However, while many national parks have conceded to pressure three still allow the practice &#8211; which is, at best, a smokescreen for actual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/topics\/fox-hunting\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">fox hunting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Time for change with trail hunting<\/h2>\n<p>National wildlife charity the League Against Cruel Sports, plus partner members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.league.org.uk\/nationalparks\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Time for Change<\/a> Coalition Against Hunting, were in London at the headquarters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalparks.uk\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">National Parks<\/a> England to personally hand the letter over:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"3sYhJje69\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are handing in all the letters from you, our wonderful supporters today into National Park England asking them to do all in their power to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/EndHunting?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#EndHunting<\/a> on National Park land. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fg4ZnwRHwR\">pic.twitter.com\/fg4ZnwRHwR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; League Against Cruel Sports (@LeagueACS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeagueACS\/status\/1729519296861151286?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 28, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A similar letter has been given to the National Parks of Wales organisation.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the last hunting season the League published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.league.org.uk\/hunt-havoc\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> outlining the havoc hunts cause for rural communities: the livestock worrying, the trespass onto railways, the marauding of dozens of hounds across busy roads, the domestic animals killed or injured as a result of the hunt. All these activities would not happen if the hounds were truly following pre-laid trails, which is what they claim.<\/p>\n<p>So, the letter urges all National Parks Authorities to end so-called \u2018trail\u2019 hunting on their land, in which hunters with packs of hounds often chase and kill wildlife &#8211; a practice that should have been outlawed with the introduction of the Hunting Act 2004.<\/p>\n<p>It was signed by around 13,000 people in just five months and, as a result, 10 out of 13 National Parks Authorities in England and Wales have committed to ending trail hunting.<\/p>\n<h2>Three rogue National Parks<\/h2>\n<p>However, three \u2013 Exmoor, Dartmoor, and the Peak District\u2013 still consider trail hunting a legitimate practice. Not only that, but even within the boundaries of the national parks landowners are able to give hunts permission to chase and kill wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>The League Against Cruel Sports is asking people to email Exmoor, Dartmoor, and Peak District park authorities to urge them to ban trail hunting. You can do that <a href=\"https:\/\/takeaction.league.org.uk\/page\/139350\/action\/1?mode=DEMO#\"  rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Norris, Chairman of the League Against Cruel Sports, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are grateful to those national Parks Authorities who have committed to protecting the land and wildlife in their care and who say trail hunting, which is so often a smokescreen for old fashioned illegal hunting, has no place in these precious rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>But there is more to be done. Our message to Exmoor, Dartmoor, the Peak District and to all the landowners who allow trail hunting on their land within the national parks of England and Wales, is clear: it\u2019s time for change. Time to recognise that hunting hurts the countryside, it hurts the wildlife, and it hurts rural life. It\u2019s time to stop hunting for good and to end trail hunting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In summer 2023 Chief Superintendent Matt Longman \u2013 National Police Chiefs\u2019 Council Lead on Fox Hunting Crime \u2013 attended the launch of the Time for Change Coalition Against Hunting as its keynote speaker. There, he described trail hunting as &#8220;a smokescreen for continuing illegal hunting&#8221; and suggested the Hunting Act was not fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<h2>A ban filled with loopholes<\/h2>\n<p>One of the coalition members, Dominic Dyer from Born Free, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is part of the National Parks\u2019 vision to see wildlife flourishing, and this can hardly be the case if that same wildlife is hunted. That\u2019s why today we\u2019re asking that hunts are not allowed within the boundaries of all national parks in England and Wales.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, as the <em>Canary<\/em> previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/trending\/2023\/02\/10\/police-bodys-fox-hunting-crime-lead-admits-illegal-killing-is-prolific-in-uk\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> there is still a long way to go:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protectthewild.org.uk\/fox-hunting\/the-legal-status-of-hunting-across-the-uk\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">hunting ban full of loopholes and exemptions<\/a>\u00a0that are ripe for abuse, true justice won\u2019t be served until national authorities strengthen the ban.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/uk\/analysis\/2023\/01\/25\/scotland-just-became-the-first-uk-nation-to-effectively-end-fox-hunting\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Scotland<\/a>\u00a0has recently passed a new law that goes a long way towards fixing the flaws in the current legislation.
