Minnie was still chained, lying inside her doghouse. Officials charged Cherelle Turner Askew with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnct.com\/on-your-side\/crime-tracker\/bertie-co-woman-facing-animal-cruelty-charges-after-peta-complaint\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">seven counts of cruelty<\/a> and seized five dogs from the yard. PETA filed an innovative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/unique-state-law-helps-peta-win-freedom-for-chained-neglected-dogs-photos\/\">civil lawsuit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnct.com\/news\/animals\/dogs-in-bertie-co-cruelty-case-given-custody-to-peta\/\">gained permanent custody<\/a> of the surviving dogs.
