terrorism and conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Whilst populations are increasing, alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antislavery.org\/what-we-do\/climate-change\/\"><strong>climate-related disasters and the displacement<\/strong><\/a> of people, natural resources are decreasing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This is and will continue to have a monumental impact on populations, and the level of conflict:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">\u201c\u2026without concerted international action, current levels of ecological degradation will substantially worsen, thereby intensifying a range of social issues, such as malnutrition and forced migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Current conflicts will escalate and multiply as a result, creating further global insecurity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">IEP estimates that by 2050, 2.8 billion people will reside in countries facing severe ecological threats, compared to 1.8 billion in 2023, with 1.1 billion of these people living in countries with low societal resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>IEP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsandpeace.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/ETR-2023-web-261023.pdf\"><strong><em>Ecological Threat Report<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2023)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As communities are becoming increasingly displaced and lacking in critical resources, <strong>conflict and instability will inevitability increase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The reality is this: if we want peace, we need to focus on more than ending conflict and violence (what\u2019s known as \u201cnegative peace\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Instead, we need a local, national and international effort towards \u201c<strong>positive peace<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 a holistic sustainable effort to <strong>prevent <\/strong>(rather than respond to) <strong>conflict<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">For positive peace, we need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Well-functioning governments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equitable distribution of resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free flow of information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good relations with neighbours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High levels of human capital<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acceptance of the rights of others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low levels of corruption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sound business environments<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">Source: IEP, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsandpeace.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Pillars-of-Peace-Report-IEP2.pdf\"><strong>Pillars of Peace Report<\/strong><\/a> <\/em>(2015)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">To do this, we must <strong>build egalitarian resilient communities<\/strong> and <strong>transparent, accountable nations <\/strong>to collaborate on a global scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In short, if we want peace, we need to <strong>help communities thrive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We have to tackle the rise of global terrorism, address the rise in climate change, promote intercommunal dialogue, address poverty and inequality \u2013 including gender inequality \u2013 and work on all levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This includes engaging at grassroots (community) level, with civil societies (expert organisations) and governmental and intragovernmental powers, to <strong>drive critical change<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Of course, this requires holistic change globally. And change starts with us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Whatever our background, we can all make a difference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">How? href=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.com\/2023\/03\/30\/building-dialogue-4-ways-to-engage-in-interfaith-dialogue-in-your-local-community\/comment-page-1\/\"><strong>Inter-communal dialogue<\/strong><\/a> based on common shared values (our shared humanity!) is critical in building stronger relationships in our communities, regions, nations and globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Working across religious and cultural divides by communicating with each other and carving shared spaces, <strong>we<\/strong> <strong>build a common sense of citizenship<\/strong> to come together and prevent conflict when disagreements and tensions rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">By understanding individuals and communities\u2019 diverse needs, we can better understand different lived experiences and carve more equitable spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Promoting diversity and inclusion, and ensuring a broader sense of identity and citizenship, we can fight exclusion and develop the tools and understanding to prevent and respond to disagreements and larger-scale conflict:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">\u201cFor decades the fields of conflict resolution, mediation and peace studies had been overlooking the\u00a0<strong>positive political role that religion could play in all stages of peacebuilding<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Today there is growing attention to the contribution that religious peacebuilding can make to the stability, security, and justice of many divided societies around the world\u2026 through political application of religious ideals like reconciliation, forgiveness and mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispionline.it\/en\/publication\/religion-and-peacebuilding-in-an-age-of-uncertainty-135741\"><strong>Italian Institute for International Political Studies<\/strong><\/a> (2023)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We therefore need to <strong>amplify the role of intercommunal dialogue <\/strong>\u2013 including interfaith and intercultural dialogue \u2013 to <strong>unite among shared values<\/strong>, against (perceived) notions of <strong>difference<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">These values however must lie within a framework of <strong>human rights <\/strong>(shared dignity and humanity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In this way, we can <strong>build a mutual foundation of common values <\/strong>and unite to promote diversity (amongst all faiths and none). