The statement doesn&#8217;t hold back and advises that the final stage of the UK government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/prime-minister-sets-out-roadmap-to-cautiously-ease-lockdown-restrictions\"  rel=\"noopener\">roadmap to ease<\/a> coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions should not proceed.<\/p>\n<p>A pivotal moment for the Johnson government looms.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Emergency statement<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>On 4 June, Indie SAGE (Independent Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) announced that its weekly live briefing included an emergency statement:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"FHE8DR56eBKuObYtMNfjZVoan4VIXkEdzzWUCPwjgTv5UlFWH2gqJrRrlI71sP03u7yKLQhQ\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LIVE NOW: Independent SAGE&#39;s weekly briefing including emergency statement introduced by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DeenanDpillay?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@deenandpillay<\/a>. Also latest data analysis from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrischirp?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@chrischirp<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Jvv1FrWXEM\">https:\/\/t.co\/Jvv1FrWXEM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Independent SAGE (@IndependentSage) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IndependentSage\/status\/1400792197289500689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 4, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Indie SAGE emergency statement was <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4-umOUARzLY\"  rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> by University College London virologist professor Deenan Pillay. It said that Indie SAGE &#8220;strongly advises&#8221; the UK government not to progress with its final stage of the pandemic roadmap, commencing 21 June.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xX1DPq\"><iframe title=\"indie_SAGE 04.06.21\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4-umOUARzLY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With regard to the Delta (Indian) variant, Indie SAGE warned that it&#8217;s spreading widely across England. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independentsage.org\/indie-sage-statement-on-the-uk-government-roadmap-for-ending-all-restrictions\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are currently witnessing a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in England. Public Health England figures released on 3<sup>rd<\/sup> June suggest that the Delta variant has spread widely across the UK and is continuing to spread, that it has higher infectivity than the previous circulating variant, and that it is more likely to cause disease and hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p>There is increasing evidence that vaccine efficacy is compromised against this variant, and that individuals remain at particular risk until they receive two doses. There is some evidence that protection from two doses wanes after a number of months, particularly in the elderly. Meanwhile, cases are surging in school aged children, and spreading into the community, particularly amongst those yet to be fully vaccinated. It is clear that the link between infection and hospitalization has not yet been fully broken.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indie SAGE also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independentsage.org\/indie-sage-statement-on-the-uk-government-roadmap-for-ending-all-restrictions\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">warns that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As things stand, it is very difficult to justify progressing with the last stage of the roadmap.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead it makes a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independentsage.org\/indie-sage-statement-on-the-uk-government-roadmap-for-ending-all-restrictions\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">recommendations<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Strengthening financial and practical support to those requiring isolation following symptoms or a positive test, or for those in contact with positive testing individuals;<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring adequate ventilation and infection control measures within indoor venues (e.g. schools, workplaces, hospitality), with rigorous monitoring, certification of venues, and \u00a0sanctions where these measures are not undertaken;<\/li>\n<li>Reinstating face coverings for secondary school children, and providing resources to enhance classroom ventilation<\/li>\n<li>Doing away with the red\/amber\/green travel stratification and implementing comprehensive border control with managed quarantine, in order to avoid the importation of novel variants and the exportation of UK infections;<\/li>\n<li>Further accelerating vaccine rollout, and ensuring completion of two doses, to provide protection from infection. Boosters for vulnerable populations should be considered urgently by JCVI;<\/li>\n<li>Adequately resourcing the global vaccine initiative, to ensure control of transmission worldwide.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pillay also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jun\/03\/india-covid-variant-may-increase-risk-of-hospital-admission-early-data-suggests\"  rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the <em>Guardian<\/em> that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There should be no laxity of protective measures like social distancing and the rest of it. Infections are rising and it\u2019s essential people know the risks<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><strong>Delta variant and vaccine effectiveness<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Indie SAGE also issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independentsage.org\/quick-guide-to-variants-of-concern-in-the-uk\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">summary<\/a> table of the variants. It includes effectiveness figures for the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines in relation to the Delta variant:<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.independentsage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/VariantCheatSheet-1280x640.png\" alt=\"Quick guide to variants of concern in the UK\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Good and bad news<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The news is mixed.<\/p>\n<p>Public Health England (PHE) epidemiologist Meaghan Kall tweeted:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"qxSAH5zjVq0Tu9v6bbn91t78e2KfMPcKsFuL3cgIGMQZXBsXBdYejWOrCa74mRiJoo5hhvkL4Eay\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">One shining light however is that vaccination still appears to be making an impact on spread <\/p>\n<p>73% of Delta cases are in unvaccinated people<\/p>\n<p>Only 3.7% Delta cases are in people who\u2019ve had both doses <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zg6Yji76tr\">pic.twitter.com\/zg6Yji76tr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Meaghan Kall (@kallmemeg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kallmemeg\/status\/1400492226099167235?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Data also shows there have been more than twice as many outbreaks of the Delta variant in schools than in workplaces:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LHyMadBDZnRUPf14tSdpbVK7suCkXSRrZ9A3LynEFwWsUuE9VjNcg0O62h4N1hmYxI0JTHzFMlCcoTGOIvp357if\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Another new bit of data is hotly anticipated info on school outbreaks <\/p>\n<p>This shows there\u2019s been 140 school outbreaks and 62 workplace outbreaks of Delta variant <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s increased weekly, and Delta makes up for about half of known schools outbreaks in the most recent week <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HaQNH7Nhqb\">pic.twitter.com\/HaQNH7Nhqb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Meaghan Kall (@kallmemeg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kallmemeg\/status\/1400494354553348098?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Blood on his hands<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>As for the government&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/991135\/3_June_2021_Risk_assessment_for_SARS-CoV-2_variant_DELTA.pdf\"  rel=\"noopener\">risk assessment<\/a> on the Delta variant, a number of concerns are highlighted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Delta is predominant and all analyses find that it has a very substantial growth advantage. The observed high growth rate is most likely to be due to a combination of place based context, transmissibility and immune escape.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, the high growth in the variant is likely due to local conditions, rate of transmission, and levels of vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the Indie SAGE video, professor Alice Roberts <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4-umOUARzLY\"  rel=\"noopener\">warns<\/a> we may now have entered a third wave of the pandemic. Indeed, professor Martin McKee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/may\/30\/third-wave-of-covid-may-be-under-way-in-uk-scientists-say\"  rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the <em>Guardian<\/em> on 30 May:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Unless there is a miracle, opening up further in June is a huge risk. The rise in cases we are seeing now should cause a reassessment of the most recent relaxation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>UK prime minister Boris Johnson already has blood on his hands. So, to avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/coronavirus\/country\/uk\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">thousands more deaths<\/a> from the virus he must learn from his government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/373\/bmj.n1374\"  rel=\"noopener\">past mistakes<\/a>.
