It is shared here with permission under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0) license.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Amid a nearly 16-month strike by&nbsp;<em>Pittsburgh Post-Gazette&nbsp;<\/em>employees, the union representing workers at Pennsylvania&#8217;s top newspaper by circulation on Monday filed an official grievance condemning the use of artificial intelligence to create an illustration published in the previous day&#8217;s edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The\u00a0<em>Post-Gazette<\/em>&#8216;s attempt to replace our labor with artificial intelligence is a serious concern to journalists not just in Pittsburgh, but all across the country,&#8221; Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh president Zack Tanner said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pghguild.com\/2024\/01\/23\/ai-will-not-replace\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday. &#8220;As newsroom jobs continue to disappear due to corporate greed and mismanagement, we stand firmly against any use of AI that takes work out of union members&#8217; hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We condemn the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PittsburghPG?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@pittsburghpg<\/a> for using artificial intelligence to create an illustration that ran in Sunday\u2019s paper. It\u2019s a dangerous precedent and another slap in the face as the company\u2019s latest attempt to slash workers\u2019 rights: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KjYcCsP7Q8\">https:\/\/t.co\/KjYcCsP7Q8<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hhRtinDsCt\">pic.twitter.com\/hhRtinDsCt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh \ud83d\uddde (@PGHGuild) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PGHGuild\/status\/1749844296797180134?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Post-Gazette<\/em>&nbsp;production, distribution, and advertising workers have been on strike since October 2022, primarily over the loss of their healthcare plan. According to union officials, Block Communications, the paper&#8217;s owner, refused to pay an additional $19 per week for each employee to keep workers&#8217; existing coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paper&#8217;s workers have been without a contract since March 2017, when the previous collective bargaining agreement expired without a replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newspaper Guild workers are demanding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>An end to the impasse in contract negotiations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undoing the unilaterally imposed working conditions and reinstatement of terms of the expired 2014-17 newsroom contract;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A return to the bargaining table to reach a fair deal with the journalists represented by the Newspaper Guild; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meeting the healthcare demands of striking sister unions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Block Communications has hired more than two dozen strike-breaking workers to ensure continued&nbsp;<em>Post-Gazette<\/em>&nbsp;publication during the prolonged union action. However, this is apparently the first time management has passed over human workers in favor of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;AI will not scab us,&#8221; the Newspaper Guild defiantly declared, using the colloquial labor term usually reserved for human beings who cross picket lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Common Dreams<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/fake-content-ai-threat-journalism\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0last year how the AI and fake content industries pose an increasing threat to journalists&#8217; livelihoods around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As the [<em>Post-Gazette<\/em>] resists working with us to put an end to this strike, they continue to sink to new lows in an effort to crank out whatever product they can cobble together,&#8221; Jen Kundrach, a striking illustrator at the paper, said Tuesday. &#8220;That they&#8217;ve resorted to the use of inferior, AI-generated images rather than custom art by a staff illustrator shows how little they must value the talent of their guild staff. They&#8217;d rather squander that talent and put out a subpar newspaper than come to the table and reach a fair agreement with us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Post-Gazette<\/em>&nbsp;workers are buoyed by a January 2023 National Labor Relations Board&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlrb.gov\/case\/06-CA-269346\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruling<\/a>&nbsp;that found management did not negotiate in good faith, imposed illegal working conditions, and unlawfully surveilled unionizing workers. Block Communications legal representatives appealed the decision.