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We can therefore critically understand and promote the mutual rights of each and every one of us when building initiatives, policies and projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We can also confidently in collaboration <strong>reject harm<\/strong>, respecting and promoting cultural and religious diversity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In this way, we can confidentially <strong>counteract religious extremism<\/strong> and <strong>harmful socio-cultural norms<\/strong> together, ensuring that we do not excuse harm under extreme variations of <strong>cultural relativism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size class=\"has-text-align-justify\">\u201cCorruption harms the poor and vulnerable the most, increasing costs and reducing access to basic services, such as health, education, social programs, and even justice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">It <strong>exacerbates inequality<\/strong> and reduces private sector investment to the detriment of markets, job opportunities, and economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Corruption can also <strong>undermine a country\u2019s response to emergencies<\/strong>, leading to unnecessary suffering and, at worst, death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Over time, corruption can undermine the trust and confidence that citizens have for their leaders and institutions, <strong>creating social friction<\/strong> and in some contexts <strong>increasing the risk of fragility, conflict, and violence<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/opinion\/2023\/06\/13\/corruption-is-a-global-problem-for-development-to-fight-it-we-all-have-a-role-to-play\">Ousmane Diagana and Mouhamadou Diagne<\/a>, World Bank (2023)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">So, to tackle the issue of global poverty, inequity of systems and to drive real change, we need <strong>accountancy, transparency, development and growth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This requires action across society, on all levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We need to <strong>call businesses to account <\/strong>for how they treat their employees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We need to ensure that <strong>governments are investing money<\/strong> where they should be, that <strong>justice systems are fit for purpose<\/strong> and that <strong>grassroots communities <\/strong>are able to protect the most vulnerable people in our societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This includes people at increasing risk of modern slavery and displacement (see point #3) and gender-based violence (see points #3 and #4) as poverty and inequality meet the increasing drivers of climate change (see point #3) \u2013 amongst various other phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">It&#8217;s a task of monumental scale, but we can\u2019t just sit back and do nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Here\u2019s how we can start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-12c3834b929398ea75a24d70fbba129c\"><strong>Take action:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2924c17af84855e75405bae3cf1f79b0\"><strong>Call for accountability: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Report corruption wherever you see it. Call for investigations amid the misuse of power and the abuse of systems \u2013 be it locally, nationally or internationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Call people and systems to account. Report, fight and expose<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e1d507482879925864b7cb92a150ec77\"><strong>Model the change: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Be the change in your own networks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Whatever your work, position or line of work, ensure your systems are fair, transparent and open to feedback (as well as legally compliant!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1be11eb46943e362c71cf2d77e1389f1\"><strong>Support workers\u2019 rights: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antislavery.org\/what-we-do\/responsible-business\/\"><strong>responsible business<\/strong><\/a> and workers rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.antislavery.org\/slavery-today\/spot-the-signs-of-slavery\/\"><strong>Spot the signs<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernslavery.gov.uk\/start\"><strong>report modern slavery<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enduyghurforcedlabour.org\/\"><strong>Call businesses to account<\/strong><\/a>, join and support vital<strong> trade unions<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antislavery.org\/take-action\/campaigns\/business-human-rights-and-environment\/#petition\"><strong>lobby governments<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>to promote equality and transparency<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-80306992b5218a996955da7004b39c31\"><strong>Get politically engaged: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Use your voice! Vote, stand for power, challenge leaders and volunteer at polling stations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Key drivers of conflict are poverty and inequality which thrive in corrupt environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Change \u2013 and the scale of the problem \u2013 is of course contextual (as is the level of risk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We can all start with ourselves, modelling the change we can see. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Locally, regionally, nationally, internationally, there is a lot of work to be done! But please, keep safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a1fe57bcc5306a48c37a36d702a47226\"><strong>3. class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The impact of increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/causes-effects-climate-change\"><strong>climate change<\/strong><\/a> is devastating to both people and planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As the planet\u2019s temperature is rising, so too is the frequency of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/uk\/news\/stories\/climate-change-and-displacement-myths-and-facts\"><strong>climate induced disasters such as floods and droughts<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">And this is having a monumental impact on communities worldwide \u2013 in particular the world\u2019s most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In 2022 alone, a staggering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/uk\/news\/stories\/climate-change-and-displacement-myths-and-facts\"><strong>32.6 million people<\/strong><\/a> were displaced as a result of disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">98% of these were weather-related, such as floods, storms, wildfires and droughts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">And these are increasing the impact of poverty and risk of conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As crops fail, livestock perish and people lose their livelihoods and homes, families and communities are left displaced \u2013 in search of food, shelter and work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Such disasters\/climatic changes aren\u2019t a one off, they act as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/uk\/news\/stories\/climate-change-and-displacement-myths-and-facts\"><strong>threat multiplier<\/strong><\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">\u201cNot only did climate-related disasters trigger more than half of new reported displacements in 2022, but nearly 60 per cent of refugees and internally displaced people now live in countries that are among the most vulnerable to climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/uk\/news\/stories\/climate-change-and-displacement-myths-and-facts\"><strong>UNHCR<\/strong><\/a> (2023)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Communities already affected by poverty are facing greater vulnerability to abuse and harm such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.antislavery.org\/what-we-do\/climate-change\/\"><strong>Modern slavery and human trafficking<\/strong><\/a>: forced labour, child\/forced marriage and bonded labour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/blog\/why-climate-change-fuels-violence-against-women?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAmZGrBhAnEiwAo9qHiQHwXhLHI5nWZOUPiAOORAK7Cb9JhlEx26YFx7XgXBy9fSMdL2MTShoC7_4QAvD_BwE\"><strong>Gender-based violence<\/strong><\/a>: child and forced marriage, sexual violence and exploitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/climate-change-and-health\"><strong>Ill health<\/strong> <strong>and death<\/strong><\/a>: malnutrition and contracting water-borne, food-borne and vector-borne diseases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">With tensions around dwindling resources rising, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/uk\/news\/stories\/climate-change-and-displacement-myths-and-facts\"><strong>conflict and displacement<\/strong><\/a> are increasingly occurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">That\u2019s why we need to <strong>tackle climate change<\/strong> to not only protect the planet, but to also promote peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-d742cd6179f5b9b8aa62d7fd7f715fc6\"><strong>Take action:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7d503b933eb4510d956ea9fd8a11c84d\"><strong>Make personal changes: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Cut your impact on the planet by changing in your consumption habits, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use less plastic:<span style=\"font-size: revert\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">S<span style=\"font-size: revert\">witch to using a reusable (metal) water bottle, plastic-free food containers and toiletries. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><span style=\"font-size: revert\">Re-use any plastic containers you do have for food or toiletries, rather than throwing them away<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pollute less:<span style=\"font-size: revert\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">S<span style=\"font-size: revert\">wap your car for public transport, walk more (and get a work out) and limit your air miles where possible by choosing trains and ferries<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Consume less:<span style=\"font-size: revert\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><span style=\"font-size: in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ippf.org\/blogs\/why-are-women-and-girls-worst-affected-humanitarian-crises\"><strong>times of conflict<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Teen girls are 90% more likely to be out of education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>70% of women will experience gender-based violence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This however, simple falls in line with overall trends on gender inequality across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">How? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/voiceofsalam.com\/2017\/07\/28\/10-trends-gender-inequality-worldwide\/\"><strong>women and girls worldwide<\/strong><\/a> are already more likely than their male counterparts to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Live in poverty and earn less<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be illiterate \/ out of education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience sexual violence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excluded from decision making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be married as a child<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We also know that when women are involved in peacekeeping efforts, peace is more likely to be sustainable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">\u201c<strong>Female participation<\/strong> in both <strong>conflict prevention<\/strong> and <strong>conflict resolution<\/strong> <strong>enhances security<\/strong> interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Studies have found that a significant inclusion of women and civil society groups in a peace negotiation makes the resulting agreement <strong>64% less likely to fail<\/strong> and <strong>35% more likely to last<\/strong> at least fifteen years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">\u2026full and meaningful participation of women in peace operations broadens the perspective on conflict management, allows for more inclusive political resolutions, and, in the end, improves international peacebuilding strategies\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Eric Rudberg, <a href=\"https:\/\/wiisglobal.org\/the-importance-of-meaningful-participation-of-female-peacekeepers\/\"><strong><em>Women in International Security<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2023)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">So, when it comes to <strong>positive peace <\/strong>(<strong>preventing conflict)<\/strong> \u2013 we need to dismantle the political, social, cultural, religious and economic barriers that discriminate women and harm society as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">These are barriers that both <strong>limit women&#8217;s participation in conflict prevention\/resolution<\/strong> and also result in a <strong>disproportionate impact on<\/strong> conflict on women and girls in crisis situations (pre-, mid and post-conflict).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-d742cd6179f5b9b8aa62d7fd7f715fc6\"><strong>Take action:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d60999de4bf7189721bbdba81fc2bb5c\"><strong>Support education for women and girls: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/educating-girls-is-the-key-to-ending-poverty\/\"><strong>Education<\/strong><\/a> is crucial for fighting the duality of poverty and gender inequality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Women with an education are less likely to fight poverty (see point #5), and have greater means to leave abusive relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When girls go to school, they\u2019re building their future and fighting illiteracy, poverty and harmful practice such as child marriage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Differently abled girls, menstruating girls and girls in rural communities all need access to quality education \u2013 which requires not just a change class=\"wp-element-caption\">Poverty is often a major factor behind the eruption of conflict.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As we\u2019ve already seen, if we want to <strong>build peace and prevent conflict<\/strong>, we need to fight corruption, to work to ensure the mutual respect of human rights and to fight gender inequality and the increasing impact of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">And so, a huge factor is also: <strong>fighting poverty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Why? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Because <strong>poverty is a major driving factor<\/strong> behind the prevalence of harmful gender-based norms (see point #4), ill health and the <strong>exclusion of people <\/strong>in decision making and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Individuals and communities living in poverty are also further disproportionally affected by the increasing effects of <strong>climate change <\/strong>and <strong>risk of displacement <\/strong>(see point #3). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Taking also these factors into account, we&#8217;re left seeing the increased risk of conflict . <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">And of course, the further <strong>exclusion of women <\/strong>(see point #4) (remembering that women are also in fact key to building <strong>inclusive sustainably peaceful environments<\/strong> in pre and post-conflict rebuilding processes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poverty is complex, yet key part of the solution:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">\u201c\u2026extreme poverty is \u2026 increasing in countries affected by fragility, conflict and violence (FCV)&#8230;by 2030, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/fragilityconflictviolence\/brief\/orldbank.org\/en\/topic\/poverty\/publication\/fragility-conflict-on-the-front-lines-fight-against-poverty\">\u202fup to two thirds of the world\u2019s extreme poor<\/a>\u202fwill live in these situations.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">These challenges threaten to reverse efforts to end extreme poverty, and they affect both low- and middle-income countries\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Violent conflict has spiked dramatically since 2010 &#8212; conflicts now drive 80% of all humanitarian needs and reduce gross domestic product (GDP) growth by two percentage points per year&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Social and economic exclusion, climate change, gender and other inequalities, demographic challenges, illicit financial flows and other global trends contribute to this complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>World Bank, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/fragilityconflictviolence\/brief\/people-peace-prosperity\"><em>People, Peace, Prosperity<\/em><\/a> (2020)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">It\u2019s fundamentally clear that if we want to prevent conflict, we need to fight poverty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">And if we want to fight poverty, we need to fight conflict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Communities need equitable, inclusive, safe and thriving societies to build and promote dialogue, stem the effects of climate change, fight corruption and ultimately <strong>prevent conflict<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-d742cd6179f5b9b8aa62d7fd7f715fc6\"><strong>Take action:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e41367df1868a8ec6e7470b44dcfca36\"><strong>Challenge discrimination: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Speak out against the discrimination which traps people in poverty, makes them vulnerable to radicalisation and\/or recruitment in armed groups, and builds tension in communities (see sections #1 and #2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-473f1966ee9dee87641fc5a686a29091\"><strong>Keep refugee children in education: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Nearly half of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrefugees.org\/news\/five-key-facts-about-refugee-children-s-education\/\"><strong>school-aged refugee children<\/strong><\/a> are not in school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Donate towards, volunteer with or share information at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/documents\/including-refugee-learners-so-every-child-learns-uganda-1\"><strong>projects supporting refugee children&#8217;s education<\/strong><\/a> to help these children get the critical education every child needs and  help break the cycle of poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-39416d1b61fe1bb7baca3cfb59ded345\"><strong>Prevent the recruitment of child soldiers: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Poverty and lack of opportunities are major drivers behind the recruitment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldvision.org.uk\/our-work\/child-soldiers\/\"><strong>child soldiers<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Help end this abuse by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldvision.org.uk\/our-work\/child-soldiers\/\"><strong>supporting dedicated work<\/strong><\/a> to prevent the recruitment <strong>of child soldiers <\/strong>by strengthening<strong> <\/strong>child protection systems, promoting peacebuilding and increasing access to\u00a0education\u00a0and work opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-23b99038bb41f59266acf14af22c6759\"><strong>Fight food poverty: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In times of crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/dangerously-hungry-link-between-food-insecurity-and-conflict#:~:text=Food%20insecurity%20can%20raise%20the,category%20of%20motivation%20is%20grievance.\"><strong>food insecurity increases the risk of violence<\/strong><\/a> towards those who produce food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When communities don\u2019t have adequate access to food, they face ill health and will struggle with accessing work and education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Fighting food poverty is therefore one step to creating more participatory societies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Donate to food projects, set up your own and <a href=\"https:\/\/renecassin.org\/category\/right-to-food\/\"><strong>speak to political leaders about food poverty in your locality<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We also need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Tackle the attitudes behind <strong>gender-based discrimination and violence<\/strong> (see section #4)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote and support<strong> education<\/strong> (for children and adults) and <strong>livelihoods\/business<\/strong> (see section #4)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect <strong>workers rights<\/strong> (see section #2)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fund <strong>climate-resilience <\/strong>projects (see section #3)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In this way, we can tackle the cycle and <strong>roots causes of poverty and inequality <\/strong>which make individuals and communities vulnerable to conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><strong>Peacebuilding<\/strong> is an ongoing process. A process that we need to be <strong>active <\/strong>in building and sustaining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As a planet, we need to look beyond <strong>non-violence, <\/strong>towards wider building<strong> positive peace <\/strong>globally.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This means going beyond the idea of simply a  &#8220;<strong>lack of violence<\/strong>&#8221;
